    As I alluded in the video, there’s a host of accessories out there of different types, price points and variants and I didn’t have the space/time to feature them all so if I’ve missed your favourite or haven’t covered the genre you’re interested in then, by all means, give me a shout if you need help. This video was Pro-Ject centric, I know, but please use the video as a source of inspiration, if nothing else. I hope it can get the ol’brain ticking over, at least when thinking about your particular turntable :)
    The Ground-IT is priced at £110
    The Acryl-IT *for the RPM 1* is £148 (from Amazon)

    I’ve got an RPM 1 and have upgraded the platter, mat, interconnects and feet this way. The platter was the most important upgrade as it improved the sound greatly and got rid of static which plagued the stock platter. It looks awesome too.

    Paul, thank you for your sage advice. I bought and used this same model of turntable a few years ago (RPM 1.3 Carbon). Late in 2019 we decided to upgrad the Cartridge from the (US Specific Sumiko Pearl) to the Ortofon 2M Blue, the platter to the Acryl-it, and the mounted "feet" to height adjustable isolation style spikes in a heavy steel with rubber mounting discs . Overall, the performance was much improved. There is still a bit too much background noise and vibration for my taste, thus the upgrades will continue. Thank you for traveling down this path at roughly the same time as I have been. Your grasp of language is commendable and you are surely an "audiophile".

    Loving this channel... Returning to the vinyl fold after 25 years in the digital desert. Now the family have flown the nest I'm on a medium term project to convert a small spare room into a study/man cave which will include setting up a (proper) hi fi.
    Deck is an old Revolver which I've fitted a new belt, re-oiled the bearing and a new Goldring E3. For the amp, I've treated myself to a Cambridge Alva phono stage and for the amp & speaker, still debating whether the old Arcam amp and Mission 760’s will be too much for the tiny room, so going to experiment with feeding the pre amp into a Mission Aero smart amp/speaker. I know this sounds a bit naff, but it does sound very good and will also allow a streaming option in the room. Much happy playing around ahead !

    That's very interesting. Makes me feel better about shopping around the $500 price point for turntables knowing that I can improve it later with relatively small purchases. Turntables seem like largely something where if you buy quality you can keep the same one for a long time, so having an upgrade path is very appreciated.

    Did exactly as you said. The turntable in question is a project essential 3. New mat, interconnects, power supply and after 18 months use swapped the stylus from an om 10 to a 20. The stylus making the biggest difference in sound quality. Shopped around and got everything on sale, managed to spend less than £200. Happy days. Well kind of, I am ready for an upgrade turntable, please don't tell my Wife.

    Thank you Paul, that is really useful. I bought a Thorens entry level turntable on a deep discount to play my old records. But in the 2 years I have owned it I have rediscovered the joy of vinyl and bought a tonne of new records. I upgrades the AT cartridge to a Nagaoka MP 100 and it made a huge improvement. I will try a cork mat and maybe new feet. My plan is to not replace the turntable until I can buy something that is a big jump from where I am now.

    Recently found your channel and i love it. I have a 17 year old Pro-ject Debut SE II which hasn't had much use these past few years. Im currently in the process of adding upgrades which is a lot of fun. Ungraded the Ortofon 510 mk ii cartridge to an Ortofon 2M Blue the other week and wow, what an improvement. Just ordered the aluminium sub platter plus a new belt. I also added the leather mat plus new phono cables.

    Upgraded the LP60X with an elliptical stylus from LP Gear and the felt mat with an acrylic. All just to see what this little beginners beauty was really capable of after fulfilling it's capacity. Oh yeah, definitely a difference in clarity and bass response. Sounds magnificent, not that there was much wrong with it's default sound but I've definitely experienced substantial evidence that modifications like this do work.

    1) Added the Acryl-it platter to my Acryl-ic plinthed turntable - Reduced image muddiness and improved L-R imaging and depth.
    2) Added a 4.4lb copper disc atop the 2 lb Acryl-it platter to increase rotational inertia - Stabilized greatly any speed variation.
    3) Added a Hexmat Yellow Bird isolation mat - Lowered the noise floor, improved midrange clarity, and brought sparkle to treble.
    4) As a last step I'm awaiting delivery of an Origin Live Discovery 1 Phono Amp. This will most likely exhaust the upgrade budget.
    Many Thanks :)

    I really love upgradability, that's why I bought a U-Turn Orbit and it's been great. Eventually I plan on upgrading to a more mid range turntable so I'm thinking either the Pro-Ject RPM 1 or the Debut Carbon Evo since they're the same price and throwing a bunch of mods on it. Upgrading an entry level to a mid ranger and the a mid range to an almost high end, this is gonna be a fun journey.

    Hi Paul. The single biggest improvement i made to my Pro-Ject Perspex magnetic suspension turntable was to remove the existing arm and install a Hadcock uni-pivot tonearm with Cardas cables and a Denon D 110 high output moving coil cartridge. I got the arm at a very attractive price. Also, the Denon cartridge costs the same as it did in 1980.

    A lot of valuable ideas here for a basic turntable. You did omit the fact that when adding a mat to the platter that the arm height should be adjusted to compensate for the added thickness. Assuming the arm can be adjusted.

    Dear Paul,
    Thanks for posting this video, very helpful!
    I am trying to workout something, hopefully you could help me!
    I have a Pro-Ject Essential II with factory fitted OMB-5E cartridge. I certainly enjoy it but after few years of using it I have grown to a point where I want more! Now I can simply upgrade to a OM20 which as of today would cost me £130ish. But I am tempted to jump to a RPM 1, partly because of its looks and potential benefits due it being a better turntable in general (well, based on what I have been hearing from others and your recommendation), and the fact I can jump go higher by upgrading the stylus to other 2M series ones such as blue, bronze etc but that would cost me £375 as of today (which I am ok to spend). I did consider RPM3 but that would mean I also upgrade my photo stage as well as I use a CA preamp meant for MM.
    Could you please help in my thinking.. how should I approach this?

  • @rufiorules
    @rufiorules 3 роки тому

    Upgrading has been a huge part of turntable ownership for me. The price difference between my RP6 and an RP8 (the next step up in the range) it just too much. So mods are helping the RP6 reach a little further. I've an acrylic platter, aluminium sub-platter, better belt, mat, bearing and an Audio Technica VM95 cart that has 4-5 steps of upgrades alone. I'll be looking at isolation next, I think.

  • @stephen579

    I have a Rega turntable that has every available upgrade that I could find, inc TTPSU, Silver wired and foam-filled RB250 arm, ceramic bearings, acrylic 22mm platter, stainless steel sub-platter, twin belt 24v dc motor, spiked isolation feet and a custom-built solid wood plinth that has a piano black gloss finish.

  • @robh9079
    @robh9079 3 роки тому

    I do have a hankering to take a Rega-alike, ditch the plinth and replace it with a serious wodge of baltic birch (like Well Tempered...) with rubber or something integrated into a layered arrangement. The motor surrounded in sorbothane, or bonded to a plate that is sorbothane isolated. Some sort of decoupling from the arm board section - maybe a slot formed in the plinth filled with epoxy, or a slither of solid hardwood? Armboard - 1/32 ply leaves (modelling material) layered with sheets of carbon fibre/epoxy. Sorbothane sphere feet. Probably around £100 - view the expense as a 'day trip'!

    • @TheAudiophileMan
      @TheAudiophileMan  3 роки тому +1

      Yes. And no. It depends on the turntable and you and your ears. Some can settle down a system, reducing vibration around the bearing. Some go too far and kill dynamics. Also, clamps tend to work differently to stabilisers (weights).

    Hi Paul - very interesting review, I have bought a audio - technics LP 140XP. I know its not a true audiophile turntable as its mainly marketed for DJ’s - however I love the style of it and although the add-on DJ bits and bobs adds noise to the turntable. I have swapped the cartridge to the audio- technics VMN95E - on your recommend - I am very happy with the result. I wonder if you have done a review on Pre-amplifiers, if so I can’t see it and if you haven’t would you consider doing one. I would be very interested to hear what your views are, and would you say that you are better off with a pre-amp per say for improved sound quality or noise reduction. Would you think that it is better to get a pre-amp that is useable with both MM & MC cartridges so that when you upgrade you don’t have to buy another pre-amp. For us (and I include myself) who don’t have a small fortune to spend on up-grading - is it better to just buy a more expensive integrated amp, your thoughts would be welcomed - thank you take care, stay safe.

      I would heartily recommend a separate, external phono amplifier to improve the sound you have there. MC/MM? That depends on your budget. Right now? I would go for MM and a Pro-JEct MM Phono amp or a Rega Fono.

    Try a 50W 18v linear power supply (alloy shoebox variety). Good increase in detail. I would say if you are spending over £100 on a phono cable then try a QED reference for £70 and use the original earth connection. Make your own isolation platform from an A3 20mm acrylic sheet (£30) and four 15mm sorbothane dome feet (£12) - works really well and looks good.

I am looking at my tone-arm and wonder if it comes set a little high (maybe to allow for the thickness of an optional cork mat ? ).. all I did was set weight and tracking to 1.8 gr and hoped the arm was set correctly from factory... what do you think ?

    • @TheAudiophileMan
      @TheAudiophileMan  3 роки тому

      All Pro-Ject tonearms are set with a small degree of tolerance, which allows for the typically thicker after-market mats to go on without the cartridge having to ride up-hill. If you're balancing without a record on the platter this will be more noticeable.

    Morning Paul, firstly can I thank you for your honest reviews and different approach to youtube reviews. Whereas most reviewers pour over b roll after b roll I much prefer your face to face conversation about a product thank you :)
    May I ask you a question. Is the Project RPM 1 Carbon easy to change to a different cartridge, I think I've read you can adjust the height of the tonearm but it does look a bit fiddly.
    I much prefer the design, style and ease of use of the Project RPM 1 Carbon and wondered if you could spend less money on a it and upgrades and if it could then beat a Rega P3 with an Elys2 and Neo TT PSU which I currently have?
    I've never gelled with the Rega and prefer the simplicity of mechanically changing the speed by moving the belt rather than the awkward buttons on the Neo TT.
    I've even considered the Technics 1500C with its buttons on the plinth.
    What order would you rate the turntables mentioned?
    Sorry for all the questions just really don't want to make the wrong decisions but definitely don't want to stick with the Rega.

    • @TheAudiophileMan
      @TheAudiophileMan  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks for your kind words, Steve.
      Changing cartridges can be fiddly. Took me a while to get to grips with the things when I began writing for hifi magazines. The RPM 1 is average in terms of the demands it places upon you. If you need help, I'm always here as an option :)
      Upgrading the RPM 1 will eventually lift it above the P3 in sonic terms, sure.
      The 1500C is a very nice design, inherently compromised when compared to the RPM 1 in sonic terms but it depends on your needs and requirements and make sound isn't the only priority.

      I have a carbon evo and not even a week later bought the acrylic. I'm fairly sure you're not supposed to place a mat on the acrylic platters. I'm not sure just how much the acrylic platter helped. I had the hum in my system eliminated but I also did move the turntable ever so slightly on the table it's on. I'd have to do more testing with the default platter and such. Hope you've been enjoying your TT so far.

      I'm fairly new to turntables and kind of went with the most recommended one. I originally wanted to get the audiotechnica lp120x but heard how much better sounding the carbon debut evo was. Only thing I'm having minor issues with is static. The hum I had was probably due to the TT being too close to a speaker. I moved it away and it was gone. Once I got the arcyl it, I put it back in its original position with a different orientation and the hum is absolutely gone.
      Just gotta figure out this static issue now.
      I might consider a corkmat purchase as I hear those help with static as well. I cleaned up all my records as well. Honestly just need to find time to spend listening and adjusting.

    Pro-Ject RPM 1 looks to be expensive i did a google search $500 to $1000 usd.
    one upgrade you can do on that model is if the motor belt pulley is removable and if you have access to a 3d printer you can make a larger pulley so you can play 78's and you will need a special needle as some 78's can be destroyed by the standard 33/45 needle or you can destroy the needle as some 78's use a different modulation method.
    you can also make a smaller motor pulley and run 16's and you may need a center adaptor if you then intend to play the records intended for a seeburg 1000 music system as they use a much bigger center hole.
    for the rpm1 you would want a dust cover if you are serious into keeping it clean.

After that I put on top of that the cork mat. But now I have a new problem: the distance between the needle and the disc is considerably reduced. Maybe barely noticeable on the edge of the disc but definitely not so on the center where, even when engaging the lever, the needle still make contact with the surface of the disc. I think I have to increase the vta but the instruction manual is useless in that regard. How do you manage to adjust the height of the tonearm in this RPM-1 after moding it? I would remove the mat. The acrylic platter will probably be sonically superior without it anyhow. The only mat I would use for an acrylic would either be the Achromat or a more expensive decoupled mat like a Hexmat. For your deck, the bare platter will be best.

They change the sound significantly and no need for the acrylic platter which probably used, you should not even use a mat!!!
