    If you're still around, I found this six years later and am going to do the same to my 2016 FLTRU Road Glide Ultra. Excellent video. The only thing I would like to do differently is a different taillight / license plate to have the license plate under the light. Thanks for showing all the details.

    I learned a lot from this video. I appreciate your explanations - and the fact you didn't make it look overly simple nor overly difficult ... you showed small "problems" and also your thought process with some trials & errors re: how you overcame them. I definitely have confidence that I can do this install.
    As a side note, my local H-D dealer's labor rate is $119/hr. H-D lists the install time as 2.5 hours in the instructions (PDF downloadable at the H-D store under "More Info" below this parts listing). However, my dealer wants $416.50 to install this. When I questioned the Service Writer, he stated "our Service Manager has a list of prices for parts installations and that's what we have to go by [quote]". I replied, "so this is the Service Manager's decision, not the actual labor time". He quickly back-tracked, asked where I got the 2.5 hour install time (he asked "what book did you pull that labor time from?"), and he stated "oh, this definitely takes *A LOT* longer than 2.5 hours to install". Strange, because on my previous new H-D purchase I added this conversion kit into the sale & delivery set-up - and the total installation (including other add-ons I rolled into the new purchase) took no more than 3-hours to install (I know b/c I waited).
    Anyway, I love my Harley-Davidson but IMO - dealers price gouge too much (as does Harley-Davidson on the price of their accessories).
    Again, job well done with this installation video!

    • @joeljasper3622
      @joeljasper3622  4 роки тому +2

      Thanks for the comments, Troy. I don’t believe it took me but about 3 hours to do the install and I was doing this for the first time and filming. So, the book has to be padded somewhat. I hate that some dealers pad it even more. Take your time and you shouldn’t have any problems. Then, use the $416 for another upgrade.

    As everyone else said, great video. I had this kit on my 2014. I paid almost $500 for the dealer to do it. After watching this I'm going to try it on my 2018. When the tourpack was off I would fold the unused wires back under the seat,but I didn't have the driver backrest. Also, did i see a wire for a Sena Freewire. I was able to install mine to run into the compartment in the fairing from the back of the head unit. This eliminated any exposed wires. If you're interested I can give you the parts you'll need and a quick explanation of the install. Again, great video.

    • @joeljasper3622
      @joeljasper3622  6 років тому +1

      HappyJack, Thank you for your compliments. I wrap the wires under the seat as well. They’ll wrap around the rider backrest mount with no problem. I would be interested in the part number to move the Sena Freewire. I really don’t like the wire running from the console to the handle bars.

    • @ridingnewengland3192
      @ridingnewengland3192 6 років тому

      J J here is the part you will need. It adds an additional 7 pin socket to the bike.
      mstore.harley-davidson.com/store/boom%21-audio-music---comm-kit
      Remove the outer (front fairing) to expose the back of the head unit. There should be a plugged up white wire harness attached to the top of the stereo. Just plug this in and you have an additional 7 pin. It's up to you how you want to run it. I plugged in the sena wire, secured it with some electrical tape then ran the Sena wire into the little glove box on my Limited. I had to drill a hole about the size of a dime in the back of the little compartment to run the wire. You could theoretically also run power to the Freewire and leave it in the fairing. It was fairly simple.

    Very informative. Will note that HD change a couple of things on the recent kit that was a little frustrating. The bag lights didn’t do the left and right ID nor male or female difference. So I had to hook it up and determine left and right connections. Plus they now don’t include the antenna kit. Sold separately of course for 80 dollars.

    I wanted to post a follow-up comment: I installed my detachable kit today ... and I could NOT have done this without your video! H-D's instructions, 4 sets for the different components, lacked detail that you were able to provide with the video (and the grammatical errors at times are atrocious - it was obviously translated from a foreign language). I literally played your video on my laptop on the garage floor as I installed the kit (I did change the order from your video as I installed the lights last). The install took me all day - but it wasn't a continuous install (I had to take my dog to the vet, among other chores & distractions).
    This one thing baffled me for well over hour: the detachable rack/tour-pak support is narrower than the OEM ... specifically, the OEM rack is 11 1/8" wide whereas the rack in the kit is 10" wide. And just as in your video, the front of [my] rack clips/mounts onto the spacers - not onto the rubber coated "Docking Point" hardware! To me it seems obvious the rack *should* mount onto the docking point - why would it be called a docking point if it didn't, why bother to ensure the marks on the front docking points are "horizontal", and the docking point hardware is slightly oblong so it can be rotated to get the right, tight & secure fit that is needed. For anyone wondering: yes, I did order the right kit/part number for my FLHTK. The box (within the kit) that contained the rack is labeled "T-Pak MTG Rack, Chrome P/N: 53000221". If you find that part number (for the rack, not the kit) on H-D's web site, that part is *not* compatible with the FLHTK. I telephoned my H-D dealer but it was closed due to the pandemic (and I had already opened-up everything, sorted the parts and started the install - so I continued). But I spent well over an hour studying this, changing the order of the docking points, spacers, washers ... and I guess as they say, you just can't put a square peg into a round hole. Nothing I did got me to the point where the rack mounted onto the front docking point. So all of this leads to a question: "why" - why is the rack in this kit narrower - but more importantly why doesn't it mount on the front "docking point" hardware? Am I not getting it, doing something wrong, or just over-thinking it? Though you mounted & installed yours the same way, you didn't question this in your install demo.
    I probably spent 1/3 or more of my install time on the wiring: routing, rerouting, then rerouting again. I must have cut off a dozen wire ties as I tried different methods (I'm a perfectionist and I wanted to hide it as much as possible). So combine the wiring trials and my quandary re: mounting the rack on the spacers & not the docking points hardware - and you can easily see why it took me so long to complete the install. But that's okay ... I saved $416.50 from what my local H-D dealer wanted (another dealer 50-miles way wanted $440 for installation). I can now apply the savings towards my dog's surgery - a much more worthy cause - and better than giving even more money to H-D.
    In summary for an average guy - a non-mechanic but someone who does basic DIY jobs: do not be afraid to do this yourself. With this video demo (you'll only need H-Ds instructions to ensure you have all of the required parts), it's all fairly easy ... the detachable hardware, the license plate relocation, the antenna relocation and even the lights. I never became frustrated and I never once felt the install was beyond me or over-my-head. I frankly never lost my confidence. Believe me, this should not be a $400+ install ... Harley dealers are insane.

      troyvalentinoriedel - Thank you so much for taking the time to compliment my video and recapping your experience. Very few projects have I ever undertaken that worked without any setbacks or sidesteps. Heck, I just got through flushing my clutch fluid. Who would ever thought that you would have to remove the right floor board, the right side muffler, and loosen the exhaust all the way to the head just to remove the clutch actuator cover to bleed the system. Why? Because there is not enough clearance between the exhaust and the actuator to get the cover off. It only took me 20 minutes to actually flush the fluid. But it took a couple of hours to get the cover off. I fixed that little problem for good though. I took a Dremmel tool and ground down the bottom of the cover just enough so it will clear the actuator bottom bolts the next time I need to flush the system. I would have made a video of that, but I don’t think my behavior would have been appropriate for public consumption. Ride safe!

    Very methodical and precise...good job. I must have missed your solution to obscuring the wires with the tour pack removed. I hope you discovered a better way of hiding them than to lay them to the side of the seat.

    • @joeljasper3622
      @joeljasper3622  7 років тому +1

      John, I actually figured that one out after I made the video. I found they will store well under the seat. It helps if you purchase an $18 seat finger screw. That way you don't have to worry with needing a screwdriver each time you need to get under the seat.

    • @johns2860

      J J Thanks Joel. I was at the shop today talking to them about this removable tour pack hardware and a customer chimed in with an interesting comment. He said and I agreed that on the fixed tour pack bracket, connection wires accessed through the flapped slot on the pillion seat are contained keeping them from touching the fender but the detachable bracket/hardware does not have this and the wires can fall down onto the fender when tucked into the same pillion slot. Did you notice this and if so, how did you solve it? Thanks again. BTW, the $18 quick screw is a good solution saving time and potential to scratch the fender.

    • @joeljasper3622
      @joeljasper3622  7 років тому

      John, When I removed my tour pack, the wires were resting on the fender. I did notice a clip on two of the cables but the plastic push pin was connected to the clip and had never been inserted into any slot. I actually had a scuff mark that I buffed out. Then I put a couple wax layers on it to help protect it in the future. The tour pack hasn't been back on since I removed it. I'll take another look at it and get back with you the next time I put the pack back on. Thank you for your compliments and comments.

    I was going to add before fumbled with the 'like' button - Yes, I agree, very good video - helpful. My dealer recommended the in fairing antenna as when the stock one is relocated to down below and you put the tour-pak back on, the antenna whips against the pak and marks it. Its a big and/or expensive job to put the antenna in the fairing. We found a 12” Kuryakyn Billet Antenna groved, chrome, back and chrome, black and aluminum, that sits well below the tour pak when it is back on and is USD $49.49 (more for us up here in Canada). I’m about to install it, it seems it’ll work well. p/n’s 862,863,864.

    • @joeljasper3622
      @joeljasper3622  5 років тому

      Colin Lester, thank you for your compliment. I did install an in fairing antenna and remove the whip from the bike. I started a video on that install but the video file was corrupted. The hidden antenna works well as it is powered, but I have seen instances where the signal will get partially blocked based on the terrain. But that can happen with any signal. It’s just amplified a little with the hidden antenna. Also, the adhesive 3-M tie clips are too thick for the outter fairing so I used electrical tape to hold the antenna wires in place

      Hi JJ, your better than I mechanically, I'd say. I'm one of those probably fairly unusual ones who does not listen to music a lot on my bike or in the car - I find it distracting. I did want to still have access to radio though and especially the weather reports. My bike is only a few weeks old ('18 Road Glide Ultra) so I haven't put on the the 12'' antenna yet but I'm sure it will be sufficient.

      It came with the kit. However, Custom Dynamics has now come out with a relocation bracket and tail light kit for the touring bikes that the tag is below the light. I’ll be installing that soon. I never really liked the tag above the light as it reduces the options for installing a luggage rack in place of the tour pac. The tag sticks up to high for some of the racks.

    I already had the docking hardware from a previous Road King so I just bought the license plate bracket part# 67900167 and was done. I already had the filler lights which I think look better and fill the holes up on the bike. I don't know why Harley doesn't include these in the kit instead of ones that stick to the bags, because when you're done you still have holes in the rear. I don't care about radio so just remove the antenna. When I want the tour pack back on I will bolt it on so I don't get wobble or loose fitting like I hear so many do especially when they buy aftermarket detachable brackets. Nonetheless, this was an awesome video, great job.

      Thanks, zthang. I would agree that the Custom Dynamics LED fillers would be a nice option. I haven’t had any problems with the tour pack being loose and vibrating. The bushings can be adjusted so much so as to make it difficult to even remove the tour pack. I’ve had to adjust them a couple of times since the install. Thanks for the compliments.

    Nice instructional video, thanks. I just put the kit on my 2017 Ultra Limited. Although similar, the kit is different from the one for the RK. I struggled with the bag wiring as well but did something a little bit different. The Ultra kit I got has totally different connectors and they are identical so it's trial and error for left and right. Additionally, the module for the lights is very different, thinner with no rubber clip on, and has 4 connectors of which only 3 are used. There is no explanation of what the 4th is and I thought you might know. I suspect it's to connect the tour pack lights when attached along with the new bag lights. I followed the original instructions but had to remove the adhesive tie downs once I discovered making the connection was not possible. I installed new ones when I rerouted the wires for my installation. I also used VViViD 3M Clear Paint Protection Vinyl Film on areas I felt vibration might be an issue with regards to paint damage. There is no antenna relocation bracket for my bike so I installed a hidden one. I wish I could send you some pictures. Do you know how much the tour pack and bracket weigh?

    • @joeljasper3622
      @joeljasper3622  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks for the compliment. Not sure what changes they may have made to the kit since I made the video. I would believe your suspicions are correct as to the wiring differences. Good call on the 3M tape. I installed a piece after I reinstalled the tour pack as the wiring scuffed the paint right behind the seat. I was able to buff it out and then installed the tape. I did weight the tour pack, and I remember it being 47lbs empty.

      @@joeljasper3622 Thanks for the response. I have been getting all sorts of answers about the weight but around 50 pounds is what it felt like to me. I tie wrapped all the cables securely to the frame under the seat so the rear fender is not exposed to any vibrating connectors or wires. All that will need to be undone when the tour pack is installed and I need to make the necessary connections. Then I will decide whether to use the 3M tape or build a shelf like others have described to support the cables. I do miss the speakers in the tour pack and am thinking about getting speaker tops for the bags. Any tips for that?

  • @RoadieWingZZ
    @RoadieWingZZ 3 роки тому +2

    Great video, but there’s a better way to align the saddle bag lights. Simple tape a popsicle or other 1/8” thick material across the top of the light housing, THEN mount the light with the bag lid securely closed. You’re primarily making sure the light is level with the lid and securing the outer corners. After the light corners are securely in place, open the lid, remove the spacer material and press the saddle bag firmly against the back of the light housing all the way across. Now the light will be perfectly spaced relative to the lid. Trying to eyeball and guestimate the position with the lid unfastened is a guaranteed recipe for misalignment and frustration. Ask me how I know…🤣
