"... spaceport. You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy. We must be cautious."

*it seemed that no matter how far civilization extended, how many places in the universe went from being the frontier to beacons of order, there were always those locations that served as refuges for those looking to hide from polite society. Smuggling, that ancient custom of crime that first saw its origins on Terran oceans, now took on a interstellar and rather complicated character. New Venture was one such location: a port located on a desert planet on the edge of human space. The real name of the planet had long been forgotten, for the smugglers, pirates, and other assorted criminals that went there called the planet Libertalia. New Venture saw a nearly daily stream of smugglers and pirates seeking to load and unload their stolen goods. A black market existed underground, beneath the surface structures of New Venture. Terraforming may now take decades instead of centuries, but the criminal elements looking for places to hide from the law didn't have that kind of time. You are one such smuggler, the captain of a ship that has taken on the contract of delivering vital cargo for a wealthy client. The client, a nobleman from a wealthy world in the outer colonies, is a rather unpleasant follow. A rich, bored snob that has a penchant for rare and exotic alien artifacts. He has agreed to have one of his agents meet you at New Venture, and you hope the deal goes well. The life of a thief may be free, but the consequences are far more dire*
