  • All Hebrew names are words with a meaning and when we examine the meanings of the names of Adam and his descendants in Genesis chapter 5, we find something very interesting. Let’s begin with the name Adam from Genesis 5:1.
    This Hebrew name, pronounced adam (121) is a Hebrew word that means “man.”
    The name Seth (8352), pronounced “sheyt” in Hebrew, is related to the root word shiyt (7896) and means “to set or put in place.” The name Seth means “established” or “appointed.”
    Next is the name Enosh (583), which is derived from the word enosh (582). This word also means “man,” but more literally a “mortal.”
    Then we have Keynan (7018). This name is derived from the word qeyn (7064) meaning a “nest.” Keynan means “dwelling.”
    Mahalala’eyl (4111) is a combination of two words. The word mahalal (4110) literally means “shine.” The word el (410) means “God.” So, Mahalale’eyl means “the shining of God” or “the light of God.”
    Jared (3382), pronounced yared in Hebrew, comes from the verb yarad (3381) and means “come down.”
    Then we have the name Enoch (2585), pronounced hhanokh in Hebrew. This name comes from the verb hhanakkh (2596) meaning “to dedicate.” The name Enoch means “dedicated.”
    The name Methuselah (4968), pronounced Metushelahh in Hebrew, is two words. The Hebrew word mot (4194) means “death.” Metu is a conjugation of this verb and means “his death.” The word shelahh (7973) is a verb meaning “send.” So Metushelahh means “his death brings.” Interestingly, the flood of Noah came in the year that Metushelahh died.
    Next is the name Lamehh (3929), but the meaning of this name is difficult as this word, or any other related word is not used in the Hebrew Bible, making a definition difficult. It is usually accepted to mean “to bring down low,” or “despair.”
    The last name in this genealogy is Noah (5146), pronounced no’ahh in Hebrew. The Hebrew verb nu’ahh (5118) means “to rest.” From this verb comes the noun no’ahh (5118) meaning “rest” and this noun is the name no’ahh, which then means “rest.”
    When we look at the meanings of each of these names… we get…
    Man appointed a mortal dwelling place, the light of God will come down dedicated, his death will bring the despairing rest.

    The story continues all the way through Yeshua with the Genealogy in Matthew 1.

    Who knows or can interpret what these means;
    Man appointed mortal dwelling, light of God came down dedicated. His death will bring despairing rest.
    I'm not sure what this means; What I think it means (though I could be wrong, which is way I ask if anyone can tell me what they think it means)
    Part 1
    ~Man appointed (Appointed can mean = Scheduled, arranged, and choose?)
    ~mortal dwelling (?)(I'm not sure with this one, but maybe perishable living, or perishable life?)
    Therefore: Man chose(Man appointed) perishable life over God, (←I say this because Adam and eve choose mortal life over the immortal God in the Garden of Eden) (Mortal dwelling).
    Part 2
    ~Light of God (Jesus)
    ~came down dedicated (to live the will of God)
    ~And his death will bring rest to despair, (rest can mean = death, to kill despair, possibly)
    the opposite of despair would be Hope, hope is synonymous with faith, faith = hope with assurance, thus if his death brought death to despair, it than brought faith, or hope to life.
    Therefore; Jesus (Light of God) came down to live the will of God (dedicated), and his death brought assurance and hope (and his death bring despairing rest)
    All Together
    Man chose perishable life over God,
    But Yeshua came to the world doing that which God commanded him to do, through his death he brought hope and assurance and by his death, death to despair.
    I'm not entirely sure as I said, I could be dead wrong, but if you think you know what it could be trying to say, please replay and share your thoughts to this comment, I would like to know what it means. and if you agree like this comment.

    Hey Jeff, thanks for all your work! I was interested because I saw a similar one to this given by Chuck Missler (famous preacher), I then checked online with my basic Hebrew understanding but people said it was false. However, you have shown otherwise evidentially, so thank you!

    Noah, being the 10th from Adam is also associated to Jonah/dove on the Biblewheel pattern.
    Jonah is the 10th book of the 2nd cycle, 32nd book overall (explained below).
    The Biblewheel divides the 66 books of the Bible, the Protestant cannon of Scriptures. It is divided into 3 sets or cycles of books:
    Books 1-22:
    Genesis - Song of Solomon;
    Books 23-44:
    Isaiah - Acts;
    And the 22 Epistles:
    Romans - Revelation.
    And each book numbered is associated or linked with the book of the next cycle:
    Genesis is well read with Isaiah and Romans;
    Exodus is well read with Jeremiah and 1Corinthians;
    Leviticus is well read with Lamentations and 2Corinthians;...
    So each set of three books are usually called Spokes as the spoke of a wheel.
    And “wheel” in Hebrew is Gilgal which numerical value adds up to 66 (3+30+3+30). So the Bible is identified as God’s wheel:
    Proverbs 20:26 (KJV) A wise king scattereth the wicked, and bringeth the wheel (Auphan) over them.
    The wheel is known as both auphan in Hebrew and Gilgal:
    Joshua 5:9 (KJV)
    And the LORD said unto Joshua, This day have I rolled away the reproach of Egypt from off you. Wherefore the name of the place is called Gilgal unto this day.
    Joshua 5:10 (KJV)
    And the children of Israel encamped in Gilgal, and kept the passover on the fourteenth day of the month at even in the plains of Jericho.
    And Ezekiel wheels are known as Auphan and Gilgal as well, which have eyes, and are accompanied by the 4. Living creatures which also represent the 4 Gospels. So the Biblewheel is the word of God.

    An alternate (more accurate) translation
    Adam=Human
    Seth=heir, replacement¹
    Enosh=person
    Cainan=dwelling
    Mahalaleel=in praise of God
    Jared=[angels] descend²
    Enoch=teacher³
    Methuselah=his death bringing
    Lamech=mighty youth/young one⁴
    Noah=to grief/an act of grief⁴
    1-Eve believed Seth was a replacement for Abel
    2-It's explained that
    Jared was named that way because the angels descended in his time
    3-Enoch could also mean "teacher"
    4-based on arabic cognates

    Você sente tédio de ler as genealogias da Bíblia?
    Essa aqui talvez você goste.
    Adão אדם, Sete שת, Enos אנוש, Cainã קינן, Maalalel מהללאל, Jarede ירד, Enoque חנוך, Metusalém מתושלח, Lameque למך, Noé נוח
    Mas o intrigante é o significado dos nomes:
    *Homem mortal designado para habitar a luz de Deus desceu dedicado sua morte trará descanso desesperador.*
    Como seria sua interpretação?

    I absolutely love the wonderful work that you have done helping to bring clarification to people of faith on what was truly written and to help bring us closer to our creator through the word! If you could, would you please do a video touching on the fact that 'God' isn't YHWH's name! I've had to revealed to me that God actually comes from the name Gade'el from the original name for the fallen angel Satan, that Lord is actually English for ba'al, and Jesus is Greek for hail Zeus! Please enlighten us on the proper names that should be used and what names should be avoided!

    Very long years of life in Gen 5. Metaphor ? Maybe not.
    They lived several hundred years ... some 900, others 700 or 800. Enoch was taken earlier ...
    I think that before the Flood was a different composition of the atmosphere. And that was probably a good conditions for life and health. The cataclysm of the Deluge is perhaps not only the lands under water, but also ... millions of tons of volcanic gases in the atmosphere, etc.
    There are many "documentary" programs on this topic, but most of them say that those cataclysms could be only millions or hundreds of thousands years ago.
    I do not know if it is right. View Wikipedia, read about errors in dating rocks age. Imagine another scenario of events.
    The outbreak of the Krakatau volcano ( the end of the 19th century ) made on the Earth darker and cooler for 2 years It was almost yesterday...
    In any case, biblical description says that on the Earth after the flood was systematic shortening of life. Size of life too ?
    IIs that just a matter of oxygen, atmospheric composition etc...?
    I do not know. I was not there then.

      Also there could be another possible reason for the drop in people's ages.
      I made a list of the recorded ages of men from Adam to Abraham and I noticed the age drops occurred at significant periods. Namely after the flood, after Babel, and then after Isaac and Jacob's time. At these times the gene pool was being reduced each time.
      Noah who lived till 950, possibly married a close relative due to the number of faithful people declining. This narrowed the gene pool leading to Shem having a reduced age of 601. His son Arphaxad has a further reduction to 439, again because Noah's sons would have had less choice of marriage partners if they wanted a godly wife, so narrowing the gene pool again.
      There is then another age drop with Peleg, living till 240. He was given the name because of the earth being divided, which likely refers to the Babel incident. His father Eber probably married after everyone was scattered, and may have married a close relative. This is assuming that people were scattered according to their family groups. This would again have reduced the gene pool, which had its effect on Peleg.
      Later on there is another smaller age reduction in Jacob, and Joseph, because they were products of marrying relatives, but not too close. Isaac married his cousins daughter, and Jacob married his cousins.
