He says he doesn’t know the origin. But the explains it perfectly. Thats called being modest. A rare quality.
He was certainly awesome. However...
...that's not what he said. He never said he didn't knew Joker's origin. What he said was "I'm not a great student of the Batman comics". As in "I'm no expert in Batman's comics". He must have known something about The Joker and done a minimum research bc he needed material to create the character so it's actually no surprise that he knew something about his origin.
Maybe ... but remember the Joker always lies about his origin.
@@bustermorley8318 There is an ancient Gnostic belief (Cathar, to be exact) that if you revealed that the devil is actually the ego (and it is) that it would come for you. You weren't supposed to reveal its origins. The Joker is an archetype for the devil/the ego. The Batman is the archetypal Self, he's the Christ.
@@orpheus.. so what if its not what he said, what did you gain from the correction.....if you expect everything you see on the internet to be perfect you have a hard road ahead of you....live n let live, you have no choice
Yeah, back then they didn’t have dorks getting bent out of shape over every little detail, they were just happy to see the comics come to life.
This dude was so cool that he was like ... “ I ain’t shaving my mustache.”
Is that what your girlfriend told you ?
I'm 60 years old and I haven't shaved my mustache since I was 22. If a job requires me to shave my mustache I'm quitting.
Nothing wrong with that. You always have the option to say "No". People often forget that.
Nope, not in any of his films...
It was in his contract that the mustache stays.
He did an awesome Joker, all the manerisms, the laugh, for a campy show It was perfect. RIP Cesar, from a big fan.
I was so scared of him when I was a kid... yikes !!!
Leon I agree! Cesar was the best!
He was the Joker blueprint for Mark Hamill (my belief). 😋
He was crazy funny and so full of joy . He still the best .
Grew up on reruns of Batman...hated all the recent movies...the silly Batman series was the best, and most of the guest villains were great...wish I could be seven years old, in front of the tv, on a snow day from school again...😁
When actors still had class, tremendous class.
nonsense...actors back then were doing many of the same things actors do today...use drugs, cheating on their spouse, marrying and remarrying, DUIs and other legal infractions, etc, etc. Look it up. If actors have less class today its because the larger society has less class. Ask Donald Trump if you don't believe it.
You can't expect actors to be any different than the society they come from and live in. If Romero was in Hollywood today, he'd be a product of today's society. That's how it works. Your inaccurate and sentimental romance about yesteryear is typical of someone getting old and someone ignorant of what actually happened in the past.
He used to help feed the homeless here in Los Angeles on Skid Row during the Christmas Holidays. I true gentleman and a caring human being
When actors still had class, tremendous class.
Yes my friend... we live in another time.
But yes, I miss those days... but what men kept their elegance and education!!!
I think we can put them in the package called "class".
Ty. ✌
Certainly applicable to Mr. Romero.
@@julioalcaraz5417 Nice story to hear... He was/is a legend.
I'm impressed that he actually knew The Joker's original origin.
Back then it was just an origin lol
@@SoBeLemos Yes originally that is true.
Quite interesting to hear his mentioning about The Joker's origin story even though he never knew at first of the Batman Comic Book references .
It's called research lol
I am too!
Romero’s Joker was legendary. He has a great understanding of the character.
Romero, and Jack the 2 best on screen jokers ever!!! Far as voice work, Mark Hamill is fantastic!!
@@CommodoreFan64 Considering how much Hamill gets into character when doing the voice, he would have made a great live action Joker too.
He seemed like a genuinely nice human being. I have heard that when he was recognized by kids on the street as being the actor who was Joker he would do that insane laugh for them.
Pretty much all the regular villains were nice people, that's why they were regular villains. The ones who were not so nice wound up being one-and-done, notably Otto Preminger and Shelley WInters.
@@oneeyedman99 - I heard Vincient Price was also really well liked by the cast & crew too hence why Egghead was on the show multiple times.
Jack Nicholson's portrayal of The Joker gave me an important realization. I realized what a great actor Cesar Romero truly was.
Cesar Romero a true gentleman.
the best joker hands down

Navy war vet too
Old school style better
Mr. Romero said that the one thing he was most proud of was being able to help his family because of the success of his career

I met an actor who worked with Cesar in his prime, and he described him as a prince of a man. It's so cool to know he was every bit a great person as he was an actor.
Cesar is a fantastic joker
The BEST Joker!
the best
The best by far !
Only Mark Hamil comes close.
He set the bar as the Joker
Something really great about the joker in his undershirt smoking a cigarette.
He was such a classy guy!
ua-cam.com/video/Mdm68hao_ZM/v-deo.html
He sure had a terrific voice
I don’t even smoke but I sure wish I could hold a cigarette as cool as he did.
Not to disparage any of the other "Joker" actors' iterations that came afterwards, but IMHO, Cesar Romero's "Joker" will always be the #1 Joker of them all .
Agreed! 👍
Of course he was the number one joker.. he was the first actor to ever play the joker
@@gokugoma3258 hehe Well I'm sure you know what I meant . But yeah, what you said is literally true hehehe..
@@NoLirix 👍🏽
Totally True
Met him near his final days.
He was struggling, but he was truly kind & pure class.
Adam West and I had the same routes on our errands in the 90s. He was just the character you see on tv, quirky and gentlemanly. Perhaps all of them were like that. A decade later, I worked on the vamp show Angel. The stars of that show were just wonderful as well despite the recent news. Maybe sci fi and fantasy shows employ the most quirky, nice people.
Cesar Romero was the best Joker. Hands down. He is also the closest to the comic book character. It is hilarious hearing him sit there and have a conversation with that makeup on. I love it!
one of our most popular videos!
@@texasarchive no joke?
Cesar Romero is the one and only Joker. He truly was awesome, simply perfect.
What I love the most is how he laughed as the Joker. 🃏
RIP César Julio Romero Jr.🙏🏼
When people say Heath Ledger was the best Joker I just shake my head.
Caesar Romero. was the best...no contest.
That laugh always got me laughing.
The man who started it all as THE JOKER Cesar Romero RIP.
Actually it was Conrad Veidt in the movie "The Laughing man" this is where the Joker idea came from. Cesar Romero did a great job as well.
@@daviddoyle8956 No, Conrad Veidt never played The Joker. He was the inspiration for Bill Finger and Bob Kane when creating the comic book character. Cesar Romero IS the *original* movie and TV Joker...
I know he didn't play the Joker. I know he was the inspiration for the character that was the point I was getting at.
@@daviddoyle8956 Thank you David awesome info! Veidt's evil grin is chilling! I've seen excerpts from The Laughing Man.
People had such class and sophistication that's just missing from today's society.
YES!!!!!!! This is the one thing I noticed too. Also people had a better grasp of diction and syntax. This had a way of elevating the atmosphere of every public venue. And it also had a way of making a more defined line between kid and adult. And it seemed to to be that way between all demographics which included both racial and economic!!!
@@ronaldtenayuca4418 Very true!
Agreed 100%
The interview seems more like a pleasant conversation between two people who are actually enjoying the chat. I agree 100% about the class and sophistication of yesteryear. I was just a boy in the 1960's, but it seemed like my parents' friends had so much more class than today's society.
So true, sauron249, so very true!
1/3 interview, 1/3 friends chatting, 1/3 a longtime fangirl still swooning... so cute 🥰
Accurate
That’s what I was thinking.
he seemed to be swooning a little himself.
her: we were well chaparoned. (so no one get any ideas that we were getting busy or anything)
He was the first one to interpret the comic book character Joker and bring him to film in the age where “Dark” And “ sociopathic” wasn’t allowed or part of TV.. He did a great job and laid ground work for others to follow.
Absolutely. You can tell that Jack Nicholson was a fan of Romero's work because he incorporated a lot of him in his portrayal while perfecting his own.
This is so great seeing Romero being himself while in Joker makeup-- and in a T-shirt.
He at least had a slight grip on the Joker’s backstory. That’s good.
What do you mean AT LEAST...What didn't you like....
He’s playing dumb to not bore her with details. It’s a common conversation technique for when you need to explain something without annoying people.
Love that he tried to be modest but still showed that he'd taken the time to research his character's origins. Sixty years on and you can still see his influence in some of the modern portrayals of Joker.
Cesar Romero, May YOUR Soul Rest in Peace Brother.
That man set the stage for all future actors who played the Joker. He made the Joker what he is today.
True
"I look back on those years with a lot of, sort of, nostalgia"
-- Cesar Romero
Umm so? The quote isn't that deep lol..
Maybe not. It may be true, or just being gallant to the kid sister of a friend. It sounds as though he and her family stayed in contact, though, since the time talked about.
The Grandfather Of The Joker Family
The only.
1:36: "Veryyyyyy gooood." Damn, she has a crush for Mr. J!
One of the greatest of all time. A brilliant Joker. RIP Cesar Romero.
They don't make them like they used to, old school is the best, Ceaser Romero best Joker of all and Jack Nicholson to.
I always had great memories of Cesar Romero as The Joker as a kid watching Batman.
RIP Cesar Romero (February 15, 1907 - January 1, 1994), aged 86
You will be remembered as a legend.
Cesar is the GOAT of Joker's! Legend!
Agreed # 1
I agree he was the best Joker
Sho Nuff he is the GOAT clever sinister also joyful .
He fully committed to the role of the Joker... So awesome to know that he enjoyed the role. Loved watching him give it his all, as a kid in the 60s. RIP Cesar Romero.
The best joker, and a very nice guy, rest in peace old boy.
A sophisticated gentleman, that has always scared the hell out of me as the only true Joker. That laugh sends shivers up my spine.
Where have all the great actors and celebrities gone!! this man, according to my uncle (another actor) was a class act who conducted himself in most appropriate manner. He was a man's man, and a great actor who also appeared in Spanish-speaking films.
Even with that makeup he's making that girl melt....
I did not realize that he only did three shows in one season. That shows you how great of a Joker he was because he was so memorable.
His infuriating laugh was his trademark as The Joker. 🙂
Cesar romero appeared 23 times as joker over 3 seasons
If he says three episodes then it was actually six because most episodes were two parters.
• “The Joker is Wild” / “Batman is Riled”
• “The Joker Goes to School” / “He Meets His Match, the Grisly Ghoul”
• “The Joker Trumps an Ace” / “Batman Sets the Pace”
He appeared 23 times as joker in 3 seasons and also the 66 movie BATMAN thats 24 times
@@ermano58 - You repeated yourself.
There’s something I love about Cesar Romero, in civilian clothes, sporting the Joker hair and make-up; it’s a cool look in my eyes.
Such a charming man!
I rarely heard Cesar Romero in real life. Seeing now how he voiced The Joker only makes him more legendary. Really gave life to the character.
This is quite a rare interview with Caesar Romero as the Joker in the”Batman”movie and television series. He really knew how to get into character and take time to be interviewed!Truly the last laugh of joy!!!…🎉
Caesar Romero truly had what it took to make the Joker a respectable character as a villain in both the” Batman” series and movie.Very much like Frank Gorshin(Riddler),Burgess Meredith(Penguin),and the other villains who had worked alongside both Adam West,Burt Ward(Batman and Robin) and the rest of the cast,he really knew how to get into character. And,he truly went above and beyond being typecast as the Latin Lover.”Let us away”forever!!!…Karl Schumaker 🤡
Despite the fact that Cesar Romero didn’t want to shave off his trademark mustache, but instead chose to have clown makeup blended into it, he did an excellent job portraying the Clown Prince of Crime. He was and always will be Hollywood’s original Joker.May his performance be on our minds and hearts forever!…Same Bat Time…Same Bat Channel!!!…Karl Schumaker 🤡
My favorite villian,by far,the crazy cackle,green hair,bad guy attire,the one and ONLY 🃏 joker!!Caesar Romero!!☝️

In my personal opinion he played the BEST Joker.
Hands down the best Joker
No argument there
THAT IS TRUE..!!..CESAR ROMERO FOREVER THE BEST JOKER..!!
The best joker grom that era.
He wasn't the best but he was better than Joaquin

Real old school gentleman behavior rarity in this day and age. Just the way he talks is unique. He looks like a very laid back pleasant guy. He reminds me a a lot of my Grand father on my moms side he was a "dapper" man as well.
I imagine the word was supposed to be "dapper"..just saying..😉

The chemistry here is amazing.
A friend of my husband's and I got a picture taken of her and him and it autographed it for my mother who was suffering from Parkinson's Disease! It was a were kind thing for him to do and it made her very happy!
That is one villain that always scared me, but it is great to see a little of the actor who played the original Joker.
This interview alone elevates his take on the Joker. 🫶
The reporter couldn't refrain to slip an arms around the man. She was melting! Fine gentleman and actor Cesar Romero was.
Trust me she knows he's gay. She's just doing a bit of self promoting.
It was definitely a different era back then. Nowadays coming onto someone while you are interviewing them would get you cancelled especially if you are a male reporter interviewing a female.
I love Jean's southern drawl.
Wow, at about 00:49, after Cesar describes why the Joker has green hair, and she says, "Ridiculous". You can plainly see that Cesar did not like her response!! Other than that, it was really refreshing to see one of the great portrayers of The Joker in such a relaxed moment.
Yes well it's a very rude and discourteous response to be honest. The lady should have more manners than that.
He did not like it. However the interviewer was clearly flustered and had a massive crush on him and she didn't mean to be disrespectful she was just not sure about what she was saying... I think she meant to say something like "Crazy!" or "wild"...
He still has the best jokers laugh to this day. I loved the batman series back when I was a kid. He was always my favorite villain on that series🃏
This man was an absolute gift and watching him playing the Joker was sheer delight. And i LOVE how much he enjoyed playing this character. This makes it even better. This gentleman was not just a professional, he was one of the greatest.
the late Adam West said that Mr. Romero was the consummate professional--in between takes he would sit in his chair just off the set and sleep--when he was called to film he would wake up go and do his lines perfectly and then go back a sleep in his chair again until he was called again
FUN FACT: The classic Joker laugh came at the insistence of the producers after they heard Romero's initial reaction after he saw his wardrobe for the first time for his character for the series.
My younger brother and I loved watching the Batman series in the 60s as children. All the characters were delightful. That series was my first exposure to Cesar Romero. He was a great Joker. I never knew he had an entire acting career before this show and was very proud when I learned that he was of Cuban descent and the grandson of one of Cuba's founding fathers as an independent nation. He was a gentleman and classy. I miss those times.
Ceasar Romero died in the 1990's and I always remember him for the role of the Joker in the 1960's
I absolutely love Cesar's views on the structure of Batman; his understanding of Joker's origin, how they win on Wednesday but loose on Thursday, it's a delight!
This man is a criminally underrated actor.
I don't think anyone who knows him underrates him.
Underrated? Lol..Ridiculous
I think he was most underrated when the 1989 Batman movie came out, and Jack Nicholson received all the raves. But those who pay attention appreciate how perfectly Cesar Romero portrayed the role.
Another “underrated” comment on UA-cam.🙄 It’s been close to a decade seeing these never ending comments. Make it stop!
Here’s a tip: It doesn’t make you look intelligent or sophisticated, it just makes you look desperate and ignorant.
Great classy interview. Intelligent and pleasant woman interviewer, intelligent well spoken interviewee. No stupid questions, I didn't sense any big egos. Nice.
This was no interview, it was all her fawning over him like a lonely housewife in heat and him just giving vague answers so he can go back to smoking...
