I did exactly the same as you did: I took over my grandparents ranch after having left Heidelberg University with a degree. Now I have been working as a High school teacher for over 35 years and running my farm which I got from my grandma . I am breeding cattles( Charolais) and horses on my 60 acres and I have my regular income from my teacher job. So I can afford a lot of stuff that makes my life much easier here on my farm.
Greetings from Germany and go on with your awesome videos!

    Loved watching this video.
My husband has grown up farming all of his young life...he is 62 now. Times were hard & his parents lost their farm. He has always worked jobs that had to do with farming in one way or another. Now his youngest son has his own land with 40 pairs on it. And they also farm 400 acres of various crops corn/soybeans/hay. He is helping his son make it work. It's a tough road but they both love it.
We live in Southeast Kansas & farmers around here are not of the younger generation...if you know what i mean.
Stick to your dreams and "grow" with them.
    Much luck to you!

You are right about college vs experience. I went to school to be a teacher, and then found out that teaching was not my job. What made college valuable, I think, was learning how to learn, and finding out that there was a whole lot in this world to learn about. Most of what I know and use every day, I learned on the job.

I really enjoyed hearing your story. When I was young I always wanted to be a farmer. My dad was a county extension director. Both he and my mom were raised on farms. I helped friends during high school on their family farms. When I was old enough I joined 4-H and raised hogs. I rented space from farmers that were close enough to town to bike to.
I learned early on that if you didn't grow up in a farm family it's hard to get land. So I did three years in the army, went to college to become a teacher. I taught for 33 years. I retired, sort of, 3 years ago. I now deliver mail. I am a small town guy and my happiest times are when I'm out in the country.

I just came across this. I’ve been watching your videos for a while. It is nice to understand your story. Little bits of it resonate with my own - and other bits are completely different.
What is the same is that we both run a small beef herd … and enjoy doing so. In spite of being at opposite ends of the earth … we share a Mediterranean climate and some other things. I enjoy the practical simplicity of your videos and pick up an idea for my own place every now and again.

I have worked in healthcare for 38 years. I have always felt that my education was excellent not just because we had fabulous professors who had many years of hands on experience, but because over the two years of the course we spent 2400 hours in local hospitals for clinical practicum. It was quite expensive for the era, but so excellent that I have never regretted it.
This wasn't a profession I would have imagined for myself, but I took a job as a nurses aide to prevent starving and ended up helping the RTs and it all just fell into place.

Brilliant story Tyler, may I wish you and your wife the very best of luck with your goals, and my God bless you both. This story is very familiar to me, and just like me, you have the farming disease, I firmly believe it is something to behold, and only those that have it can understand it. Regarding the people that want your rented property, that is a universal problem for us small farmers, my advice is just keep a step ahead of them. Look after the land like it is your own, that way the owner can have no complaints, because I have found that owners of rented land prioritise how their land is treated more
    the rental income.

So much enjoyed learning about your start. It is incredible how our early paths paralleled each other. I spent time just like you on my grandpa's farm (corn & beans row-cropped, fed 250 head of feeder cattle, farrow-finished 400 sows, & 10-15 thousand turkeys each year) learned so much from my grandpa, who in addition to farming was a cattle buyer. From him I learned by actions, not words that a man's word was his bond. The buyer said I want so many head of calves at such and such weight, my grandpa said I will have them for you with no contracts signed. Those were the good old days! Very best of luck and continuing success to you! Be blessed.

Love your story Tyler. You, my dear are one of the few younger generation who simply loves farming and does not mind the hard work involved. Then, you found a young lady who wants to share your dreams. I grew up on a small grade b dairy and cow/calf farm about 100 miles north of you. That life style is a very fond memory and certainly gives you great work ethics. At this age of well past retirement I still long for for the farm life...or at least parts of it. So glad to have found your channel, it is a joy to follow you along...and, to see that you really did learn from your grandpa the slow, methodical way with cattle. Good luck in all your endeavors and I will watch as long as you UT. Might even take a drive down your way.

When you were driving to the house and barn, and said guess where we are? My thought was, California agriculture roads.
I remember coming home from college in the Midwest and I needed to go for a drive and soak up being back n California. There's nothing like driving on agriculture roads in California, and of course, stopping at all the fruit and vegetable stands. Nothing like fresh fruit and vegetables, after a winter in the Midwest, LOL

It's funny how farming and mechanicing / welding/ fabricating go hand-in-hand. I probably started learning how to turn wrenches before I was even 10. My father was a Master Mechanic for as far as I can remember he actually graduated Vo-Tech a year and a half early and ended up teaching the rest of his semesters. I followed my dad around everywhere he went since I was knee-high to a jackrabbit I think I knew my rent size before my shoe size if you know what I mean. Between learning everything my father taught me working on the farm with the rest of my family cousins Aunts Uncles grandparents you learn to put all your skills together make things happen and save a dollar it's funny my father did not want me to be a mechanic. Now I have been a mechanic for almost 30 years before he died he was more proud me being exactly what he taught me to be. Your story reminds me of myself in a lot of ways. It's always good to see someone else out there living and struggling for the same achievements in life good luck and I wish you nothing but the best

I just found your channel yesterday and subscribed, love catching up on some of your videos. It's nice to see another small livestock producer. My wife and I have a small operation (15 momma cows) in Oklahoma that started with my parents, but when my Dad passed we had to downsize, and we don't have the money that my parents did so we do it part time while both working full time. So I can definitely relate in some ways. And I like hearing folks' stories and how they got to where they are; I always like knowing why other people do what they do and it makes me feel less alone in the good and bad times of being in this business. I do have one question; have your parents never been involved in the farm/ranch? Just curious as it sounds like it skipped a generation to you. Thank you again for sharing!

Thank you OSUOiler. Most people that do this have a “real” job too it seems like, no shame in that! 15 cows will keep you plenty busy. The ranch came from my moms side and no she didn’t have any interest in taking it over. My parents are involved in farming though, they grow walnuts now in their “retirement “ if you can call it that! Thanks for the comment! And welcome to the channel!

Nice story, I knew I like ya for some reason, your life similar to mine (except for the wife). I figured the "LA" stood for "Loosing your A**", Ha, Ha. Farming life, you either love it or you don't, it's hard to explain. I did the college thing (got three papers hanging on the wall) and came back to the farm every weekend and summer. Worked factory jobs for 35 years; and farmed on my vacations and weekends. Did I see a Harbor Freight cement mixer in the background. Got one too !!!! Really a work saver. Oh; and if ya throw a piece of chain around the bottom of your steering wheel, it will stay straight.

Enjoyed your story about how you got to be a farmer. I’m 66 years old (retired) carpenter,US navy vet from Minnesota. My wife & I live on her great grandfathers old farm in SW MN. He came from Norway in early 1900s & settled here in 1919. My father in law bought the farm from my mother in laws uncle, one of the great grandfathers sons. We just have the building sit of 5+ acres. We enjoy living in the country about 6 miles from town. My brothers & I have farm land near the Minnesota river in Renville Co. Minnesota from my mom, grandpa great grandpa & great great grandfather who settled it in1866. My great great grandfather came to this country from Ireland in 1828 with his family when he was 14 years old. As kids we visited the farm with our parents quite often. We are now the 5th generation to own the farm continuous. It only has about 100 acres tillable & 100 acres that used to be pasture.

I made it to the end. I maybe an old lady from NC but I was raised on a farm and I can understand your dream. The sad thing is that things where I live have gotten so expensive that people are selling their farms piece at a time to people who want to live in the country but have no idea about loving the life. Hope your dreams work for you and your wife.

I would have guessed fabricator. You are extremely mechanically inclined. I work with and am over a lot of people and most people are not. You definitely figure out what needs to happen in your mind and go with it. I enjoy watching you and feel like I know you even though I live all the way on the East coast. In Eastern North Carolina. Lagrange to be exact.

I lived all my life in city, but I know what you meant by "whoever gets it, gets it, who doesn't, doesn't"! Always loved to live a country life, always wanted a smaller house with big land. Married to a girl, who likes firm-living, but also like city life, and these two doesn't go together.
Nice story, make sure you keep telling this story to your kids, it is a tradition that you want your kids to follow! God bless.

      @farmertylerranch4399  5 років тому

Thank you! Hey 3 acres per cow isn’t that bad either. In Nevada high desert they need 100+ acres per one cow! We can only stock so dense due to irrigation and rotational grazing. Without it I could only seasonally graze here.

Great story I'm sixty one now Started with fifteen acres then bought a family farm of 318 acres. I started with tobacco on the fifteen acres. Rented or picked up parcels for hay. Mom and Da had twelve acres that I started with basically 5 cull cows and a bull I fed to use. I was a grass farmer they called me. Hay and cattle. Now I raise about 200 acres of soybeans, 150 acres of good pasture. I run around 70 head of cows with calves. My boys are kinda interested but don't have that hungry look in their eyes I used to see in the mirror. I've done my part. It's up to them when I'm gone.

Thanks Ardurbin, now is that because of my hat saying “Davis” on it? What you probably can’t see is it actually says Davis Machine Shop, totally unaffiliated with the university and actually not even close to the town of Davis! I wasn’t smart enough for UCD but Chico was glad to have me haha! But seriously Chico has an awesome animal science program
