Thanks Rick for sharing your wheel bearing repair. You did a great job on explaining how to go about fixing this issue. Hopefully you won't have to worry about that for awhile. Looking forward for more of your camping trips with Akela🐕🦺 Safe travels
I have been repacking my wheel bearings for fifty years and I knew not to mix grease, but I didn't know why. That explains why my truck bearing grease was all soupy once, I must have mixed up the grease. Very good explanation and videography. Good tip on checking the bearing temp with the gun. I guess Dexter packed the bearings with urea grease and I added lithium. Time to repack.
I don't think it was any one thing, But the bearings failed and disintegration and the wheel over heated and destroyed itself. Actually an easy fix in the end and everything is great again!!
Another check on the box of reasons I like a travel trailer versus a motorhome. I can drop it and come back for it! Don't need to give up everything while someone fixes it.
Thank you for showing us that repair! Major stuff..... Glad you are feeling better. Time for some camping fun. I hope you can find a location with some fair winter weather for you and plenty of room for Akela to run after that ball or whittle some sticks into the perfect size.
Glad you’re back up and running! Hoping I don’t ever have to do a bearings repair. 😮 We’re getting ready to build the bed platform with struts based on your previous video. Will send you a pic when we’re done. Thanks for the know-how!
Akeila just wants you to stop messing with the trailer and do something important like throw the ball ;) Happy new year and looking forward to you getting back travelling. Did a U-haul trailer with bad bearings. Seems uhaul specified odd bearings and weird wheel lug diameter. Was cheaper to replace axle and hubs as I had better standard wheels. Straight axle and new hubs was something like $150.
@@GoingNoWhereFast The axle on my 1987 popup still works fine. Guess they can't handle rough roads. Never liked the independent suspension axles other than higher ground clearance vs straight axle. Don't like those axles with the zerk fittings on the end. Axle gets filled with grease and causing heat from "churning". I just repack the bearings every year or so and have no problems.
@@ScottHenion Well if they don't get contaminated with dirt, sand or water, and the grease is sealed in the axle well, they should last forever. The grease is destroyed by heat. SO High speed driving probably is the worse thing. And High speed with shock loads like potholes really kills bearings fast. Probably my issue.
That was very interesting to watch, and I know nothing about it. You're description was easy to understand. Sorry you were so ill, I've had this damn bug for over 2 months, 2 different antibiotics, one twice. I finally told my doctor I want to see an ENT. Hope you're feeling better. Like watching all of your videos.
My "company clinic" just gave me some methlyprednisone for my hacking cough and we will see how it works. I hate winter grunge illness... Sun and warm will help. Thanks for sharing!
Rick you did a great job explaining and demonstrating a wheel bearing repair. I would like to add that even though you can grease your bearings without removing the hub the wheel should be removed once a year if you use your trailer at least 2-3 times or more a month for a visual inspection of the bearing, bearing race, seal and hub. You can replace the bearing race instead of buying a new hub but that's another step in the process and does take some skill and knowledge of how to do it. You mentioned using Lucas grease I'm going to assume it's synthetic grease and that's a good product. I prefer Amsoil but both products are high quality with the same lubricating abilities. Good job and happy camping!!
I have found Lucas greases all over the US. I have heard of Amsoil, but have not seen it anywhere yet. And at $50 for bearings, hubs, races installed and seals. Trying to clean the hub and install races and not damage them was worth the nice NEW clean hubs.
Rick, Something my Father taught me years ago was to carry a full set of bearings and seals with cotter pins. He always had the bearings prepacked with grease so he could do it on the side of the road. I always clean my bearings in gasoline and not Kerosene. A diesel mechanic told me that kerosene will leave a film-repelling the grease. I don't know if that is true but I switched from kerosene to gasoline
Gas is so toxic, Kerosene is too, but not quite as bad. There are good "parts Wash Solvents", but they aren't good either. If you catch the bearings making noise and getting hot on the side of the road, you can change them, But most of the time you have to "re-Machine" the spindle and totally clean all old grease and dirt from the hub, so road side repairs aren't as easy as they used to be!
Very good demonstration of how to replace/repack the wheel bearings. Regret the expererience ruined your trip but you should be good for many more Aliner adventures now. Checking and greasing the wheel bearings is alway on my checklist for trips in my ALiner and picked up some good things to look for during the "preflight." 😉 Loved those templates!
At the 5:00 mark, it looks like the surface that the seal rides on had some damage or was that just some rust stains? If it is damaged, there are special seal kits you can buy that include a sleeve that presses over the damaged seal surface on the axle and the new seal rides on it. In any case, nice job. Glad to see, hmm, does the ALiner have a name? Anyway, glad to see him/her back on the road. Hey, if it doesn't have a name, maybe you can get your subscribers to come up with a good one. Kind of like Slim's old Abner. Still looking for the day you two can get together. I bet it would be an interesting meeting.
Yes, there were some minor scrapes. We polished them down smooth and I decided to let it try. I know of the over seal kits, but I can do that after first inspection if the leakage is excessive.
@@GoingNoWhereFast I should've known that you knew about those seals. Anyone who can make brakes out of paper plates would know about stuff like that.😁
Hello Rick. Great explanation (in depth) of how hubs and axles work. A question; do you know if tire pressure monitors with heat notification will detect hub heat problems? At least as an early warning. Pups and people have different priorities. Obviously Akela doesn't share your axle concern!
Not sure, but I doubt they would do much to monitor the hubs. Your talking about the heat at the bearing traveling through the rim and into the tire. I would say that's a long distance with lots of heat dissipation. I'm sure the temp difference could be 200deg or more.
Something i do is if i stop i feel the hub on my trailer even before i had to retire i was a truck driver. Not try to criticize or be an ass but what might have cause the bearings to go was to much greasing to much . I know(WHAT ??) when you over grease you can blow out the back seal. Water can will get in your bearings i had it happen to me with a boat trailer seen on a car trailer too ( took out the brakes on that wheel ). Now for helpful tip when work on your hubs use the tire for setting the race and seal. You mentioned spare parts i keep a bearing cap with my 3 trailers lost once .
Hey Rick with over 40yrs of automotive & truck plus some trailer parts I've sold over those years as always good presentation.. Hi to Akela also!
Thanks Roger! I'll keep the blooper reel to myself then!! 🤣🤣🤣
Glad to see the A-liner is ready to roll.. You made the repair look easy. Looking forward to seeing your upcoming adventures!
Planning is underway!! We have the Christmas adventure next week... It was a good one!
Good you're feeling better. You did it, knew you could! Nice fix. Great educational video that could save travelers a big headache. 🙂👍👍
Thanks 👍

Back to Camping Next Week!! We had a Great Trip!
Great video Rick. Hard way to get a subject though. Time to start thinking of a new trailer? Again 🙏❤️ HAPPY CAMPING
I've been thinking, And even thinking hard isn't making the money appear anywhere!! lol
Great video, Rick. This is on my Spring list before camping.
Sounds great! It can't hurt!

The worse part is getting the all the old grease gone. I choose to buy new hubs...lol
For my thinking you used to much grease and your bearing are not lose enough .But that's me .Like your videos .

Depending on your Mattress, it might require powerful struts. Make sure they are well anchored or they tend to pull things apart.

Thanks! I was just looking at that myself!! lol I added a new Playlist for RV maintenance, repairs, and modifications
thanks for the tips and please take some time to throw that ball for your pup!
Trust me.... He sees plenty of kicked ball!! I had a bruise on my foot from kicking the damn thing so much!!
So did you rent a flat-bed trailer wherever the bearing failed, so you could get the Aliner home?
No, those are local rentals only, so I had to go home and pick it up and then go get the trailer. and return it at the local place.

Yes, Losing a cap is a death sentence people don't even notice. We have pointed that out at Campgrounds at least 5 times to people.
@@GoingNoWhereFast I lost one on 29 after visiting Walton's mountain museum off 29 in VA
That spindle is damaged, especially on the surface where the grease seal rides.
I know it still looks pretty bad, but we polished it really smooth and will see how it performs. I think it’ll be all right with careful monitoring.
