I don’t understand why it’s done on glass. The robot never explained that.
Matte paintings are pretty much like layers you put over something that’s being filmed. They were used to touch up scenes and sets without having to make new props or use cgi.

The software version is boring, part of the fun of movies is being able to know how they did it, and the artsy figuring out of the process of how to do it yourself. Everything being done in expensive software ruins everything, and really, what have we even gained from the cheapening and digitalization in terms of the core of movies? If you ask me, nothing at all. We lost everything.
Also, on a technical level, most of that stuff towards the end like ads and stuff isn't actually matte painting. Its just graphic design. Airbrushed magazine ads in the 1980s weren't matte painting, and that's what those are the boring 2010s version of. Calling adding a background to an image the same thing is as dumb as calling the corolla a "brand" just because its recognizable.
I hear you about cgi taking some of the magic out of movies. I recently watched the first Terminator with my 14-year old nephew (who had never watched it) and part of the fun was explaining to him how each effect was achieved. Animatronics in one shot, make up in the very next one, puppets, forced perspective, matte painting, stop-motion... Being a nerd like his uncle, the kid was fascinated by the variety of techniques. Nowadays, when you see something impossible on the screen, you just go "oh, it was computer-generated."
Don't get me wrong: I know practical effects are still used even on cgi-heavy productions. But my point is we, the audience, don't wonder anymore, don't ask ourselves "how did they do that?" after a particularly spectacular scene. If it looks impossible, we just assume it must be cgi (even when sometimes it isn't).

What about GLOSS PAINTING 😅
Nowadays technic..
Just draw a digital painting in a computer , print it out in full color , paste it on the glass , bring it to the shooting location , cut away the live action section part and place camera InFRONT of the paste image on glass with live action background.
This technic i call as GLOSS PAINTING , doing a digital image painting of non exist scenery.
Only if the scene required a live action combine with fantasy imaginary location.
Not required to hired an artist to do painting on glass
Even a real photo scene can be paste on the glass , cut the desired areas to be combine with live action on time shoot.
SPFX of modern days not just only 100% A.I. digital painting or miniature shots.
Still the traditional technic
Painting ❌ on glass
Photography image ☑️ paste on glass.
Gloss Painting 😂
using a digital voice? practically unwatchable…
