This was the peak of my childhood, I'm not into wrestling much anymore but I look back and cherish these times. Idolizing stone cold and the rock, waiting for raw every Monday night with my dad Solid core memories.
I watched a random ep of Raw from 98/99 the other month that was airing on the Network and I was glued I couldn't miss one segment it was awesome and so was the Attitude Era wrestling just isn't the same these days and never will be again
@ when I go back and watch stuff from the era, I shake my head and think, “ I can’t believe they got away with that”, but I still enjoy it as much as I did back then
There’s some good reasons for and against an attitude era reboot. The one main reason against it is match length and quality. If you weren’t in the main event or maybe semi main event, you had to go out there and try to tell a story (a decent story or any kind of story for that matter) in 2-4 minutes. Go back and look at how short and not entertaining a lot of the mid card or lower card matches were during the attitude era. But I did always feel like the Monday night wars and WWF programming during the attitude era was 100% must see tv. Part of that probably had to do with the internet not being what it is today with the ability to watch every WWE show at the snap of your fingers
1997 was WWF's best year and Stone Cold's character was simply riding the high that 1997 Austin established. His promos fell off as soon as 1998 but people didn't notice yet. The Rock had his best promo year in 1998 but also fell off as soon as he made it to the top. They both left or changed their character's before anyone noticed how stale & complacent they already were. If they did, "ride the high," they would have fallen off forever.
I'm nearly 40 and was a huge wrestling fan for most of my life. I don't watch wrestling anymore as current wrestling doesn't appeal to me. I find it way too silly and not very entertaining. I would be more embarrassed to tell people I was a wrestling fan today than I would be of telling them I was a fan during the Attitude Era.
Which is ironic because people today mock the Attitude Era because of how over the top and scandalous it was. Hell, there's a TON of shit from the Attitude Era that I would not show people from my non-wrestling fan circles because a good chunk of it has not aged well.
Offended? If it doesn’t involve my children, mother or family in general I don’t get offended. It’s a TV show from a different time and times have changed. Period.
I really wish people would stop making the “Austin 3:16 didn’t instantly make a difference” argument with Steve. One, I don’t think anyone is that impressionable to think that the guy was selling out box offices overnight. But even there, he co-headlined a big 4 PPV within 6 months of the promo (a match that, technically due to the taping schedule, they actually began building on the Raw after KOTR 96). Particularly given the way shows were structured at the time, what do people expect.
@@deansheets Not at all. The attitude era burst into life off the back of attaching itself to Mike Tyson's notoriousness. Modern day Wwe hasn't got any such affiliation.
The true magic of the Attitude era is that the stories were long term and they clicked with the fans. It's not just sex and violence, and shock value. There is a story behind it. This is why subsequent eras failed.
Why WCW Monday Night Nitro Has A Big Influence that can still be felt today 23 years after It Died Watch some parts of TNA and the entirety AEW and tell me Eric Bischoff didn't shake things up In 1995 he did and other promotions In the future followed his model
There’s a difference between actually being “offended” and looking back on something and realizing that in hindsight, yeah, that was kind of dumb. Things like “Who Let The Dogs Out”, Jnco jeans with legs so wide you could park a small prop plane inside, and Mae Young giving birth to a hand. All three of those things can be looked back on with rolling eyes and a “WTF were we thinking?”. They’re not going to be returning, but I don’t think anyone is offended by them.
Man I sat down ready to play some Fifa and enjoy hearing Simon talk about the attitude era. Immediately starts talking about being offended. Whatculture is unwatchable now.
SCSA truly is the greatest superstar/name in pro wrestling/sports entertainment ever. He surpassed Hogan, The Rock was always number 2 (1b at BEST), Cena was necessary to carry it through that “eh” era for such a long stint, which I will always respect, and Roman has really came into his own but still hasn’t even surpassed Cena in reality, as far as “crossing over” while still being an active wrestler is concerned. Austin was everything, short and sweet run, but can’t be topped.
Nobody speaks truth online. The online wrestling community is a bigger work than the actual wrestling business. Wrestling TV shows get over like every other TV show, by being good tv shows. The attitude era was a good tv show, that's why it was successful. Other eras less so, that's why the attitude era is held in such high regard. Talent at the top of the card all operating at their best backed up by squads of reserves behind them all doing their career best too.
Awesome video as always. Quick note @31:30 you mention Austin’s first title run lasted 5 months and that’s inaccurate. His first title run actually only lasted 3 months as he lost the title to Kane at the King of The Ring that year.
Random, but Alexa did really well to recover as much as possible what was that absolute shit show of an idea of that "This is Your Life" bullshit. I don't even want to imagine how absolutely horrendous it would have been if it would have been any of the other women doing it.
I started watching WWE at the tail end of the Attitude Era. At the time it was fun for what it was. But I can’t really say I am wanting to see it come back today. I just rather not listen to the people that are too soft and over sensitive to literally everything
To be fair; there's a ton of stuff from the Attitude Era that has not aged well. Matches that sucked because they were too short or had no psychology to it, storylines that made no sense or had no payoff, or angles that have aged very badly and nowadays are embarrassing to watch. So for every memorable or iconic moment, there are two or three moments that aged very badly.
I started watching WWE (WWF back then) in the summer of 1999 during the Attitude Era when I was a kid (at the age of 8), when SmackDown! made its premiere on UPN. It was awesome at that time.
I think perhaps instead you should recognize things being considered "offensive" in hindsight has nothing to do with being a "PC baby" and everything to do with time passing. Things are acceptable at a societal level at one time, then they aren't later. It's ok for things to change, dude.

The lead up to the attitude era was infinitely better than the actual attitude era. Anti-American Hart Foundation is the best

Imagine a skit where Kane and ddp are doing yoga together & Kane actually becomes one with peace. They could have become tag team peace champions
Seems like this is a jumbled up history of Stone Cold
Because the attitude era WAS Stone Cold son. And that’s the bottom line
