  • I teach you how to properly inspect your Harley shifter shaft, shifter arm, splines, and shifter linkage. This Harley shifter system has had problems for years and it has many points of failure. If this Harley shifter shaft or system fails it can leave you stranded. I show you what to look for and how to repair it if it is already faulty.

Last night riding 2 W NJ my ‘08 FLHR RKing remained stuck in 6 gear . Had to ride it in 6th. Noticed was the loose Shift arms. the toe shift was loose and from the shift shaft , same as the rear shift pedal.Did not get stuck, made home by shift manually with my L hand. Time to bring Baby Girl 2 Hannums for a good look over and repair. This problem is wi’ older models as well as ‘14’s and up.STUCK IN 1,2 3rd.And Hannums’s is shut down due to the bug. Oh well.

2014 Limited. Purchased from dealership in July epoch failure 60 miles from the nearest city in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. $336.00 tow, to city with auto parts store but no motorcycle shop. 2 hours later a crusty biker drove up looked at me trying to cobble together a solution, told me he would return, 10 minutes later he showed up with all the parts i needed, and said " we don't leave bikers stranded, mail me back the parts when you get home". Got home went to Harley dealership bought brand new parts and $100.00 gift card and sent them to my guardian angel.

Had the same issue On my 2014 ultra Limited while on my way to a Patriot Guard mission for a fallen hero. My plan was to hand shift to get there and deal with it later. I was about 5 miles from where i needed to be. Fortunately a Good Samaritan handy man was stood up for an appointment at the residence I stopped in front of. He graciously not only took me to a dealership for parts but hung around to make sure she was fixed. Refused to accept anything for his time and just asked to pay it forward. My kind of guy.

As I was at the last exit before home from a 4800+ trip, I lost the linkage. Fortunately I was in third gear and was able to limp the last 5 miles home. The bike is im the shop now for that and a couple of other things. I told my husband that I really didn't look at it close enough to see what part of it failed and truth is I have never looked at it well enough to know how it all went together. Now I know and probably could have fixed it myself with your excellent, well explained video! You are the best!!! PS I'm a female, 77 years old and I still plan on riding until I can't!!

If this happens to you on the road (and you should always have your travel tool kit) flip the shaft backwards and use the good splines under your heel toe shifters for the linkage and stick your toe shifter on the damage splines. The splines on the outward side don't have any play like the linkage side and won't wear, the shifter level clamp is wider and can hold the damaged splines without moving and get you to a garage. I was 50 miles from home with no open Harley when mine failed, I got her home without issue doing just this.

I have had 3 POS Harley Davidson's in my day. 1993, 1998, 2005 and ALL have had this SAME PROBLEM!! Now I pull my inner primary and get the shift link tack welded to the shifter shaft and the problem is resolved. Back in the day this shaft was squared in lieu of splined! ! also have my heal and toe shifter welded. An elephant can shift my motorcycle and not damage it. I'm so sick of having to modify and strengthen my shit due to piss poor design by the Motor Company! I hope Indian motorcycle runs this sorry ass Company into bankruptcy as they've managed to get PLENTY of my money over the past 35 years of ownership, Sorry for the rant but THEY TOTALLY SUCK!

@@RyanUrlacher anything with the M8 Mr HD made getting to the shifter shaft bolt and transmission shaft bolt a breeze.Plus the M8 motor is so much smoother especially at idle. Your Streetglide like mine vibrates a hell of a lot more hence these and other bolts work loose . Plus our bolts are a BITCH to get to. Go to any HD dealer with pre M8 motors and wiggle the shifter shaft linkage. I bet most of them are loose!😎

2015 Road Glide Special, 21K miles. Just broke my third one. Inside part of shaft. Next to Mexico Border!! Took out the set screw push the shaft inward, to get that part of the spline to connect, wrapped it with wire on the inside to hold it in, shifted as seldom as possible, as gentle as possible with my boot heal held against the shift lever to make sure it stayed in as far as possible and made back to phoenix. I'm replacing everything with high end stuff after watching the video. Been riding for years, had three Harleys including a 09 Road glide with 40K, never any issues like this. 3 Times in 21K!! WTF!

I think the problem is having a heel shifter to begin with. Using your heel probably creates too much force overtime on on the potential failure points. I just stick with the toe shifter because you can be more delicate & precise.

Your calling this a Harley part failing, I feel this is caused from not maintaining your bike, if the bolts were kept tight (maintained) it couldn’t strip the spline. If you had road the Harley of the 70’s wrenching or keeping things tight was something everyone did and should still do to not have these issues that you call “ Harley’s faulty parts”
People just want to ride their bikes now and complain if you have to work on it!

    • @RyanUrlacher
      @RyanUrlacher  4 роки тому

Actually it has nothing to do with keeping the bolt tight. That certainly helps it last, but the splines will still wear out even with the bolt tight. It's a defect in the product. Seen it many times. Thanks for watching.

The shaft is made to wear out. So that it’s replaced before the splines inside wear and you have to tear it apart. If it wears out while you’re on the road a quick “temp” fix is to take a beer (or coke ) can ,rip a small piece of Metal off, tightly wrap around shaft ,slide lever on and tighten down.

I have a 2014 Harley. Davidson, limited. Driving down the road shaft and shifter completely stopped. It was sloppy. I thought the bolts were loose nope. Head to go home, shifting with my hand down the freeway stuck in a traffic jam. Just lovely but I repaired it after watching your video. You guys rock.

This happened to my 2014 Ultra Limited at about 40K miles. After replacing with a new shaft (because the splines were worn), I switched places with the toe and heel shifters because the splines on the inside of the toe shifter were also worn. Can't do this type of position swap with my '19 Limited because the shifter were changed when the M8 models rolled out. Thanks for the reminder to check torque values.

I just picked up a 2017 Iron 883. Bike runs great and does everything I need for Intown use. Was watching this video on UA-cam and went and checked my shift lever. It was Loose as hell and already working its way off. Probably would have fallen off on my next ride and I would have been stranded. Thank you and I appreciate that you're looking out for your fellow Riders

Mine popped off on the way home from work last week. I was able to repair on the road side. I then bought a higher grade bolt added blue loctite to the threads and anti seize to the washer base and torqued the crap out of it. Best part is we just returned from a 3600 mile trip without any problems.

Yep. Returning home to NY from Kentucky, in the middle of Pennsylvania, my 2015 Roadglide with 1700 miles just failed to shift. No warning, just stuck in 4th gear. Pulled into a Quick Fill and looked bike over. My toe/heel shifter lever was flopping around and thought to myself, "this can't be good." and I was right! Called AAA, waited 3 hours for the flat bed tow truck, me and the wife rode with the driver 92 miles to the Harley shop. Luckily they were open until 7pm, we got there at 5:30. The shop had to pirate the parts off an existing bike, 1/2 hour later we were on our way. Hats off to "Larry's Harley Davidson" in Pennsylvania on Rt.6 , they really helped us out. Hope this helps anyone in this situation.

Happened twice on my 2015 Road King. Used a zip tie to offset the spline and let it grab the teeth an 1/8" over, since the teeth didn't get worn where they cover the groove. Got us 1500 miles home from the Keys.

Ok so my brother in law s 2003 Ultra Classic/ him and my sister going around a bend he goes to shift and the WHOLE shifter assembly was missing!!!! The shaft X2 shifter leavers the lot the little bolt at the back of the shaft had come out that holds the shaft ,shift leavers through the casting but thankfully a biker in his truck and his old lady saw it on the road and handed it back! I have a 2014 Streetglide Shrine , I like the one shift leaver so took the back heel shifter off( I was also told people bangng down hard on the rear shifter can strip out the shaft splines) I digress. My problem was the transmission shaft /leaver the one off of the gearbox right side looking at the bike) The bolt is stuck way down to where you can hardly see it ( something that HD has rectified with the M8 motor. I asked a HD mechanic to check how tight the Allen bolt was. Well this turd goes in with a Allen wrenches with a ball on the end( a no no ) and rounds the hole in the bolt out!!!😠. I had to take it to a HD master mechanic who by a miracle got the bolt out and replaced it . If he hadn't of gotten the bolt out the whole primary would have had to come off just to get to the transmission Leaver bolt with a bill for labour you wouldn't want to know. SO CHECK the Shifter shaft bolts AND the TRANSMISSION LEAVER bolt that being the more expensive to replace if you strip the shaft out !

(2011 FLHTC) Happened to me on the Kancamagus Highway in the White Mountains NH. Sucked. Luckily I had some basic tools in my saddlebag to hold the spline (barely) back together into the shifter arm, then we putted over to a nearby Harley dealer. Installing a new shift linkage now as well.

Happened to me on my 2005 ultra classic, shifter arm bolt came loose. i was about 30 miles from home, hand shifted into second gear and took a slow ride home, best fix for this is to use a longer bolt with a nylock on the other side to keep it in position so the bolt doesnt work itself out

This happened to my son's 2012 street glide and my brothers 2011 limited, I didn't have this problem on my 2013 Ultra Classic because I was warned about witch bolts to check everytime I do my service but I did have the bushings on the primary housing where the shaft goes through wear out witch made the whole shifter assembly to rattle really bad but that's an easy fix if you have the right tool to change the two $2 bearings, I think the bearing puller cost me about $60 takes about 10 minutes to fix that problem

Yes we had the same thing on my wife's 2013 street glide. I had replaced the bolt from the first frailer this did not fix the problem, just moved it down the road for about one year. Yesterday about 200 miles from home it failed again. I got it back together then fell off 17 miles from home.... Got it back on with a GOOD CROSS TREAD no Loctite, made it home with minimal shifting... Loose as a Goose! all of the parts are on the ground next step is to call HD for parts availability. Thanks for the VID.

I ditched the heel shifter, which I think makes this problem worse. I also replaced the crappy ball and socket connectors with heim joints. The rear linkage is a real pain if it wears. You need to remove the primary to gain clearance. I went with a Beueller's Better Lever. which has a bolt on both sides rather than just one pinch bolt. Real quality product that has served me well. My bike is an 04.

Henry Ford said it best you'll never get rich selling cars but you will get rich selling car parts! Vocabulary term for this is planned obsolescence. I have a 2015 street glide cvo and it has happened a few times. Bought it in 2019 with 3200 miles and is now sitting with almost 75000. Having had this problem with my last street glide ( 2013) i carried bailing wire ( quick fix) moved from that to a long bolt ( replaced the short one at the top of the arm connecting the linkage) set up to just swap because in my experience it seems that its always the spline shaft that fails! So much so that I have now just put a spare in my bag so when it dose fail again I will use the bolt setup to get me too where im going without much downtime and replace the shaft when I get there! There is a bushing inside that iner primary case as well that may be the reason for slop in the system and even with new parts will cause an accelerated failure!

Great heads up Ryan, 2009 Street Glide I check it at ever oil change and when taking a trip I always carry a spare linkage arm. You never know! Additionally when taking off the shifter arms make a little mark wth a Sharpie on the shaft so you know where it was located when reinstalling.

I have stumbled upon this video after dealing with not one, but two failures of the same sort.
this was preceded by two other failures of just the shifter shaft.
allow me to get into some detail.
I bought a first edition FLXH streetglide in late 2005 after convincing Bill Davidson at LOVE RIDE that the murdered out cholo bikes was the next thing harley should do.
I always wanted a bagger but couldn't deal with the "shriner" look.
so after Bill and myself wandered around the staging area, Robert Patrick was in our group as well, I told Bill emphatically that if he/they atarted reducing the chrome on baggers, I would buy the first one in SD. Bill really dug the murdered-out, smoothed-out baggers that were all over the event.
sure enough, a few years later, my limited edition FATBOY was stolen and as my soul recovered, the dealer called and said, "hey, the bike you wanted, it's here."
so, flush with the insurance pay-off for the limited edition FATBOY I went to check it out.
well, damn if they didn't nail it. in 2005, the 2006 streetglide first-edition was so far away from the "shriner" look, I fell in love.
after ahout 8 years, in 2013, I was on my way back from Coachella to SD, the shifter shaft just broke off. clean break near the left side of the shaft. I managed to stop the actual shifters from spinning off into the desert near scissors crossing west of Borrego.
after a few minutes on the side of the road is was obvious it wasn't repairable.
so I taught my 15 year old daughter (passenger) how to use the clutch. after a few mins, she nailed it and off we went, I would lean hard into the tank, she would stand on the pegs, grab the clutch, pull it in, and I would reach down, and hand shift the bike all the way up the grade to julian. at 4,200 ft and tons of twisties.
in julian we called a tow-truck, had it repaired at the dealer then it happened again about 5 years later. not a spline issue at all. just a staight break.
only with my daughter handling the clutching duties was it easier to get the bike back to the dealer for parts and repair.
since then, i've had two issues with the splines going bad.. I think it''s a shifter shaft issue from 2005/6 they must have changed the design and now it doesn't do a clean break, it was weak metal and the splines are rendered useless.
last week, spline issues, both shifters landed on the freeway and are gone forever. so two spline issues, two shifter shaft issues. total, about $500 in parts, time and repairs.
I await a rear extended heel shifter, due to arrive next week and the bike has over 102,000 miles on it as I type. oh, the first engine went into internal meltdown at 66,000 miles.
i'm hope it makes in to 130,000 miles.
any questions? hit me back. btw in 2006, the touring engines were 88s..... imagine that.
