Routine corrections: Resident Evil FOR SURE came out in 96, and Dino Crisis also had full 3D backgrounds. Thank you for watching, let's all focus on the miracle that I made two videos in one month! :P

Anyway, I’ve noticed you have blurred your name out on all your old videos. Did you start getting crazy stalked, (again), or something? I haven’t used your name here obviously in case that’s why but I just wondered...

I'm a little surprised no one ever elaborates on the line where Dahlia tells Harry that his arrival was foretold by Gyromancy. For those who don't know, Gyromancy involves drawing a circle on the ground, around which words, or the letters of the alphabet are written. The person doing the divination then stands inside the circle, and spins around and around until they become incredibly dizzy, at which point they stumble and fall across one of the letters or words. This is repeated until enough letters or words are obtained to produce an intelligible word or sentence. So, picture Dahlia doing that for a couple of hours...

Ohh, Silent Hill. I remember when I first saw it. I was seven and I was often spending the night at my grandpa's house. My uncle, who also live there, was the only person I knew who had PS1. We often played games togheter, he was doing stuff on the controller and I was digging through the walktrough from one of his many gaming magazines, in case we stuck. Which was very often, since niehter of us knew English that well. At one day, he told me that he got SH. We were pretty hyped for it and later that night we started to play. And that day my life changed. The 7 years old boy, from Eastern Europe who I was, convinced that games are mindless fun for children, were scared shitless and intruged at the same time. Since that moment over 20 years passed, and I am still no afraid of the most horror games in the market and I'm still full of rescpet and well... fear towards any of the first 4 installments of the SH series.

Hey, I really enjoyed your story. It brought me back to spending time with my late grandfather playing Tomb Raider, and Metal Gear Solid. As a young American boy, the fact that an old man like my grandfather loved gaming resonated the fact that anyone can appreciate video games quite deeply with me.
He died last year. His favorite thing to do was watch me play Red Dead Redemption, after he lost most of his vision and therefore his ability to play games, although he would often fire up SOCOM II, just to try. I wish he could have experienced RDR2 with me

I remember being a friend of my parents' house while some kids were playing RE1. It was so far out of my scope of comfort with games that I couldn't even imagine playing it back then.
Nowadays I don't feel that way so much about RE1 or anything, they're just games, but Silent Hill... well, I tried to play Silent Hill Origins on PSP once and I returned the rental pretty quick. I wonder if I'm at that stage where I could play through more or not. I have played 4, which I really liked, which is why, I think, I was willing to try Origins, but I wasn't ready at the time. Considering I was even able to open up Soma and even Gone Home (a not-horror game that creeped me out the first time I tried booting it up and I quit), not to mention beating them both, I may be ready to start digging into more horror games.
I'm dipping my toes into the horror genre more and more, but I still have my limits. I just don't have the patience for frustration, so a lot of them are just out of the question with their instakill enemies everywhere. Silent Hill doesn't generally have that issue, though, it's all atmosphere. I don't know if there are any I'd actually want to play, though. 4 was kind of an exception for me and most of the later ones after that just sucked.

I'm actually glad, someone feels as strong about Lisa as I do. Her tragic fate was one of the things most memorable for me after I had finished the game, and whenever I talk with people, they just call her "that nurse."
I got the bad ending at first, so when I heard about a better ending, I was happy, because I thought you could save not only Cybil and Cheryl, but also Lisa. I mean, after all, she was also just a victim of this, and not one of the bad guys.
When I finished the game for a second time, I was happy that Cheryl was saved, that Cybil was alive, but it was a disappointment that Lisa was still dead.
And yeah, compared to the other characters Harry meets still running around in time, her reaction is the most human, the most vulnerable.
Of course, she is afraid that Harry would leave her again. Who wouldn't in that situation?

This is honestly the best review video on Silent Hill 1 on UA-cam, and I've watched a lot of Silent Hill youtube videos. Nearly everything you said about what made SH1 a great game was 100% on point, and made me really happy to hear, it was like you were putting things into words that I always felt but couldn't express as nicely as you did. l loved how much you discussed the gameplay and pacing of the game, not enough is said about those elements in my opinion, most videos on SH1 focus on the game's plot. SH1 has an amazing plot, but its gameplay contributes greatly to the hopeless, terrifying atmosphere. You picked up on little things in the game that are important but not many youtubers mention, not just the obvious stuff that everyone knows, such as the fog, the radio, ya know?
I was nodding in absolute agreement when you talked about the first cutscene with Dr. Kauffman, the feeling of relief when you dash from a foggy street with monsters nipping at your heels and into the relative safety of a deserted house, the visceral and brutal sensation as you stomp wounded enemies to death, and of course the heart-rending tragedy of Lisa Garland's fate. About halfway through this video, I said aloud "This guy gets it!"
Silent Hill 1 has had a huge effect on me creatively and emotionally, in a similar fashion to how you describe the game's role in your life. It's immensely enjoyable listening to a fellow appreciator of this very special game discuss about how this game personally affected you, the emotions you felt, it's so much more interesting than just the wikipedia article facts and popular fan theories that we usually get with youtube videos on the subject.
It's hard to believe that Silent Hill is over 20 years old, I can remember the first time I ever played like it happened today. Since then I've become jaded and sick of the Silent Hill franchise, the string of mediocre-to-embarassingly bad games and movies put out by uncreative people cheapened it, polluted it, ran it into the ground. In my heart, I buried Silent Hill, and moved on, I would always hold the game itself in a state of near-religious reverence but no longer did I seek out content or fandom groups concerning Silent Hill. I was so over it that I wasn't even interested in trying out the P.T. demo, which I know was a brilliant piece of media. Konami reducing the Silent Hill franchise to pachinko machines was just another nail in the coffin, none of the original creators of the game had been involved in years. But this video, taking us back to the glory days of 1999, the tail-end of a truly incredible decade for video games, made me relive the fascination, the fear, the sorrow, and the inspiration the game conjured up in me like a demon summoned by a mysterious, Lovecraftian cult. Silent Hill 1 feels fresh, cool, scary, darkly beautiful again for me, it's got me thinking about digging up my old copy, firing up the PS2, and playing it again. I haven't felt that in a long while.
It's a shame we can't get more Silent Hill games that are brilliant like SH1, but at least we got SH1, thankfully it still holds up. Like you said, Silent Hill 1 was created under very exceptional circumstances, which probably will never be recreated, but that's what makes the game so unique, such a classic, such a gem, such a work of art.
TL;DR - Basically I just wanna say "Great job, loved the video. Deep thanks from a Silent Hill fanatic."

Dahlia says "AGLAOPHOTIS!" in the same scene where Kaufmann tosses it, and there is a memo you can read that talks about it, saying it's a red liquid and has demon exorcising properties or something to that effect. You're right that the order shoulda been reversed though.
But anyway, great video. I miss Silent Hill so much.

    • @daikaiser9394
      @daikaiser9394 3 роки тому +6

Well I don't think the order should really be reversed, after all the hole Kaufmann side quest is commonly missed during the first playthrough, so the whole saving Cybil is more of a bonus. After all I don't think they were expecting players to get the Good Ending on the first run.

Remains my favorite Silent Hill game; I played it on release and what struck me about the visuals was they were strongly reminiscent of the movie Jacob’s Ladder. And the way the (NIN or Skinny Puppy like) music builds at the beginning of the game is genius… as are the weird moving camera angles.
Even at the time, I could see how this was orders of magnitude more sophisticated than the goofy b-movie game Resident Evil, which was always more comical than scary.
And nobody seems to mention this but surely Clock Tower on the SNES was a heavy influence on Silent Hill.

There were some really neat touches in the movie - Good Bad Flicks did an exploring video on it, and it makes you realise the creators did love the game. It's not a brilliant film, and I do have mixed feelings, but I did enjoy it more having watched it a couple more times. Even if you didn't enjoy it, the Good Bad Flicks is a really nice little video that might make you feel some joy for it.

Everything you said about the way Lisa's story beats impacted you is incredibly wholesome. Truly, Team Silent were a godsend.
About aglaophotis; you get the extra encyclopedia memo in the otherworld hospital director's room in a Next Fear game. It's mentioned there by name and by Dahlia when Kaufmann throws it. It's kind of expected of the player to replay and stumble into Kaufmann at the resort and eventually figure out the use for the plastic bottle. I think that's why I wouldn't consider Good+ canon, but Good, since you even get a full FMV of the death and most players would not figure it out so easily on their own.
    When's SH2? Next week? 🤓

I was playing Sillent HIll for the first time in 2005, and it hit me like train. Its really one of the best horror and atmospheric games, in same spot as original Clock Tower . It was also the first REAL horror game that I played. Before that I wasnt much interested in horror movies and games but after experiencing this game I got really intrested what was the inspiration for this game. And this is how I discowered Lovercraft, King, Lynch, Junji Ito, Del Torro, creepypastas and many other things....

Great video. Totally agree with the soundtrack, I actually purchased this (on an old-timey physical CD ;) ) I still feel traumatized by some of the tracks.
This is STILL my favourite horror game, the use of the unseen enemies chasing you in the dark is unrivalled.

On the subject of games that actually made us cry, so far the only one that's done it for me was "Zero Time Dilemma," when a character discovers they are the long lost child of another character and they embrace with speechless relief. (Being vague cause spoilers.) That entire storyline, with two characters living out the rest of their lives together trapped in an underground room, really moved me.

    • @we-must-live
      @we-must-live 2 роки тому +1

for me, it's gotta be Asura's Wrath - game might look like stupid fun (and it is!), but it's got a well-defined and impactful story that, for lack of a better description, revolves around the main character beating the shit out of everyone involved with killing his wife and stealing his daughter, crescendoing with the titular character punching the god of his world so hard in the face that the universe collapses, allowing his daughter to build a new one in her innocent visage.
it may not be subtle in it's storytelling, but a story about a dad willing to literally fight GOD to protect his daughter doesn't need to be subtle!

There's a community made launcher for SH1, wich is basicly emulator but with a bunch of features, like graphics options and stuff. Not perfect, but definitely the best way to play it on PC nowadays, since Konami doesn't give two fucks about it, aparently.

Silent Hill has made to PC via ports and emulators with very mixed results. I think the emulators typically do the best jobs while the ports like the 'HD remasters' are best disowned entirely.

This game is WAY beyond just a Resident Evil clone. Resident Evil is about how science can lead to catastrophe if not handled properly. This game is a psychological journey through guilt, loss and having to deal with those things before they destroy you. Very different concepts are addressed in the two game series.

it's been a couple of years so someone may have mentioned it, but the ritual that Dahlia performed on Alessa didn't involve flame. It was basically a pregnancy ritual and Alessa's stress levels (along with having psychic powers) triggered a boiler explosion and she was burned that way. There is a memo in the game (that wasn't included in all versions) that tell of the boiler explosion. SH Origins as well as the first movie really hammered it in with the whole burning ritual thing.
Also, i actually agree with you that the plot point of the aglaophotis could have been done much better. I have a feeling that what the devs wanted to do was have the player not even know what the red liquid was. I think they were counting on the player doing the first run wrong, learning from kauffman using the liquid, getting one of the lesser endings and realizing they have to go through it all again and do things right. They didn't count on the fact that many players explore every nook and cranny lol so if you get everything the first time then yeah the aglaophotis part of things is poorly told.
Aside from all that I've been seriously enjoying the vids you put out. First Parasite Eve and now this. Your editing is genius

That right there is what younger generation don't understand , AND vice-versa, we older generations groan at the thought of remakes not being 100% faithful to the original but we have to understand that standards change over time . That's what team silent did back then , they changed the standards

Funny enough from that 2019 review towards the end, I only played this last year as well for Halloween. Fantastic game, did not expect to become as immersed as I did. The last stretch maybe is too large of a stretch in terms of padding, but otherwise a v good game. Good video too :)

I was introduced to this game when I was obviously too young to even watch it, I used to have nightmares every single night. But I still loved it though, I was intrigued...pulled into the world of Silent Hill. To this day, it's still one of my all time favorites and what made me fall in love with Horror.
But that whole Lisa scene. I watched my older brother playing the whole game but that part was the only one he told me to close my eyes as it would traumatize me. He had a point, this scene is so powerful, that music still haunts me!

Great review, as usual. The 53 minutes felt like 20, which is always a good sign! As for the game, I managed to ruin the experience by playing it without using the lock button, which made my playthrough horribly frustrating (especially when you were forced to fight a group of enemies, like these damn dogs). However, the creepiness of it all kept me hooked, and I finished it nonetheless.
Now that i know what went wrong, I can safely say that it is as good as everyone says, even though the shooting is not as fun as the other survival horrors of the time (which is fine, since it wasn't the focus of this project). The soundtrack is especially scary, and perfectly fits the horrible themes we are forced to deal with, like child sacrifice and fanaticism... Anyway, keep up the good work: you deserve all the recognition you're beginning to get!
