HVAC actuator replacement on a 2004 GMC envoy SLT with Automatic climate control. After replacing the Blower control module this GMC envoy would only blow air out of the defrost vent, a telltale sign of a faulty Mode door actuator. I show you how to replace an HVAC actuator and Perform an HVAC module recalibration.
Parts:
HVAC actuator (with gear crank):
OEM - ACdelco 1573596 - amzn.to/2H9Ik1O
aftermarket - Dorman 604-110 - amzn.to/2DYAzcS
HVAC actuator (without gear crank):

I thank you for this video, I watched several videos on this subject, yours was the one that I kept going back to. My local Chevrolet dealership charged me $135.00 to check out the problem with my 2003 Chevy Trailblazer, the estimate to replace both the Defrost Actuator and Mode Actuator was $1,080.46. I was able to complete the installation my self for $146.00 buying my Actuators from the NAPA store here. I can't say it was easy for me, since I am 75 years old, but it gave me a great feeling saving the money and learning, I ain't to 0ld to learn.
How did you line up the mode door actuator with the flap door gear? My 2007 Trailblazer shop manual says to center the flap door and center the actuator. The problem is the mode flap door seems to be spring loaded into the closed position. There is no way I can hold the mode flap door in the centered position and install the actuator with one hand. Thank you for any information you may have for installing the mode flap door actuator.
Thanks for the walk through, fixed me up. Ended up replacing that second one, closest to the engine. Now I've got air blowing thru the face vents again.
Thanks man. In the heat of the summer here in Houston , the wife and kids can actually go places now. Was only blowing out of the defrost and floor board. I just took the actuator out and switched it over to the front vents.
I followed your instructions on how to re-program the HVAC system and it worked very well. Thank you. You saved me a lot of money and time.
I know this is an older video, but I want to thank you for your awesome thorough step by step fix on the AC. My 2003 Envoy sat for 2 years. New battery and AC stuck and wipers stayed on. I wish I could just take it to you. Again thanks a bunch
This just saved me a BUNCH of money!!! This was a VERY easy job and the blend door actuator was only $61 from O'Reilly. Thanks, pfun41!
The recalibration worked for me on the second try and I did not have to replace the actuator!! 2008 GMC Envoy. Thank You Very Easy to Follow!
Great video. I unhooked battery cable and sure enough I had air blowing on the floor only, no matter which mode I selected. I re-watched this video and re-calibrated it. It took another off and back on using the key but it fixed it. Thanks for the help and saving me a wad of cash.
Danke Schoen ! : ✌️ :
this video saved me about 1200 dollars. my vehicle was having the same issue. Thanks to you I'm more of a do it yourself kind of guy
This video was extremely helpful especially when he shows you how to tell which actuator is bad. Thank you for being very handy for myself at least
This video saved me a lot of money, headache and time. recalibrated and front vents work fine now.
I replaced both of mine yesterday, I’ll tell you being claustrophobic I almost went crazy replacing them.
Awesome video! Glad you showed the recalibration step by step in addition to actuator removal. Great job on explaining why the part needs to be replaced as well as symptoms. Might be the best explanation of this process on the web yet. Nice!
you tube is great, but the fact skilled fellas take the time to make these great helpful videos is unbelievable. Thank your Sir. the calibration part worked like a charm. Best regards.
I agree. I appreciate All their efforts.. I've learned to fix Sooo many things & save Lots of $$$ doing it Myself.
Changed my battery out over the cold winter and lord and behold…had that clicking noise. Thought it may of been the CD player, because it stopped after a little while. I will try the reset, if not that, I know know how to change out the actuators. Thank You so much….Your video was a great great big help.
Thank you so much i did what you said and my heater started blowing from all my vents i tried some others and they didn't work again thanks 100 times!!
I recently got a new battery. Afterwards, the passenger side blrew hot and the passenger was cold. I needed to recalibrate the actuator. This video was helpful, but it was incomplete. We had to start the engine with the fuse out. Then turn off the engine and replace the fuse. It worked great!
Did you leave the A/C off during the entire process?
i too own a GMC Envoy. I bought used and never had A/C . I heard this clicking after i replace the a/c line and this is when i was lucky to find out the compressor was bad replaced it and now i have this problem. When will this ever end. I have found out the hard way that these Envoy's. have about of small problems and keeps pulling money out of my pocket. And im not even going to get started about the problem because if you got one y o u know. Thanks You-Tube. and thank you for the people who take there time to try and help
Just wanted to say thanks. You just saved us quite a bit of money.
Your video helped out a lot of people including myself. Thank you, Richards Auto and Air
Pfun41
Thank you for the help. It was the resistor that went bad.
Thank you very much, this worked for me.
Thank you very much ended my problem the easy way
Your instructions are very helpful
Thanks for the video! Have a happy 4th! Mine will be cooler now!🎉
Dude you are a life saver by far the best video and the links to the parts was awesome - Thank you
Thanks for the video it's awesome I have an 2004 envoy but it's all manual knobs to switch everything first I couldn't get mine to work on defrost only front dash vents and then suddenly it would only work on 1-4 speed settings and then 1-3 and now none so I think I need to replace blower resistor as well as some actuators but first I will do the resistor and try recalibrating and see if it works if not I know I need actuators thanks for the video
Great detailed information... Thank you...
thank you for this great video
Thanks for the help. Mine only needed the fuse pulled.
Great video...well done!
excellent video. thank you!!
the mechanic want to charge me $500 to fix my problem, my truck was blowing hot air from the driver side vent and cold air from the passenger side vent, I calibrate the way show in this video and my problem when away , Thank you very much for this Amazing Video.
Thank You! Great video.
Awesome video def helped out thank you very much!!!!
The white arm is needed for the 89018675 for the GMC 2003 Envoy so don’t take it off install as the one you’re replacing. Otherwise. your instructions were spot on.
@Mathew Conniff
You might've missed the part at 13:22 where he mentions that one of the other actuators had failed silently. Yours may have failed without generating any noise as well.
Much helpful...I will apply same on my Chevy blazer 2008 4.2l and let's see.
In my case air blowing thru just floor & defrost up on wind shield.
Thank you so much for this video. Thought I needed a new actuator but just needed recalibration. Thanks so much.
Thank man i fix my tb With your help, its Hard to remove the firts one near to the floor.
Excellent,detailed video!!!!!!
Hi! Your videos are really helpful. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. I have a 2004 Buick Rainier. Air is blowing, but not out of the front vents, and there's no clicking, so I was hopeful recalibration would work. I recalibrated by pulling and reinserting fuses 36 and 39, but that didn't work. You mentioned a second method of recalibration, but I think (could be wrong) you didn't share what it was. What is the second method (if you don't mind sharing)? Thank you!
thank you so much! finally a fix. i will be dling this shortly thatclicking sound is HORRIBLE
Thanks for the great video.
My ac only blows on the driver side of my 2002 Bravada. Which actuator needs to be replaced?
good video...thank you
Thank you
I own a 2004 Envoy XL. The blower vents all function except the one which blows into your face.
I went to the back seat & was unable to lift the seat to expose the fuse panel as shown in this video. I did find a fuse panel just under the hood behind the battery. There was nothing in the fuse map as described in the video.
So in the attempt to cause the AC control system to recalibrate, I disconnected the positive side of the battery for 10 seconds then reconnected the battery. I turned the ignition key on as shown in TV he video to recalibrate the AC actuators. I still have the same problem.
There's a failure in one of your actuators. The XL envoy is a longer wheelbase so the seats and fuse boxes are probably different. They usually have rear AC too.
How did you get the plastic duct work out? 04 blazer. It's wrapped around the brake pedal. It's lose but idk how it works its way out. In other videos it just pops right off and is not wrapped around
thank you sir
how did u get the white gear off the mode actuator under the dash cause I just did mine and couldnt get it out cause of the white gear being stuck behind the plate
Good job
I'm not looking forward to this repair but thanks a lot for showing me how
With my 04 trailblazer I had air coming out the defrost and floor only. This was after I replaced the battery. Replaced the actuator that was up the highest and that fixed the problem. With my trailblazer I left the gear on, it meshed up with a corresponding gear inside. This video does a good job showing you what to do, it's not that hard of a job and would take a moderately skilled lay person about a half hour to an hour to do themselves, FYI.
Matt Fish im currently haven that same issue but it wont calibrate
Can you explain further by "won't calibrate"?
Matt Fish yes we tried to calibrate several times, even replaced the mode actuator and the air still wont blow from the vents. It blows every where but the front vents
Perri Oliver did you move the arm gear inside/under the dash to the middle before you put the new one on?
Matt Fish no, my friend put it on n said it went rite on no problem. Once we got everything back together and turned it on we heard a knocking. I was going to exchange the part today and give it another try
Actuator with the white thing, I can't get it back on. Door position is so air comes out of the vents on front, what should the position of the white thing be so they mesh up?
I’ve replaced both actuators. No change, defrost vents only. Any other ideas. Is there a module for the climate control that’s possibly failed??
When the clicking sound happened I thought he started playing Hot For Teacher by Van Halen
How did you actually get the white peice off the new actuator? I don't see a clear way to remove it. Thanks for your help
my envoy blow air on defrost vent, floor vent and side vent only front vent not work please which actuator need To reemplace.
what size sucket did u use to remove actuator bolt off
i have envoy 2005 front vent not work wich actuetor is for reemplace
How can I determine if the floor door actuator isn't working due to a faulty actuator or if the dial on the control mode isn't working? I bought both but would like to only replace the actual problem.
I have problem on GMC ENVOY 2002 its engine have no noise and ac working great but after some days if i turn on my ac then some noise in coming with my engine like tak tak tak but ac working good some machinic told my to replace the compressor but some machine told me this is compressor wire sound so what i do ??
Which one is the one that controls the one for the floor heat
geat video ☝☝☝
i fucking love you. got my AC jumping
When running the calibration process all 3 actuators are supposed to move, found one on mine that wasn’t moving, sounds like the control board in it is dead
I know this is an old video but I have a 2005 GMC Envoy XUV and the heat doesn't blow out the front vents now but it does out of the back vents located behind the arm rest and center console. So Im guessing that the heater core is ok since it blows hot in the back and it's not the blower motor since its working back there so it must be the actuators in the dashboard? Im just trying to narrow down the issue before I take it to the shop. Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
I believe there is a separate blower control for the rear which means there's a separate blower for rear heat. If the blower doesn't work at all in the front it's likely a blower issue, if it works but not on heat it's likely a blend door.
Hi - how many actuators does the Envoy have? I hear lots of clicking and no air comes out of ANY vents including feet, face or defrost......How many actuators do I need to buy if I want to replace all of them? thanks Nicole
Good afternoon. My husband and I have a 2003 GMC Envoy XL which we put our truck in the shop to fix the driver side of the truck because no hot air was blowing out only cold. Once we put the truck into the shop we received the truck back with the driver side working but now the passenger side doesn't blow hot air. In Sutton to the back send to either not work or blowing very low. My husband and I are going to try the methods mentioned in this video and let you know if it works. However, we do not hear any clicking noise. I will post another comment to let you know the results.
Thank you for sharing. 😊
I do have a question about a noise coming from under the hood either when you start the truck or when the truck is in park. It used to be quiet once in neutral but at times it starts to be noticeable. Are you familiar with this issue and have a solution or video to show the problem and how to repair?
OK so my 2003 Envoy XL SLE Kept defaulting to defrost ducts. When I got in there and looked at the actuator, there were 2, 1 closer to engine, the other closer to center consol. For me it was the second one closer to consol that kept flipping back to defrost ducts. I removed it and manual flipped the doors to dash panel ducts. To my surprise everything works as it should. Switch knob to defrost ducts and it sends the air that way, switch back to front panel that works to. Rear hvac control.. all seem to work as they should....WTF that second actuator is doing is beyond me. My only concern was that the control doors might flip back to the defrost send without the actuator in place to hold it. I decided to take the actuator apart manual turn it so the gear lined up to hold it in the front panel position, I re installed it and did not plug the power in to it....all is working fine
how to recalibrate the actuator and how to know we take the right one?
How do I know which one? I have clicking in the dash. And it completely stops air or heat from coming out. Heat itself is hot but won't come out. Also it randomly turns on and off
hi,
is there a chance by removing the old actuator breaking the shift? was it difficult to turn the shaft to line up the new actuator?
The shaft for the blend door should move pretty easily.
This may be ignorance on my part, so I apologize in advance. There are 4 AC Actuators on the 04 Envoy...are all of them the same part number that can be used in different locations, or, are they 4 individual part numbers?
Are they both the same part number?
I had to unplug battery to replace the water pump, put it all back together and my 05 envoy had this issue of not blowing out front vents only dash and floor (back air works fine). Tried these steps to reset for calibration, didn't fix the problem.. I heard it calibratingand waited 2 minutes of so... still having the issue :(.
Did the exact same thing. Did you find out what it was?
loved your video, very helpful but I'm stuck... I have removed all the lower panels & can see the actuators but can not get to them do to the gas pedal being in the way and the plastic vent is behind the pedal instead of in front like the one in your video, any tips? (my truck is a 2004 GMC Envoy XL SLT)
The XLs might be a bit different. If you can't get around it I wouldn't hesitate to remove the gas pedal. This platform is drive by wire so one connector and a few bolts and you should have all the space you need.
pfun41 I'll try it today, thanks
ok so which one is the one for the door acuator for the front vent the one in the back that u pulled out first or the one that is right in front of it cause my a/c won't blow out of the front vent only the defrost
+Eugene Ballard The one in the middle or front in the video.
Very helpful video, looks very simliar to my 2002 Trailblazer. But one thing I don't understand is why do you need to calibrate it before taking it off?
Sometimes the system just needs to be recalibrated, so you perform the calibration before replacing anything to see if that fixes it.
Your Video was a huge help. Replaced and working good. Thank you very much.!!
I disconnected the battery to replace coils and spark plugs and after that my front vents won’t blow. When I try to recalibrate I will pull the fuse for 10 seconds and turn the ignition on (but not engine) and it will suddenly go black on the dash and shut down. it will lock my key in where I can’t get it out until I disconnect my battery. Only then can I get my key back and the ignition to come back on. Any ideas on what’s going on?
Sounds like you pulled the wrong fuse and the car isn't happy about it.
pfun41 I don’t think anything I do makes my car happy.
mine goes from floor/defrost, to defrost, to floor, just no dash vents... help
Thank you!
Mine clicks when you turn it on or off, and if you put it on heat. It doesn't click when on AC, and I have air blowing out of all vents. Which one would that be?
Also, I bought this car (04 Envoy by the way) used, and the roof blower vents have never worked. What can I do to fix those?
Thank you so much for your videos!
You must have an envoy XL to have roof blower vents, those wold be fed from the rear HVAC unit. That would be blend door actuator.
Great video, do you know which activator would cause Passenger side to always blow hot and driver side vary with controls. Did have clicking before but it still worked properly but now it stopped and heat always comes out passenger, so I assume it finally failed. Also has rear AC/Heat but only get cold air out top vents even when on heat.
Passenger blend door actuator.
Is this located just to the left of the glove box opening and on the center console wall. Can't find another one on the passenger side. was told it is just in 'front' of the blower motor but can't find it (unless it is under some plastic cowling?).
I believe that's it.
what happen if you don't hear no noise from the actuator but air go"s every wear but the front vents ?
That's an odd one but sounds like there's a dead spot in the actuators feedback sensor (it's broken).
pfun41 where is the actuator feedback sensor
Same problem guys no noise but no air out of the face vents
Just like the first section of the video said. I only had defroster air flow, nothing from the front. I had recently replaced the battery. Pulling that fuse and letting the system reset did the trick. THANK YOU!
Same issue am having with my 05 trailblazer , just replaced the blower resistor , no no air out the front vents , tried the fuse reset but nothing and am not hearing any noise from the actuator . Any advise ?
Ok so both defrost door actuator and the one in front of that are IDENTICAL parts? Should I just order 2?
I was wondering the same??
Question
How do you know which actuator is bad I am having hot air coming out from the drivers side and cold on the passenger side and I have it set on cold
Temp door actuator
nice
Do you recall what size socket used to remove the actuator?
I think it was a 5 or something like that. It was small.
What if I don't have clicking but it has all the other symptoms. It was working properly a few days ago then it just stopped switching blowing locations
they can fail without making noise.
Our 2006 envoy only blows cold air from the passengers side. I read that there's 4 actuators. Which one should I replace?
The driver side temp actuator. There are 3 on the driver's side. When you pull off the plastic panels to get to the actuators it will be the one lowest and closest to the driver seat.
pfun41
pfun41 hi I'm wondering what actuator I have to replace I have ac on the passenger side but not driver side what one do I need to replace and where is it located at in your video it does blow on the driver side but only heat even when the ac is on
Thanks for the helpful tutorial. Do you have the part number and approx cost?
+N Taylor Mode actuator: DORMAN 604110
Defrost Actuator: DORMAN 604119
cost varies.
I need to remove the temperature control module. How do ya do that? Can i take off the facing on the dash?
Take off the trim that goes around the gauges and radio. Then it's just a few bolts.
My problem is same make and model is that when im driving the ac wont turn off it just keeps blowing air i can change where the air blows out but i just cant turn it off... what can i do AC stays on when driving and wont turn off.. BUT IT DOES turn off when i shut off the envoy. Pls help
SuperJg31 did you find out because me mines doing the same
You do a good job explaining, but you need to find a stand for your camera, and figure out a system for lighting what you are filming. (maybe an led light strip?) There are way too many sections where I could see nothing.
I being struggling with my blend door actuator on my Chevy cobalt Lt 2009, I took it off but I don't think that that one was the correct, because the new wich is exactly as the one I took doesn't fit, what happened if I just don't put it, what bad can happen???😣🤔
Whatever function it controlled won't work anymore.
@@pfun41 😣😣
Just out of curiosity, would the actuators be in the same location for a manually controlled HVAC setup?
I believe so, I think they just used a manual control module.
pfun41 there is an actual actuator from what i've researched. The only difference between auto and manual controlled HVAC, is the temperature control.
Unfortunately mine had the white part on it and the new one didn't. I installed the white part from the original but for the life of me I can't get it to go in.
My 05 envoy denali, the ac stopped completely. No air from vents, no defrost and no heat blowing. I replaced the blower and it worked for a week and now i have nothing at all. There is a little creaking sound when i push the ac button but still no air flow at all.
If you can hear the blower running the mode actuator probably broke completely or jammed up. If its not running at all then there's an issue with the blower motor or it's associated circuitry. See this video for that. ua-cam.com/video/M4pka5BMoQE/v-deo.html
