I'm really looking forward to seeing how those salt blocks work, we have huge issues with the black horned flies and i haven't found a real good way to keep them at bay yet. I'm sure there would be many other ranchers around here that would look in to these as well if they work.
Hi to Farmer Tyler Ranch and all others too! Great to see you again on that pretty farm. You are a care taker for your lovely family and that pretty farm with those adorable animals that you have brought up from a mighty long way. Everyone Stay Safe . God Bless You.
It's always good to see Buddy. Wonder if his mother knew he was the less promising calf, and that's why she left him behind. At any rate, he looks good, and his size probably makes him easier to deal with.
If you bolt on some wood blocks onto the bottom of old mineral barrels you can use them to put salt blocks in and the cows can reach the salt better through your Manger thereby lessening the extra work of packing half used salt blocks out
I've found that running poultry 2 days behind the cows on pasture is a great sanitation tool, and you get chicken! And eggs. Another thing is encouraging wild birds that feed off of flies by putting up bird houses. Complimentary enterprises! Definitely going to keep the garlic trick in mind to though.
Always So good to have a video from Farmer Rancher Tyler. Man if that works that will be awesome for fly control. We have cows behind us and the flies in the sumner are merciless on them. Especially around their eyes. Your dog is so well behaved. Ok I'm jealous of one thing..... YOUR TEMPERATURE....I'LL TAKE 65. OVER 5.
Really interesting - never would have thought of that "fix". The chemical treatments just tend to breed a more resistant strain of flies. I know of a seed stock producer that believes there is better than 50% heritability to fly resistance, and breeds his bulls accordingly.
Small world.... I have been underground in their mine here in Utah to work on one of their excavators. I'm retired now but I'd put that experience on the top 10 of my career. They are a very cool company and super nice people!!
It was nice seeing Buddy. He's small enough to become a "pocket pet" lol Good luck with the garlic blocks. I hope they work well enough that you don't have to use spray-on stuff.
I wasn't sure about the garlic mineral either at first, but I got a garlic mineral/protein lick tub and it helped to get rid of just about all of the flys. I hope the blocks help with your herd.
Oh man, love me some Garlic Beef w/green onions over rice. I'm ALL for these new salt blocks. Could Redmond also custom make a block with ground up chilies, peppercorns and some hoison sauce in it.....would LOVE to have some Szechuan Beef right off the hoof!!
Wow! I know that I haven't been following you for years but Buddy and the DONKEYS ARE BRAND NEW TO ME!! ❤❤❤❤ Donkeys just so happen to be my favorite animal. Omg. Can you please introduce them?? PLEASE. Donkeys are the cutest babies on the planet EVER!! What are their names? They are so beautiful. 💯💯💯❤️❤️❤️
Using Redmond's salt blocks in conjunction with distributing Spaulding fly predators around our property once a month during the summer has completely obliterated our fly problem on our ranch. Night and day difference.
Add brewers yeast with the garlic. It also can help with other parasites. The winter pasture cows can you not put the garlic & brewers yeast in the protein pellet bucket? Enjoy watching so much
Hope the Garlic has some effect on your fly problem. Looking forward to hearing what you think over the next few months. I made a salt station on pipe skids that has a tin roof over it to keep the salt protected from the weather, and I hung a cattle oiler over the entrance to it so the cows have to pass under it to access the salt. Works pretty good but the oiler is to high to help with the flies on the calves.
I grew up not far from Redmond Salt company here in Utah and can say that they are very nice people to deal with. Their salt products are nationwide and maybe even world wide by now. We always used their salt blocks on our farm. Hopefully this new product with garlic in it works for you and helps with the flies which are always a nuisance.
I'm so happy we got to see Buddy boy!!! He's a sweetheart. I just had a funny thought, if all cattleman started using the garlic salt blocks, our steaks would already have garlic added when bought at the store!🥩😉😂😆🤣
Thanks for the heads up on these. I drove 40 mikes to buy a couple. Cattle love them. Flies could care less. Has no effect on the flies. Never know until you try.
Thank you, Tyler. I appreciate your videos. Let me start by saying that I am really interested in farming and am planning a farm. 2ndly I would like to say(as strange as this may seem) that I have some anxiety issues and sometimes when I’m not feeling well I just turn on your videos. I appreciate your laid back vibe. I can just watch and fade off to sleep or get through anything that’s worrying me. Maybe the strangest comment you’ve ever gotten, but I’m not embarrassed. Thanks dude!
Flies spend the winter in diapause, a hibernation-like state of reduced metabolic activity. Out in the open, they prefer trees, hence your observation. However, they tend to prefer dung as a site for depositing their eggs. The eggs produce larvae, commonly known as maggots. The maggots eventually create cocoons, which in turn, when temperatures warm up produce those pesky flies.
Great shot of the birds FTR.....the Delta area we live in, sees @ a billion birds on a migratory route starting I believe in October. Seriously gonna try the Redmond blocks.
It's starting to get ta fly season. I got my fly gun out and remembered this video.....hope we get a follow up on what you think. I haven't bought my blocks yet, but looking for them now.
Good girl Maggie, stayed in the truck when she really wanted to scavenge. Why to the winter pasture cows get a protein grub and the home cows don’t? Really interesting that the winter pasture has the first hit of flies, wonder if they “winter” in the hollows or holes of the oak trees? Loved the geese flying, thanks for sharing. Good luck with the garlic blocks will be great if it even cuts the fly problem in half.
The ranch cows exist solely on hay which has sufficient protein for them. The winter pasture cows live on that same hay plus grass. This time of year the grass has low nutrition value so the tubs make up the difference. When we get a lot of sun and warmer days the grass quality will improve greatly and they won’t need the tubs anymore
Obviously a spray-on bedliner would be awesome but a plastic insert is what I've had in mind for the last 12 years I've owned the truck it's a 1999 Ford F250 Super Duty diesel four-door 8 foot bed the slide in plastic does the job and I see no damage to the bed it's not rusting my dad has a 2001 8ft bed Super Duty diesel also he has a spray in bedliner it really takes care of the truck and makes it lasts a lot longer I feel sure especially with the salt and different things we put in the back of the truck here on the farm also
Didn’t know about this! Thanks! We use loose Redmond Sel 90 salt already. We also use garlic for cows to boost immune system, and mixed with other things for dewormer. We built a walk thru fly trap we are trying this summer and will post a video. Otherwise zero degrees here and your green fields look amazing!
I give garlic to all my farm animals it dose really help specially on chickens the results are slow due to it takes time for it to enter the blood system wish you luck
A lot of humor in this group for sure FTR. Never really thought about getting a designer mineral/salt block. Might be a good alternative. Looking foreword to when the research data is published!!...LOL Hope it works, will definitely give it a try out here.
Hey, FTR, I'm a little jealous of you today. Here in my neck of Missouri it's snowy/icy and 17 degrees. I love the idea of pre-seasoned (garlic salt) beef. Maybe grind some Mexican jumping beans up in a batch of feed and develope a self flipping hamburger!!! The cold has got to me , I guess. Hope the natural approach to fly control works.
The Garlic block ive heard is pretty popular and last i checked i couldnt even get a normal mineral block for my cows. I dont have black cows so ive noticed that fly pressure is a lot less than on black cattle, but ours barely touched their garlic block. As for Buddy, possibly Dwarfism,
I watched this video again and I was wondering how those new salt blocks with the garlic are working? Also I have a question? Do you trim Buddys hooves? Or the donkeys hooves?
Well I guess that Buddy is a mini-moo. Interested that they are willing to make the cow licks to your specs. I wonder if they will as they grow. That would be nice. Good video as usual. Thx.
Great to see something more organic being used vs that awful insecticide fly control mineral. I'm curious if the cows are able to ingest enough just by licking the salt blocks to make a difference. Good experiment. When it's time to review I hope you can clip in some video footage from years prior to compare.
Just found this video. We have flies pretty bad since we have a stream that runs through the lower pasture and makes marsh like conditions. I was going to try rubbing food grade diametacous earth on the cattle this summer. This is something we might be able to try. Our bull just gets bit up real bad from the flies, you can see that it drives him nuts.
Awesome man! I'm looking forward to seeing how this goes. I hope it works out for ya. If anything, just having the minerals you want all in one block is a win. Nice to see buddy!
Hay! Give me back my Geese. I use to use sulfur in my salt. But then i was offered garlic, decided to try it. It does work better then sulfur but its still not a 100% fix.
Top of the morning to you. Heard about the channel from country view acres. New subscriber and set my alert. Look forward to seeing all your videos. Terry lucky charm acres Catskills NY. No channel just a small farm 20 acres
Hello Terrance and welcome to the channel! Yes I saw Evans video this morning and was so excited when he mentioned me! He’s got a great channel. I really appreciate you coming over and I hope you enjoy the channel!
We just had our Kent feeds nutritionist out about 6 months ago. We asked him about the garlic blocks. He said there is no benefit to them except they make your cows smell.
I hope they work for you. We have started to experiment with some Swallow bird boxes. Plus we have found that some cows are just more prone to flys and we have started selling off those cows out of our genetics.
You won't know for months, along the lines of you are what you eat. I have delighted in some mule deer that were grain fed but migrated to natural grass land with lots of sage brush growing there. You can actually taste the sage in the venison, simply delicious IMO. I wonder if the beef will pick up the flavor of garlic?
Such a good dog. What's the reason for lifting her in and out of the truck instead of vocal commands? So glad you're enjoying warm weather. Here in Southwestern Indiana Saturdays forecast is high 17 low -4. Be glad to trade you temps.
Thank you Barbara. Back in her day she would jump in and out all the time on command but at 13 years old that impact from landing is just too much for her so I won’t let her do it anymore
Ok, now you said you wondered if the natural remedies really work effectively. You also said that the garlic scent was really stong. Soooo do you see any vampires. Hope you have success with the effects of blocks. Flies and other similar pests make animals restless and stresses them. When my cows were contented and stressless, they held and maintained weight consistently. Hope you experience success. Blessings to you and your family. ☝️🙏🙏💪🙌...
I use Redmond salt for home use so we get extra minerals too. My question for you, or other ranchers here, is do you think there will be a garlic taste or some kind of meat taint flavor due to the garlic in the blocks? Please keep us posted as to how these blocks work! Im hoping they do help because we dont like spraying chemicals either. Thanks for the advise and updates!
I'm glad you finally put Buddy in the video. I been missing seeing him😍.
FTR gets my vote for a Grammy for the best video theme song. Love it!
Haha thank you!

Awwwww I love seeing Buddy. He's small but perfect in every way 👌👌🌷🌟🌟🌟🌟🌷
Great idea about the garlic mineral blocks. I love garlic and the steaks from those claves will be infused with garlic, so great idea.👍
I've found that running poultry 2 days behind the cows on pasture is a great sanitation tool, and you get chicken! And eggs. Another thing is encouraging wild birds that feed off of flies by putting up bird houses. Complimentary enterprises!

Oh, I've missed him so much! Redmond also makes a great salt for cooking... I live close by!
Is there an update about the quality of the fly killing garlic infused salt blocks?

Hi nice video where I can get those minerals blocks with garlic where I get my minerals blocks they say they don't have those kinds
This is going to be so interesting!

I watched this video again and I was wondering how those new salt blocks with the garlic are working? Also I have a question? Do you trim Buddys hooves? Or the donkeys hooves?
Perhaps it’s a good experiment to spray the oak trees in early spring and again in mid-summer to mitigate the fly pressure?

Evan from Country View Acres mentioned your channel. Thought I would give you a try. Enjoyed this video and look forward to following along.

I wish you would make a video about your snack sticks
The same thing apply to humans it will keep the mosquito off but when you sweat you will smell like garlic

Hi, After a year, hows that salt block with garlic working out?
What yr cooking there looks yummy, hope the salt blocks work for ya.👍🌝
Been most of the year now so how did the garlic work on the Flies
Great with garlic
I hope it really works so that I can try it as well. I have to check if Tractor Supply sells them. Thanks
I don’t believe TSC is a dealer but you can use this link to find a dealer near you-
