As an E-4 Corporal in a Rapid Deployment Combat Unit 39 years ago, this would have been upfront knowledge, if I were training or if my squad would have been training, case in point, we frequently trained El Salvadore Troops during my time & West Point & ROTC cadets, & would have known traffic that was cycled for training to my responsible training location(s), Congressmen Gaetz should have walked the O-10, 4 Star General in a direction of Q'ing his job functions & responsibilities as the AFRICOM Commander on record 1st, then rolled the dice on specifics. When Q'ing a person let them tell you their responsibilities, now with that being said, The O-10 should have been somewhat prepared with his AO = Area of Operations, as we can see during this Q'ing, the O-10 fell flat on his face, not knowing basic answers put his way, he couldn't even give a basic ballpark #. Shame..

I'm an old Marine from the late 60s and its disturbing to see a 4 star Marine General so woefully Inadequate in his response. It's painful to see but today's lower standards in quality individuals is obviously from the top down even in the Marine Corps. And he is not the only Marine General that's been outed. There's always going to be a few who slip through but guys like this are a true Embarrassment.
I was a 17 year old kid back in 69 and facing the Draft so to give myself some options I found myself in the Marine Corps. Not the brightest or the toughest but I paid my dues, And I never Disrespected or Embarrassed myself or the Marine Corps like this Bought and Paid For General with 4 Stars.
What I find people tend to forget is that Our founding Fathers committed Treason against England. So The African We trained does have American core values.

Having watched four-star flag officers over a 20+ year career, I will tell you that their primary function is to play politics within their service and with Congress. One cannot expect a data-based answer from them unless the knowledgeable staff officer is close at hand to provide said answer (one guess as to how I know this). If Gaetz really wanted to see this Marine's head explode, he should have asked, "what are these core values of which you speak".
They are briefed ahead of time from congress what the questions and topics are going to be discussed.
If anyone has served more than 10 years, they all know when an officer reaches O-6 that they get their frontal lobotomy.

Between the lack of proper leadership, the influx of pointless training (i.e. literally being briefed on what an incel is), and the tendency of the government to screw your compensation every time the wind changes direction, it's not surprising the armed forces are having trouble recruiting.

Look what happened in Mexico. We trained their military and police to use methods against drug cartels that our JSOC forces use against terrorists. Then, an alarming number of Mexican veterans, who were American-trained, became enforcement for the cartels.
Look what happen to Afghanistan. We provided armed to Taliban to resist a Soviet invasion in the 80s.
We train and they use it against us
Mexico was easily foreseeable. Why would you take a job paying pennies as a trained soldier when you know the "private market" is willing to pay your weight in gold? The real key thing to look at with Mexico and their military is how their special forces units STARTED their own cartel. Training the agents of foreign governments doesn't work when the governments are so unstable that the very idea of keeping said individuals employed is impossible. The first step to fighting crime in those countries is to foster a stable paying government, and THEN taking the new loyal agents and training them. Jumping straight to training soldiers is how you get soldiers without a leash....

For several years I trained African military units around the continent, in their perspective countries. We had a saying amongst ourselves, "Sunny today, Coup tomorrow." It happens no matter what type of American morals we try to impose. Just like anywhere in the world, the US military and civilian contractors do a great job in training, advising and equipping partner nations to conduct peacekeeping and anti-terrorism missions. Sometimes issues arise because of programs the State Department forces on the governments of these countries. DEI programs and our morals and principals are forced because financial aid to these countries are usually tied via conditions they be taught and used in the host government. Our status in the world is declining and the State Department is the cancer that is causing most of our problems.

The root of this situation is WHY are taxpayers training other countries people when we could sure use a lot of training back here in the States? I'm confused. Who said that this is what the American people want in the first place? I don't know one American who would sit and have a conversation about how good it is to be spending our money training other countries on our war tactics. Period.
America should not be getting involved on our continent. The people in those coup led countries love the coup leaders because when America or Europe comes into Africa or any country its for minerals or to build a military base. Niger is one of the poorest countries in the world yet America built a 100million dollar base there, France has been taking their Uranium, 1 in 3 homes in France is powered by resources taken from Niger YET Niger has no electricity. America has been ok with this for decades. They talk about democracy but what does that actually mean when they come with ulterior motives. The next move will be their default move of regime change. Africa will continue to remove puppet leaders installed by the West. That's not democracy. The arrogance and condescending attitude of America is what is leading most Africans to look to Russia amd China.
They must partner genuinely with Africa and not bully and seek to put up puppets who destroy Africa for their own selfish ends

I want to vouch for him considering he is a general and a service member...what if he has a metaphorical gun pointed at his head? what if even he doesn't have access to the whole story/plans, what if it's not that he is incompetent, but that to fix the situation would require nothing short of a coup, because we're dealing with some very heavy and secretive elements here that can even keep 4 star generals on a "need to know" basis.

I think we really need to understand that we are a very unique set of people on this side of the hemisphere and we can't help other countries understand how we are by training them to be like us. I think it takes a set of situations in a country to have leaders that are like our founding fathers and then those values passed from generation to generation. Countries need liabilities to slap them in the face before good, sound, freedom loving, un-centralized systems are formed.
