I heard “Mural” when it first dropped. To this day, every time I listen to it, I catch a bar I didn’t catch the previous listen. Dude absolutely lost his mind on that song. Hands down, one of the GREATEST hip hop songs of all time.
There is a video of Lupe teaching a class at MIT about rap and it gave me a lot more respect for him. Look it up if you haven't seen it cuz it's pretty interesting imo
Best way I can describe it is, Lupe is the poor man’s intellectual. All of us who were outcasts because we were jocks, or gangsta enough or just a bit introverted and more focused on science and anime. Lupe spoke for us. The ills we witnessed as children and the bleak future encroaching
I love lupe, hes easily my favorite rapper and i always love when people go into how incredible he is. He does things with rap no one even knew was possible, Its the old Beethoven vs Bach argument. Bach wrote music so complex most people who werent his contemporaries didnt find the music appealing to just listen to, there was more to understand before you could get how genius he was, Beethoven wrote simple music that sounded incredible to mosts ears and used musical motifs to reinforce emotion he wanted the audience to feel. Bach had an understanding of music matched by no one but beethoven understood the people who listened to the music and what they wanted to hear. Who would you say is better? I say Bach, but many if not most would say Beethoven, which is fair and probably even has a bit more logical backbone.
FYI there was made a breakdown of Mural done by Dissect Podcast, Spotify exclusive. Among the 8 songs analyzed, the second longest took 1 hour, and Mural took 2 hours and 8 minutes, split into two parts.
If you want a more or less full breakdown of mural ladies and gentlemen then check out the channel times Nu Roman, it's more of a visual explanation more like a picture says a thousands word kinda thing, but most of the images used to describe the bars are pretty on point.
I appreciate Lupe for opening peoples eyes to deep-thinking. He’s one of the rappers where I have play his song a lot of times to figure out his references.
What the hell, I knew every word of Hurt Me Soul for at least 15 years and never figured out that the 3rd verse was listing 24 ills of the world. I swear Yu always get something new from a Lupe track, even if Yu know it and think Yu get it. That's why I been calling him the greatest since a teen. I'm glad he's finally getting the recognition he deserves. This is dope.
He's been one of my favorite rap artists for a while now. The fact that my favorite rapper of all time, Nas said he's the second coming? That's dope af!
Lupe, lyrically, is in my top 5 DOA. And he's probably topping the list ahead of Eminem and Big Pun. The first time I heard the joint "Kick, Push", I was instantly a fan. For the stylish delivery of the bars and the content of the lyrics. Being that I was deep into skater culture, something that was still very rare for black kids at the time. To hear a black artist make a popular song about it fit perfectly into my life. Then I started listening to the rest of his music. And my God, the guy is insanely talented. And proud of the things that makes him unique. So he doesn't rap about drugs and guns, bitches and violence, or money. At least, not how most rappers (then and now) do. The guy was even the best in the world at Street Fighter at one point, meaning his line about "Street Fighter 2" wasn't just something that sounded good on the track. I have respect for all emcees, but Lupe deserves more. The intro shows, his peers understand. Just wish the public did too.
The moment he told the world hes one of Aesop Rocks biggest fans and talks about him so much, it told me everything I needed to know about Lupe. Lupe rules.
No one will top Tetsuo and Youth. Mural and Dots and Lines are two of the most lyrically dense songs EVER. I can't think of anyone else who has achieved that level of lyricism. And he performed Mural on stage by request and didn't miss a single bar. I can't even memorize that song. Arguably the best rapper of all time, period.
It's not that hard to rap Mural. But writing it is just crazy! I write raps myself but I could never think of such intelligent lyrics! For 9 f*cking minutes!
@@kazmaloop loved it. Most videos do tend to get drawn out after a certain amount of time. I absolutely loved this. Was low key, tight when it was winding down to the end

I love you my my guy for putting Lupe's impact in perspective for others to understand who he is better...for me back in 09 lupe changed my life thru art..but food and liquor was released in 06!!🤯...blew me...that means the songs I was hearing in 09 he was working on them in 02-03 put into production by 04 and then released it in 06!!🤯🤯...he's scholar a teacher not a rapper.listening to just 1 of his songs and decoding it is a life lesson to be learned🙏🏾
Thanks for the kind words, glad you enjoyed. Check out some of my other essays for more interesting topics!
I'm always here for Lupe getting his flowers 🙏🏿
Shared your video bro. We should spread the word before it's too late. Lupe is one of the few artists who keep hip hop alive!
how does this man not have at least 100k subs with this type of content?
You don’t know how much this means to me! Really appreciate these words and share, subscribe and support
Thank you for making this video bro!!! Real recognizes Real!!! God bless you!!!
I appreciate that! Thank you!
My top lyricist of all time
Crème de la crème
I just got chills I’m really thinking Lupe Fiasco is the best rapper alive
That’s high praise, thank you for watching!
He is
Nas
I heard “Mural” when it first dropped. To this day, every time I listen to it, I catch a bar I didn’t catch the previous listen. Dude absolutely lost his mind on that song. Hands down, one of the GREATEST hip hop songs of all time.
He performed it on stage word for word by request and didn't miss a single bar. Dude isn't human.
The ills we witnessed as children and the bleak future encroaching
lupe is definitely in my top 3. He is what sparked my love of music and he is the reason I ever picked up a mic.
Top 5 favorite artists. Lyrically, ain't nobody f’n with Lupe fiasco. Give this man his 🌹
Lyrically lupe is the goat.
I only see truth here
Nas
@@Don.M.Lupe reigns over Nas.
Nas GOAT of old school
Lupe GOAT of new school
Lupe fiasco is the Actual deep and complex rapper people think Kendrick is
As a Kendrick fan, I agree.
They're both amazing. Just Lupe's lyrics got lyrics. If that makes sense.
Lupe and Kendrick can both be top tier
so if you ever watched bleach.. lupe is an espada and his base form would be kendrick, when he releases ressurecion he becomes lupe
I LOVE your analogy. Couldn’t have explained it better myself.
dope video good choice in the instrumental in the backround.
Plies ft Akon Hypnotize instrumental if you wanna check it out. Warning there is a huge tone shift in the first 30 seconds
Lupe is top 5-15 in Hip-Hop of all time no doubt. Wherever you place him he's right there..always been
Great great videos yo. Very well made, and very intimate feeling. Documentary like. Awesome job
Thank you very much, I really appreciate it. I think it’s the Hypnotize instrumental haha.
Lupe is my all time fav so to me YEA !😂😂
Great video! I really enjoyed the deep dive into the various perspectives surrounding this genius of an artist.
Yeah it’s one of them ones when it comes to complexity, it’s why I only gave a high level analysis of what I thought was the root meaning of the work.
If you want a more or less full breakdown of mural ladies and gentlemen then check out the channel times Nu Roman, it's more of a visual explanation more like a picture says a thousands word kinda thing, but most of the images used to describe the bars are pretty on point.
That’s correct. I included some of the GOAT Lupe breakdown footage in this video (credited of course)
UA-cam been killing it recently with the video essay recs.
High praise, thank you for watching. Shout out to the almighty algorithm
Forreal. This video was amazing.
He is criminally underrated
Great documentary bro
Give Lupe his damn crown we are ancestors paid for it
He's been one of my favorite rap artists for a while now.
Lupe rules.
Ngimthandani!👏👏👏❤️🎶
I scream it from the roof tops! Great work man!
For 9 f*cking minutes!
oh and this is a excellent video bro. Thanks for this.
Thank you for watching!
My personal favourite lyricist of all time.
This was such a dope piece of content. I really wish it a bit longer.
Nonetheless, incredible work
And here I thought 20 min was pushing it! Thanks for your comment it’s much appreciated
@@kazmaloop loved it.
Most videos do tend to get drawn out after a certain amount of time.
I absolutely loved this. Was low key, tight when it was winding down to the end
Hip-Hop Saved My Life is one of the best Hip-Hop songs ever.
His last album is also a gem that fell under the radar.
Lupe is true hip-hop: poetry, flow, music, spoken word history and culture
I be telling people as an overall rapper he's the best. Hits. Bars. Gems. Street. Backpack. Dude had his career sabotaged.
Lupe music is transcendental. Very life changing music
I don’t even have to finish the video and I’m just here to say YES Lupe is one of the greatest lyricist ever
You got me so hypnotized the way your body rollin' round & round
He’s always been one of those I emulate even when I lacked the capacity to understand him.
Through him I know I’ve always instinctively gravitated towards the real ones.
Hurt Me Soul is also my favorite track of F&L. Might be my favorite Lupe track period honestly
Lupe is lyrical and deep and balances the music being listenable and fun food and liquor and the cool we’re so 🔥🔥
"Go to Harvard to be a Lupe fan"
-Lupe Fiasco
SLR3
That was actually SLR2
Lupe to this day is my favorite rapper and the reason I love hip hop so much
