  • I LOVE modern calligraphy! And sometimes it seems like you need to use a brush pen to create this look and that a dip pen is for more "formal" styles. But I think it's completely possible to create beautiful, modern calligraphy using a pointed pen (or dip pen) and ink! Here is my intro tutorial. You can grab the free practice worksheets used in this video at howtohandletter.com/resourceli...

    What are the types of paper where you can smoothly use dip pens? I'm currently practicing writing with dip pens on standard bond papers and watercolor paper. My prof already noted that using dip pens on these papers is quite a hassle because the dip pens accumulate the fiber on the paper. But ofc, we're using these papers for now since it's just for practice.

      That is such a great/fun question! There are definitely still people out there making an income from doing more traditional things like envelope calligraphy for weddings or hand drawn signage. But I feel like it's also expanded SO much! When you look around at products in stores like Target, so much of what is there was created using lettering. People are making & selling hand drawn fonts using procreate and/or adobe illustrator. Lots of people use their lettering to create physical products to sell, like mugs, apparel, etc... but also licensing your work to have it put on products other people are making is another option (think about scrapbooking or journaling products like stamps or paper). Some people also make repeating patterns for things like fabric, wallpaper... there are so many options! Thanks for watching!

    • @HowtoHandLetter
      @HowtoHandLetter  3 роки тому +1

      I don't have a ton of experience with fountain pens (I'm learning, but still new to them!) but from my understanding, they're usually not as flexible as a dip pen nib or a brush pen. I have one that has a flex nib, but the variation in thick & thin strokes is very subtle. That being said, I do still love to use them for handlettering and script writing, they just don't have the same thick/thin strokes as the others! Hope that helps!

    I just bought a dip pen for the first time ever I have no idea what I am doing. Your video was informative but I still suck lol. I have 0 idea how to pressure control it.

    • @HowtoHandLetter
      @HowtoHandLetter  2 роки тому

      I'm so sorry! Do you know what type of tip it has? When I first got a dip pen, I think I bought a monoline type of tip for it so no matter how much pressure I applied, it didn't seem to work right. Turns out it was not me! Another thought is did you clean it? Sometimes I think there can be some coating on a new tip that can cause problems with the ink flow. Hope it's going better for you! Thanks for watching!

  • @etm567
    @etm567 Рік тому

    Nope. I cannot watch this. Never. Absolutely ridiculous and ... why? Why do you think your middle finger is better at fine directions than your index finger? That is provably false. Why not use your toes?

  • @etm567
    @etm567 Рік тому

    Golly, you still don't hold your pen correctly. Yes, I am old, and I learned to hold my pen the way they taught me. Why did your generation absolutely refuse to hold pens and pencils the way they taught you? And you still don't hold it correctly, even on the, "Okay, I do hold my pen this way when... ." No, that is not the correct way. Why? I just want to know why? Almost nobody from your generation holds a pen or pencil the way that is considered to be "correct," and I am going to guess if you had learned to do it the other way from the beginning it might have been easier for you. But can you tell me why you absolutely refused to do it the way people tried to teach you to do it? Is it like upspeak? Which you are not guilty of at all, by the way. But the way you are holding your pen is giving me the heebie jeebies.

    • @heyyouyourefinallyawake
      @heyyouyourefinallyawake 9 місяців тому +1

      If we're being honest, there is no "correct" way to hold it as it's almost entirely subjective to the individual behind the pen; Let's put it this way, say a poet from the Victorian era time traveled and was attending a seminar at the local museum about true dip pen/quill and ink penmanship. Say you walk up to him to showcase how "correctly" you can write, only for him to spit on your paper, crumple it up, and demand to know why you have the audacity to "write the way you do" and is repeatedly demanding to know why you "refuse" to write "correctly". He goes on to question your capabilities, entirely generalizing an entire generation of people into one instance, and berrating you with harsh unrealistic criticisms; He just wants to know why you refuse to do it the way "you were taught". This hypothetical situation sounds very familiar, and the poet sounds like an incredibly shallow and bitter person with absolutely no awareness of the evolving world around them, and that it's ok to be original and unconventional in your artistic ways so long as you achieve what youre wanting to create. Please be more kind to people just trying to share knowledge they've gained and what's personally helped them in their journey, your old age should be granting you wisdom to celebrate new and innovative ways that put a fresh, fun, relatable spin on age old generational hobbies. God bless you, and I hope your remaining days are filled with positivity, love, and happiness.
