    I am now planning a future video in which I will try my darnedest to mod the EVO. The idea is to utilise items such as an Acrylic platter, a VTA adjustment plate (with Quintet Blue cartridge), an Aluminium sub-platter upgrade, new isolation feet plus upgrade mats. Its going to take a little while to arrange and gather this gear together but, be assured, it's on the way!

And how would upgrading to the Sumiko Moonstone stylus with the same cartrdge benefit my listening experience? Enjoy your videos. Thanks!

    Fantastic review. I’ve had a Project Debut Carbon for about 10 years. I love it so much that I bought the Evo recently and set it up today on a second hi-fi system I’ve been fortunate enough to build. I would add something to the conversation but this review checks all the boxes. Buy with confidence, fellow enthusiasts.

    I bought a Fluance rt-85 recently after a lot of research. The reason I chose it was for three reasons - 1 it comes with an Ortofon 2m Blue (nude stylus) cartridge and 2 a removable headshell..3 an acrylic platter. I am nearly 83 years old and this will be the last tt i will buy...I have been an audiophile before vintage gear was available...The sound of a turntable imo is really based on the best cartridge you can afford..along with what type of amplifier and speakers you use...I also own a vintage taya tt with a Shure V15II cartridge that sounds just as good...loved your review though..

    I've recently bought this turntable because I was curious. Also, I made a new set-up with a Nagaoka MP-150 cartridge. What shall I say: All my expectations were exceeded - it seems to be impressive both quality in general and listening experience. This record player is here to stay!

    I’ve been researching for a couple of months on my very first entry-level turntable. For the longest I’ve been looking at the Rega-Planar 1…. After watching this and a couple other audiophile reviews I believe I’ve reached a tipping point and am going ahead in this direction. This is a cracking, top-shelf review. Well done.

    Excellent review, thank you.
    Bought my Pro-Ject 1 back in the early/mid 90's and it's still going strong, not a single fault. Prompted me to buy a debut carbon after considering others and it's been the same, utterly reliable.
    Have to say my daughter's LP5 does give off a tingle though and puts a smile on my face, it's a bargain and great fun.
    When I can get into a store again I'm hoping to test an AT-LPW50PB. Just fancy a bit of that fun for myself 😂🍻

    Hi. Thank you so much for your videos.
    A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to play vinyl, the 1st time since my teenage years, 40 years ago. I loved it.
    I’m really wanting to play records, and will be starting from scratch as I have no turntable, or in fact anything 😅.
    I’d be so grateful if you could guide me in what to get; turntable, pre amp (if needed), amp, speakers etc.
    I live in the uk, am happy to purchase 2nd hand if items are in sound condition.
    A few days ago I was looking at the Rega P1, then their slightly more expensive models, & now the Pro Ject debut carbon evo.
    I do like the walnut style of deck and poss speakers of whatever I buy.
    Sound quality is very important to me. I like a whole range of music; jazz, reggee, modern, opera, things like the velvet underground, pink Floyd. So I like to be able to hear individual instruments. I don’t tend to listen to things with a deep base.
    I don’t know if I would keep adding to what I buy, but might want the opportunity to gradually upgrade things. Probably my budget would go up to £1,400.00 at the absolute max, writing this I prob should say £1,100.00 as I’m feeling quite nervous - a month ago I was thinking £400 max😅. You can now see my concern!!!
    This video on the Pro Ject Carbon debut evo is now 3 years old so I’m wondering if there’s any new kit out there that I should be looking at. If you have any more recent videos would you mind sending me the links, I’ve tried scrolling up from the latest ones, you have been very busy, there’s so many.
    Any advice would be extremely welcome.
    I hope that your house move went well.
    Thank you

      Hi Wendy, looking at your budget and as Rega has caught your eye, a Planar 1 would be a good choice. It arrives with an arm and cartridge already set up. An external phono amplifier would be useful. Again, Rega offers the Fono Mini for just over £100. Cambridge offers an AXA35 integrated amplifier for around £350 while a pair of Q Acoustics 3020i speakers would do just fine. You can pick those up for around £200. Grab a set of QED speaker cables from Amazon (the best you can afford) plus a pair of QED interconnects (ditto) to connect the phono amplifier to the main amp. You might also want to consider a pair of stands for the speakers and some shelving for your HiFi components. That’s a broad outline for you. I don’t want to swamp you with information at this stage. See how that lit grabs you and come back if you have any questions.

      @@TheAudiophileManthanks so much for getting back to me so quickly, really helpful.
      I’m afraid that I have more questions, & I’m sorry if this is a stupid one….
      What would be the best turntable?
      A good quality vintage one from the 70’s,
      The Rega Plsner 1 (or other low to mid cost model)
      The Pro-Ject debut carbon evo.
      I’d love to hear your decision based on quality rather than cost. I might prefer to save up a bit.
      If I were to mix vintage with new, what would you recommend be the vintage items; turntable, amp, speakers etc?
      Visially, I find it calmer on my mind to look at more natural finishes (like wood), rather than glossy back, aluminium or bright colours.
      So I do like some 70’s things.
      Might be fun to mix & match if I could get things right.
      I’d really appreciate your views.
      Thanks
      Wendy

    • @TheAudiophileMan
      @TheAudiophileMan  8 місяців тому

      From your list? The EVO. I would avoid vintage unless you're prepared to pay extra for a full service of the item itself. If not? Be prepared to tackle ageing parts, breakdowns and expensive repairs. They can be a money sink. New gives you peace of mind, a warranty/guarantee and you get to do what HiFi is made for, playing music.

    • @TheAudiophileMan
      @TheAudiophileMan  3 роки тому

      Well, as I said in the pinned post at the top there, modding this turntable is planned. That includes cartridges. Hopefully that will help, even if only a bit because the video won't be wholly cart centric. Otherwise, sure I can have a think about a wider cartridge test. The said, the turntable and arm are going to have a big say in the results so I wonder just how valuable the results will be on a broader level - especially for those not interested in the reference turntable used in the tests. Something to consider, though.

    The pressed steel platter sets alarm bells ringing in my head for a different reason. Not because it could have rung like a bell (suitable platter mats could have helped with that issue if present), but because steel is magnetic which could adversely affect the performance of the magnetic cartridge. Your comparison with the Rega RP1 was interesting but was that comparison done with the crappy Rega Carbon cartridge? If so then it would be interesting to re-do the comparison with an upgraded cartridge fitted to the RP1 (e.g. Ortofon 2M Red, or Audio Technica AT-VM95E).

    • @TheAudiophileMan
      @TheAudiophileMan  3 роки тому +1

      And don't forget the record itself, in terms of magnetism. A good mat will help shield the cartridge from the platter but it an intriguing point you've made.
      As for your other point? I addressed this in the description and the pinned post above. This is an out of the box test. Each deck arrives as a package and I reviewed the package only. In this respect, changing the cart would be unfair to first-time buyers. I am considering a future modding video on the EVO which could include cart upgrades and comparisons of the type you mentioned.

    I'm leaning towards getting one of these since they upped the price tag on the Rega Planar 2, but the only videos I seem to find with sound examples are all the European versions which have the 2M Red on them. In America, we get the Sumiko Rainier instead, but I have yet to see any demos of that cartridge to see how much better it is.

    • @TheAudiophileMan
      @TheAudiophileMan  Рік тому

      If you're watching a review and they play a sound sample then you're wasting your time, Larry. You're not hearing the turntable or the cartridge. You're hearing the device that's playing your video. Nothing more than that. Even if you hear changes in 'tone' during the video, that sound has nothing to do with the original hardware.
      If you want to hear the actual product, arrange a demo with a dealer or call a dealer and request a home demo (an increasingly popular practice and well worth pursuing).

  • @labnine3362
    @labnine3362 2 роки тому

    The American offering of the EVO includes a Sumiko Ranier instead of the Ortofon 2M Red. I wonder which of the two performs better. I'm guess that the Sumiko setup is, but I'd love to hear a first-hand review. I have compared 2M Blue and Red on my RT85 and was underwhelmed by the brashness of both (with the Blue sounding almost the same but with better inner groove performance). I honestly prefer the more open/subtle Audio Technica VTM95SH, at least on the RT85.

  • @gilmehulal5045
    @gilmehulal5045 3 роки тому +6

    Very nice Paul, IMO , the 2M Red is a great cart which is a dominant component in the overall sound. The stylus which gives you more details and balance than the Rega Carbon spherical cart.
    The Rega Planar 2 , is only 399 pound and has a better tonearm and glass platter. Would be highly upgraded using the 2M red cart.

      I can certainly consider it, sure. For now: place the needle on the run-in part of the vinyl on the very outside. You'll normally see a bump or lip at the edge of a record...just inside that bit is where you want to place the needle or stylus as I call it. Look at the part in the light, it will look different from the inner grooves. It will look shinier. This bit is silent before the music starts.
      Upkeep? Keep the turntable dust free, keep liquids away from it. You should be fine mechanically for some time, especially with a new model.

    Paul, excellent review, highly detailed. I’ve got a Pro-Ject Debut something. As you say, there are many. It is the version prior to the one you reviewed. It has the same Ortofon red. I’m very happy with it, but let me get to my point 😂. I’m curious if you’ve heard of a turntable manufacturer called Uturn Audio? The product is called Orbit. It’s a US made table that has made some headway here. It’s a budget table but seems to be a step up from the usual suspects. I’m curious if you’d consider reviewing it.

      Hi Andrew - the Rainier is not for everyone. I try to convey its personality in my review so I hope viewers can make a judgement armed with some of the points in the video. The Red is more neutral in presentation although not quite as insightful as something like a Goldring E3.

      I normally do retain the same cartridge but in this case, I’m reviewing the package, off the shelf. As you would hear it out of the box. To change the cart would then involve an upgrade dimension and thus not consistent with the first sonic experience or what I was aiming for here. I should have explained that in the video.

    Hi there! I've been poring over all your videos (especially your Audiotechnica reviews), as I've been agonising over what turntable to get ... thank you for your invaluable resources!
    I have a very quick question relating to what is seemingly a Debut Carbon Evo clone (in terms of design at least): have you come across the Teac TN-280BT-A3 at all?
    This table seems to have all the things I desire as someone who is marginally beyond being a beginner to the hobby (e.g. adjustable counterweight, anti-skate, upgradable cartridge, etc., as well as Bluetooth, which would suit my temporary audio rig-up atm). It also is the same price at the AT120xBT, which was the other table I was investigating, yet it has more minimalist design like the Evo that would suit my living room. However, my big issue: there are very few reviews on UA-cam and *none of them* mention the actual sound! 😅
    If you had a moment, any thoughts you might have if you are familiar with this turntable (or if you might think of / see something a beginner might not notice!)
    Thanks so much!
    James

    Whoa, makes me look at my Rega differently now. I'm actually curious why you didn't include the Planar 1 in your comparison set. Isn't that the updated version of the RP1? I could be mixed up on that, but still would've been curious to see how the EVO stacks up vs. the Planar 1 (described here previously as "arguably the best-ever low-end budget turntable"). Great review nonetheless. P.S. Love the channel!

      That's very kind of you and, asI mentioned in a comment elsewhere here, there are improvements over the RP1 by the Planar 1, yes but their personalities remain generally the same and they retain a relevance in review terms.

    I'm looking for an affordable but good quality player. Fully automatic, heavy plinth, adjustable counter weight, reliable consistent motor, anti-skating,
    No bluetooth or usb. Nothing digital.
    Any recommendations?

      @@TheAudiophileMan if it could be in the 500 - 700 range that would be preferable. Also, what are your thoughts on the Dual 622?

    Is there a cheaper version of this turntable for budget guys? I’m pretty sure I read somewhere that these turntables can be upgraded, but is there a budget one people can slowly upgrade to eventually meet the same upgrades as this turntable? I know my explanation is horrible, but I have no other idea on how to ask it lmao

    Can you order this Project without a cartridge for a lower cost in the US? I'm very happy with my AT-VM95ML.

      I think the cart arrives as a bundled item, I'm afraid.

    Thanks great video, I've decided to go for the technics sl1200 G, as I find these offerings very bland and uninspiring. Keep up the good work 👏.
