@Norris Cool I'm open to a lot of different genres of music. Whether it be blues, jazz, hip-hop, stoner rock, deathgrind, ambient, fusion, black metal ... etc., one of the genres I don't choose to listen to is 2010's pop. I consider the Motown sound to be "pop" because it was omnipresent (I wouldn't say all that representative) during the dramatic political and societal upheaval of that time. More as a form of escapism. I find it hypocritical when a person obsesses over black music but says that the US is going straight to oblivion once Johnson ever has motives at hand to restrict segregation and succeeds and when you ask why you have some Supremes vinyl under your stereo, they'll say some shit about how this is what they're best at and they should stay in their place and never dare to voice their own personal opinions. I call it "The Second Harlem Renaissance". It wasn't until the 70's when R&B in particular became more up front about politics. In one year there was the slick, sultry production and biting Nixon-era satire of Curtis Mayfield's solo debut and Sly and the Family Stone changed their multi-ethnic lineup to transform themselves as prominent figures *supposedly* linked to members of the Black Panther Party. This was the first record distributed to the pop market to feature a drum machine (not Kraftwerk, whom I admire greatly). This was done, like you said before, by people of color. There was a balance between the groupie-banging classic rock, infectious funk grooves and coke-saturated disco. Still, while many seemed to embrace the new sounds of the black community, at the core was racial bias, subjective, bigoted, and condescendingly superficial standards towards beauty and anything in between. We had a segregationist running for President for Christ's sake. MTV had a strict black code. In its first year and a half, there was rarely any black musicians showcased. You have white (mostly rock) bands that soak in disco, voice their appreciation towards black styles of music, and use it to their benefit. Blondie's "Rapture" and Talking Heads' "Crosseyed and Painless". (David Byrne of the band was listening to a lot of Fela Kuti at the time and later founded Luaka Bop, which is a label that features primarily Afrobeat and sometimes Arabic, Caribbean, and Trinidadian dance pop, folk and hip-hop) Which are bops and both with *rap* breakdowns, are prime examples. MJ's publicist (when promoting "Billie Jean") told the executives at their studios if you don't release the video for his new single, I'm forcing both Columbia and Epic to pull their rosters' videos from regular rotation and I'm going to expose you and your utter refusal to play something like Rick James, Shalamar, Prince or Morris Day.
"sHe'S iTaLiAn" geez have you ever even been to italy?? i live in Rome and people are generally white ahaha like of course there are black italians, but most of the time italians are white, maybe some are tanned or they have an olive skin tone, but they are still white...
Lol not trying to defend her or anything, but when you live or are from a country where the standard skin complexion is not just one color, it really depends on the region within that country. If you want an example of a full on Italian that’s tan or olive, look at Alesia Cara. The same thing goes for Hispanic, Indians, Middle Eastern and so on. There is not a standard skin color. And if anyone disagrees then you’re practicing what’s known to be colorism.
@@icecreamstar34 Alessia Cara's skin tone has changed a little bit but still in the same range, like something you could believe happens with stations but Ariana's skin is not one or two tones different is a whole world of difference
@niya She gets plastic surgery. I don’t know if she does that to look mixed and I don’t think the changes to her face are particularly ethic looking. It is possible that she might do that in the future since she’s not against changing her features with plastic surgery.
To everybody who says “She’s Italian, of course her skin is dark”..... why wasn’t she THAT dark during her Nickelodeon time? She didn’t start getting “tan” until she did the mix aesthetic wave. Until she started dating black men.
I’m a black white and Mexican mix and with me in particular, I can get pretty dark naturally but at the moment I haven’t been out much so I’m pretty pale. Maybe her skin is like mine? I don’t know her personally so I don’t know if she tans or not but I’m just giving myself as an example that I can look super white one winter then look as tan as ari that summer
Honestly as an Albanian believe me the skin colour is nothing.. Here in Mediterranean countries most people are like this , when it comes to more white skin people you can understand when they trying to fake it cause we don't have money for fake tan so they go with the natural way and they don't get darker, they end up burned .. So just the colour of her skin says nothing..
Personal thought she was Spanish decent BC her last name is grande and I don't know if that's a stage name but she is white as far as race that's easy...
To anyone who's trying to defend her by using her Italian ancestry- she's white, just accept it. Yes, Italians tend to be more tan than your average white person. So what? Literally every race comes in a variety of skin tones. There are some Asian people with paper-white skin, there are some Asian people with tan, olive skin, there are darker skinned black people, there are lighter skinned black people. That doesn't suddenly put them in some racial sub-category. Italians are just a slightly darker shade of white, as is Ariana Grande.
She isnt naturally that dark even her ex Pete said she uses spray tans. If u see her on Sam and Cat shes a regular looking white chic. I think the problem is the black community “claimed her” (find the tweets on “black twitter”) and now she thinks she can be “mixed-ish” to appeal more to the community
No, there are absolute "sub-races". "white" and "asian" are incredibly vague and could mean a huge number of people that are different. "White" could mean northwestern european, as in britain, france, germany, etc. or it could mean mediterrianian, like italian, greek, spanish - both groups are related but not identical and i personally wouldn't lump them together, as the climates are quite different. The same with asians, East or South east asians, literally the difference between a people who have lived in a jungle and people who have lived in temperate / siberian areas. And besides the whole racialist shit is so american anyways i cannot wait until we stop looking at the world as racial blobs.
Nah Sza be trying it with the fake freckles and accent. She goes for an exotic aesthetic too even though she’s still viewed as African American, just eccentric. I loved her music way more before fame.
@@laurenelise12 That is what EVERYONE does in the entertainment industry. People knock her fake freckles but have nothing to say about these butt length weaves. Same thing IMO. Those are all extra accoutrements made to elevate the image of the entertainer. Let's not be hypocrites and knock Sza for painting on freckles if we are not going to knock Beyonce or Nicki Minaj for rocking blonde wigs.
American Creole Read my post again and you’ll see that I am INCLUDING Sza in that group WITH those entertainers, not exclusively pointing her out. I was addressing her specifically because of the original post above. My whole point was that they all perpetuate this so-called exotic aesthetic
to all these people in the comments saying "she's Italian though!!" do y'all realise that Italian isn't a race but a nationality/ethnicity and that Italy is a white predominantly country, right? RIGHT?
Karols K I am Italian. From Sicily, the South, where Italians are considered to be darker in complexion. And of course there's a lot of people with dark skin. There's also black Italians, since "Italian" is - as Alicia said - a nationality. But this doesn't give any Italian person the right to claim to be a person of color. Italians are generally considered white because we mostly are. You can be a person of color AND be Italian, but being Italian doesn't automatically mean you are a person of color. I'm pale as fuck, caucasian and with reddish/dark blond hair. I have never experienced racism in my life and the same goes for my entire family, even the ones who get literally brown under the sun in summer. I wouldn't DARE to claim the struggle of a person of color.
This always confused me. I am greek. We are concidered white right? Cause I have blond friends with paper white skin tone and blue eyes but I am naturaly olive and tanning can make mw look like ariana naturaly. We Mediteranians are really diverse, but we are xoncidered white right?
I am not black, or a female. But I love watching your videos because I am able to get a different point of view, one that is more nuanced and better understanding on subjects I couldn't even begin to comprehend. thank you for all your informative content! :)
Even as a white woman who doesn't see myself as a social justice warrior, there's something about a white girl trying to be black that rubs me the wrong way. It's only until now that I realize its the fact that these girls want the black girl look and swagger, without the black girl experience or struggle. It doesn't feel like they earned that look. It's like when I got made fun of for my freckles, and now girls are drawing that ish on their face. Or when I was made fun of for being a "four eyes", but now they show off fake lenses all while having 20/20 vision. Obviously very different extremes, but it does beg the question, "Oh so NOW that you decide it looks good. Where was your enthusiasm years ago?"
I said the same thing in my Blackfishing video! They aren't trying to look black, they're trying to look "Other"! It's the new standard of beauty in America.
Ruru Home Chile, same here. Being a dark skinned teen in the 80s meant you were basically ignored. Sometimes your were thrown the "you're pretty for a black/dark skinned girl." bone.
It's so painfully obvious that the people saying "but she's italian tho!!" are north-americans who have never been to the south of Europe. As a spanish girl: almost everyone is white, from here to Italy, and the racism is real on black, brown and dark skinned people in general. I have no idea where this mysconception comes from but inform yourself people.
Thank you for saying this. I have been to southern Europe and while I loved my experience and met many wonderful people, the colorism and white supremacist thinking was also real.
I come from a Polish family, I've been raised in Denmark, even Around these parts, a lot of people will assume Spanish people to be dark. I have been to Spain, they are very much white.
i’m latino ( mestizo not afro-latino) and i’m darker than nicki... that’s a dumb point bc nicki is light skinned and every tone is lighter than them. also it was bad lightning that made ariana look darker ... nicki looked darker too it was poor lightning if you find other pictures from the same night she doesn’t look as dark 😘
This can be particularly frustrating when you actually ARE part Native and grew up around Native people but don't look it but now everyone questions you because that used to be "trendy" to say, or like now that fake glasses are a thing everyone asks you if your glasses are real or not even though you're legally blind. :P
Okay and if they wanna be, so fucking what. I'm trying to learn how to not let dumb shit bother me, especially that of which is out of my control, all of you should do the same. Itll make u hate the world a lil less
Katiana Holmes sis, there are a NUMBER of very real problems that cultural appropriation costs us that I wouldn’t be able to express in one UA-cam reply (I’d have to write a book for someone like you to get it). All I can say, however, is that you don’t seem like a dark skinned black woman, so you don’t understand SHIT this lady is saying because these things don’t affect YOU. You don’t have the right to make decisions for what people are and are not entitled to feel if you’ve never been in their shoes. And don’t get me wrong I appreciate the positive outlook you have on life but don’t confuse spreading positivity with denying there are real issues that need fixing. Especially if it doesn’t affect you.
As a biracial woman, this video hit so hard. I grew up hating my curly hair and thinking that my thighs were too fat. I didn't fit the stereotypical white girl pop star look and I hated myself for it. Now, I see more and more girls trying to be mixed race as I'm just learning to embrace mine and it really rubs me the wrong way. 😪
girl I feel you I’m a mixed chick and I’d always feel bad about my thighs and I didn’t like how I was built. My dad is black and my mom is white/pale North African but my dad had to move away for his job so my white mom raised me. She said she liked my features but would pay hundreds to straighten my hair and I wished that I looked European. Now people wanna look like us it’s ridiculous.
Yup. I’m Japanese/Swedish and most people assume I’d be skinny with pale skin. Nope, I’m chubby with pretty thick thighs and a kind of yellowish complexion. I wanted blue eyes and to be skinny like everyone else. When you don’t have all of the “ideal” features from both races all of the sudden people don’t want to be you anymore🙄
Same here. I'm mixed Mestiza Latina and European and I inherited features from both my brown mom and white dad and I honestly always hated being mixed cause I felt like I looked off and ugly having mixed feautures and that I had to just pick a race and now white women like Ariana and Lana Del Rey want to be part time Latinas when it's convinient for them ://
@@rat5597 Girl, you sound dumb she literally said that "they want the look but not the struggle" so like why are you mad when you didn't even read what she said

I honestly would like to know :) sorry if my English is not the best
As someone from italy, yes we are white. We can be very white, but in the summer we get as dark as her or even darker ( i’d say that for the majority). Being white doesnt mean being that one light shade, white is actually quite a big spectrum of colors and we can easily be totally different switching from the polar opposites.
Lol I refuse to believe the North African and Arab. American with Italian roots ? sure but the woman can’t have African and Arabian blood in her veins no matter how small it is like nawwwww
Ariana Grande is the perfect example of how Kylie Jenner used black based trends and culture to financially capitalise off of it 💯 Only difference is that Ariana has talent and her niche is music!
Very true, unfortunately there are still black women that still look up to the Kartrashian. Kylie Jenner became a billionaire simulating blackness only if black people put that much power and money into our own who would the Kartrashian be.
Kay J ...Tyga, a blk man, advice her on changing her ugliness to what she looks like today, in order to gain more, and gain more she did. Everybody who can't make it in the business on their birth- look is automatically biracial looking or ambiguous now. But the original blks, well, we stay Blk.
Jediya Rahim - Danford She’s too busy playing her cards right. They way these industries are nowadays, I really don’t blame her. The spotlight is the biggest target.
Don't forget Lizzo. I would mentioned NAO but she is a British artist so I double any Americans would know here. I am kinda happy that in the UK we see more average black people (be it lighter or darker skinned people) However, there is still colorisim deep rooted in the music industry. Think of Jorja Smith? (I forgot her name) she is good... Don't get me wrong but at the same time people like NAO isn't given the same love and it isn't hard to see why.
Personally I think Ariana grande wants to present herself as generically “ethnic” SHES sometimes presents as blackish sometimes as a Latina and she’s not quick to correct people when they assume incorrectly about her ethnicity
present me one instance where a person guess Ariana's race wrong and she did not correct it. you can't. because she has always been vocal and proud as an italian woman.
This video has aged well and is SO relevant to this day. I really appreciate you sharing your perspective and shedding light on something that is so prevalent in today’s pop culture. I feel like I learned a ton, so THANK YOU!

So Ariana came on the radio and i turned to my boyfriend to ask him what he thought of the whole “Ariana is trying to be black” thing going on and he deadass said “What do you mean? Ariana is black” He deadass thought she was mixed
Exactly, people are still sleeping on her tho. I'm so happy that Ariana got her to open her Sweetener tour concerts to give her some recognition to expand her plataform ♡
Y’all should listen to her talking voice progression lmao. I thought it was so funny. She literally changed accents from Florida white girl to the Bronx blackfish looool.
Honestly. It's an era where we are being pulled in all different directions as people of color. We have the illusion of inclusivity meanwhile the hard truth is... nothing is as it seems.
I dont understand how I ended up on your video! Anyway, as a 66 year old Brit granny I found your video fascinating and very very interesting. You've made some very valid points about body image and how the younger generation (to me everyone is young!) want to mimic other cultures. Thanks x
everyone is copying and in some way culturally appropriating, straightening your hair is trying to be white you could say if you perm your hair you're trying to be black. We need to just live and let others live try to remove the hate. Think long and hard is it affecting you if someone wants to bronze their skin? is the person bothering you that much you can't eat it's preventing you from getting money? have you not realized anyone can be brown italians, mexicans, white people. it's absurd we are so bothered we need to comment about it all the fucken time we will always continue to share our cultures and "culturally appropriate" it's how the world is i do feel racism is an issue but it's not connected to cultural appropriation in my opinion.
@@youtubeconsumer8474 black people can have straight hair, as well as latinx and Asian folks! It's really telling that you think straight hair is limited to white people. It seems like you don't know much about white privilege and cultural appropriation.
The Kardashians are obsessed with black culture,so much that they rather black athletes or black music artist so eventually the whole family would be all mixed up and confused. Kylie want praise for doing her daughter hair, the whole family need to be stopped.
this whole “shes italian!!” argument is so old... first of all, her tan is obviously fake and if you can’t see that then you’re delusional, and even if her tan was natural, that’s not the only thing that shows how she’s gotten into the whole mixed girl aesthetic, its the tan but also the way she speaks, the way she carries herself and many other things. or are gonna tell me that her suddenly starting to use AAVE is also bc shes italian? i can assure that tan italians don’t look mixed
Thing is that I myself wouldn't be saying anything if she actually was tan during her Victorious times. She was PALE. If she actually was a tan italian from the beginning, nobody would've said anything. Now over the years she has just gotten darker and darker and she's giving off that ''popular'' mixed race look.
I posted this above but I'm sorry I'm gonna say it again: The vast majority of Italians look just as white as most other types of whites, SOME Italians are darker, and guess what? They're the minority and have always have been and still are looked down on by other Italians in Italy and called all sorts of awful shit, so it's overwhelmingly disingenuous for 4th gen Italian-Americans who are naturally pale and would NEVER naturally tan That dark to use the darker Italians that their grandparents or great-grandparents would have spat on as a "gotchya" to justify fake tanning themselves 10 shades darker than they would naturally tan. Ariana's tan is ridiculous and obviously not even close to being natural, both her parents look like generic white people that could be from almost anywhere in Europe. End of discussion. Most of my family immigrated to Italy and has been living there for decades, Italians are white and Italians in Italy consider themselves white and are as racist and xenophobic as any other white people. So Americans who are the descendants of Italians and desperately want to distance themselves from whiteness now that it's "trendy" to be ~ambiguous can take a hike. It's transparent and disingenuous as hell. These people have practically nothing to do with Italian culture anyways.
IF all ari did was get a tan, i wouldnt have an issue, but its with everything else too. i dont think its wrong to have a tan even if its dark, but when you are intentionally appropriating culture also, thats where its a problem i think.

@@JaysWife White is not a static term and is used differently in time and place. 100 years ago Italians and Irish were definitely white because race based off phenotypes was a thing. 300 years ago it wasn't. White would be a descriptor of skin color but the American classification (because it was largely American; many European societies had a more national view of race) of race was not a thing and even when it did come into social consciousness not all modern "white" groups were actually considered white. There's actually book called "How the Irish Became White" that's pretty interesting (also Italians were never considered" low class" in anything, I mean this is the homeland of the Roman empire, just saying) We have to remember that race isn't really genetically sound and is a horrible classification of people that makes little genetic sense.

Doesn't it also kind of depend on where you spend your time? If you look at photos of me from two years ago, you could never guess that I used to be Kardashian-like tanned (sometimes darker) as a kid. My parents and I would go on Italy/Spain vacations in the hottest weeks of summer, so there's why. During my last years of school I became incredibly pale (like Korean bb cream pale) because we spent the summers in England and Norway or I spent them inside studying. Now, being at a university with the summer just having started I'm kind of lightly tanned already. If I were Ariana and had the opportunity to go on crazy vacations and yachting I'd perhaps be three shades darker than Nicki Minaj. Oh and by the way I'm European (mostly German with a complicated mixture of Italian, Hungarian, Czech and whatnot on my grandfather's side). That being said, just because you look like wall paint in winter (like I do depending on my summers) or in your childhood doesn't mean you can't tan extremely much naturally.
Let me explain something to you. Ariana is Sicilian and North African which are South Italians and they normally have tan skin and in the summer they tan real quick and easy. She is not trying be black or mixed it's just how their skin is naturally. Plus with the added bronzer to give her skin glow. Also, when has her voice become more "blackish"? That in of itself sounds racist, trying to convey that all black people talk that way. Get this. Black culture is inevitably bleeding into pop culture. There is nothing that can be done about that. After all, the biggest culture is hip hop. So the accent is not "black" its simply "urban". And also, I've only heard her speak that way one time in the ten seconds of that interview the rest of the interview was normal. ALSO she has like 90% black freinds.
ok and she tans and uses makeup to match the tan, that does not mean shes trying to be black or latinx. it just means she has a tanning problem. The difference between Ariana and the Kardashians is that the K claimed they were half black while Ariana has always said she was white/Italian . she even shut a fan down for calling her black

@MAYAH ATCHISON What's funny to me is when everyone started calling out Ariana for copying Mariah, a genuinely mixed/black artist, Ariana started demanding that interviewers were not allowed to ever bring up Mariah in their questions. That made me feel very darkly toward her because Mariah had to break through cultural and racial barriers and was relentlessly criticized for popularizing R&B/hip hop in the 90s. Mariah is just one in a long line of mixed/black artists who faced a lot of negativity as they brought black music into the mainstream. Ariana clearly shows no respect for those who inspire, pioneer, and produce the music that she profits from, a.k.a. black artists.
Same. I'm not big on pop and I'm too old for her stint on Disney, so I really didn't think much about her. When she would come to my attention I genuinely thought she was latina.
I remember wishing I was mixed with lighter skin, and hazel eyes and loose beautiful curls (of course not all mixed people look like this), but that's what was portrayed on social media and that's what was deemed as beautiful... So we need to be careful of how much me idolize a certain group of people or certain features more than others.
Seems like people are never satisfied with what they naturally have. Its a shame that differences in beauty aren’t celebrated in the media. Its difficult being a woman in this age, but im more concerned about the little girls that are growing up in this BS.
V Schwarz She’s lovely and I know about her, but you know the girls on insta are trying to look more like Zoe Saldana than Amara so my point stands. Even in black Latina representation the lighter ones are more favorable even Amara makes that point all the time.
I'm mixed, but I definitely look more white. I'd like to be a bit more tan, but I am NOT going to lay out in the sun and screw those toxic fake tan lotions and potions. I'll just love myself as I am.
As a mixed person (with the whole stereotypical curly hair, light skin, etc.) I really hate the term "mixed girl aesthetic." Many of us had unique struggles in the word trying to come to terms with our identity. There is a lot of privilege that comes with mixed skin, of course. But it's not helpful to be called an "aesthetic" when mixed features are being accepted/celebrated. There is a way to acknowledge the beauty of mixed girls without disparaging or taking any beauty away from darker skinned black girls.
I agree. It's hard to strike a balance without coming across as offensive, I haven't found too many UA-camrs that speak on the subject who can do that. Same thing with the body positive crew disparaging naturally slim/hourglass figures saying it's unattainable or unrealistic when people like this exist and are real/not modified.
What features you think are being celebrated? Ight skin? Curly hair? That's it. I'm light skinned and have curly hair and I'm not mixed. If you have issues with your identity then that's on your parents for not guiding you as a child. Get over yourself.
I just wanna put my two cents in here as a biracial (middle eastern/black) girl. I agree with most of your points but I feel like its often overlooked how biracial people get ostracized from both their communities. While I may be lighter skinned because I'm only half-black and therefore may benefit from society, I at the same time am never accepted as an equal in black communities because of it. I'm just not "black" enough - as if that's something quantifiable. This isn't just a problem in the black community, but in most minority communities. I think it's important that while I may have privilege because of my lighter skin, I also face identity issues that only biracial people can understand.
I’m mixed too I’m half Spanish half Caribbean. The difference is to a certain extent we can push past this impression but I can see that a lot of my “fully black” darker friends can not. Colorism is a minefield but I also try to understand I hold a lot of the cards in it. Even though I’m legit NEVER taken seriously in my black culture bc I’m not instantly “black enough” with most black people but I’m also “too black in others”. I just try and find my lane but I also wish we didn’t have to do that. But the scale of my inconvenience isn’t as large as it could be and I accept that.
Ashley Collins girl I’m an ole Skool biracial woman ... I wish a bih would try my blackness ! I am and always will be black. Born raised and will die that way ! They’ll get an ole Skool spoken word if they even try
Ashley Collins Thank you! I agree 100 ... I disagree completely with her comments and her opinion, and I’m not surprised. I grew up not being excepted from my Latin nor African side . We biracial are always stuck in the middle. I think this is all bull shit , let people be people. What about Latina’s and black girls with blond hair? What!!? No comment on them trying to be white.... whatever! Stop being mad because they’re making more money. Continue to live your life and pay your bills. Hypothetical and this woman is a hater lol ...
I love how Americans move Mediterranean people in and out the "white" box whenever they feel it's convenient to whatever narrative they have. I remember Antonio Banderas talking about how confused he felt about his identity when he went to America for the first time, and again this year with the oscars controversy.
@@FsshoNIA hahaha, I’m so confused of what Americans would call me (I’m Spanish). If they would say like “you are Hispanic not white.” I am Hispanic, but that is a ethnicity not a race!
“The rise of the mixed race aesthetic”👏🏻 yes, thank you for making this point. It’s so disturbing how people fetishize this look and fetishize mixed babies. As someone who dates outside their race, I’ve encountered many men who only want to be with me to satisfy their mixed raced fantasy/aesthetic🙄
I’ve personally never dealt with with this as a black girl from the white men I surround myself with but from my own family. Fetishizing my future kids & them wishing my kids to be light skinned with so called “good hair”
i'm mixed (asian and white) and i have had many full white people say stuff like that to me. had a white girl even say she wanted babies with every race "like it's pokemon, gotta catch em all". i was grossed out to say the least. there is a lot of fetishization and diminishing/glazing over mixed people's struggles while only focusing on the ~aesthetics~ and glamorizing potential looks without people realizing how messed up a lot of us are because of cultural dichotomies and never being truly enough for either side. mixed kids are literally treated like dolls now, be there for looks and bragging rights, but we don't want to hear your issues. also it has been difficult seeing people who are clearly against interracial marriages still and noticing how different they will treat you and your parents when they see you. interracial marriages in the u.s. are still pretty new and there are loads of people alive who were against it then and against it now.
Because they've never been to Italy, Greece, Portugal or Spain and aren't aware of how we can easily tan between our type of skin and the constant exposure to the sun. I do think she has a fake tan but the shade is nothing that she wouldn't be able to achieve as someone with Italian origins.
@@winterain17 Exactly, my dad literally has mid brown skin and curly hair, no one here in greece would think he's african though, she could definitely achieve this type of skin from the sun but that's not healthy so she fake tans
Exactly! Personally I'm see-through pale, but I see so many non mixed people with really tan skin. Even my own parents can get pretty dark with enough sun. It's like they think white people only come from northern europe or ireland.
Zoe Dear being a Latina does not equal black.. her father is clearly of Native and/or European ancestry, you can tell by looking at him. That is not a black man
i personally found it VERY interesting how the foundations for blackfishing were getting laid after things like blackgirlmagic went viral. VERY interesting. black women were getting proud and confident and white girls wanted in on that.
You put the rise of the "mixed aesthetic" in such good words. I'm mixed (black and latina) and lightskinned but I pass as latina . I don't really fit the aesthetic in a lot of ways but it still creeps me out seeing people glorify and uphold light skinned people the way they do and especially the mixed baby accounts on instagram...it makes me ill. I saw receipts of one of them editing dark skinned babies to have "mixed" feautures 😷. It continues to feed into this internal struggle in the black community of dark and brown skins vs light skins. It hurts us all and keeps us separated. I've heard people use dark skin as a whole ass insult and I've heard people say light skinned black folks aren't "really black". This whole "black.....ish" aesthetic is so frustrating.
I'm of Italian/Mexican descent and my Mexican grandmother is obsessed with how fair my skin is. It's crazy how much people care. It's always bothered me.
@@lemonstar1261 yeah it can put you in a place where you feel more like a commodity sometimes, I think the best way to correct the behavior is by being like "hey thanks for the compliment but fair skin isn't everything" or something like that, of course I also understand it's hard to have those conversations with older generations.
As a Dominican mixed with other things, everybody says it’s such a great thing. It’s not! My mom has always admired how light skinned me and my dad are. I never understood until I found a bottle of skin lighter in my moms drawer. And plus, when I say I’m mixed, nobody believes me, and I’m like.. -_-

@PurelyAfrican she's more talented then 90% of these r&b acts..

And besides the whole racialist shit is so american anyways i cannot wait until we stop looking at the world as racial blobs.

this whole “shes italian!!” argument is so old... first of all, her tan is obviously fake and if you can’t see that then you’re delusional, and even if her tan was natural, that’s not the only thing that shows how she’s gotten into the whole mixed girl aesthetic, its the tan but also the way she speaks, the way she carries herself and many other things. or are gonna tell me that her suddenly starting to use AAVE is also bc shes italian? i can assure that tan italians don’t look mixed

Mors Domine plus, it’s about more than just the tan. anyone trying to explain away her whole aesthetic as ‘normal for an italian’ is missing the point
cinnxmon apple when you tan that much and that dark its obvious
ok and she tans and uses makeup to match the tan, that does not mean shes trying to be black or latinx. it just means she has a tanning problem. The difference between Ariana and the Kardashians is that the K claimed they were half black while Ariana has always said she was white/Italian . she even shut a fan down for calling her black

As a white heterosexual male, I greatly enjoy your videos bc you offer perspective, depth and awareness to those in the white community who have the luxury and privilege of not having to view the world through a racial lens. I can guarantee your videos bring awareness to white folks that have none❤️❤️❤️❤️
Is the fact you're white hetero male really that relevant here? Almost like you're bragging.

Ariana is clever af to make POC make her music for her so she can blame them when people call her out lmao
@@evanescence3079 no??? she just likes to work with her best friends. who happen to be black. y'all want these white artists to include and credit minorities in their work, but when they do its a problem and y'all wanna call it out.
Then why doesn't she use her clout to promote her POC friends. She uses them to make hits and then lets their music flop. @@headoverdiors

I'm not big on pop and I'm too old for her stint on Disney, so I really didn't think much about her. When she would come to my attention I genuinely thought she was latina.
Me too!

Narly waves Italians are not Hispanic. Ariana Grande is not Latina, Ariana grande is not mixed, the woman is white.
I remember staring at the mirror after scrolling down Instagram and wishing I was mixed it really affects ur mindset
It really does i wish i was a afro latina im a latina myself
I remember wishing I was mixed with lighter skin, and hazel eyes and loose beautiful curls (of course not all mixed people look like this), but that's what was portrayed on social media and that's what was deemed as beautiful... So we need to be careful of how much me idolize a certain group of people or certain features more than others.
it only affects you if you're weak minded

Seems like people are never satisfied with what they naturally have. Its a shame that differences in beauty aren’t celebrated in the media. Its difficult being a woman in this age, but im more concerned about the little girls that are growing up in this BS.

Do you know who Amara La Negra is? She's a Black Latina and she has very dark beautiful skin, not all black Latinas look like Cardi B

Yes
ABSOLUTELY!!
You misunderstood her point. People are reducing mixed race women
What features you think are being celebrated? Ight skin? Curly hair? That's it. I'm light skinned and have curly hair and I'm not mixed. If you have issues with your identity then that's on your parents for not guiding you as a child. Get over yourself.
A lot of girls want to be frappucinó grandé
White with a little bit of pumpkin spice

I just wanna put my two cents in here as a biracial (middle eastern/black) girl. I agree with most of your points but I feel like its often overlooked how biracial people get ostracized from both their communities. While I may be lighter skinned because I'm only half-black and therefore may benefit from society, I at the same time am never accepted as an equal in black communities because of it. I'm just not "black" enough - as if that's something quantifiable. This isn't just a problem in the black community, but in most minority communities. I think it's important that while I may have privilege because of my lighter skin, I also face identity issues that only biracial people can understand.
Girl I totally agree with you I'm black and Norwegian and I'm just stuck on the side lines

Thank you!
Antonio is from Spain
@@ok-je1jf which anywhere on the planet except for the us would classify you as white
I don't mean you as in literally you but more in a sense of anyone
In America if your ethnic background is European, you're white. Period.
I don't get why americans keep saying she looks black or mixed with that tan, she looks mediterranean at best.
Literally just thinking this, she just looks like a tan Italian to me.
But Ariana Grande has fake spray tan on. It's not her natural tan.

i personally found it VERY interesting how the foundations for blackfishing were getting laid after things like blackgirlmagic went viral. VERY interesting. black women were getting proud and confident and white girls wanted in on that.
They still want in on it 😭
You put the rise of the "mixed aesthetic" in such good words.
I feel the exact same way but I’m black and white
As a Dominican mixed with other things, everybody says it’s such a great thing. It’s not! My mom has always admired how light skinned me and my dad are. I never understood until I found a bottle of skin lighter in my moms drawer. And plus, when I say I’m mixed, nobody believes me, and I’m like.. -_-
I love the mixed pages on IG but I dont think we should be gloried over any other race or colour. I love the dark skin and melanin pages too!

Damn all latinos DON'T look the same please stop thinking that all are short, dark skinned cause we are so diverse, remember all Latin Americans are the results of Spanish conquerors and the native people of America (Chile, Perú, Honduras, Colombia etc) we are mixed, we are mestizos (at least a 80% in this countries)
