Hey guys! This is part of what has kept me pretty busy lately, happy to finally be able to show it off! It's a timelapse from part of my latest tutorial on matte painting. If you're curious about the course or think a friend/family member might find this useful, send them this way cbr.sh/nfq3cu, super appreciated! Hope you like it!
Good lord some of the people in the comments... Matte painting isn't intended to be a piece of art to be sold or shown at a museum, it's a means to an end. Only part of a much bigger production. It's done to visualise a concept not to show how skillfull or how great of an artist you are for christ's sake! And if you have a problem with it being called matte "painting" then take it up with the person who came up with the term not the people who use it. It's not the artists' fault that that's the industry term for this kind of image creation. Now that i got that off my chest, despite what people think, this stuff still takes a lot of skill and this was executed beautifully. Amazing work!
This is Graphic Design. Rarely is Graphic Design used to create 100% original works from scratch and almost always utilizes photobashing. This is a perfect look for a conceptual landscape for a film and I love the giant skeleton.
Except that you've totally lied. You've confused concept art with matte paintings. The term matte painting comes from the FX industry to mean a painting matted into a shot where the real thing would not be possible to shoot.
@@jareddegraw8719 This is nothing near graphic design. Why does the internet generation think opinion is the same as fact. This is concept art. that's all. It doesn't matter if it was photo bashed or not.
Jared DeGraw uh, no, this isn’t graphic design... like at all. That’s a totally false statement and you should really look up on Wikipedia what graphic design is.

But people nowadays bash on others so harshly, when they simply can’t understand how much effort it’s takes for these type of things. Especially since I struggle a lot with drawing and watching this just sort of shows you the different ways you can express your art. I hope one day I can grow to have this sort of talent. It’s really just inspiring

Is it the video compression or does the area behind the second waterfall seem a bit too crisp? The bushes and trees in front of it seem a bit blurred out compared to the rocky area behind. Maybe I am wrong but I would have pushed it a touch to the back with some blue tint or some slightly haze on it. Don´t get me wrong it´s a great piece! Especially considering the time. And sorry if I am nit-picky but something bothered me the second I saw the final piece and I can´t unsee it XD
People who hate on matte painting and photobashing are very ignorant. Critics have always been critical against new tools and techniques, this is nothing new, but rarely have the critics been artists and talented creatives, because know that the same rule apply in all forms of visual arts, it all takes the same princioles, skills and the eye of an artist to make it work. Do you really think great matte painters/photobashers started with these tools? Most of them are great with other art techniques and use these techniques and tools to supplement their art and to have fun with new ways of making art and being creative.
No matter what you draw or which art style you use, it always turns out beautiful! I would hang every single one of your drawings on my wall if I could ^^
Took me a minute to remember that most people probably have absolutely no idea what a Matte painting is, what they are used for, and why real photos are used for them.
There are great musicians and then there are those that sample the music....Nothing against samplers. But imagine them trying to pass themselves off as real musicians.

It shouldn't even be called painting. It should be called photobashing. "There are even those who say graphite drawings whom has been slightly smudge isn't real drawings". I love how organized your layers are
I understood the importance of photo bashing but didn’t think I’d ever really want to use it until now. Nice work btw
F's in the chat for the dead giant
Is it the video compression or does the area behind the second waterfall seem a bit too crisp? The bushes and trees in front of it seem a bit blurred out compared to the rocky area behind. Maybe I am wrong but I would have pushed it a touch to the back with some blue tint or some slightly haze on it. Don´t get me wrong it´s a great piece! Especially considering the time. And sorry if I am nit-picky but something bothered me the second I saw the final piece and I can´t unsee it XD
that was pretty big brain of you marc
People who hate on matte painting and photobashing are very ignorant. Critics have always been critical against new tools and techniques, this is nothing new, but rarely have the critics been artists and talented creatives, because know that the same rule apply in all forms of visual arts, it all takes the same princioles, skills and the eye of an artist to make it work.
Do you really think great matte painters/photobashers started with these tools? Most of them are great with other art techniques and use these techniques and tools to supplement their art and to have fun with new ways of making art and being creative.
No matter what you draw or which art style you use, it always turns out beautiful! I would hang every single one of your drawings on my wall if I could ^^
Zero negative comments ❤️
This is some pro level photobashing!!
people thinking is cheating lmao.
Took me a minute to remember that most people probably have absolutely no idea what a Matte painting is, what they are used for, and why real photos are used for them.
There are great musicians and then there are those that sample the music....Nothing against samplers. But imagine them trying to pass themselves off as real musicians.

Dude, you have no clue as to where matte painting is being used. If you wanna be hired by Naughty Dog things like these are a must. If you don't wanna do it you won't be hired by many official gaming and movie companies.
I also know folks whom say that digital painting isn't real painting. There are even those who say graphite drawings whom has been slightly smudge isn't real drawings. You can go on and on. Hell I can even say nothing is real art unless you make every tool all by yourself.
@@Thesamurai1999 Yes, I get that it is done this way in the industry...In some companies. Not all.
"I also know folks whom say that digital painting isn't real painting".
^^Matte painting is the lead cause of this...
They see videos like this, and think that's the way every artist does it...
It shouldn't even be called painting. It should be called photobashing.
"There are even those who say graphite drawings whom has been slightly smudge isn't real drawings".
See what you're doing there. Matte painting isn't this incredibly talented art that everyone is misunderstanding. Which is what all these arguments have in common. about digital painting and graphite that you're mentioning.
@Leofan I sample music myself, that is why I used that analogy. It's a strong analogy. But, it's ok if you don't understand that. I've also animated in 3D. I would put it well above matte painting. Matte painting is like someone who summarizes a book. Compared to the actually writer.
i feel like travelling with frodo with that music
Ultimate form of art
As a Geologist, I am deeply offended.
Oh, man! I'm intrigued, what's wrong with the geology in the image?
@@sanjacobs6261 I just felt like that was something a geologist would say. Lol.
@@TrevorDuran3390 Oh, dammit, I was exited to hear a geologist throw down about how wrong these rock-formations are, hahahha
@@sanjacobs6261 it's entirely possible.
THATS EXACTLY WHAT I CALL PHOTOSHOP... PHOTO... SHOP...
Omg just amazing!
Love your workspace
I loved watching this. My professors never taught me these concepts even though it's industry standard. If someone is interested in matte painting work or environment design, what are some resources we could find on this? Thanks!
This guy sells tutorial on this subject with this exact video. I think it's on Cubebrush.
Also check out FZDSchool on youtube for lots of free tutorials by one of the top concept artists in the world.
wow this looks fun, I need to learn this
