I love these sort of matte paintings. I worked on this indie film Dreaming of a White Doomsday so I was ready to do a full on apocalyptic town (yeah it's really a cliche but... hey?!" but all I had to do was to 2D paint a abandoned grey dirt covered plain and some "White Cliffs of Dover" like structures for the foreground.
Another shot I just had to put in a wooden collapsed building -- which was fun because the location manager asked during the screening: "Where's this shot?" The director said: "Are you kidding me, that's the lumberyard where we snuck in on Sundays!"
-"I can't recall that house there?!"
"Seriously dude? That's mattepainted and comped in by Ray!"
And I did some snowy set extensions.
I like doing 3D as well but it takes SOOOOO much more time than just doing a 2.5D projection.

I am always worried about the copyrights when i do that type of work. How do i stay in the legal zone when i mix images?

      Use your own images.

Take your own photos, find free pictures (non copyright) on the websites, or pay small amount of fee on sites like gettyimage.

Hey do you take the photos yourself ? Cause I'm having a real hard time finding some city images on the internet.. And fitting everything to the perspective.

Gemial, aunque pierde tiempo en darle detalles a cosas que al final ni se notan, como por ejemplo el anuncio del taxy, para que cambiarlo si al final quedo igual, no se nota lo que era!

Not a matte painting, strictly speaking, is it? You couldn't have this as a background in a movie and it be believable as the actual background - which is what matte paintings are used for. Yours is a concept painting.
