Thanks so much! So I have not personally tried with the T7. However, I know it is the same type of drive as the T5 (msata) so it SHOULD work. If you try it yourself please let me know how it works!
This looks really nice, although if the drive in the Samsung T5 is truly a standard M.2 2230 drive, the only physical incompatibility is the screws to keep the drive laying flat. In the T5, the drive has 2 small screws in the corners. It looked like the motherboard for the Andycine Lunchbox does not have a screw hole for a standard 2230 (center screw). That's a bit of a shame, a nylon locking pin would make for a toolless drive installation. The process to transfer the drive isn't too complicated, but it would be nice to just pick up the M.2 drive directly. That said, there aren't any speed concerns with M.2 drives since they are far faster than the SATA 3 interface that the Lunchbox provides.
I did this with the T5 2TB SSD. The only thing I don't like is how small it is. I'm glad it doesn't overhang, but I still wish it went to the end and filled up the entire allotted space.
I appreciate the kind words and you taking the time to comment! I guess we are all our own worst critics! Plan on doing another one of these soon with the new versions of the Lunchbox that come in difference form factors.
I hope Andycine will make same case but for regular SSD like WD or Samsung Evo 8xx series. I can not find T5 or msata m3 on the market, because it's old technology.
I think they would have a problem with the form factor. It works with the msata drives because they are more of a square shape vs the longer rectangle shape of a regular nvme drive like a Samsung Evo. However I know the newer T7 drives while not compatible with the current Lunchbox, it is the right shape so hopefully they will make a Lunchbox that might work with that.
@@GeraldBertramPhotography i mean regular ssd 2,5” size. It’s same shape as WD and Evo. I’ve got both and did opened it to see what’s inside. Its almost same size as lunchbox, the only problem is matching screw hols to fix it. Samsung t7 is inside single piece. There is another alternative to make caddy smaller, search for “DIY ssd atomos ninja”. People are 3D printing caddy and mount inside ssd.
@@360fullhd Oh! Ok. I love that idea. I hope we can see different kind of drives in this Lunchbox style enclosure. If for no other reason just the build quality. Twice I have stepped accidently on my Lunchbox drive, and I'm not a light dude, and it didn't suffer even a single scratch.
I have the same great looking stuff (T5 in Lunchbox) build and working correctly BUT its showing me the Skippy Frame Kangaroo in the Ninja V when filming 4k30……does this happen to you too? I‘m using the Atomos HDMI cable. Its okay with 1080/60. I now ordered the T7 to check if its faster….
Interesting. I can say I have had zero issues with this setup and no Kangaroos in sight. That being said I HAVE seen Kangaroos when using the Atomos HDMI cable shooting in 4k60fps ProRes RAW with my GH5S. Changed over to my Kondor Blue HDMI cable, as well as my ZILR cable, and the issue went away. You might consider picking up the ZILR 4Kp60 Hyper-Thin High-Speed HDMI Secure Cable since it's only $20 and see how that works first.
so i did this and it's awesome, but i also tried first a samsung T7, which i regret is not compatible. no sata connection inside, just the usb c soldered
The angelbird drivers are harder to remove and I've even picked up some super cheap second hand and are def my go to. I don't mind the caddies, but the lunch boxes will need to be longer. Here lies the issue, when you have any of the addons like the AtomX or Connect, you wont be able to get teh drive out of the unit. I do see they have several options as well as an extension handle, but I'm not sure it's still long enough to get out. Nice to have options though!
Great video. What are you using to reads these drives? I have several master caddies and use a G-Drive Thunderbolt reader , but no way to fit these inside that thing.
So I was using the Atomos dock to hook up the drives to my PC but it ended up failing some time back. When I was researching a replacement I learned that those Atomos docs failed for a LOT of folks. I was told to grab the StarTech SATA to USB Cable off Amazon for $12. I've been using it daily for months now and have had zero issues with it.
@@GeraldBertramPhotography Okay thanks. Yeah I do have a sata to USB, but it's not the fastest thing in the world. I always use my G-Drive Thunderbolt 3 reader. It's like a cartridge though so won't fit these lunch boxes...if I can ever find them that is. None in stock anywhere.
I thought about buying a different naked msata drive to try but just ran out of time. As long as they have good speeds I honestly don't see any reason why you couldn't use another msata drive.
Ok, Are you recording voiceover as you do this or are you adding VO later? I feel like you are adding later which is interesting because you are animating your hands to almost exactly what you’re saying :)
Not that I am aware of. I personally have only done this with the Samsung T5 but I've heard from a couple other folks that have used some generic 1tb mSata drives with success. If you do find out about any larger drives that work with it please let me know!
I know some ssd boards are larger because 1 tb wd blue inside works w atti bear caddy like size your showing but 4tb wd ssd board is larger and wont fit. I know cf express came out 4tb and angelbird makes an adapter low pro but 1600 for that option rn. If i know ill post. Thanks
Just assembled my first one, have another one to do and then I'll have to wait for more drives. Definitely a more cost effective solution than the Angelbird drive. I have one of those. And I don't like the idea of the caddies.
Hi Gerald, I just installed my drive into my ninja. It works flawlessly, however, it doesn’t feel that snugged in. It feels a bit loose even though how hard I tried pushing it in. All the pins/ports are aligned. Does your feel that way? Thx.
Hey Matt! No, my Lunchbox fits in pretty well. However I do know that the drive connector on the Ninja V has a fair amount of play in it, device to device. The one in mine is fairly stiff. A friend I shoot with has one as well however his has quite a bit more play it in. My assumption is that there is some tolerance variance in the drive connectors in the Ninja V monitors. I have also heard from several other shooters about this. Just my 2 cents!
@@GeraldBertramPhotography yes It goes 12bit prores but that was a result by blackmagic speedtest if i remember right, 12 bit prores yes but not 10 bit RAW. I can't find that test, i'll be very happy of you can do because with my D780 i can only use 10bit RAW 4:2:2 and before buy this beautyfull solution i have ti be sure it works as a WD Blue. Exellent video by the way, very helpful to see how to setup It in detail 😁
@@gigohsq Are you talking about the Nikon D780? If so I believe that camera can just output 10bit 422 log footage, not RAW. The data rate for that is going to be lower than 12bit ProRes RAW HQ so the T5 shouldn't have any issues keeping up. Keep in mind doing this conversion here, we are getting rid of the USB C interface controller and using a SATA controller now so you should get speeds that meet or even exceed the throughput of something like the Western Digital Blue.
Ok so riddle me this, HOW in the heck are you able to record ProRes RAW with the GH5s? I have the GH5ii & the GH6 and every time I try it says I am not connected to a device that can do it. So am I missing something?
The last update to the GH5S, about a year ago or so, enabled that specific camera to output ProRes RAW to the Ninja V. Not sure about the GH5II or the GH6 as I've never actually had my hands on those.
Thanks for this video. I installed a Samsung T5 1TB drive in the Lunchbox and it seems to be working great. I love the form factor and low cost. Do you know if this SSD would work with the Lunchbox? SanDisk Ultra 3D NAND 500GB Internal SSD - SATA III 6 Gb/s, 2.5 Inch /7 mm, Up to 560 MB/s - SDSSDH3-500G-G25 I have a couple of these that I installed in Atomos SSD caddies for my Shogun Inferno and they also work with the Ninja V. So, I'm wondering if the SSD can be pulled from the case and installed into the Lunchbox.
Thanks for the comment! Unfortunately that won't work. The drive inside of those are a different form factor. There are some naked eSata drives you can from places like Amazon that I have heard some folks have success with.
Unfortunately not. However AndyCine has now produced some new versions and one in particular will work with a Samsung EVO 950 SSD. Believe it's called the Lunchbox 2. I hope to do a video on it shortly!
Thanks for Your review. I´m using a USB A cable 3.1 Gen 2 to SATA by STARTECH. But there is no connection between the ANDYCINE and my computer (MAC Book Pro 2021). Which cable do You use?
I'm also using a Startech one. This is the model number of the one I am using: USB3S2SAT3CB. However this is on a PC. Maybe the one from Wavelink would work better for you since it's USB C: amzn.to/336QMwD
I forgot to mention that Andycine is actually making a USB C reader for the Lunchbox. I'm waiting for them to send to me so I can't speak to how well it works just yet. I plan on doing a quick review of it once it's available: www.andycine.com/usb-c-reader-for-lunchbox-sata-ssd-p3907845.html
I DID notice the vents! However it's been so long since I've used a full size caddy in it I haven't paid attention if the fans kick in less now. Might have to look into that!
Do you know, or have you received any feedback of this Lunchbox/Samsung T5 combo working with the Ninja V + and supporting the new tier of specs i.e. ProRes Raw 8k 30fps 4k 120fps etc...?
yeh, and now samsung quit making 860 pro, and all you got left is sony and angelbird with their mac prices! and Atomos still using ssd? i just bought the Ninja Ultra, and found this out. Luckily i have a few 860 pro.
I have never tried it however here is what I have heard from some of my viewers: The T7 drive has a pcie protocol like NVME and not mSata like the T5. This tells me that it wouldn't work. Again, I have not personally tried it so I can't confirm this info 100% correct.
@@GeraldBertramPhotography thank you Gerald. I actually opened up the T7 and it is completely different from the T5. The T7 have a different insert port than the T5 which mean it will not be able to connect to the lunch box. 😔 I figured I go ahead and see how it look and hopefully it’ll help someone else who is wondering. Thank you very much for your help.
Gerald, I currently own two Atomos Ninja Inferno monitors. I'm current using the Sony Atom X 500GB Mini-drive for both of the monitors. I would love to extend my record time in the field. My question: Can I use the Lunchbox + the Samsung T5 with the Ninja Infernos. I purchased them when they first released because I knew they would be a game changer for many filmmakers including myself and they have paid for themselves many times over!! They are 7 inch monitors, big, bulky but they help me in so many ways and because much of my work isn't run and gun, they work as good as any record monitor out there! I'll take em to their grave. It also saves me tons of HD space because I can shoot in Pro Res HQ, 422, LT, etc... AND, I don't have to transcode files, doubling the demand on my drive space. So ... Can I use the Lunchbox + the Samsung T5 with the Ninja Infernos? Thanks for any help you can give me ... love the channel
From my understanding the Inferno uses the same 2.5" drive sled as the Ninja V. Now I don't have an Inferno so you would really need to double check that. If it is the same drive sled as the Ninja V, then yes the Lunchbox & T5 combo should work with no problem.
First let me say I have not personally tried a T7 drive. That being said I did talk with the folks at Andycine and they told me that any mSata drive, which the T7 is, should work in this enclosure.
@@GeraldBertramPhotography Okay great. I wonder if we lose any speed from the T7 by running straight msata vs using the T7 housing and board. Not sure if there is some voodoo in the T7 housing and hardware that speeds things up. There is a big difference in speed in the T7 compared to T5 normally, but not sure if that is preserved. If not, then there is no point on spending extra dough on the T7. I do know that both T5 and T7 get MUCH slower once they start to fill up. I suspect the T5 would fail if recording RAW as they approach capacity. The T7 might as well.
@@SheldonCharron That's interesting to hear about them slowing down when they reach capacity. Sounds like something I might try and test out. Is this something specific to mSata drives or do standard SSDs suffer from the same issue? I'm fairly sure it's the exact same mSata interface inside the original casing of both the T5 and T7. The T7 is likely using faster chips on the board if there is a big difference in speed like you said.
@@SheldonCharron SATA 6G is limited to 600 MB/s, so the T7 will be limited by the SATA port of the Ninja. Only by connecting via USB C, the T7 can be maxed out
So I have heard some mixed results on how well this works. Someone said it worked another another person said it didn't. What I can say is due to the interface you won't see an increase in performance in using the T7 over the T5 assuming the T7 would work anyway. My 2 cents is to stick to using the T5.
The Samsung T5 2TB drive works fine. 8K Raw ProRes HQ with no problem. This is a well made, rugged, compact enclosure. It would be great if they would make one for full SATA drives too....Crystal Disk Mark results before with Samsung's Controler: Read Seq: 567 MB/s Write Seq: 358 MB/s...with Andycine Read Seq: 445 MB/s Write Seq: 410 MB/s.
Hey Brett! How many *actual* minutes can you get with the 2TB and the Canon R5 in ProRes RAW HQ? Sometime the estimated are way off on Atomos OSD. Thanks!
Very true! But as I mentioned in the video I didn't want a drive hanging out the side. To be honest it more an aesthetic choice because functionally there is no issue. I just love having my drive tucked away on the back of the Ninja. Plus this Lunchbox is just so incredibly solid. I've literally stepped on it twice and not so much as a scratch.
@@GeraldBertramPhotography That was one detaili was happy with about the Shogun, the SSD with the caddy actually fits snug against the back. Not a loose disaster waiting to happen.
It does look really nice on the Ninja.... but, hear me out... As ugly as the stock sled looks... it protects the HDMI ports on the just in case the camera takes a tumble or something hits the mount (sports, stunts in production, accidental dropping etc) . From the very first time I have seen these field monitors I realized that... and every time I have heard someone say they "didn't like how it hangs over", I've always every time said its to protect the cable ends and the ports.... Maybe I'm overthinking this, or maybe Atomos made a functional design choice!

Is there a difference using a T7 drive in this lunchbox?
I did this with the T5 2TB SSD. The only thing I don't like is how small it is. I'm glad it doesn't overhang, but I still wish it went to the end and filled up the entire allotted space.
There is another good reason for the smaller size: the monitor is not heating up as much, because of free space at the backside.
dude, you are way too hard on yourself. This was a great demonstration on how to do it. Learned a lot. thanks.
I appreciate the kind words and you taking the time to comment! I guess we are all our own worst critics! Plan on doing another one of these soon with the new versions of the Lunchbox that come in difference form factors.

Do you know if this would work with a Samsung T7?
Aight, bought it, tried it, A BREEZE :) Thanks!
Fantastic! Glad it worked out for you!
Hi, Can I use it for my Atomos Ultra with storage taken out from Samsung T7 or with other mSata eg: ORICO mSATA Gbps 3D NAND SSD? Thanks.
Hi. Would any M2 sata work?
Thanks
SATA 6G is limited to 600 MB/s, so the T7 will be limited by the SATA port of the Ninja. Only by connecting via USB C, the T7 can be maxed out
@@knobi3760 So any idea why his T7 is skipping but is T5 isn't?
The T7 is NOT compatable. USB-C controller soldered to the board
so i did this and it's awesome, but i also tried first a samsung T7, which i regret is not compatible. no sata connection inside, just the usb c soldered
Thanks for the info.
Love this video! Really helpful, thank you so much!
Thanks so much for the kind words!
Thanks so much! This is really interesting.. Next week i'm going to buy the S5 and Ninja V .. and I order an WD 1TB for the ninja.. do you try it?
As far as I am aware the only drives that works with this enclosure is the S5 and similar naked mSata drives you can find on places like Amazon.
I would imagine I can use a T7 here as well, right?
Great vid can’t wait to convert mine , thanks again.
Thanks so much! Please let me know how it goes for you!
Awesome video! Question: why shouldn’t a different mSATA drive work? There are newer ones like the T7 which has even higher speeds….
I thought about buying a different naked msata drive to try but just ran out of time. As long as they have good speeds I honestly don't see any reason why you couldn't use another msata drive.
@@GeraldBertramPhotography I might try it. I too can’t see why it shouldn’t work as long as it fits and is fast enough…thanks again!

Nope, so issues with any clipping here!
How many minutes of record time do you get on average with various raw settings?
INTERESTING !Is there a 4 or 8 tb option that has been proven that does 4k 60 prores raw?
Not that I am aware of. I personally have only done this with the Samsung T5 but I've heard from a couple other folks that have used some generic 1tb mSata drives with success. If you do find out about any larger drives that work with it please let me know!
I know some ssd boards are larger because 1 tb wd blue inside works w atti bear caddy like size your showing but 4tb wd ssd board is larger and wont fit. I know cf express came out 4tb and angelbird makes an adapter low pro but 1600 for that option rn. If i know ill post. Thanks
Yup. I have two. About to build a third
thank you! I needed that video!
will the fit a Samsung 512GB 860 PRO?
Just assembled my first one, have another one to do and then I'll have to wait for more drives. Definitely a more cost effective solution than the Angelbird drive. I have one of those. And I don't like the idea of the caddies.
Glad it's working for you! It's been a solid solution for me for some time now.
Hi, i read somewhere that the Samsung T5 can't write 10 bit RAW 4:2:2, is this true?
Nope, not true. In the video I was recording 12bit ProRes RAW HQ.
@@GeraldBertramPhotography very clear and helpful, thank you very much 🙏🏻

Ok so riddle me this, HOW in the heck are you able to record ProRes RAW with the GH5s? I have the GH5ii & the GH6 and every time I try it says I am not connected to a device that can do it. So am I missing something?
The last update to the GH5S, about a year ago or so, enabled that specific camera to output ProRes RAW to the Ninja V. Not sure about the GH5II or the GH6 as I've never actually had my hands on those.
All works fine thanks.
Thanks for this video. I installed a Samsung T5 1TB drive in the Lunchbox and it seems to be working great. I love the form factor and low cost.

SanDisk Ultra 3D NAND 500GB Internal SSD - SATA III 6 Gb/s, 2.5 Inch /7 mm, Up to 560 MB/s - SDSSDH3-500G-G25
I have a couple of these that I installed in Atomos SSD caddies for my Shogun Inferno and they also work with the Ninja V. So, I'm wondering if the SSD can be pulled from the case and installed into the Lunchbox.
Thanks for the comment! Unfortunately that won't work. The drive inside of those are a different form factor. There are some naked eSata drives you can from places like Amazon that I have heard some folks have success with.
it is hard to get the samsung t5 these days. does the samsung t7 work?

Thanks for Your review. I´m using a USB A cable 3.1 Gen 2 to SATA by STARTECH. But there is no connection between the ANDYCINE and my computer (MAC Book Pro 2021). Which cable do You use?

The main thing I notice is now the vents on the rear have access to more air. Do you think the Ninja stays cooler?
I DID notice the vents! However it's been so long since I've used a full size caddy in it I haven't paid attention if the fans kick in less now. Might have to look into that!
Do you know, or have you received any feedback of this Lunchbox/Samsung T5 combo working with the Ninja V + and supporting the new tier of specs i.e. ProRes Raw 8k 30fps 4k 120fps etc...?

Will this work for the Samsung T7 2TB?
I have never tried it however here is what I have heard from some of my viewers: The T7 drive has a pcie protocol like NVME and not mSata like the T5. This tells me that it wouldn't work. Again, I have not personally tried it so I can't confirm this info 100% correct.
@@GeraldBertramPhotography thank you Gerald. I actually opened up the T7 and it is completely different from the T5. from where? I need one asap
Do T7s work?
Only by connecting via USB C, the T7 can be maxed out
@@knobi3760 that’s what I thought: so no point in spending more on the T7
would a t7 Samsung work better than the t5? do you know anyone who uses that set up?
Thanks!
I just grabbed 2 new T5 drives for $70 each. How much is the 2TB mobel? What is the model number so I can get one
Great idea! However, it seems that because of the high demand for the T5 the price went up so high that now it is over $300.00! Too late!
T7 works with this or not anyone tried?
It's cheaper than the Anglebird, but it's still cheaper to go for the 2.5" SSD + Atomos caddy.
@@tomastuoma I hear ya!

I just used one of those basic $20 electronics tool kits and it had everything I needed to do this.
