If White Diamond is as old and powerful as we think, it would make sense for her to include free will into her creations. When you think of her creations as toys, as a way to pass her time and entertain her, it would get boring pretty fast to play with 'soulless' toys. It would be much more entertaining to give those toy free will, a 'soul', so they can act on their own and be surprising, more entertaining, more interesting. Of course every smart creator (and I bet White Diamond is one) would include a method to take this free will away again, in case something goes wrong. If White Diamond really wanted to stop the gem war on earth, she easily could've ended it. But she didn't. It was probably the most fun she had in millennia. When you can call being mildly entrained 'fun' that is.
Its strange because even if the "physical" body can go through walls, the gem can't, like when Steven accidentally went too fast in that spaceship towards the Zoo? Maybe the wall if holographic or White Pearl isn't "real" but 100% a hologram sans gem or...
Easy: if we're going by "she abused Pearl/is an abusive mother figure" here, she may have built free will into her gems thinking, "Because I programmed my Pearl into a mindless zombie and built that up as an ideal, their will shall ultimately strive to follow her example regardless of their personal feelings and/or I'm still seen as the Alpha-Omega-Beta of the Gem World." It's benevolent dictatorship.
Free Will is the base of common sense for higher ranked Species, Gems DO have them so they can carry out an order rather it's hard or overbearing to withhold on the mind/heart ect, as for the rest they are laws because they made them to keep them in line to make sure they don't experiment with WHAT they are truly capable of *Rules keeps thoughts in check, Suppression Keeps fear in check Psychological or Violent Threats keeps them in doubt for the future if they do* think about it

White Diamond sees free-will as a game it's quite obivious with how she reacted to Pink Diamond's return saying "did you have fun with our little game?" White purposely let this entire thing happen probably because she was bored.
Another thing about white dimonds pearl caught my eye. Aside from having a scar over her eye, her gemstone is placed on her belly button. Yellow and Blue both have a pearl with the same gemstone placement as them but White's pearl has her gemstone on her navel, much like Pink dimond's and Pink's pearl (our pearl) has her gemstone on her forhead. Considering that the other two dimonds have their pearls' gemstones in the same place their dimond is, wouldn't it make sense for the same to apply to White and Pink's pearls. Then I remembered something from the episode when pearl tells us the entire pink dimond scandal. Pearl said that she was given to pink dimond. So... maybe our pearl was originally White's pearl, and she was given to Pink dimond in exchange for Pink's original pearl. Going by the theory that all pearls reflect the same personality traits as their dimond, you can infer that Pink dimonds pearl acted the same way Pink dimond did. Maybe White dimond saw this, and decided to give Pink a better pearl that would keep her more on task, considering that Pink's original pearl was child-like and a bit selfish, just like Pink dimond. Once the pearl-trade was done White was left with Pink's pearl who she corrupted or somehow brain-washed. This would explain why White's pearl has a scar. But I guess that's just a theory. Lol sorry if I pointed out the obvious.

It’s funny you should mention free will in relation to White Diamond, because about a year ago I made a comment on Swaggy’s video about White Diamond’s role in corruption, and originally theorized that perhaps White held control over all of Homeworld through her mind powers. I let go of that theory after some time, but now I think it holds some bearing after what we saw in the last episode, even if it only really applies to White Pearl. Here’s the comment: “Last week, I was thinking about the theory you mentioned about how each of the Diamonds (Yellow, Blue, and White) could've contributed individual attributes to corruption through their song. You mentioned Yellow being able to alter gems' physical forms, and Blue being able to manipulate gems' mental/emotional states. I was brainstorming, trying to figure out White's part. Then, the thought occurred to me-Pearl is another forehead gem. She can project different images from her gem, including copies of herself. This is actually not unlike how all gems project their physical forms from their gemstones (keep this in mind for later), except that Pearl can project additional holograms. Then, another thought occurred to me-what if White Diamond does the same thing? What if, somehow, her unique ability as a Diamond involves projection, and this somehow ties into corruption? I eventually came up with this: Blue Diamond is responsible for sending the emotions of the gems into disarray. Corrupted gems cannot make sense of their feelings, and cannot deal with them in a thoughtful, structured manner. This lack of control makes them fearful, and the only way they know how to cope is to act aggressively; they become like animals. Yellow Diamond destabilizes the physical form, making it vulnerable to dramatic changes in the gem's psyche. As we've seen from regeneration, gems can choose to make changes to their new forms, to a certain extent. Yellow essentially renders the body unstable, making it prone to changing its form against the gem's will, and outside of regeneration. More specifically, the gem's _self-perception_, or ego, becomes severely damaged, resulting in an equally-damaged outward projection. Because the gem has lost its sense of self, the door is opened for Blue to manipulate the emotions of the gem, resulting in a loss of control and self-regulation. And, because of Yellow's weakening of the body, White can now project the monstrous condition of the gem's mind into its form, robbing it of its more "human" physical capabilities. The voice box in the physical form and the language center inside the gemstone are both deformed beyond recognition, so the gem can't even speak. My original idea was that, perhaps, White Diamond controls the gems on Homeworld, basically projecting herself into their minds. In fact, that she did so while immobilized in a secluded location, which would explain why we haven't yet seen her. I thought that, while this was an interesting theory, it was a bit far-fetched. But then, I saw The Roundtable's video on his theory that White Diamond is actually the Homeworld planet itself, and was floored by how similar his and my theories were. His is that, while White herself is the planet, she is capable of projecting her own physical form so she can communicate with others-just like my hypothesis that White mirrors Pearl in her ability to project holograms of herself! It's slightly different from my idea in that she instead projects her will onto the other gems in order to control them, but I like his theory more. It also lines up with my idea that White for some reason doesn't move, is away from the other gems, and doesn't speak to them directly as a result. To put icing on the cake, I also hypothesized that White is "sleeping", yet somehow conscious-a lot like one might expect a planet to be! If both his and (most of) my theory are correct, they are strong evidence towards White's role in corruption being damaging the mind of a gem, and as a natural result, distorting its physical projection. I have crazy suggestion that came after watching AJ Universe's video "Steven Universe Theory - White Diamond's Sinister History" he suggest that Pink use to be the main Diamond and Leader of gem kind and in all honestly the amount of detail that goes to all types of gems from their looks, their personalities and abilities does fit more to be Pink's design and not White's. Consider this gems even though they are made for specific jobs they still have passions, skills and minds that can crave more. Look at Bismuth after Stars knows how long of doing same job she felt need for a change - meaning she wasn't satisfied with lack of variety in her life. ta the same time CG kinda kept same roles for their members but Rose allowed them evolve beyond purpose they were made for. With similarities between CG ((mainly post war)) and Diamonds there is similar feeling of...lack of progression after 'Death' of leader and doing things how that leader wanted to and perhaps like CG in first seasons Diamonds are more focused on keeping legacy left in their hands alive and the same. Even if not necessarily in ways Rose /PD wanted it to be kept alive. It became set in stone, unchanged and unchallenged because those who remained didn't knew where to take that legacy. Let me give more of example here ask yourselves: for how long Garnets as leader was playing things safe? How long they were doing things Rose's way? Even in kinder garden Kid episode garnet stated that they are bubbling corrupted gems to spare them suffering because 'that's what Rose wanted". Not to mention looking for corrupted gems and bubbling them was how CG were operating for millennia under Rose's lead. Nobody ever challenged those ways until Steven. Every risk and change of approach came to be because of him. As Rose's son ((and reincarnation in the way)) he was the one to put things into motion and bring back progress for CG even thought he is the youngest and with the least experience. Even when he didn't knew much about anything of gem things even as a goofball he was one to bring back life to Rose's legacy and make it blossom and evolve again. If we replace CG from early days with diamonds and Steven from beginning of the show with Pink...a lot of things look similar. Dynamics of the group, that Steven had to prove himself worthy CG like Pink tried to prove her worth as Diamond to be respected and taken seriously by those lose to them? To Pink/Steven not being ready to handle responsibilities CG/Diamonds had.. Even down to not being taken seriously even if they had valuable things to say they weren't heard out with seriousness they were being humored instead. Steven with Peridot's bots in stream between Warp Pads and Pink with how precious of Earth and life on it are. Everything seems to be happening in cycle with SU...Pink's life and 'rebirth' as a new person/gem and group dynamics with CG and Diamonds..
Holy smokes, no one else has asked the deep philosophical questions after the latest episode. It's always been "why has this character done this and that? What does their design possibly mean? And what will happen next?", but NOBODY has picked up the topic of free will in gems and then here comes Slice, doing THAT. Asking the big questions! I love it!!!
Maybe they have free will because they were originally built as such from a past leader? White diamond would never install free will given her character; just throwing it out here but if Pink Diamond was originally the leader of homeworld It would make sense. Free will is something no one can take away. If you switch the diamond insignia and place pink on the top, flipping it, and put white on the bottom, it would make the same insignia just with Pink on the top. It's an interesting idea. Also, Pink being an off colour WOULD make sense if she was originally red as if White took away her memories trying to 'cleanse her'. She couldn't exactly completely cleanse her giving her color not white, not red, but pink. As they were cleansing her this could affect her personality making them childlike. (and height we don't know yet) I'm actually shook, this makes so much sense to me.
Complete control on a widespread basis would make delegation difficult. It’s necessary to let gems retain free will so that the overlord can remain in her cocoon of perfection, never getting her nailpolish chipped.

I don't think that they'd consider it free will... I think to the gems, they'd consider it like innovation. And innovation can lead to imagination which can lead to abstract thought. Take our Pearl for example: she was simply following Pink's orders (when Pink asked her to imagine what it would be like to be down with the quartz soldiers) which lead to her innovative way of having Pink shapeshift into a quartz. From that, she got encouragement from Pink to continue her way of thinking which lead to Pearl imagining things that hadn't been asked of her, which can be taken as "free will". A gem needs this built in mechanism to be able to adapt in different planetary situations/environments.
You know I’ve never really thought of that. Perhaps they can think freely due to different reasons regarding each gem’s rank and purpose. I can see tacticians having free will so they can think of invasion and battle strategies. I imagine advisors having free will so they can offer suggestions to the diamonds on how to better their empire. Pearls possibly having free will so they can use their imagination to find new ways to entertain the diamonds whenever the diamonds can’t think of ways themselves or are too much in a rut to do so. Even soldiers probably have free will because if they didn’t, the diamonds would probably command them to fight an army but not know if those soldiers are losing because the diamonds are too busy doing other important business while there’s no soldier to stop fighting, come up to them, and tell them that the enemy has the upper hand. Gems with no free will would paradoxically be less effective in some regards, as they are limited to the thoughts, ideas, and imaginations of just four diamonds. If those four diamonds couldn’t think of a plan, there wouldn’t be anyone to give them input, as everybody else would just be puppets each diamond controls or commands. Additionally, while gems with no free will might be efficient in some regards, having all of your subjects just be either puppets you control all day or characters whose actions you code, makes it less worthy to have said subjects than to have subjects who have opinions and their opinion is that they legitimately fear you, as opposed to you just talking to yourself via sock puppet and having the sock puppet say they fear you. Am I making sense? This made sense in my mind but reading this makes it seem like a mess of vague words. I’m hoping this gave at least some people a little insight on my thoughts.
Slicey, going out on a limb here, im getting the vibe that maybe White harvests gems in some fashion. Maybe that's why she isn't like the others: because her power could be generated by other gems and the more colonies the more power. Quit giving me ideas dagnabit.
We all assume that every gem has free will, but we have only seen gems from three out of four courts that compose Homeworld: Pink, Yellow and Blue. I don't think White Pearl's condition is exclusive to her, but rather all of White Diamond's gems have been brainwashed by her. Maybe every gem we've seen so far has feelings because Pink, Yellow and Blue have feelings themselves, so they would have wanted their gems to be the same. That would not be the case with White, though.
Free will is needed for the initiative - Be it technological advancement, strategic thinking or adaptation to a changing environment (colonization). If the gems had no free will and work only on orders the very few "thinking" gems would have to give out every single order directly and each time a new problem would show up. That would be VERY time consuming.
I watched one of your videos from last year talking about morganite, and I think we're going to meet that gem in the Steven universe movie. Even the thumb nail, morganites hair is the same as one of the characters in the Steven universe trailer when the heart was spinning. But when they showed her character on the spinning heart on the trailer, the heart was upside down, so that means she might be the villain.
I have a huge break! Pink diamond is the robotic legs, yellow & blue are the arms, and white it the upper body and head! It makes a full robot. Just like the arrangement of their gems big triangle. And maybe "obsidian" has something to do with that robot together.

Well mostly because they can think. If quartz couldn't think, they wouldn't be able to interpret their orders. Gems that make things need to think through the process in order to build whatever they are building. Most jobs gems have require brains/thoughts. And with those things comes a personality commonsense and free will. The diamonds are persuading gems that they have no free will. And it works, most of the time. Gem destabilizers are needed in case something happens that causes the gem to accually think though what is going on. Or if someone explains the truth then the gems uses commonsense to see what side they are on... Or the brainwashing/persuasion worked so well, the gem still beilives homeworld's side.
Gems' physical Appearance are Hard Light projections. Which is why they can "shapeshift" and easily change base forms upon reformation. Being that White Pearl's gem doesn't look Broken, that Means at the Very least that White Diamond Told her (if Not Forced her) to Look the way she does.
It’s not only free will but free thinkers that home world needs. It’s need to have gems that are able to think for themselves if there is an absence of an order. For example general maintenance of home world buildings would have to be conducted by free thinking gems as each building would have a unique maintenance issue that would have to be addressed. There is no way that any type of leader could predict the countless possibilities of this scenario
Has anyone noticed that pink Diamond ship are legs, meaning she's in the bottom position, yellow and blue diamonds ships are arms, higher than pink position, and white diamonds is the torso and head, the highest position. I wonder if their ships can all combine?
Hey, I was hoping you could make at theory video about weapons. You see, it occurred to me that if Rose Quartz is Pink Diamond, why is it that she's the only diamond we've seen having a weapon, being her shield. Is it possible the OTHER diamonds also have weapons, if so, what would they be? Of course the counter the theory would be her development in general, being that, she is smaller and "still a child".
Before I clicked on this video, I've been seeing people theorizing that White Diamond knew about Pink's plan and about the Gem War before it even happened and Pink coming to Homeworld even though it was Steven who went to Homeworld but due to how White reacted to Steven, it creepy to say that White knew things were gonna go this way so she prepared herself for it
theres some philosophical thing behind free will, although i forgot what term it's called. it's more like it's not exactly free will if the choices you have are limited; if you really had free will, you would have been lost, unsure what to do in a sea of "opportunities". so in a way, i think the "free will" in this scenario is a subtle way to get gems to not immediately question anything and follow orders. as stripping a gem of their free will wouldn't lead to technological advancements; they'd keep having to ask the diamonds how to do this, how to do that.
Like you said, emotions such as pride and sistership are useful and can be manipulated. We've seen this through Blue Diamond's powers. Extreme sadness can debilitate. I imagine Blue can harness more than just sadness however, she wasn't always an emotional wreck.
SliceofOtaku , do you remember Connie and Steven in Open Book? We saw a Connie that Steven creates with a white dress, an eye patch on the LEFT eye and poms in her hair. I distinctly watched that episode again for the foreshadowing of white's pearl. It scares me to think of white pearl's personality beyond the mind control. Not to mention the fact the book is called "destiny's end" and how destiny is an overall theme of the series with Steven.
If White diamond had control over every gem I believe the damage of Homeworld caused her to focus her power to holding the planet together. White left a mark on the gems making them think that free thinking is wrong due to years of not having it
I think 'free will' arose in gems not necessarily because "free will" itself is good, but a flipside view of--because being able to adapt to new problems/situations and problem solve around them are valuable characteristics to have. The impression of White Pearl is very robotic, and White Diamond herself felt very...scripted, but if taken to the extreme and EVERY gem made was made to behave as robotic, then gemkind might've eventually encountered problems that their 'programming' or brute-forcing would not be able to solve. By including openness to their programming, gems aren't hard-coded the answers, they're able to *learn*, and being able to learn can lead to decisions and discretion needing to be made. Imagine how inefficient it would be if White Diamond had to micromanage the orders of every single gem. Maybe once upon a time she had to do that, but surely past a gem-count threshold, White Diamond would've had to admit micromanaging an entire civilization is quite time consuming. So what I'm saying is basically....White Diamond made middle managers.
i think that gems have empathy built in maybe because thay are made of "life juice" so they kinda have no choice, and maybe white diamond is mafe of something else or even somewhre else...like a star anf maybe thats why she is "addicted" to them...who knows

Steven Universe has yet again delivered, I must confess I was starting to be skeptical but the crewniverse has outdone itself and wait I'm not sure if anyone else thinks so but it looks like the diamonds will inevitably fuse especially after looking at the fact that each of the of the diamond ships seem to be dividends of a body(white diamond's being the one Steven and pearl got into), maybe it is some sort of foreshadowing though who knows these days.

i think free will is somethings gems have s a "design flaw" that came with sentience. And i do think that WD could take it like she did with white pearl, but the process damages the gem, that could be why she cant move her limbs.or WD has to directly control the gems she takes the freewill of, like puppets and her stredged out arms connect to diffrent gems she is controlling all over homeworld. Maybe she has spend the eons she spend on homeworld perfecting the controll and making it the new threat for the CG as they embrace freedome.
Free will has to be an integral part of a gem so they can carry out orders in a sensible and efficient way, they are just being stopped from developing or advancing with what they can do because there is a set rule or standard that will result in the shattering of said gem I believe. They live in fear basically

Free will allow Gems to be free agents. They can continue to complete their objective on their own without supervision even exceeding it. Peridot is a perfect example. Her mission was to watch over the Cluster. But when she was trapped on Earth when she hid for weeks and even almost killed Garnet and Pearl. She kidnapped Steven. She even contacted Homeworld. This is something a mindless drone could not do.
She finds it entertaining is my guess. She is amused by it and wants to see how far it can go. Which is probably why she was not so shocked that Pink was alive or shocked about Steven. A frightening thing to consider is what if she already knows Steven is not Pink but her son? All the other gems seemed to be confused by Rose/Pink's choice of form but White did not blinked or bat an eye at it. Like she already knew what Steven was. That is the scary thing to me at least and if she does know what he is then what does that tell for the future of Steven.
I think the freewill aspect is for gems to be able to fight better. They need some creativity to win in fights, also that it's easier to have others do the planning than just a diamond doing it all for 1 race. White Diamond probably just nudges gems minds and their thoughts in the direction she wants. Get them to do what she wants, but let them still be able to think creatively

Oof your questions at the end of the video reminds me of my A.P Literature class and the question my teacher asked one day: What is Morality? Is it Real? This goes along the lines of 'free will v. fate'. Is it fate for these gems for have free will or is it their free will to take a different path in their fate ( like, instead of working with Yellow Diamond like fate had for Peridot, she went against that fate with her own free will to choose her own fate). It's a tricky question (Just fyi, my class decided that morality is just a social construct to keep people in line with rules made up to inhibit deviant behavior.... It was a trippy conversation)
I'm glad I'm not the only one to think this! If the Gem society wanted to be the most "efficient" society with no rebellion what so ever, the idea of Gems having free will doesn't fit Homeworld's standards. This is why I think White Diamond doesn't care, accounts for it and uses her mind to out-smart or break gems, or was never always in power.
If Gems are almost constantly in this state of military expansion my guess would be that they keep free will so that they be able to learn, adapt and change to counter ever changing enemy forces. There's also a chance that if White did create Gems that she wanted them to have personality because the idea of ruling mindless drones was unappealing to someone prideful. My favorite theory though is that Gems are basically Galatea. They were created by some being that wanted to make a powerful, beautiful race to be his legacy but either he died or the Gems didn't meet his crazy high standard and were cast out. Having no direction they began mindlessly expanding because that was the masters last order. Fanfiction over.
Probably because a mindless drone does not have a contingency plan for every possible outcome -- that would be impossible to program into a computer of any sort. Free will is required for a Gem to properly deal with any possible situation; a mindless drone would often get stuck on planets that Homeworld is unfamiliar with.
These are some interesting thought regarding why (if White Diamond does possess mind control abilities) free will exist. In tightly controlled societies, uniformity is a must and individualism is shunned. However, without some form of free will or free thought, there is very little innovation. Is it possible that free will and free thought (to an extend is kept) so the Gem Species doesn't become stale and continue in advancing. One could argue that there are specific gems that are designed to come up with such innovations, but it takes many points of view to come up with useful and much needed inventions and designs. Also if the Gem Species itself is Warlike (we don't know that for sure, but they are a conquering species) a bit of free will in the battle free can be a good thing. Free thinking Gems would be able to make strategic maneuvers without the guidance of a commander (in no communications were available.
I have a theory that white diamond can control gems by asking them to do something. For example, white could say to garnet, "unfuse." And after some mental struggles, she would do it. It would be kind of creepy if white diamond gave steven the crystal gems as unwilling servants to him. Also everything would come full circle, because now Steven would have to plot secretly with pearl, because she was given to him. It would be just like pink and pearl secretly planning.
White Diamond probably included free-will in gems programming simpky because worship and admiration doesnt feel as good when its preprogrammed vs when someone comes to their independant conclusion to give it to you of their own will
I find free will in gems to be a side effect of their capacity for interpretation of orders and rationale. They would need someone to reprogram and command them with every new task given otherwise. Also I'm nearly positive that the gem species is one based off of artificial intelligences that were designed as servants to a creator race. Therefore it is also a side-effect of their origin. How could a gem such as White Diamond be born naturally? She is the most potent thing in all of Steven Universe, and as a result of no mere chance I'd say. The fact that gems can be used to power technology is also no mere chance. I expect us to find a single supercomputer, broken and left in pieces as a reminder of White's supreme power and will. The same way that White Pearl is left broken and robotic, only acting EXACTLY as White wishes. It seems to me that gems had White as a propagator, finding her own will needing an extention to protect her own ego and self. Like the two arms ships that Blue and Yellow posess, they are her adjudicators and enactors of White's will. I'd love to hear others ideas on how I could be wrong or expansions on this concept though. And as always, be excellent to each other!

I imagine free will and free thinking is beneficial for when you're colonizing and have to maybe change things up or even developing new technology. There's really only so much a person can think to code in command wise so it limits a program's ability and adaptability. Free will and free thought has much more benefits ans flexible when it comes to the variable of outcomes gems can enter into in the universe than limited commands.
It would be interesting if White Diamonds court had the same voice as White Diamond and would fit in her being the perfect gem. I think she embodies Unity
if you put the corruption in reverse: Yellow effects the body, Blue effects the mind/soul, and Pink effects the heart. So white is the one needed to keep it permanent. So she could be the reason that the body of a gem can be scarred or corrupted. This makes even more sense with the fact that White's power looks like the power of a star or light. And since a gem's physical form is made of light White can change the light to cause scarring or permanent changes like corruption. or if you put it into a simpler text, make what the diamonds did to try and reverse and cause corruption to stay that way. {:EDIT:} the reason I put them in those categories is that centipeedle still had a heart. But just had to be reminded. If pink diamond was part of the all out attack then the heart would be effected causing shattering which is what the diamonds tried to accomplish.

I think white Diamond was the first who then created lesser gems to maybe ease her loneliness. There was no reason for them to be so ridged and similar because at the time they were only meant to keep her company. She probably got bored of that which eventually lead to where we are today
I think that The Diamonds want their gems to think they have a choice when they really don't. In order to keep their gems "happy" and to avoid unneeded questions, they make them think that their opinions are valid and important to them when they're really not.
For menial, everyday tasks, free will isn't helpful. That's why White Diamond's pearl doesn't have any. However, in more complicated tasks with more variables, options, and obstacles, it can be difficult to 'program' for everything. We don't have self driving cars yet because of this. Free will allows spur of the moment decisions and actions which can be vital on, for example, the battlefield. However, some gems have more free thinking than others, and this may be either by design or by propaganda. For example, in Hit The Diamond, The rubies didn't question having to "play baseball". They went along with it, despite the fact that they easily would've been able to overpower a few humans. They also went straight to neptune when the gems said that's where jasper was, without questioning why or how jasper would be on neptune. We see this with Peridot also, when she was first working with the crystal gems. I forget the episode, but there was a time when Garnet tied her to a fence. Instead of just turning around and untying herself, she just worked within her radius as best she could. Peridot obviously has free will, but she hadn't learned how to really think for herself outside of specific situations she was designed for. It seems like various levels of gems have more or less free will/thought depending on the task they're built for and the needs of that particular task.

If White Diamond is as old and powerful as we think, it would make sense for her to include free will into her creations. When you think of her creations as toys, as a way to pass her time and entertain her, it would get boring pretty fast to play with 'soulless' toys. It would be much more entertaining to give those toy free will, a 'soul', so they can act on their own and be surprising, more entertaining, more interesting. Of course every smart creator (and I bet White Diamond is one) would include a method to take this free will away again, in case something goes wrong. If White Diamond really wanted to stop the gem war on earth, she easily could've ended it. But she didn't. It was probably the most fun she had in millennia. When you can call being mildly entrained 'fun' that is.

Another thing about white dimonds pearl caught my eye. Aside from having a scar over her eye, her gemstone is placed on her belly button. Yellow and Blue both have a pearl with the same gemstone placement as them but White's pearl has her gemstone on her navel, much like Pink dimond's and Pink's pearl (our pearl) has her gemstone on her forhead. Considering that the other two dimonds have their pearls' gemstones in the same place their dimond is, wouldn't it make sense for the same to apply to White and Pink's pearls.
Then I remembered something from the episode when pearl tells us the entire pink dimond scandal. Pearl said that she was given to pink dimond. So... maybe our pearl was originally White's pearl, and she was given to Pink dimond in exchange for Pink's original pearl.
Going by the theory that all pearls reflect the same personality traits as their dimond, you can infer that Pink dimonds pearl acted the same way Pink dimond did. Maybe White dimond saw this, and decided to give Pink a better pearl that would keep her more on task, considering that Pink's original pearl was child-like and a bit selfish, just like Pink dimond.
Once the pearl-trade was done White was left with Pink's pearl who she corrupted or somehow brain-washed. This would explain why White's pearl has a scar.
But I guess that's just a theory. Lol sorry if I pointed out the obvious.

Hey, Slice! It’s funny you should mention free will in relation to White Diamond, because about a year ago I made a comment on Swaggy’s video about White Diamond’s role in corruption, and originally theorized that perhaps White held control over all of Homeworld through her mind powers. I let go of that theory after some time, but now I think it holds some bearing after what we saw in the last episode, even if it only really applies to White Pearl. Here’s the comment:
“Last week, I was thinking about the theory you mentioned about how each of the Diamonds (Yellow, Blue, and White) could've contributed individual attributes to corruption through their song. You mentioned Yellow being able to alter gems' physical forms, and Blue being able to manipulate gems' mental/emotional states. I was brainstorming, trying to figure out White's part. Then, the thought occurred to me-Pearl is another forehead gem. She can project different images from her gem, including copies of herself. This is actually not unlike how all gems project their physical forms from their gemstones (keep this in mind for later), except that Pearl can project additional holograms. Then, another thought occurred to me-what if White Diamond does the same thing? What if, somehow, her unique ability as a Diamond involves projection, and this somehow ties into corruption?
I eventually came up with this:
Blue Diamond is responsible for sending the emotions of the gems into disarray. Corrupted gems cannot make sense of their feelings, and cannot deal with them in a thoughtful, structured manner. This lack of control makes them fearful, and the only way they know how to cope is to act aggressively; they become like animals.
Yellow Diamond destabilizes the physical form, making it vulnerable to dramatic changes in the gem's psyche. As we've seen from regeneration, gems can choose to make changes to their new forms, to a certain extent. Yellow essentially renders the body unstable, making it prone to changing its form against the gem's will, and outside of regeneration.
White Diamond, perhaps most importantly, destroys the mind of the gem, which is responsible for projecting its form into the world. More specifically, the gem's _self-perception_, or ego, becomes severely damaged, resulting in an equally-damaged outward projection. Because the gem has lost its sense of self, the door is opened for Blue to manipulate the emotions of the gem, resulting in a loss of control and self-regulation. And, because of Yellow's weakening of the body, White can now project the monstrous condition of the gem's mind into its form, robbing it of its more "human" physical capabilities. The voice box in the physical form and the language center inside the gemstone are both deformed beyond recognition, so the gem can't even speak.
My original idea was that, perhaps, White Diamond controls the gems on Homeworld, basically projecting herself into their minds. In fact, that she did so while immobilized in a secluded location, which would explain why we haven't yet seen her. I thought that, while this was an interesting theory, it was a bit far-fetched. But then, I saw The Roundtable's video on his theory that White Diamond is actually the Homeworld planet itself, and was floored by how similar his and my theories were.
His is that, while White herself is the planet, she is capable of projecting her own physical form so she can communicate with others-just like my hypothesis that White mirrors Pearl in her ability to project holograms of herself! It's slightly different from my idea in that she instead projects her will onto the other gems in order to control them, but I like his theory more. It also lines up with my idea that White for some reason doesn't move, is away from the other gems, and doesn't speak to them directly as a result. To put icing on the cake, I also hypothesized that White is "sleeping", yet somehow conscious-a lot like one might expect a planet to be!
If both his and (most of) my theory are correct, they are strong evidence towards White's role in corruption being damaging the mind of a gem, and as a natural result, distorting its physical projection. I really want to know what you think of this theory, because I'm really excited about it!”

I have crazy suggestion that came after watching AJ Universe's video "Steven Universe Theory - White Diamond's Sinister History" he suggest that Pink use to be the main Diamond and Leader of gem kind and in all honestly the amount of detail that goes to all types of gems from their looks, their personalities and abilities does fit more to be Pink's design and not White's.
Consider this gems even though they are made for specific jobs they still have passions, skills and minds that can crave more. Look at Bismuth after Stars knows how long of doing same job she felt need for a change - meaning she wasn't satisfied with lack of variety in her life. ta the same time CG kinda kept same roles for their members but Rose allowed them evolve beyond purpose they were made for.
With similarities between CG ((mainly post war)) and Diamonds there is similar feeling of...lack of progression after 'Death' of leader and doing things how that leader wanted to and perhaps like CG in first seasons Diamonds are more focused on keeping legacy left in their hands alive and the same. Even if not necessarily in ways Rose /PD wanted it to be kept alive. It became set in stone, unchanged and unchallenged because those who remained didn't knew where to take that legacy.
Let me give more of example here ask yourselves: for how long Garnets as leader was playing things safe? How long they were doing things Rose's way? Even in kinder garden Kid episode garnet stated that they are bubbling corrupted gems to spare them suffering because 'that's what Rose wanted". Not to mention looking for corrupted gems and bubbling them was how CG were operating for millennia under Rose's lead. Nobody ever challenged those ways until Steven. Every risk and change of approach came to be because of him. As Rose's son ((and reincarnation in the way)) he was the one to put things into motion and bring back progress for CG even thought he is the youngest and with the least experience. Even when he didn't knew much about anything of gem things even as a goofball he was one to bring back life to Rose's legacy and make it blossom and evolve again. If we replace CG from early days with diamonds and Steven from beginning of the show with Pink...a lot of things look similar.
Dynamics of the group, that Steven had to prove himself worthy CG like Pink tried to prove her worth as Diamond to be respected and taken seriously by those lose to them? To Pink/Steven not being ready to handle responsibilities CG/Diamonds had.. Even down to not being taken seriously even if they had valuable things to say they weren't heard out with seriousness they were being humored instead. Steven with Peridot's bots in stream between Warp Pads and Pink with how precious of Earth and life on it are.
Everything seems to be happening in cycle with SU...Pink's life and 'rebirth' as a new person/gem and group dynamics with CG and Diamonds..
Holy smokes, no one else has asked the deep philosophical questions after the latest episode. It's always been "why has this character done this and that? What does their design possibly mean? And what will happen next?", but NOBODY has picked up the topic of free will in gems and then here comes Slice, doing THAT. Asking the big questions! I love it!!!
Maybe they have free will because they were originally built as such from a past leader? White diamond would never install free will given her character; just throwing it out here but if Pink Diamond was originally the leader of homeworld It would make sense. Free will is something no one can take away. If you switch the diamond insignia and place pink on the top, flipping it, and put white on the bottom, it would make the same insignia just with Pink on the top. It's an interesting idea. Also, Pink being an off colour WOULD make sense if she was originally red as if White took away her memories trying to 'cleanse her'. She couldn't exactly completely cleanse her giving her color not white, not red, but pink. As they were cleansing her this could affect her personality making them childlike. (and height we don't know yet)

I don't think that they'd consider it free will... I think to the gems, they'd consider it like innovation. And innovation can lead to imagination which can lead to abstract thought. Take our Pearl for example: she was simply following Pink's orders (when Pink asked her to imagine what it would be like to be down with the quartz soldiers) which lead to her innovative way of having Pink shapeshift into a quartz. From that, she got encouragement from Pink to continue her way of thinking which lead to Pearl imagining things that hadn't been asked of her, which can be taken as "free will". A gem needs this built in mechanism to be able to adapt in different planetary situations/environments.
You know I’ve never really thought of that. Perhaps they can think freely due to different reasons regarding each gem’s rank and purpose. I can see tacticians having free will so they can think of invasion and battle strategies. I imagine advisors having free will so they can offer suggestions to the diamonds on how to better their empire. Pearls possibly having free will so they can use their imagination to find new ways to entertain the diamonds whenever the diamonds can’t think of ways themselves or are too much in a rut to do so. Even soldiers probably have free will because if they didn’t, the diamonds would probably command them to fight an army but not know if those soldiers are losing because the diamonds are too busy doing other important business while there’s no soldier to stop fighting, come up to them, and tell them that the enemy has the upper hand. Gems with no free will would paradoxically be less effective in some regards, as they are limited to the thoughts, ideas, and imaginations of just four diamonds. If those four diamonds couldn’t think of a plan, there wouldn’t be anyone to give them input, as everybody else would just be puppets each diamond controls or commands. Additionally, while gems with no free will might be efficient in some regards, having all of your subjects just be either puppets you control all day or characters whose actions you code, makes it less worthy to have said subjects than to have subjects who have opinions and their opinion is that they legitimately fear you, as opposed to you just talking to yourself via sock puppet and having the sock puppet say they fear you.
Am I making sense? This made sense in my mind but reading this makes it seem like a mess of vague words. I’m hoping this gave at least some people a little insight on my thoughts.

We all assume that every gem has free will, but we have only seen gems from three out of four courts that compose Homeworld: Pink, Yellow and Blue. I don't think White Pearl's condition is exclusive to her, but rather all of White Diamond's gems have been brainwashed by her. Maybe every gem we've seen so far has feelings because Pink, Yellow and Blue have feelings themselves, so they would have wanted their gems to be the same. That would not be the case with White, though.
Free will is needed for the initiative - Be it technological advancement, strategic thinking or adaptation to a changing environment (colonization). If the gems had no free will and work only on orders the very few "thinking" gems would have to give out every single order directly and each time a new problem would show up. That would be VERY time consuming.

I watched one of your videos from last year talking about morganite, and I think we're going to meet that gem in the Steven universe movie. Even the thumb nail, morganites hair is the same as one of the characters in the Steven universe trailer when the heart was spinning. But when they showed her character on the spinning heart on the trailer, the heart was upside down, so that means she might be the villain.
I have a huge break! Pink diamond is the robotic legs, yellow & blue are the arms, and white it the upper body and head! It makes a full robot. Just like the arrangement of their gems big triangle. And maybe "obsidian" has something to do with that robot together.

Well mostly because they can think. If quartz couldn't think, they wouldn't be able to interpret their orders. Gems that make things need to think through the process in order to build whatever they are building. Most jobs gems have require brains/thoughts. And with those things comes a personality commonsense and free will. The diamonds are persuading gems that they have no free will. And it works, most of the time. Gem destabilizers are needed in case something happens that causes the gem to accually think though what is going on. Or if someone explains the truth then the gems uses commonsense to see what side they are on... Or the brainwashing/persuasion worked so well, the gem still beilives homeworld's side.
Gems' physical Appearance are Hard Light projections. Which is why they can "shapeshift" and easily change base forms upon reformation.
Being that White Pearl's gem doesn't look Broken, that Means at the Very least that White Diamond Told her (if Not Forced her) to Look the way she does.

It’s not only free will but free thinkers that home world needs. It’s need to have gems that are able to think for themselves if there is an absence of an order. For example general maintenance of home world buildings would have to be conducted by free thinking gems as each building would have a unique maintenance issue that would have to be addressed. There is no way that any type of leader could predict the countless possibilities of this scenario

Hey, I was hoping you could make at theory video about weapons. You see, it occurred to me that if Rose Quartz is Pink Diamond, why is it that she's the only diamond we've seen having a weapon, being her shield. Is it possible the OTHER diamonds also have weapons, if so, what would they be? Of course the counter the theory would be her development in general, being that, she is smaller and "still a child".
Before I clicked on this video, I've been seeing people theorizing that White Diamond knew about Pink's plan and about the Gem War before it even happened and Pink coming to Homeworld even though it was Steven who went to Homeworld but due to how White reacted to Steven, it creepy to say that White knew things were gonna go this way so she prepared herself for it
theres some philosophical thing behind free will, although i forgot what term it's called. it's more like it's not exactly free will if the choices you have are limited; if you really had free will, you would have been lost, unsure what to do in a sea of "opportunities". so in a way, i think the "free will" in this scenario is a subtle way to get gems to not immediately question anything and follow orders. as stripping a gem of their free will wouldn't lead to technological advancements; they'd keep having to ask the diamonds how to do this, how to do that.
Like you said, emotions such as pride and sistership are useful and can be manipulated. We've seen this through Blue Diamond's powers. Extreme sadness can debilitate. I imagine Blue can harness more than just sadness however, she wasn't always an emotional wreck.
SliceofOtaku , do you remember Connie and Steven in Open Book? We saw a Connie that Steven creates with a white dress, an eye patch on the LEFT eye and poms in her hair. I distinctly watched that episode again for the foreshadowing of white's pearl. It scares me to think of white pearl's personality beyond the mind control.

If White diamond had control over every gem I believe the damage of Homeworld caused her to focus her power to holding the planet together. White left a mark on the gems making them think that free thinking is wrong due to years of not having it
I think 'free will' arose in gems not necessarily because "free will" itself is good, but a flipside view of--because being able to adapt to new problems/situations and problem solve around them are valuable characteristics to have. The impression of White Pearl is very robotic, and White Diamond herself felt very...scripted, but if taken to the extreme and EVERY gem made was made to behave as robotic, then gemkind might've eventually encountered problems that their 'programming' or brute-forcing would not be able to solve. By including openness to their programming, gems aren't hard-coded the answers, they're able to *learn*, and being able to learn can lead to decisions and discretion needing to be made. Imagine how inefficient it would be if White Diamond had to micromanage the orders of every single gem. Maybe once upon a time she had to do that, but surely past a gem-count threshold, White Diamond would've had to admit micromanaging an entire civilization is quite time consuming.
So what I'm saying is basically....White Diamond made middle managers.

I think that gems were given free will so that they may think for themselves and see other ways that they can solve problems if their leader or commander is out of communion. This was a nice theory to look into.
theory: maybe when pink diamond was “shattered” they revived white pearl. pink diamond seems to somehow heal the mind kind of shown in nephorites healing, yellow and blue heal the physical form and pink diamond does with the mind, maybe white diamond is just the seal to it all?
Steven Universe has yet again delivered, I must confess I was starting to be skeptical but the crewniverse has outdone itself and wait I'm not sure if anyone else thinks so but it looks like the diamonds will inevitably fuse especially after looking at the fact that each of the of the diamond ships seem to be dividends of a body(white diamond's being the one Steven and pearl got into), maybe it is some sort of foreshadowing though who knows these days.
sliceofotaku: how about this for another enemy faction in steven universe: a confederation of the remnant people from worlds terra formed by the gem race: thus would wish the extinction of all gem kind, regardless if they deserve it or not.

i think free will is somethings gems have s a "design flaw" that came with sentience. And i do think that WD could take it like she did with white pearl, but the process damages the gem, that could be why she cant move her limbs.or WD has to directly control the gems she takes the freewill of, like puppets and her stredged out arms connect to diffrent gems she is controlling all over homeworld. Maybe she has spend the eons she spend on homeworld perfecting the controll and making it the new threat for the CG as they embrace freedome.
Free will has to be an integral part of a gem so they can carry out orders in a sensible and efficient way, they are just being stopped from developing or advancing with what they can do because there is a set rule or standard that will result in the shattering of said gem I believe. They live in fear basically

Free will allow Gems to be free agents. They can continue to complete their objective on their own without supervision even exceeding it.
Peridot is a perfect example. Her mission was to watch over the Cluster. But when she was trapped on Earth when she hid for weeks and even almost killed Garnet and Pearl. She kidnapped Steven. She even contacted Homeworld. This is something a mindless drone could not do.
She finds it entertaining is my guess. She is amused by it and wants to see how far it can go. Which is probably why she was not so shocked that Pink was alive or shocked about Steven. A frightening thing to consider is what if she already knows Steven is not Pink but her son? All the other gems seemed to be confused by Rose/Pink's choice of form but White did not blinked or bat an eye at it. Like she already knew what Steven was. That is the scary thing to me at least and if she does know what he is then what does that tell for the future of Steven.

I think the freewill aspect is for gems to be able to fight better. They need some creativity to win in fights, also that it's easier to have others do the planning than just a diamond doing it all for 1 race. White Diamond probably just nudges gems minds and their thoughts in the direction she wants. Get them to do what she wants, but let them still be able to think creatively

Oof your questions at the end of the video reminds me of my A.P Literature class and the question my teacher asked one day: What is Morality? Is it Real? This goes along the lines of 'free will v. fate'. Is it fate for these gems for have free will or is it their free will to take a different path in their fate ( like, instead of working with Yellow Diamond like fate had for Peridot, she went against that fate with her own free will to choose her own fate). It's a tricky question
(Just fyi, my class decided that morality is just a social construct to keep people in line with rules made up to inhibit deviant behavior.... It was a trippy conversation)
I'm glad I'm not the only one to think this! If the Gem society wanted to be the most "efficient" society with no rebellion what so ever, the idea of Gems having free will doesn't fit Homeworld's standards. This is why I think White Diamond doesn't care, accounts for it and uses her mind to out-smart or break gems, or was never always in power.
If Gems are almost constantly in this state of military expansion my guess would be that they keep free will so that they be able to learn, adapt and change to counter ever changing enemy forces.
There's also a chance that if White did create Gems that she wanted them to have personality because the idea of ruling mindless drones was unappealing to someone prideful.
My favorite theory though is that Gems are basically Galatea. They were created by some being that wanted to make a powerful, beautiful race to be his legacy but either he died or the Gems didn't meet his crazy high standard and were cast out. Having no direction they began mindlessly expanding because that was the masters last order. Fanfiction over.
Probably because a mindless drone does not have a contingency plan for every possible outcome -- that would be impossible to program into a computer of any sort. Free will is required for a Gem to properly deal with any possible situation; a mindless drone would often get stuck on planets that Homeworld is unfamiliar with.
These are some interesting thought regarding why (if White Diamond does possess mind control abilities) free will exist. In tightly controlled societies, uniformity is a must and individualism is shunned. However, without some form of free will or free thought, there is very little innovation. Is it possible that free will and free thought (to an extend is kept) so the Gem Species doesn't become stale and continue in advancing. One could argue that there are specific gems that are designed to come up with such innovations, but it takes many points of view to come up with useful and much needed inventions and designs. Also if the Gem Species itself is Warlike (we don't know that for sure, but they are a conquering species) a bit of free will in the battle free can be a good thing. Free thinking Gems would be able to make strategic maneuvers without the guidance of a commander (in no communications were available.
I have a theory that white diamond can control gems by asking them to do something. For example, white could say to garnet, "unfuse." And after some mental struggles, she would do it. It would be kind of creepy if white diamond gave steven the crystal gems as unwilling servants to him. Also everything would come full circle, because now Steven would have to plot secretly with pearl, because she was given to him. It would be just like pink and pearl secretly planning.
White Diamond probably included free-will in gems programming simpky because worship and admiration doesnt feel as good when its preprogrammed vs when someone comes to their independant conclusion to give it to you of their own will

I find free will in gems to be a side effect of their capacity for interpretation of orders and rationale. They would need someone to reprogram and command them with every new task given otherwise. Also I'm nearly positive that the gem species is one based off of artificial intelligences that were designed as servants to a creator race. Therefore it is also a side-effect of their origin.
How could a gem such as White Diamond be born naturally? She is the most potent thing in all of Steven Universe, and as a result of no mere chance I'd say. The fact that gems can be used to power technology is also no mere chance. I expect us to find a single supercomputer, broken and left in pieces as a reminder of White's supreme power and will. The same way that White Pearl is left broken and robotic, only acting EXACTLY as White wishes.
It seems to me that gems had White as a propagator, finding her own will needing an extention to protect her own ego and self. Like the two arms ships that Blue and Yellow posess, they are her adjudicators and enactors of White's will.
I'd love to hear others ideas on how I could be wrong or expansions on this concept though. And as always, be excellent to each other!

Second, there are a TON of "God complex" issues(Diamonds) and views on relationships(fusion) in Steven Universe. That said, I feel that free will is just apart of Gems as is with humans and many others,.... or she's toying with everyone else, BUT that's not definite until proven so.... just waiting till the airdate to find out. ... what if WD was like Pink in the beginning? Bright, curious, strong. But with the star thing, she has a bit of Rosalina in her; she relates with stars, bright and old, brilliant. But she was lonely. With her sociopathic tendencies, she lost all empathy with life ‘lower’ than her. She used life to make life. To make a family.
I imagine free will and free thinking is beneficial for when you're colonizing and have to maybe change things up or even developing new technology. There's really only so much a person can think to code in command wise so it limits a program's ability and adaptability. Free will and free thought has much more benefits ans flexible when it comes to the variable of outcomes gems can enter into in the universe than limited commands.
It would be interesting if White Diamonds court had the same voice as White Diamond and would fit in her being the perfect gem. I think she embodies Unity
if you put the corruption in reverse: Yellow effects the body, Blue effects the mind/soul, and Pink effects the heart. So white is the one needed to keep it permanent. So she could be the reason that the body of a gem can be scarred or corrupted. This makes even more sense with the fact that White's power looks like the power of a star or light. And since a gem's physical form is made of light White can change the light to cause scarring or permanent changes like corruption. or if you put it into a simpler text, make what the diamonds did to try and reverse and cause corruption to stay that way. {:EDIT:} the reason I put them in those categories is that centipeedle still had a heart. But just had to be reminded. If pink diamond was part of the all out attack then the heart would be effected causing shattering which is what the diamonds tried to accomplish.
Maybe White Diamond didn’t create Them as we see diamonds can be shattered so maybe the one who made the diamonds and regular gems died somehow. ( maybe from White Diamond as she is the feared ) and the Creature that created them wanted them to live free enjoy there new life but White Diamond Thought other wise and killed her Or My second reason If there is an Black Diamond Maybe black diamonds and white diamond created life and black diamond died from White diamond as black diamonds wanted them to live free but white wanted to control them
Idk but I just imagine the spongebob movie where plankton mind controls everyone with bucket hats, it's like suddenly the entirety of home world decides to go rogue and white diamonds like nawwwwww and suddenly all gems lose their color and their pupils disappear and they become like mindless robots
I dont think free will was built into them seeing how one of the gems say "we just come out already knowing what we were made for" i think free will is symbolic for the show, as in you always have a choice even if you were made to do something else, iys kinda what the whole show is based on, rose/pink d, pearls rebellion with her, ruby and sapphires desire to be together as garnet, even topazes desire to stay fused, it shows the weight the diamonds have ober all of them, but keeping it out there that hey, we have a choice, but are we willing to make that choice, thats my take on it ^^
I think white Diamond was the first who then created lesser gems to maybe ease her loneliness. There was no reason for them to be so ridged and similar because at the time they were only meant to keep her company. She probably got bored of that which eventually lead to where we are today

I think that The Diamonds want their gems to think they have a choice when they really don't. In order to keep their gems "happy" and to avoid unneeded questions, they make them think that their opinions are valid and important to them when they're really not.
For menial, everyday tasks, free will isn't helpful. That's why White Diamond's pearl doesn't have any. However, in more complicated tasks with more variables, options, and obstacles, it can be difficult to 'program' for everything. We don't have self driving cars yet because of this. Free will allows spur of the moment decisions and actions which can be vital on, for example, the battlefield. However, some gems have more free thinking than others, and this may be either by design or by propaganda. For example, in Hit The Diamond, The rubies didn't question having to "play baseball". They went along with it, despite the fact that they easily would've been able to overpower a few humans. They also went straight to neptune when the gems said that's where jasper was, without questioning why or how jasper would be on neptune.
We see this with Peridot also, when she was first working with the crystal gems. I forget the episode, but there was a time when Garnet tied her to a fence. Instead of just turning around and untying herself, she just worked within her radius as best she could. Peridot obviously has free will, but she hadn't learned how to really think for herself outside of specific situations she was designed for.
It seems like various levels of gems have more or less free will/thought depending on the task they're built for and the needs of that particular task.
