First wanna say thank you to Ryan and team for an excellent video. I’m only here because I stopped to see if I could help a guy on an older super/wide glide who was broke down in a parking lot today. His final drive belt was broken in half. Nothing I could help him with. I just wanted to see how much of a bastard job this was. Certainly not a side of the road job. Confirms my feeling that Harley built it’s best bike starting in 1952, the Model K. It was then modified in 1957 and renamed the Sportster. 2022 is the 70th anniversary of this bike, still in continuous production, 71 YEARS ! The first Harley with full suspension. The first Harley with foot shifting. And, you can replace the final drive belt on the side of the road, with minimal tools, if you are ever forced to ( my father kept a spare belt with him on his many cross-country road trips, just in case, so he wouldn’t get stranded on his Sportster, which he never had a breakdown on, btw ). I personally have ridden over 800 miles in one day ( 1700 miles in 3 days total ) on a Sportster with no issues to bike or rider. Model K / Sportster, greatest Harley of all time, that’s why it is still with us today.
Wow an Awesome in depth video. Very informative. I just got an 1985 FXR and did not notice it needs a belt. The shop said about $600. I am on a real low budget. This video sure helped me out. Thank you so much.

Great video!! I'm new to the Harley family after years of Metric bikes. Your videos have taught me a lot on how to do maintenance on my bike which I appreciate since I hate anyone touching my Harley :)

Ryan great video. A couple points. I purchased the tool instead of using the wood. It only cost $39 I bought it plus the tool to hold the cam gear just to have in my tool box if I ever need them. I know that this is anal but when changing my primary oil my clutch cover bolts got rounded off (maybe my fault for not having a good Torx or HD tighten the hell out of them when they did my last service. I replaced the bolts and kept the good ones for shares. I tried like hell to remove the bad bolt, I finally removed the outer primary to lay flat and the sucker came right out. Oh don't ask about the oil filter, they must have used an impact on it. Sorry to go on but I've started doing my own service. I was just lazy plus when I bought my 12 Limited I got the 3 year service package I didn't pay for squat for service or parts. My dealer Or Harley don't offer that anymore. TTFN

Hey Rayn, thanks for this great video brother! I'm replacing the belt on my 03' Road King. The tip using the wood for the gear jam works perfect. Hope all is well with you and your family.
Hey buddy I’m looking at doing mine for my 03 roadking was just hoping you still have knowledge of all the torque specs as I can’t find them anywhere, cheers
I want to start by saying that this was a great video! Although I am a bit confused as to why you couldn't just put a 1/4" extension on your Allen socket to remove the starter bolt(s). Welding all the crap together seems unnecessary, however if it works it works. Thanks for the video, definitely helpful!
If you look at the spacing of the bolt against the casing there is very little room. Maybe with a slightly longer alan head you might be able to do it.
If you go back and look they removed the shaft for mids and the new inner primary cover doesn’t have the hole for the shifter either , looks like they did this video because they were going from mids to forward controla
Great video coupled with the manual concurred a primary belt change on a fatboy 2012. The additions though to this video, exhaust system removed, swing arm bolt partially removed, managed not to remove oil tank through tooling mods.
On a 1995 (and other?) Softail Fat Boy you need to remove the oval chain tensioner cover. Two of the bolts go through into the inner primary cover so the outer primary cover will not come off without removing those.
Right on! Glad we could help. We appreciate the positive feedback. Ride safe & Ride Often! Hey guys this a great video. Nice step by step. Only one thing I would add, at the 26:15 min mark while putting the clutch inspection plate back on you say to torque 74-108, but you did not specify that now you are using inch pounds and not foot pounds. Mechanics will pick it up, but it could be confusing to some. Please do not misunderstand, it is a great video, very informative.
Thanks for the video, very good visual aid along the FSM. Managed to loosen the starter bolts on 2014 Softail without removing oil tank. Tip: remove battery, then the plastic tray under it, and you can feel the rear starter bolt just under the metal tab. Get 1/4 allen with swivel in through the battery compartment and feed long 1/4 extension from intake side to join in there. Took me 5 minutes elaborating and 1 minute doing, definitelly better than removing the oil tank.

This video is going to help me tremendously! I just got my first 09’ fxdl and finished building it but the old belt snapped down the road. With this video I can put a new belt in. Thanks!
Why did you take the clutch inspection, or derby cover off, if you are removing the inner, and outer primary covers? After watching several of your videos related to inner, and outer primary cover removal. I left the derby cover on, drained the oil out then removed the outer primary cover in one piece.
What a job . Don,t break a belt out in the sticks . Crazy amount of work . I just watched a guy replacing the belt on an electric bike . It took him 30 minutes .
Exactly - I've seen it take a guy 19 hours doing it the first time with his service manual. He was taking his time obviously and borrowing tools throughout which slowed him down but the amount of steps to simply replace a belt is ridiculous. Especially removing the primary drive completely off the bike and the swingarm WTF. So stupid. But great video explaining the ridiculousness involved to replace something that should take 30 minutes if their engineers weren't morons.
Question, were you able to reinstall the shift shaft through the inner and outer primary the way it was put together or do you have to totally disassemble it again to re-install the shift shaft?
Brilliant……..going to have a go stripping the engine this weekend, I’ve got a few screwdrivers and pliers knocking around, do i need to let the tyres down first ??
Awesome vid ! Thankyou ! Question I’m doin a trike installation on a 1997 Dyna wide glide “FXD” And I need to remove the rear swing arm. ? Do I need to remove the primary covers to do this ? Thankyou in advance
A text message on the video said on the Softail you have to remove the oil tank. I suppose that's to get to the starter bolts. But on my 95 Fat Boy I removed the inner fender cover which let me get to the rear starter bolt. Tedious, 1/4 turn on an allen wrench at a time but I got it. Then used a straight hex with a 1/4 socket and extension to get the front one.
Interesting, I did not know Harley Davidson still used imperial size bolts and screws decades after the US auto industry went metric. The video shows everything but the actual removal and replacement of the final drive belt.
Back in ‘84 I used a piece of wood to jam between the motor sprocket and clutch housing. I didn’t notice a small splinter of wood and of course it ended up plugging my oil return to the motor. I was on a run and checked my oil and there was none. I’m surprised I didn’t burn up that motor but it kept on running...the good/bad old days...thanks for the great videos amigo 😎
I have to compliment you on this video like everyone else, it is very informative and very helpful to actually see it performed rather than read how to do it. You mention torquing the 5 primary cover bolts to 84-105 that would have to be in inch pounds. Can the shifter lever shaft be installed through the primary covers after they are assembled or should it be installed at the same time as the starter? The video showed removing it the same time the starter was removed but never mentioned it or showed it being installed during reassembly, just curious if it matters.
My 2002 FLHTPI has a cam type of belt adjustment at the axle nut ? Unlike my 1993 FLHT , which had one similiar to the one you showed . Any tips on adjusting the " Cam " type belt adjustment on the 2002 FLHTPI ? Great Video , Thanks for Posting !
Thank you for let us see how to remove the primary transmission. We would have appreciated that you really show us ( title of this vidéo ) how to put new belt. Do I need to disasemble the swing arm to insert the belt on the front pulley? Not that clear at all, I Hope and expect an additionnal help from you. Thanks in advance.
Wish I could find a video like this for the fam swing arm bushing replacement I need to know the nut size for the swing arm hshaft in hope I can get a ring spanner and thin it down so I don’t have to remove clutch set
You can get to the starter bolts on a softail with a 3/8” drive extension, you should disconnect the battery unless you have plastidipped tools or like frying the finish off of your chrome oil tank, or lines.
Hello! I believe that on the video there is something important that has been forgotten. Where did the gearshift shaft that crosses the primary case???

when do you recommend changing the final drive belt (miles/age)? I have a 2012 ultra classic with 40K miles. when should I look at changing it? I'd rather change it on my terms rather than have it break while on the road. thanks and love the videos.
They can go for very high miles. Just inspecting them is the key when servicing/inspecting your bike. There are general times HD recommends for different years/models.........I'd just look in your owner's manual. Likely, you can go even past what they recommend. they don't fail that often unless they get some sort of damage or sharp rock or something stuck in them.
@@EARDRUMASSASSIN , not going to argue with you there, I prefer my mid controls as well! I should have put the word "upgrade" in quotes, as I referenced it directly from the preceding video where they did the conversion..

Same process except (a real pain in the ass) is the swing arm has to be removed on one side to slip the belt out. Ryan missed a big part for a bagger. I have a Street Glide and have to do this process.

I'm wanting to switch my front sprocket from a 32 tooth to a 34 tooth for better interstate cruising. Is there enough adjustment to use a stock belt or do I need a longer belt?
I done it on 2012 streetglide kept the stock belt ... hiway rpm went down about 500rpm but I switched back to stock because it was tall and hard to keep in 1st during stop n go traffic ...kept on needing the clutch below 5mph and you kinda have to let up on ur throttle when ur riding in groups because the rider in front will be shifting gears b4 you and u need to slow up so u dont hit him while you wait for him to get back up to speed...than ur out of "sync" when you have to shift ... hiway it's great

I wish I had know how much it was going to cost, needed new belt and pulley and after watching video maybe would have done it myself. 2,100.00 ugh. Picked up a rock or something that put a hole in belt and broke trim piece on pulley

I’m an entry level bike mechanic and the info in this is AWESOME. I love the hack with the zip tie! Defiantly going to use that at work.
Rock on!!!!
$1500 job here in Michigan, thanks for the vid Ryan!
When replacing the inspection cover, make sure you torque it down to INCH pounds, not foot pounds. This needs to be clarified.
The best teacher ever..... Luca , from Italy!!
Luca, thank you so much! I appreciate that. Hope all is well in Italy.
Wow an Awesome in depth video. Very informative. I just got an 1985 FXR and did not notice it needs a belt. The shop said about $600. I am on a real low budget. This video sure helped me out. Thank you so much.
You are most welcome Randy! Glad to help.

Awesome video. Thank you for doing this. Great clarity with one person narrating while someone does the work.
Armand 0ur81goon; On a '95 fxsts Bad Boy Springer, to replace the outter primery seal , do i have remove trhe inner primery ?
TTFN
Thank you. Just had to take off the bdl belt drive on my bike. Your vid cracked it for me.

I hope you switched to forward controls during this and didn't have to take it all the way back apart to feed the shift rod through.. lol.
Yeah I think they had to pull that all back down again !
Ya they missed that lol
If you go back and look they removed the shaft for mids and the new inner primary cover doesn’t have the hole for the shifter either , looks like they did this video because they were going from mids to forward controla
Great video coupled with the manual concurred a primary belt change on a fatboy 2012. The additions though to this video, exhaust system removed, swing arm bolt partially removed, managed not to remove oil tank through tooling mods.
Doing this now, thank you so much for putting out this video.
You saved me alot of time:)
On a 1995 (and other?) Softail Fat Boy you need to remove the oval chain tensioner cover. Two of the bolts go through into the inner primary cover so the outer primary cover will not come off without removing those.
Great video buddy but quick question what’s the parts should I replace while I’m in there?
Excellent video. Very helpful to this new guy who has to replace a drive belt. I am looking at your other links now for more info.
Right on! Glad we could help. We appreciate the positive feedback.

Lol also didn't show installing the clutch rod.

@@RyanUrlacher o
Great video, very easy to follow for new Harley owners !
This video is going to help me tremendously! I just got my first 09’ fxdl and finished building it but the old belt snapped down the road. With this video I can put a new belt in. Thanks!
U betcha!!
Why did you take the clutch inspection, or derby cover off, if you are removing the inner, and outer primary covers? After watching several of your videos related to inner, and outer primary cover removal. I left the derby cover on, drained the oil out then removed the outer primary cover in one piece.
I have a '90 softail and it looks like the swingarm has to come off, maybe other stuff. Do you have a video on doing a belt on that model?
Thankyou !
Question
I’m doin a trike installation on a 1997 Dyna wide glide “FXD”
And I need to remove the rear swing arm.
Good luck on getting the gear selector rod back in.
Interesting, I did not know Harley Davidson still used imperial size bolts and screws decades after the US auto industry went metric. The video shows everything but the actual removal and replacement of the final drive belt.
Great, informative video. What if it was a hydraulic clutch?
Back in ‘84 I used a piece of wood to jam between the motor sprocket and clutch housing. I didn’t notice a small splinter of wood and of course it ended up plugging my oil return to the motor. I was on a run and checked my oil and there was none. I’m surprised I didn’t burn up that motor but it kept on running...the good/bad old days...thanks for the great videos amigo 😎
TY!!
Is it necessary to replace the sprockets/pulleys front and rear when replacing old with new belt?
I have to compliment you on this video like everyone else, it is very informative and very helpful to actually see it performed rather than read how to do it. You mention torquing the 5 primary cover bolts to 84-105 that would have to be in inch pounds. Can the shifter lever shaft be installed through the primary covers after they are assembled or should it be installed at the same time as the starter? The video showed removing it the same time the starter was removed but never mentioned it or showed it being installed during reassembly, just curious if it matters.
pretty sure that was by mistake. it has to be installed before cover
What about the belt going around the swing arm?
Thanks for the video, sincerely a 1%er outlaw biker.
No problem 👍
You the man.
I just bought a new used 11 Road King Classic. How much did you just save?
saw same thing no shifter shaft on reassembly. take it all apart again. still like all videos thanks
That's because we moved and installed forward controls. No mid shifter anymore. Did it at the same time.
What about the swing arm on a Softail how do you get the belt around it
Was there anything special about reinstalling the shifter rod? I didn't see it reinstalled in the video. Thanks
Thanks for watching!
Had to take the oil tank off mine. But mine was an 88 I don't think it could be worse to work on.
Hello! I believe that on the video there is something important that has been forgotten. Where did the gearshift shaft that crosses the primary case???
Excellent video, this helped me out loads
I’m guessing you’re putting on forward controls or that’s a different dyna. The inner primary doesn’t have the shift shaft going through.
Yes, we put on forward controls.

THANK YOU, BEEN QUITE A WHILE
ever heard of any Harley models that require swing arm to be removed to replace belt?
How many hrs would be reasonable on a work order?
thank God I converted my belt over to chain when I bought my flhtcu. Using a belt was the dumbest thing Harley did.
Is this any different than replacing the triumph thunderbird final belt drive ?
Pardon my ignorance but wouldn't the belt still be around the swingarm.
Great video, my only comment/question is about the loctite.. blue is made to be serviceable and red is intended for permanent applications. Is blue what you meant to say?
Neither is truly permanent. Use which the one you prefer.

when do you recommend changing the final drive belt (miles/age)? I have a 2012 ultra classic with 40K miles. when should I look at changing it? I'd rather change it on my terms rather than have it break while on the road. thanks and love the videos.
They can go for very high miles. Just inspecting them is the key when servicing/inspecting your bike. There are general times HD recommends for different years/models.........I'd just look in your owner's manual. Likely, you can go even past what they recommend. they don't fail that often unless they get some sort of damage or sharp rock or something stuck in them.
thanks for the info and your time.
Will this be similar on a 09 fxcwc
@10:20 does it matter if the belt isn’t center on the sprocket?
where is the shift shaft ? I did not see it sticking thru on reassembly
Mark Miller They showed in another video that this particular bike got a forward control upgrade at the same time.
Just saw that too. Should have been explained.
@@bearded_firemedic since when is fowards an upgrade. Mid controls is where it’s at.
@@EARDRUMASSASSIN , not going to argue with you there, I prefer my mid controls as well! I should have put the word "upgrade" in quotes, as I referenced it directly from the preceding video where they did the conversion..

Looking for info on changing the final drive belt on a 2016 Road Glide.
We don't have one yet. Sorry.
Same process except (a real pain in the ass) is the swing arm has to be removed on one side to slip the belt out. Ryan missed a big part for a bagger. I have a Street Glide and have to do this process.
Having trouble with a 05 Road King clutch, when you take it out and look at it, what exactly are you looking for and what should you see or not see
Great video thank you for posting..... but are you not going to acknowledge the shifter not being reinstalled.... my heart wouldve droppped.
Yes I agree I didn't see them reinstall the shifter
Lurch & Big Daddy ! Proper Harley D shop !!!!!!
Good argument for a Sportster.
Great video good job
Did you have to take the cover back off to put the shift lever back on I notice I didn't see it at the Verriand
No, Sorry for the confusion there. We put a forward control kit on. We moved the mid controls to forward controls.

I also noticed that. Great easy to follow video. Thanks.
I'm wanting to switch my front sprocket from a 32 tooth to a 34 tooth for better interstate cruising. Is there enough adjustment to use a stock belt or do I need a longer belt?
I done it on 2012 streetglide kept the stock belt ... hiway rpm went down about 500rpm but I switched back to stock because it was tall and hard to keep in 1st during stop n go traffic ...kept on needing the clutch below 5mph and you kinda have to let up on ur throttle when ur riding in groups because the rider in front will be shifting gears b4 you and u need to slow up so u dont hit him while you wait for him to get back up to speed...than ur out of "sync" when you have to shift ... hiway it's great
Awesome video. Thank you
Thankyou for the video.
My pleasure!
is there an after market belt receiver to drop revs for highway cruising?
Not that we are aware of.

The socket size is 1 3/16 inches is that right ?
The Torx bolts may take a T27 (1/4") instead of a T25. Just an FYI.
U have every thing back together when ya gonna put the shift lever through the whole
Actually, during this video and project we installed forward controls to include re-locating the shifter. Glad you liked the video
Great job
Great video! 'Blue' loctite.

Shift shaft?
Have one of these for a 2005 sporster custom.
Dude glazed over placing shifter back through primary cover. But that was fun to have to tear it all back down to put it back in place
We didn't. We put a forward control kit on at the same time. It moves the shifter forward. Multiple videos were filmed. It's all good. Nothing is forgotten. You can see other videos here www.lawabidingbiker.com/buyvideos
could you show me also the softail final belt drive remove completely? Thanks bro!
We'll add it to our "to do" list Luca.

I too, would like to see this.
Man I really don't want to do all that work on my bike. Great video though even though it's a bit old now, thank you
I wish I had know how much it was going to cost, needed new belt and pulley and after watching video maybe would have done it myself. 2,100.00 ugh. Picked up a rock or something that put a hole in belt and broke trim piece on pulley
Great man
Awesome video
Thanks for that shout out Andrez. We love helping bikers and appreciate it when bikers comment.

Mmmhhh forgotten to re-mount the gear-speed lever and pedal. I don't know if it needs new o-ring to avoid oil leakage and dirt shoe.
In the older comments he mentions they put a forwards conversion on at the same time. The hole in the cover is plugged with a seal.
