Ricoh GR III Review - The Good, the Bad and the Awesome!

  • I'm a huge Ricoh GR2 fan. So the Ricoh GR3 really needed to deliver in order to get me to upgrade. It took a week or so to adjust to all the changes. Now I could not see myself without it. I keep it with me at all times.
    Like all cameras it has its negatives and the question is, as always, if they outweigh the positives? For me they aren’t even close.

    As always, a great review. I love these pocketable APSC cameras. They are very versatile and their small size allows me to take them with me everywhere I go. I have a Fuji X70 which has even a workhorse for me, but if it died, I’d consider the GRIii as a replacement. My only objection is marketing. The small powerhouses are often marketed for street photography, but my experience is that they are a good all around family and vacation camera, too!

    Great review. I think I am going to have to watch it a couple more times to absorb all the information. I sold my GRII because I really needed a viewfinder and I didn’t like the UI. Hmmm - after this am I going to go back to Ricoh? Tempting.

  • @AndrewGoodCamera
    @AndrewGoodCamera 5 років тому +7

    The fact that Pentax can stabilize that little sucker makes the statements from Fuji that they cannot bring stabilization to the X-T series, because they are so small, very confusing to me. :) Great review, as always, Mattias!

    • @AndrewSowerby
      @AndrewSowerby 5 років тому +1

      What Pentax / Ricoh, Olympus and Minolta could do for so many years hasn't proved to be so easy for other camera manufacturers. Sony solved that issue by acquiring Minolta, but many other manufacturers haven't been really been up to the task so far. Every digital camera I've ever paid money for has had it, and I consider it absolutely essential. This is the reason I would never even consider the XT-3, but would take a long hard look at the X-H1.

    • @gearreallydoesntmatter
      @gearreallydoesntmatter  5 років тому +3

      If they added 4K as well it would probably over heat doing it. Fuji has taken the video road and will have to stay on it for now. But man, imagine a stills oriented XE3 or Xpro2. Like their version of the Nikon DF.

    Mattias, a great review of the GR3 - just bought the camera and agree with nearly everything you say. The GR3 goes everywhere and encourages you to take images like no other camera. With a Fuji 100F, part of literally the dynamic duo of compacts - in fact one could get by with just those 2 cameras and nothing else.

    So many things to comment on! First off, lovely images as always! If I've learned one thing from all of your videos, it's that no matter what camera you're using, you still retain your style and can capture great photos! I really liked the one at 0:30.
    Second: The highlight weighted metering sounds awesome! I believe that if I had that capability on my Fuji cameras, I would shoot more in aperture priority.
    Third: I spy some Kentucky Bourbon! Nice touch. ;)
    Lastly, that Q trigger and flash looks so cool! Perfect combo for a "pocket" camera.

The lens doors get stuck sometimes when I turn it on. No problem. A couple taps on a table and it pops open every time. Its a tank. Going to get the GR3 once it finally dies. Not sure when that will be. It will not die.

      - Size, button accessibility
      - Sharp lens
      - Customization
      - Highlight-weighted metering
      - RAW crop and fast image sync
      - IS
      - Better histogram than Fuji
      - Snap focus
      I don’t want anything bigger because it doesn’t fit my style of shooting.

      X100v costs atleast 20-30% more than Ricoh GR3 and the only difference with Fuji is their classic film simulations. You can actually get both Ricoh & Fuji. You should get a Fuji with a removable lens option bcoz Ricoh is fixed at 28mm and sometimes you may need a bit of zoom.

    Excellent review. You understand how these cameras have been designed to be worked. I’ve got a GXR, it’s a great camera. I’ve been waiting for this update of the GR with great anticipation.
    I wouldn’t suggest the GR is for everyone, but if after consideration it seems to be on your wavelength, take a day to learn it, they are such well thought out cameras. Nothing like them in my opinion.

    Sometimes you may think you owned a Leica SL2 or Hasselblad but you can get Great pictures with Ricoh GR3 for just a fraction of Leica's price!

    Mattias, you are the truth! Of all the reviews that I've seen on this camera, you're the only reviewer that mentioned an off-camera solution for the flash! Thank you! Big ups to you!

    In large part to your two review videos, I bought the GR3 for a recent trip and really enjoyed it. Thank you! I shot in Raw + JPG because I want to be able to use the picture modes and only if needed do more post processing. I haven't been able to figure out a way though to see the JPEGs in playback on the camera, it only shows me the Raw image. Is there a way to change which file is shown?

      Not sure. When shooting raw only it shows the image with the picture profile.

    Excellent video, as always. For a grab and go camera, would you buy this or the X70 (cost not being considered)?

    Hej Mathias
    Again a nice review! Your first GRiii review made me buy it and I absolutely love it although I have lost the exchangeable lens ring without knowing how it happened.
    Two additionel remarks to your review:
    Battery life: I just spend a week in Lisbon with the camera. I experienced the short battery life time but hadn't the nerve to see how long it lasted. Intead I brought my power bank and charged the camera during lunch or coffee breaks. Once a day was enough.
    Build quality:
    I find the camera a bit vulnerable around the lens. I use a small bolstered bag. Those leafs protecting the shutter will not stand hard blows which cold appear in a free hanging jacket pocket.
    But it is a beautiful camera. I had the Nikon A before which I also loved - so much!

    This is perfect. Just wish this had some sort of weather sealing. I can't take this out on a lot of days because it rains a lot here.

    Man, I love your reviews! I still remember the Nikon videos you did! Those got me to love the one I had, instead of switching brands because everyone else was doing it.
