Basically, the interior is a well thought out and time-lasting design. The seats aren’t bad but they just aren’t what 10/10th sports bucket seats should be but it’s immensely useable on a daily basis for 9/10th driving. Basically, it’s exactly what a Spyder version of a GT4 should be.

@@billyhughes9776 Here's a helpful life tip. Make it your mission to pay off any debts as soon as you can. Don't pay the minimum. Make huge additional payments on the principal. So, for example, if you have a mortgage, don't actually be in debt for 30 years. Set a goal to pay it off in no more than 10 years. And make sure you put a huge down payment. Like don't put down 20 percent, rent until you can save up and put down at least 40 percent down. I'm in my mid-30's, and I'm debt free. No mortgage, no car payment, etc. I own everything outright. It took a lot of sacrifice. But now I can start having lots of fun. I didn't have to wait till retirement age. Remember, every dollar you pay in interest is a dollar you can't spend on a Porsche. Don't let a rich banker use your money to buy himself a Porsche. Make it your mission in life to pay off any debts as fast as you can.

But that's a ton of money to spend on a single depreciating item that will likely only be used for a few hours on weekends. And the purchase price is just the beginning. There will also be the massive cost of maintenance, repairs, and insurance. Nope, I'll stick with economy cars.
Couldn’t disagree with you over the interior more than I do and I have driven / owned several…and there is one aspect that you must have mentioned / taken into account: this is basically a 981 car (released in 2012…forget the 718 marketing hype) with a minor facelift a few years ago. So it cant compare against a current 992 for example but poor? Far from it: it is still special after all these years which just shows how sound its interior / exterior were when they were first designed.
@@wayward03 we agree to disagree or at least I do: it is not poor neither it is over priced: it simply the best mid engined car of its class anyone can buy and Porsche remains on a class of its own
I have a 2023 Spyder. You guys are insane. This is Peak Porsche for the money. It out drives many 911s. Lack of wow factor? What are you smoking? I can’t drive down the road without people taking pictures. I love the buttons and tactical feel of a proper sports car. You can keep your Haptic Touch screens in the Lexus cars.
You don't get a spyder without the upgraded bucket seats. The bucket seats are very comfortable. The interior and spec of your test car was minimal. That was basically a completely base car. A proper spec spyder with extended leather etc is 135k... if your test car was 109k that's effectively a car with 0 options added.
"Few Driver's Cars Left" that statement is exactly why all enthusiasts need to save up as much as they can for their desired car, as they won't be around in 10 years. Especially if you want a manual transmission.
They will be gone in significantly less than 10 years (the Biden administration is introducing new emission standards in the next few days): "The increased standards will be paired with an executive order stating a goal of making half of all new vehicles sold in 2030 emissions-free and a pledge from the Detroit automakers that they will aim to sell at least 40% electric vehicles annually by 2030. Company leaders will join Biden at the White House on Thursday afternoon to announce the sales targets." I do not think I am exaggerating by stating that it is the goal of this administration to drive vehicles like the Boxster Spyder completely off the public highways....never to return.
Nice review, looked like a blast on track. Porsche Spyders are fantastic cars. I have a 981 Spyder and it’s such an entertaining car, every drive feels special. The 987s are amazing too. The purity to performance scale representing where generation sits is spot on. Each generation of Spyder has their own flavor and there’s something for everyone. Did you put 718 on the scales and if so, what did it weigh? I didn’t see the graphic during the Shoppe segment.
@@bcc5701 I don't have experience with it myself but I've heard that because of the wind going over the windshield you kind of get a air barrier that blows the rain away before it falls into the cabin. At least, at highway speeds.

@Nomen Clature no they shouldn’t, they have a long wait list for a reason. The buyers don’t care and resale value is over sticker on these. I think Porsche knows what they are doing.
The thing that drives me nuts is that the engine sounds so good at high rpm, buy the gearing makes it hard to get there if you're driving on back roads. The joy of this car should be the 2-3-4 shifts, and the gearing is just too tall.
I really like seeing your videos on the GT4 and the Spyder because you give me relief, that this is still one of the greatest cars, everyone always says "Oh no, gearing ruins this cars 😖" but you're saying "This has long gears and it's fine because it shares that characteristic with other track cars :) and a lot of those other highly praised cars are just like this :)" and I like that more realistic perspective that both of you have where not everything the internet says is true to you :)
I enjoy your reviews very much. I happen to like this interior quite a bit and I believe it will age better than most sports car interiors out there. Regarding the “long” gear ratio, my conclusion is that that is a byproduct of having a very high RPM range. When we used to drive sports cars in manual gear, remember, those cars used to have 6800 RPMs and we drove them between 4500 & 6500. So naturally, it required more shifting back and forth btwn 2nd & 3rd gear. Of course, one can argue that the overall gearing can be lowered. But if they did that, under normal driving, we would be forced to shift up from 1st to 2nd way too quickly and it would be unbearable to drive the car under normal conditions. Even in generally spirited driving, the shifting happens btwn 5000 & 6000 and rarely need to get past 7000. No one who owns these cars and wants to keep them will wring it out every time they get in. The car is very lively and powerful enough to get in and out of the bends as fast as one would want on the road. I have no issue with the gearing and I am convinced Porsche knew what they are doing when they set up these cars for the consumers. In conclusion, nostalgia over manual shifting is great but I have come to accept that such was great for the cars of the bygone era. New cars like these are too advanced for manual shifting to make sense. That said, I do enjoy the manual shifting on this car immensely and I don’t have to run it at full throat to enjoy it. We just can’t expect cars that get 8000, 9000 RPM to shift like those old cars with 6800 RPMs.
Do you think you might be getting a bit jaded? Most of us dream about getting a chance to thrash a beauty like this 718. Your critique of the interior came across to me as a tad nit-picky. I'd love to wring 8,000 rpm out of a Porsche on a country road. Alas I have only a 20-year old NB MX-5 but the car still puts a smile on my face. Thanks for all you do. I never miss a video.
This car is at the end of its lifecycle. And the 982 is almost a 981.2. I’ll be interested to see how they shoehorn their new interior into something as cozy as a Boxster.
@@Meatwad650 Porsche never has a "revolution" in their models. They are always evolutionary!! That is why they hold their value. Look at Mercedes....they change it up every 3-4 years. And guess what....their reasle value suffers because the latest cars oboless the previous ones. It is why the 911 has held value over time.
@@flyjbaker You miss the point. The 718 shares an interior with the 991.2. Most of the parts are identical. But now the 992 has had a big interior upgrade. Compare the 992 to the 991.2 and you’ll see what I mean. So obviously the next big refresh for the 718 will hopefully bring PCM 5 to the Cayman/Boxster and I’m curious what that will look like.
as with my s2000- a driver's car- this is the one car I'd replace it with...if the lottery win came in. manual fun in the sun! I'd fire it around the slalom course all day long. thanks for the review.
Great video. The 718 sounds good but the 981 Spyder sounds GREAT. If I were to guess, I suspect the 981 will be the more sought after car in the future. That’s why I am on the hunt for one currently! And a PDK doesn’t belong in a Spyder IMO.
I’ve had both, the 718 Spyder even with over axle pipes (a very common and relatively easy mod) still doesn’t sound as good as my 981 Spyder but it’s close enough. Because Porsche collectors are into exclusivity I suppose the fact that the 981 Spyder was only sold for one model year May help it in the future but as far as a drivers car the 718 Spyder buries the 981. The suspension is such much more focused, the steering has much more feel, the structure is the most granite like I’ve experienced in any open topped car that isn’t a Mclaren, and best of all it actually somehow rides even better than the 981 did. I also happen to think it looks far better with its GT4 bulldog stance but that’s just my opinion, the difference in driving between the two cars is vast
Good review, and thanks for putting the gear length in the proper context, with relevant comparisons. Hardly anyone else does that. Too much shallow, generic hand wringing
I have the same colour combination which I love. What do I dislike, the manual roof. If I could do it over again I would get the 718 GTS which wasn't available when I ordered mine. Great review men!
@savagegeese I have a question, would you pick this (Spyder/GT4) or the 992 Carrera S manual you reviewed some months back? I know this being 718 platform (plus GT car parts) it feels more direct and compact, but overall which did you enjoy more?
Great video! You guys set a very high standard. Couldn't help but giggle at "makes peak power at the very top of its power band" in the final thoughts section though 🤭
The thing is,the sort of folks who are gonna buy this don't care about the fact that a Mustang GT could possibly take them on a set of traffic lights. They just want a car that is the benchmark for every other performance product out there.
You DON'T like the interior? Looks fantastic with big analog gauges and plenty of buttons. Guess it feels cheap to touch. I think it looks amazing. And NO screen mounted on the dash, just in the center stack where it belongs. It stands out due to its simplicity. But yes, it's pretty costly for what it is. But how about that six speed manual transmission?
I love my Spyder as much as my 991.2. I don’t think my full leather/alcantara interior looks cheap at all. What vents aren’t plastic? I get it red plastic looks a little wierd. My Macan turbo/pp had the full red leather interior. The red plastic looks a little off but the Corvette?? Haha. See what that interior looks like in 5 years compared to the Porsche. Personally, I love putting my top down manually. Takes 18 seconds and 24 to put up. He doesn’t like the seats???!!! Are you for real!!!??? Turned the bud off after listening to him complain for 5 minutes. Dude you’re insane.
I am not so sure about the Diff. being electronic on the PDK cars. It is on the 911's, but according to Porsche's website, there is no E-Diff. option on any 718. I have a 2022 PDK GT4 on order (will be here in Nov.) and I spent hours researching this very thing as I have the E-diff. in my current SS 1LE and it is amazing at what it does. However, all literature I have come across says the the E-diff. is only an option on the 911's. The difference between the PDK cars and the manual cars on the 718's (or at least on the GT4 and Spyder) is they have different locking % values, however both are mechanical in operation from everything I have seen. PTV = mechanical locking with a pre-set locking % value PTV+ = E-Diff. with variable electronic locking

Makes me want a GT4. Makes me want to work for my fun.
Good video, good car, good content
Really appreciate the street and track reviews separately. Also makes me giddy to see you doing another Porsche review!
Test driving one tomorrow, excited! Nice review!

@@TGCREken Took delivery of my Spyder in June and it’s amazing, drive it everyday even if it’s a short spin!
I never thought the interior was bad. I like its simplicity, the LWBS etc... It's a GREAT sports car!
How is it that you guys are the only ones doing actually informative videos well.
Right?! Savagegeese outclasses and makes Top Gear look like a billionaire student film project.
@@kevind4061 It's pretty cringe that top gear still uses those very early 2,000s filters and fast editing tricks. It was cool 20 years ago, it's time to stop.
All the downsides to this car sound like the reasons I love my AP1 S2000. You have to work for it.
Please this is the best looking Porsche at the moment, yes for looks the humps help, 4 liter engine and manual gearbox (a must) what not to like. A drivers car for sure. Performance wise is more than at first side. Yes PDK is the great but for pure joy we all need a manual.
I can’t believe you guys aren’t over a million subscribers yet, really amazing content and love the honest and genuine takes on all of these cars
As always guys, solid content no matter the car. Great work and great editing.
You two are very very good with these vehicle reviews, absolutely spot on.
I’m a very blessed Porschephile and own a 911 Cab, 911 Targa, and 991.2 GT3 Touring. However, my 718 Spyder is my favorite car. Better than my 981 which I no longer own but also was great. If I could only keep one it would be the manual Spyder
And there you have it friends!!!!
The interior is classy, refined and beautiful. It is not intended to be flashy and gimmicky like the vette
I would take this car over a base 911 any day of the week!
I love everything about this car, but it will remain a dream. Great review! Congrats on 500k subs -- much deserved.
As a starving student, with no money, little food, and living in a VW Rabbit, I told myself one day, after I finish school, I will own a 911 turbo, and drive the PCH from Santa Barbara to Canada. That became reality, simply because I made it happen. It's only unattainable if you make it so.
@@eraab6458 You are correct. I did overstate. I could make it happen but it's just not the right time for me. A belated congrats to you on making that dream happen.
@@hamsterama Thanks for the info. I'm, um, several years older than you. Was not too responsible with money throughout my 20s but got it together in my early-mid 30s. No CC debt, no car payment, good savings and a manageable mortgage. If I wanted to, sure, I could buy a car like this now but it's just not the right time. But, not sure I'd ever want to shell out 100K+ on a car. So, I did overstate a bit in my original comment. Can I? Yes. Will I,...probably not. Ha -- take care.
@@billyhughes9776 Hahahaha oops sorry! :D I'm not sure why, but I presumed you were a young dude. So....Disregard my comment. LOL! Anyway, I also can't imagine spending over $100,000 on a single car. I'm sure I could technically buy this Porsche if I save up enough over the next few years. But that's a ton of money to spend on a single depreciating item that will likely only be used for a few hours on weekends. And the purchase price is just the beginning. There will also be the massive cost of maintenance, repairs, and insurance. Nope, I'll stick with economy cars.
haven't been in the newest generation of these cars but the previous gen cayman gt4 left my jaw on the floor, just an epic car
King of car montages. Get him a crown.
Alfa Romeo 4C owner here! That interior looks like royalty compared to my car! P.S. just trying to make savagegeese laugh :)
He has no clue!
@@Perriermaster9 indeed!
Having the car actually be 9 years old is not an excuse especially for that price....
@@wayward03 we agree to disagree or at least I do: it is not poor neither it is over priced: it simply the best mid engined car of its class anyone can buy and Porsche remains on a class of its own
@@wayward03 And exactly how is this car 9 years old? Do you not know how to subtract? My 2016 Spyder is not 9 years old either, just sayin’.
Great review. Nice Doug impression at 2:56 lol
"Few Driver's Cars Left" that statement is exactly why all enthusiasts need to save up as much as they can for their desired car, as they won't be around in 10 years. Especially if you want a manual transmission.
Amen brutha!!!
@@1PorscheCaymanS Yeah, even before he announced anything I already expected this shift to happen.

Best car reviews on UA-cam.
"Top operation is not going to take you 20 seconds" - while Jack literally takes less than 20 seconds to operate the top.
Also your on the highway and it’s starts to rain- your getting soaked.

@@bcc5701 I don't have experience with it myself but I've heard that because of the wind going over the windshield you kind of get a air barrier that blows the rain away before it falls into the cabin. At least, at highway speeds.
@@BOTYgaming he meant you'd get wet while stopping to put the top up because of it taking roughly 60 seconds. But if you were running around you could maybe do it in 30. You're still getting wet haha
I don't really care for or about sports cars. But your reviews make me care a lot more. You guys create compelling content.
Love Mark’s hat. Big fan of SC here. Great video, too!!
Great video! Would love to see a cayman generational comparison video in the future.
What a beautiful car. God, I want one
The way the PDK dumps the clutch at 6500rpm just gets me going
Love the opening roll play
Do you think you might be getting a bit jaded? Most of us dream about getting a chance to thrash a beauty like this 718. Your critique of the interior came across to me as a tad nit-picky. I'd love to wring 8,000 rpm out of a Porsche on a country road. Alas I have only a 20-year old NB MX-5 but the car still puts a smile on my face. Thanks for all you do. I never miss a video.
I agree it is due for an interior update, but corvette will never have the fit and finish of a Porsche. Love the channel though!
It takes 8 hours to build a C8 Corvette. It takes 8 days to build a Spyder!!!
Videos like this always get me in the mood to drive.
You guys make the best videos The quality of the video is awesome.
It sounds fantastic. Normally I would go for the 911, but the Spyder has my attention.
You better hurry. They are not easy to acquire!!!
Can’t wait for mine in December ~ great review
You keep hitting it out of the park! Great review.
Good review, and thanks for putting the gear length in the proper context, with relevant comparisons. Hardly anyone else does that. Too much shallow, generic hand wringing
The aesthetics of the Autobahn opening sequence is just pure pleasure. As is the driving, I gather.
Can't wait for Gt3 review
I have the same colour combination which I love. What do I dislike, the manual roof. If I could do it over again I would get the 718 GTS which wasn't available when I ordered mine. Great review men!
@savagegeese I have a question, would you pick this (Spyder/GT4) or the 992 Carrera S manual you reviewed some months back? I know this being 718 platform (plus GT car parts) it feels more direct and compact, but overall which did you enjoy more?
Brandy - You're a Fine Girl on the stereo. priceless
I got that sypder classic interior package, all quality leather, 18 way adjustments, I and people like it.
There is a screen in the gauge cluster, it's the small pod to the right of the tach.

Dude you’re insane.
wow you actually found a place to turn left and right... good job bros might want to try the 18 way seats they are far better than the crap base seats
The wow factor is the spyder top and bubble humps plus it has the old 991 interior with all the buttons and analog dials
Man I remember when Boxters started at $60-$70k There really are amazing drivers cars though
They still start in the 60s
So you're paying at least over 50k from the standard boxter, almost double the base price ??! Ludicrous!
@@TheRaysDoc Thats how it works with 911s, too. Twice the base price and you're in the ballpark.

PTV = mechanical locking with a pre-set locking % value
PTV+ = E-Diff. with variable electronic locking
I was just behind one yesterday in Newport RI - and now this. LOVE it.
If you see a Spyder for the first time....you will never forget it!!!
