    I'd go for a 2.0L 8v "AEG" from a Mk4 Golf/Jetta into a Mk1 Golf. Very capable motor, responds well to bolt on's and you can always boost it later on with a supercharger or turbocharger.

    Cost-no-options choices for an early Mk1 (currently on my back burner; a '76) are between a current model 1.8 T and a twin-charge 1.4 from the Euromarket Scirocco. Actual motor plans are to integrate a G-lader onto a 1.8L 16V. Time and budget will tell though…

    Hey Charles great video. I like how you went into all the details of the different type of variety of engine swaps. If I were to go with the engine swap it would definitely be the 3.6 liter 24 valve VR6 engine that's my favorite engine ever! I always liked the sound of the VR6 and the 3.6 liter magnifies it! Do you have any recommendations about this type of swap in a Corrado things to look out for or things not to look out for? All details are highly appreciated thank you!

    Currently in the process of doing a mk1 longitudinal 1.8t swap from an Audi A4. Quattro awd and everything. Not surprised that it isn't on your list considering the amount of fabrication ahead of me in addition to the fact that I don't think many have done such a swap. Curious to hear your thoughts and experience on the 1.8t :)

    I think that was my question from like a month or two ago.... and yes my name's Gregory.... but for me it would be either a m-tdi in a mk1 pickup or a aba/16v(abf clone) running on obd2 aba management with a bbm charger in a awd swapped mk2 jetta. I'm actually currently working on getting parts for both swaps. problem I'm having is finding a awd o2a... all I'm finding is o2o and they won't handle the 350 hp the motors gonna do.

    What are your thoughts on ITBs on a 16v and keeping it running right?
    I have a REALLY CLEAN 84 GTI that I want to keep "period correct" if I ever do a swap so I feel like I'd want to do either a Callaway Turbo Kit or a 16v if I ever decide I want more power.

    I dunno what swaps people are doing these days...but the most interesting swap I ever saw was back in the mid 80s in Australia. It was a classic Mini ('77, I think) with the clubman front sheetmetal...with the engine, transaxle and running gear from a 2.5 Alfa Romeo GTV6. The engine fit very nicely in the front, since the gearbox was in the back (it was converted to RWD to retain the original Alfa layout) - although there wasn't much of a trunk left afterwards. The outside looked pretty stock, other than 13" rims and relatively modest arch flares. Sounded awesome, drove very well - what a sleeper. :-)

    Hey, I like your videos! Maybe if you happen to read this, you could answer me a quick question.
    I've got a '91 Jetta GLI with the 16V 2.0L engine. I had a blast driving it around until it suddenly died on me. I absolutely hate mechanical fuel injection. So it's been sitting for a while as I've been trying to figure out what I want to do with it and save up some money. I've narrowed it down to two options, both of which will require swapping the transmission because I just don't want to rely on the 020 to handle the power I might throw at it.
    My first option is to turbocharge the 16V engine. I love turbos and I'd probably want to make around 350 hp or so, so I would likely be going through the engine, replacing pistons and rods, porting the head, etc, in addition to fabricating a turbo manifold, intercooler and piping, and of course making the car run on EFI. Most likely I'd choose a Megasquirt for this. Seems rather straightforward with 2 major bonuses: I already have the engine, and being a 4-cylinder, replacing parts in multiples of 4 will be cheaper than the other option.
    But, I've always wanted to do an engine swap, and I'd kind of like something a bit fresher and smoother than my 317k-mile 16V engine. Enter the 07K (aka the 2.5L inline 5). I love the way it sounds and there's a decent amount of bolt-on parts that would make for a compelling engine swap, I think. The engines themselves are pretty cheap, and Fabless Manufacturing makes a kit to help drop the engine into the Mk2. I have thought a lot about this option and I've pretty much settled on the fact that if I were to go this route, I'd keep it pretty basic to start, just get the engine running as it is stock, really only needing to fab up an exhaust, and drive it around that way for a while to see how it really drives. I can then add bolt-ons to it and maybe if I really want to, turbocharge it in the future.
    Now here comes the question: for some reason, I thought the earlier 2.5L engines had aluminum blocks. I recently came across a video where Hank from Iroz explained some things about the 07K and he mentioned the earlier ones had iron blocks. But he's also using RS3 engines for a lot of his builds, so I got a little confused. Did the Rabbit/Golf ever get a version of the naturally-aspirated 2.5L engine with an aluminum block? I was kind of bummed when I realized these were iron block engines. I would kind of prefer an aluminum block for this swap since the engine is physically larger and heavier. I know adding a turbo to the 16V would add some weight as well, but I would think it would be far less weight than swapping to an iron block 07K.
    Sorry for the lengthy comment and I appreciate if you happen to read it. Thanks!

    • @HumbleMechanic
      @HumbleMechanic  3 роки тому

      Not sure on the block. I thought all the VW 2.5 were cast iron. But I could easily be wrong there. The 2.5 is becoming a very popular swap. You can get the super cheap. it's about the only cheap VW engine right now. What about a boosted ABA? Or a 1.8t from a MK4?

    • @rars0n
      @rars0n 3 роки тому

      @@HumbleMechanic Thanks for the answer!
      I'll be honest, the 1.8t never really did it for me. They're fine and all, but I've always preferred the sound of the 16V engines. Plus, I feel like if I'm going to build a boosted 4-cylinder, I may as well just use the 16V engine I already have.
      But the 2.5 is a really tempting option. I think I'm just not going to worry about the block and just see how the car feels with a mostly stock 5-cylinder. It's a really light car so I'm sure it would be a lot of fun. Then more go-fast goodies can come later on as necessary.

The plan was to swap the engine with a manual transmission into the truck, along with the engine management, ignition switch, and bypass the security on the Toyota ECM

    off topic to the video but Charles, i just wanted to get your scoop on how VW is doing right now and how diesels have effected your dealership.. our shop, for the most part, is completely dead. techs are making anywhere ranging from only 50-90 hrs per pay period (bi-weekly) when we're usually flagging 90-140 hrs. our sales side has been taking a huge hit as well, went from 100+ car sales to maybe 40-50 mainly being non-vw used units. we actually laid off quite a few employees this past week.. is it like that across the country or only at my dealer? ive been thinking about jumping brands actually. it really sucks because i use to like my job. located in highly populated city in Texas for reference.

      +Potato Skinz we were a little busier the 2 weeks around Christmas. But for the last 10 months we are the same as you.
      I feel exactly like you do now. Thankfully we haven't had to lay anyone off, but it's been really hard. I took a 25% pay cut 2016 over 2015.

      Both can be awesome swaps. I think the 1.8t is a little cheaper. Until turbo upgrades come. Lol

    for a diesel mk1 te best is slap a turbo on the orginal 1.6, 1,6td from golf mk2 and turn the bitch up. or like i've done in my mk1 caddy AAZ 1.9td from golf mk3. every engine with the orginal golf mk1 mounts from mk1 upto mk4 golfs are pretty much drop in. you may need to use a golf mk1 gearbox sometimes to make it fit better but the 02a gearbox fits like a glove and can handle some power. My dream for my caddy would have to be a 2.0L diesel from like a mk5 golf, or maybe a skoda octavia z1 vrs (like I have as a daily now). maybe 4wd or rwd just for fun. Petrol, AEB is the easiest and cheapest. 16v, bulletproof. but vr6 turbo in a car thats 850-1050kg. would be insane.
    I'm not good with wires at all, so my build is going slow atm. have a buildpage on facebook aswell. and waiting for parts. I need a waterpump pully from a vr6 or early 90HP golf mk3 engine to make the belts work, deleted factory powersteering and AC. My old mk1 golf I had a plan for golf mk1 gti bottom end and scirocco H2 top. and weber 32/36. but sold it before I got the chanse (kids).
