Chris, I think you missed a lot about this wonderful street camera. 1. The wide shutter button is easier to press, especially for a small camera hold in one hand. 2. You can set to bypass the auto focusing and get snapshot by heavy press of shutter button. Very useful for street photography with some foreground. 3. Very good black and white color mode which can compare to Leica
Phenomenal review: extremely competent, engaging, efficient, prosumer to amateur, rocking every aspect of this thing. Agree that battery life and lack of manual focus ring are two big downsides to this lovely piece of machinery. Interestingly, the more I fall in love with thing, the more I see it has a lot of what I loved for years about my Lumix Lx7. Will continue researching. Keep up the great work. Very helpful.
Most people use Positive film preset combined with snap focus and highlight protect metering mode. This is why they really appreciate this camera as no editing is needed for the JPEGs then. It would have been great if you had covered these 3 main features.
My favorite pocketable camera right now. Replaced Sony RX100 Va (not sharp enough, ugly lens flare effects in night) & Fujifilm X100T (not a fan of 35mm, too heavy to be actually pocketable) for me.
Great review guys, Although I think you missed out on one important feature.... the ability to shoot DNG files straight to your phone over WiFi-yes DNG not JPEGs and edit them in something like the mobile Lightroom or photoshop app. This is also a feature on the older model and one of the reasons I’ll be picking this up
slicktoroid Ricoh did update the official app to work but don’t use that, someone who shoots with Ricoh cameras made a third party app called the Ricoh Viewer which connects super fast and downloads raw images in about 6-7 seconds per photo
talkdatrue try the Ricoh viewer third party app, I just used it on a trip and shot multiple photos to my phone in about 6 seconds a photo and open them in LR or Photoshop mobile for good quick post processing and right to my Instagram
Japanese Photo STAR , Daido Moriyama, was a big fan of the GR 1 and has shot more than a couple books with the mini film camera......I just ordered my first GR III used from Japan.....
Also annoying are "videos" that consist entirely of someone talking about a product without showing it in use. Who's the target audience? People who can't read?
I love to watch your reviews. In fact I was watching you 10 years back on daily basis and then I somehow stopped watching camera reviews, after I bought my DSLR.. Today I "rediscovered" your channel and its perfect to see you again 🙂also a bit of nostalgy, haha 🙂
Great video! I'm embarrassed to ask this but I'm a total noob. In your sample shots, you'd show something like "F10, 1/200th, 125 ISO" at the bottom of the screen. You had different settings for each shot. Can you recommend any books, blogs, or specific videos to help me understand what these settings mean and how to know which settings to use for different shots? Thanks so much!
I owned the GR and now I have the GR III. I absolutely loved the GR and I absolutely love even more the GR III. I think you should also mention that the files are more than good enough for professional purposes, e.g. print publications and web. I wouldn't compare this to a smartphone. No smartphone will ever take a photograph as good as this camera can. I just hope people don't obsess about the battery. So, what? I've never left the house without at least one or two additional batteries for any of my cameras (although as of today Ricoh batteries are not yet available). So far, the only annoyance for me as a long-term GR user is that the existing UWA adapter which I have for the GR will not work with the GRIII. On a visit to Seoul a couple of years ago I took two cameras, the GR and an Olympus XA. The GR mainly shot with the UWA and some of the photographs are just breathtakingly good. I admire Ricoh/Pentax for sticking with the formula. Small body, 28mm lens, familiar form factor - so many companies that take over other camera companies screw with the ethos but this has not happened here. If you class yourself as a serious photographer - enthusiast or professional - you really need the GR III to add to your arsenal.
Not had cause to test it yet in poor light. I did photograph music gigs a few times with the GR and as you say it is possible to pull something out but it takes work. I hope someone else can comment on this.
Thanks for a thorough real world review. Basically you can't make a big bright screen that gets up to 600 or 700 nits without some serious battery power - which this Ricoh does not have. The optical viewfinder really changes the look and feel of the camera. In bright sun the screen looks barely usable & seems to be worse than many smartphones. For a camera of that price the outdoor visibility issue would be a deal breaker for me. Years ago I bought a Samsung S3 Galaxy which was incredibly bad to use in bright conditions, it only had something like 325 nits when cranked up to full brightness. It was so bad that a month or two later I was so frustrated that I went and bought a Canon dslr & was far happier. I know the Ricoh is small but a Nikon or Canon dslr with a pancake lens, or even the kit lens, would be better than the Ricoh.
One of the best review formats - great video guys, keep this style for future camera / lens reviews! PS nice shots + loving the loose walk around real world hands on.
AS a former owner of a 35mm GR and the GRd mk1, seeing you using this latest model really gives me a warm glow (the camera, not you Chris..! ) The GR series have always been cameras mysteriously greater than the sum of it's part's, that really make you want to take it everywhere and shoot allsorts. For street photography it's the King, so discreet, subtle, yet fast and now with excellent image quality. And the mk1GRd was famed for it's film-like/noisy image quality which made it a bit special, and this mkIII looks similar. A bit expensive, but definitely a 'want' camera.
Beautiful camera for street. I use it 99% of the time one-handed and love my results! i will say this. I find it hard to use the snap focus as Im hopeless at estimating distance and if you get this wrong, your shot will be out of focus. Not an issue in good light though as you can use a higher aperture so more of the shot will be in focus.
I haven't used this camera, so I'm speaking generally here... The trick to shooting with a fixed focus distance is selecting a small enough aperture to provide deep depth of field. This way, you know in advance that any subject within a certain range of distances will be in focus. If you shoot with the aperture wide open, you will have virtually zero depth of field and most of your shots will be out of focus.
If they could not get a pop-up flash in there, they could have put a tiny front facing flash in the camera. Not as good as a pop-up version but better than nothing, at least you would have a flash in the camera you could use as a last resort. Seems like a important feature to have on this type of camera, sad they left that out. Nice review.
I've been watching your reviews for a while, Chris, and I really love the way you present cameras and equipment, and your genuine enthusiasm while doing what you're doing. Keep it up! Thank you.
I got the GR, than the GR2 when the GR died. It's addictive. Be careful, you will never leave it home. The GR3 sold well in Switzerland and some are coming on second hand market for a more reasonable price. I don't need to ugrade yet, the Gr2 is enough for me. If you buy one, be open minded. It has limitations, so you have to adapt. Once you're in this state of mind, you will love it. It makes you want to take photos.
Wow, at long last Ricoh actually got their camera into the hands of some top flight reviewers. Their launch was the most low key I’ve seen - almost as if they didn’t want to sell any.
I loooove this camera ! Also the previous models It’s compact, easy to use, beautiful and great colors !Not just for street photography but also for basically everything you can think of !!
Thank you for being honest about the video. I see people saying this has 1080/60p, but the samples are an aliasing mess. Ricoh didn’t even try with the video. It’s worse than the video on first gen Fuji’s.
Ryan Villanueva me too. If it was decent I would have bought it. Everything else is great or good enough (AF in low light). But the crippled video is a joke. I ended up just getting a Fujifilm X-E3 as my compact travel camera. Great stills and great video (both 1080 and 4K). And with the 27mm pancake lens it’s decently small.
I really enjoyed this review since I am one of the few people on this planet owning the Nikon Freak Cameras. The Df and the Coolpix A. Since my Coolpix A has a lot of Sensor Dust I am interested in an alternative with inbuilt cleaning. I guess the GR3 might be it. I really appreciate that you are also reviewing these not mainstream cameras because they are perfect tools for artists. Thanks for this review from Germany. Chris
Nikon A user #metoo :) Moreover, I have 2 of them. One is in use, the second waiting patiently for the first to die. As for other Nikons I'm also in love with my D800e. ;)
Wow it's good to hear there are still others using the Coolpix A. I got a black one when they had a clearance fire sale back in 2015(I wanted the silver one, but they charged $60 dollars more). To this day, I've never seen anyone else use the tiny Nikon. But then my GRii is my primary go-to snap camera, while the Coolpix A is used very sparingly.
@@izmargad Ha! Same here. Ricoh GR is my main everyday camera, and the Coolpix A silver I use sometimes. Lovely colors on the Coolpix A! On clearance sale I also bought a black Coolpix A, which is my spare one in case the first one goes AWOL. :-)
I still remember when the coolpix-A was launched. Unfortunately it coincided with the announcement of the Ricoh GR (1st version i think). After reading both reviews, the only notable feature of the Nikon was that it was priced far higher than the Ricoh. As everyone knows, since then the GR lives on in its various editions, whereas i've never met a single person or a secondhand shop having a Coolpix A, which says everything about its popularity (the lack of, rather). I think Nikon was very arrogant in their approach to marketing this camera and feel they deserved every bit of the failure which ultimatly resulted.
gemasboy Hmmm... But it’s not the camera‘s fault. I love the GR, but the Coolpix A also had a few tricks up its sleeves. For example, if has a dedicated focus ring around the lens. You can even use it as manual override using AF! With magnified focus area on the screen, if needed. Whereas the manual focusing on the GR is very clunky. Of course you’re right, during most of the time the Coolpix A had been sold on the market, its price point was almost ‚Leica-like‘.
Especially important on a camera with no optical viewfinder. In bright daylight, you'll be forced to keep the display on max brightness which will rapidly drain the battery while probably still be difficult to see.
I don’t take many shots when I got out, coming from years of using film when you only have 36 frames you are very particular about what you take this has carried over to my digital work, yesterday I was out for a while and only took three pictures, I use my GR3 a lot.
Yeah. I've had Ricoh cameras in the past. Very good quality and fun to shoot with but hard to recommend for that price, especially over the Sony RX100 cameras.
Hi, I'm a mobile phone camera user and I like the look of the Ricoh gr 111 for it's point and shoot feature. I have watched this very informative video and with great respect it was double dutch to me. I'm a newbie really. I'm a little confused about the Ricoh Gr 111 street edition and the Ricoh Gr 111 digital. What is the difference please ? I am in Ireland and I just looked up the prices and the digital is a good deal less expensive....
The Street Edition has a custom paint job, the optional optical viewfinder, (a US $250.00 option) a leather hand strap, and the full press snap option which can probably now be updated via firmware on the standard model. That's it, but you also get the bragging rights that you have a limited edition camera. ..Joe PS: Oh, yeah: the orange lens ring.
Looks awesome. The compromises they made were smart. Might make a great vacation camera too, when photography isn't the theme. In short, it doesn't really seem to have any competition. Maybe an E-PL9 w/pancake would be close, but still not as thin. How's the menu system? As good as typical Pentax?
It's a bit hard to justify when, for the same price, I could get an a6400 and throw my 16mm pancake lens on it if I need it to be pocketable. No shade towards anyone who enjoys the GRIII, but at a premium price this will likely stay a niche product for devoted fans
I have both and the GR is way more pocketable. The Sony is noticeably heavier and bulkier, although if I really want to, I can carry it in a jacket pocket. Even then the GR is better as it doesn't smack as hard into things and still has a lower profile. The GR lens is also much better than the Sony pancakes although I far prefer the Sony as a camera because of its fast shooting speed, eye AF, interchangeable lenses, better ergonomics, better ISO performance, tilting screen, amazing 4K, etc. But as I can easily keep the GR on me most of the time whereas I can't with the Sony, it's those times when the GR shines. Agree that it will stay a niche product as will most compacts since smartphones get the job done and sometimes better. My Galaxy S9 focuses much faster, shoots 4k60, is waterproof, even more pocketable, has a really bright large screen, isn't bad (though not good either) in low light, less conspicuous, and is on me whenever I go out. The GR still wins for its controls - though I'd gladly trade its vaunted snap focus for a manual focus control ring - and for satisfying the pixel peeper in me. Worth it for me but I agree that it won't be for more and more people and that does not bode well for the line.
@@jordanviray ya, wasn't meaning to imply that the a6400 would be as pocketable, simply that if portability is a factor in buying then the GRIII would get a "pretty good" while the a6400 would get a "good enough". Given all the other factors in the a6400's favour, "good enough" portability means I'll put up with the extra bulk for all the added features.
Given the sales figures, I think the market agrees with you. Regarding portability, they are both good but if we are talking about pockets, the GR is in another league. The Sony simply cannot fit in regular pants pockets or a napoleon pocket even with the unfortunately soft pancakes. The size difference doesn't seem all that much in pictures but in practice it's huge. The retractable lens is the key. I have jammed the Sony into cargo pants and it is very uncomfortable and difficult to remove and replace. It's the same deal with m43 and their pancakes although not as bad. Some day maybe Sony will release a slimmed down a6400 with a retractable lens as amazing as the GR's and I'll bet it would dominate the compact market. A full frame wide angle camera, even if it required f/4 to keep the size down, would definitely earn a sale from me.
I’ve had a GX200 for 10yrs and have just bought a Canon M100 with the 11-22mm lens. I wish Ricoh did a GX200 with an APSC sensor. I think it would be a winner.
So right on the Manual Focus Chris! This little camera is "Almost" perfect. I had the GRIII and agree that the auto focus is frustrating in low light, I found it hunted a lot and manual focus isn't useable. If the GR had a nice smooth focus ring on the front (not focus by wire!) , maybe with an indent or even a small "tab" for your finger, in combination with the OVF attachment. WOW what a camera that would be, even if a little larger! But then you could get a bigger battery in too I suppose.
I have a question about this camera. Atm I am working on Fuji system but I am missing something what is compact and I can go with camera in my pocket. Xe3 or xt30 are not working like that. And here is coming Ricoh GR III but also is there any other camera of this type with the same size of sensor ( I know that there is also Fuji XF10 ), or maybe I should concentrate on camera with m43 sensor? I am waiting for some advice but Ricoh GR III is very tempting.
Do the controls let you cycle through the snap focus distances without going into the menu? To instantly switch between closer shots and farther shots?
Yes absolutely! You can set a quick button and simply press and turn dial or push controls to change them fast. I'm pretty sure you can set the adjustment dial to do it as well.
Having the first GR by my side and doing some research on GR3. While watching this GR3 review, something irrelevant that keeps distracting me... Chris is so good looking! Sorry but I have to say it!
I wanted the GR I but picked up a used Nikon Coolpix A for a bargain. This looks great with USB-C and stabilization. Would definitely trade up the Nikon for something like this with a flippy screen and mic input
I'd def buy this camera, I understand the prime lens, but like the wide angle lens adapter, I wish it had an adapter that made it a little larger mm lens
I to this day still do not understand why they give the LCD screen resolution in "dots" on cameras..... Just tell us the actual resolution like 1080p 356dpi or something. "Dots" doesnt tell me anything!
Scott Tucker I also hate “dots” and wish camera companies would quit using it. To work your way back to an actual resolution (or PPI) you have to know the aspect ratio, and it’s just worthless all around. Unless we’re talking about dot matrix printers let’s leave “dots” out of it.
I love it! The best part is APSC sensor and sharp lens. It's missing focus ring, aperture ring, and viewfinder. It's perfect to carry around everyday. Video is bad but just use smart phone. Smart phone image qualities frustrates me. No matter how high tech you can't beat physics. But for video it's great, actually. I'm so glad Ricoh made it. I've been a fan of the GR 2. As a side note, I think the future of M4T camera lies in the miniaturization, small camera bodies that can switch lenses, which are also smaller, and with the way high tech can miniaturize things, it can be done. That whole GH5 thingie for video, it won't last. Eventually full frame will offer the same features and that's going to be the end of that. Do you have recommendations on camera cases and things to do to keep dust off? How well you think the sensor shaking feature is going to work? How do you think this will compare with the new Leica Q?
Great video! I just picked one up myself and am enjoying it a lot but I'm seeing one issue I can't quite figure out. Sometimes while framing or focusing, the preview image on the screen is much brighter than the image that comes out after I click the shutter. I'm used to the Sony A7 series where what you see is what you get, but I'm having a tough time figuring out what I'm doing wrong. Any ideas?
I just picked up a GRII for under $500 on Amazon. It's my first go at the GR series and I can definitely see the allure and cult following. Is the GRIII worth the extra cash? I'd love some feedback. Thanks!!
I think there's somethign wrong with my Ricoh GR iiix. It is taking terrible blurry low contrast photos no matter what I do! I've messed with settings and no answer. Can someone please look at the sample photos in the short on my page. I need help I spent so much money on this thing after watching this video!
Is there any compact camera that produces high quality jpeg out the box like GR3 , takes excellent macro shots and handles 1080p video as good as iPhone 11 Pro Max if not better?
I think better to compare with iphone 11, huawei p30 and pixel 4. Computational photography ie software adjustments and enhancements may have just surpassed conventional cameras. I have at least 5 cameras, various types but my Samsung phones captures equally good shots seen up to ipad size. I have never travelled without a camera, until 2 months ago, i did for the first time. Even though my phone is not the best or the latest, i felt i didn't missed out much except some creative shots not possible with a phone.
I have a few spare batteries. But I never use them. It charges very well off a powerbank. Its a good thing to have in your bag. Basically all I need is a powerbank. Extra sds. My bizcard and some water. And go all day long.
2 things: 1- Mayflower is still very visible in the US, and people are STILL pissed at them because of the Colts; 2- Anyone else notice the green splotches at 6:23? ..Joe
I've had the V2. Sold it few months after I got it. Menu are greats, so does picture quality. My main issues were : 28mm and no EVF. Same thing with a 35mm and an EVF (a removable one), would buy again. This V3 adds things people don't really care about (but the USBC). Image Stabilisation ? For a 28mm, really ? 24Mbps sensor...ok if you wanna crop. But all these ruined the battery.
I had the GRII....and won't be bothering with the GRIII. I replaced the GR with a Sony RX100 VI and this is what's better with the Sony: Amazing AF that is insanely fast and accurate, so much better than the GR. The IQ is really very close in practical terms. The Sony shoots 24 FPS and has FAR more custom features. The Sony shoots both wider and far longer, 24mm to 200mm, which means it can handle everything the GR can't. The Sony has a VIEWFINDER! It works great and shows you exactly what you're doing. It also has a flash that can be bounced. In PRACTICAL terms the Sony does much more than the GR, lands more keepers and is far more flexible. In certain cases the GR will do better because of the larger sensor, but try BOTH and you'll see that the Sony is excellent and just much more camera, even if you don't care about great 4K video! I enjoyed my GR, but the 28mm lens and lack of viewfinder along with so-so autofocus made it less than ideal. The Fuji X100f is actually nicer to use, but larger. The Sony will tick all of the boxes...and gets you a very sharp 24-200mm range.
Yes sony has more features, but the whole sony delivery is just dull, dull highly digital experience, thats what sony users like though, Sony really leans into the sharp, ultra digital aesthetic in its image quality and even camera design. Sony images are just too bland regardless of the sharpness and resolution, very digital and lifeless and i dont think that compares to the ricohs IQ , two different tastes though, theres photogs who lean towards the film look and then theres Sony users who are drawn to the ultra digital look. personally i think the ricoh wins that battle
@@eddiemadera3042 That's just pure nonsense. I'm a working pro, also shooting the D850, D5 and the A7rIII on occasion. No one can tell which camera shot what. Files from the A7RIII look the same as a D850. On top of that I recently shot the RX100 VI side-by-side with the D850 with my 70-200 FL at 200mm and same settings. The color profiles are VERY close and there's minimal difference in sharpness (Only DOF). Do you understand that the Sony shoots RAW? Sony and Nikon have the best color on the market, with the Canon and Fuji also having their fans. Ricoh is not even close to giving accurate color and even the RAW files need extra work. The GRIII is a terrible update.5 years and all they did was update the sensor. And they didn't even get that right.
@@robertbrody4032 being a working pro means absolutley nothing. Your taste is your taste, and obviously i disagree with your taste, i think sony and nikon have the most digital nasty color on the market, like i said your taste is subjective, i really probably wouldnt like your work based off of your inclination in gear, there are a lot of "working pros" with shit taste and shit opinions. I stand by what i said, i dont care about the griii, but the grii images are way better than anything i see coming out of that rx Sony with those nasty neon digital colors. I dont like canon either, the world is too saturated with canon digital images that they too have become too default and bland, i really only see fuji and Panasonic doing great things in terms of prosumer cameras. The a7iii is great in terms of sharpness and image quality, nothing wrong the that camera, i like some of the stuff shot with it, but it does have this wierd sort of cartoony , almost animated look like its a digital animation. Not my taste. Based on what you have said so far i can see that we are probably on opposite sides of the spectrum in terms of opinions and taste, i like capturing moody, gritty, imagery. you probably like capturing digital neon colors with vivid green landscapes. We probably wont see eye to eye, take care.
@@eddiemadera3042 LOL. It's not a matter of taste, it's a matter of science and math. Color accuracy is measurable. I've shot for Tiffany and boat shows. You can yell all sorts of nonsense, but Nikon and Sony and Canon are all capable of fairly accurate color. The Nikon D850 is famous for it as is the D5. Sony has created a very close match with the A9 and A7rIII. When you are paid large sums for your work, "taste" means nothing. You need results that will not create issues for the client. Ricoh has poor colors. Even DPreview pointed this out. You're obviously an amateur shooter, and that's fine. But next week I'm shooting a new line of jewelry and I can assure you that the art director is not interested in my "taste" in color. They want accuracy. So do birders and people shooting boxing and air shows. That's why Nikon/Sony/Canon are the top choices.
@@robertbrody4032 thats ridiculous, just because you do paid gigs makes you the arbiter of truth? Lol Of course not. Your work is constrained by many variables, you have to answer to an authority therefore your creativity is limited to the least objectionable programming, so its fair for you to use bland equipment to satisfy your commercial requirements, color accuracy can be measured sure, accurate colors dont mean pleasing colors, do painters use scientifically accurate colors? no. Mathematical color accuracy means jack shit to creativity and the beauty of an image, so then in this context it dwindles down to personak taste barring your commercial constraints of "accurate" color reproduction. i could care less if u dont like ricoh because the colors arent "accurate" but to say the sony rx has better images because it has mathematically "better" colors is ridiculous, the ricoh has better images, and frankly it doesnt matter you using the ricoh for these jewlery companies? Obviously not , the ricoh is a point and shoot meant to take great snapshots relatively casually and it blows sony rx out the water in its IQ
My problem is with the price. Here in Australia its priced the same as RX100 VII. I think spending around 1.5K on a pocket camera is simply stupid but if someone wants one sure they will pick the RX100 VII over GRIII

My favorite pocketable camera right now. Replaced Sony RX100 Va (not sharp enough, ugly lens flare effects in night) & Fujifilm X100T (not a fan of 35mm, too heavy to be actually pocketable) for me.
Jan Safranek which is better with image quality the Sony rx100m6 or the Ricoh gr3??
Inspired me to use my GR II again.
This thing is a tiny little monster of a shooter. A true model upgrade this time around. Love it.

How is the GR compared to the GRIII in indoors and low light. The GR takes a lot of work to pull off some indoor shots
AS a former owner of a 35mm GR and the GRd mk1, seeing you using this latest model really gives me a warm glow (the camera, not you Chris..! )
The GR series have always been cameras mysteriously greater than the sum of it's part's, that really make you want to take it everywhere and shoot allsorts. For street photography it's the King, so discreet, subtle, yet fast and now with excellent image quality. And the mk1GRd was famed for it's film-like/noisy image quality which made it a bit special, and this mkIII looks similar. A bit expensive, but definitely a 'want' camera.
Love the "The War on Drugs" music in the brewery. Seems like a lovely place.
If you shoot with the aperture wide open, you will have virtually zero depth of field and most of your shots will be out of focus.
freediverx This is pretty much what I said in my comment but thank you for the reply.
Keep it up! Thank you.
If you put it in your pocket you’ll most def end up with dust on the sensor or in the lenses. So don’t throw that Pentax case, you gonna need it!
Very interested to hear how it compares to the Fuji cameras in this category, but wish Jordan had at least talked about video autofocus
Wow, at long last Ricoh actually got their camera into the hands of some top flight reviewers. Their launch was the most low key I’ve seen - almost as if they didn’t want to sell any.
Well the GRiii sold out fast. "Cult" cameras don't need much fanfare at introduction.
I loooove this camera !
Also the previous models
It’s compact, easy to use, beautiful and great colors !Not just for street photography but also for basically everything you can think of !!
Never put this in a comment before but that guy is super easy on the eyes.. Wow! I'll be watching more of his reviews.
Thank you for being honest about the video. I see people saying this has 1080/60p, but the samples are an aliasing mess. Ricoh didn’t even try with the video. It’s worse than the video on first gen Fuji’s.
Rediscover Film Dang, I was hoping at least decent quality 1080p
You briefly mentioned your concern about the battery life, can you comment on how long (i.e. how many images you got) the battery lasted?
Especially important on a camera with no optical viewfinder. In bright daylight, you'll be forced to keep the display on max brightness which will rapidly drain the battery while probably still be difficult to see.
Nice review. Gives a really good feel for the camera. But for me, the lack of ability to add an evf is a problem.
"Jordan has some issue with safety and following the rules" lol that was funny!
I don’t take many shots when I got out, coming from years of using film when you only have 36 frames you are very particular about what you take this has carried over to my digital work, yesterday I was out for a while and only took three pictures, I use my GR3 a lot.
As an American I also haven't seen a Mayflower truck since I was a child (I am almost 30 now) and it brought me waaaay back.
Love this camera. But I think it's overpriced.
That's Ricoh, not Leica bad but they are pricey cameras. Luckily without the reliability issues of leica.
Yeah. I've had Ricoh cameras in the past. Very good quality and fun to shoot with but hard to recommend for that price, especially over the Sony RX100 cameras.
I got the Fuji xf10 for 350 pounds ... it does make the Ricoh look over priced if you ask me ✌️
Zulqarnain Aidil but the rx100 are also very overpriced....
Yes, the price horrified me when it was finally announced but I still bought it. (The marketing was very good)!
5:57 it looks like there is a lot of dust on the lens.
6:20 to 6:30 sometimes Chris mouth got green dots, quite strange artifact.
prnt.sc/nbhfmn
from 6:24 I noticed that too...I was gonna ask, if there is a problem with their GH5 camera.
It's probably a UA-cam compression issue
it appears to be gone for me, so I'm not sure what was up
@@JohnDoe-jp5py same here, kinda confused about what green thing he mentioned till I checked Acrin's link. No issue from my screen.
Im watching this on an iPad pro 2017 at full hd and I see no such thing as the screenshot by Acrin
That's it, but you also get the bragging rights that you have a limited edition camera.
..Joe
PS: Oh, yeah: the orange lens ring.
These guys are still making cameras! Props to 5:33 thats what cameras should be like well done ricoh
I haven’t seen the review yet but I can say: lack of a flash is the biggest cons of GR III. I am staying with GR II.
Yes. I loved the small flash. Ricoh should have provided a small slip on one. That is how some cameras come.
What would be amazing for this is a 90deg viewfinder that you can mount on the hotshoe and compose looking down
It's a bit hard to justify when, for the same price, I could get an a6400 and throw my 16mm pancake lens on it if I need it to be pocketable. No shade towards anyone who enjoys the GRIII, but at a premium price this will likely stay a niche product for devoted fans
Exactly, same goes with throwing on my Panasonic 14mm f2.5 on my GM5 and I’ve got a pocketable camera with evf..
plus you'll have tilted screen and mic input
Nice review but what about the 21mm GW4? Would‘ve been great to see some images from it since it enhances the camera a lot ...
So I'm sticking with the old Canon gx7 mark ii for a while 😊
SO am I!
This camera is perfect for me except for one flaw: Low Light Auto Focus!
And it's crazy how terrible manual focus controls are on 99% of modern cameras.
I’ve had a GX200 for 10yrs and have just bought a Canon M100 with the 11-22mm lens. I wish Ricoh did a GX200 with an APSC sensor. I think it would be a winner.
which one would you recommend Canon G5X Mark II or Ricoh GR II for everyday compact camera?
So right on the Manual Focus Chris! This little camera is "Almost" perfect. I had the GRIII and agree that the auto focus is frustrating in low light, I found it hunted a lot and manual focus isn't useable. If the GR had a nice smooth focus ring on the front (not focus by wire!) , maybe with an indent or even a small "tab" for your finger, in combination with the OVF attachment. WOW what a camera that would be, even if a little larger! But then you could get a bigger battery in too I suppose.
Why did they drop the flash? Stabilization won't fix when it is too dark. The Ricoh GR II has a TERRIBLE screen. I hope they greatly improved that.
So, should I stick to my GRii and not upgrade yet? As a non-pro. Thank you!
Do you think si It worth compare to the iPhone 12 Pro ?
In Japan, the Fuji x-100F has almost the same price than Ricoh GR3, but it has an hybrid viewfinder.
The Fuji is ten times the camera. It is simply better.
@@shigsho The lens on the GR seems better. I got a X100 and it is a tad soft open.
How did sticking that viewfinder on and turning the screen off affect battery?
Do the controls let you cycle through the snap focus distances without going into the menu? To instantly switch between closer shots and farther shots?
Yes absolutely! You can set a quick button and simply press and turn dial or push controls to change them fast. I'm pretty sure you can set the adjustment dial to do it as well.
Having the first GR by my side and doing some research on GR3. While watching this GR3 review, something irrelevant that keeps distracting me... Chris is so good looking! Sorry but I have to say it!
What would you prefer?
The Ricoh GR III, the Lumix LX100 II, the Sony RX100 VII or the new Canon G5X II?
It's difficult to make a right choice...
Tried the GR III and it was a big disappointment. Jpg colours are bad, battery life is terrible.
I wanted the GR I but picked up a used Nikon Coolpix A for a bargain. This looks great with USB-C and stabilization. Would definitely trade up the Nikon for something like this with a flippy screen and mic input
Used GRII is a great value.
Fuji XF10 it's half the price of the GRIII, and in my opinion, is an overall much higher price-performance ratio at this moment
No
I'd def buy this camera, I understand the prime lens, but like the wide angle lens adapter, I wish it had an adapter that made it a little larger mm lens
What if you want a camera like this but WITH good video capability. What would you recommend?? THANK YOU! Loving your channel.
I to this day still do not understand why they give the LCD screen resolution in "dots" on cameras..... Just tell us the actual resolution like 1080p 356dpi or something. "Dots" doesnt tell me anything!
Scott Tucker you are talking about dpi, Andres is complaining about ppl talking just dots without mentioning "per what"
Scott Tucker I also hate “dots” and wish camera companies would quit using it. To work your way back to an actual resolution (or PPI) you have to know the aspect ratio, and it’s just worthless all around. Unless we’re talking about dot matrix printers let’s leave “dots” out of it.
this used to be a dust sucker requiring repair or exchange of sensor etc. Is this one weather sealed?
Think i'll wait for the new iteration of the X100...
Got my GR today. It makes sort of rattling sound inside. Is it normal?
Yes, that’s the IBIS. Turn it on and it won’t rattle anymore (but you should be able to hear the stabilisation whirring of your out it to your ear).
@@Old_Man_Bridge thanks for confirming. Plan is to take the GR when I jog. Hope the IBIS can handle that kind of shake when it’s switched off.
Thank you so much for your review. As an amateur, I have my GRii among other cameras. And I am sticking to my GRii for a while!
I really like the output of this small pocket rocket, impressive!
Haven’t watched you guys in a couple years. Time to get back on the wagon
Thanks!!
As an official GR ambassador, it makes me proud to see this! 😎🤙🏻 Great vid!
As always, excellent review!
Chris... how's the Q fairing against the GRIII. I have the Q and the GRII and there shall be no doubt they are competing on each their platform :)
How long did it take to fully juice the camera in the car? Or with a power pack? any idea...?
Just got a used GR II. Happy with that.
Ricoh iii with wide adaptor or LX100 ii/D Lux 7 as first and only camera for skilled intermediate level person?
I think there's somethign wrong with my Ricoh GR iiix. It is taking terrible blurry low contrast photos no matter what I do! I've messed with settings and no answer. Can someone please look at the sample photos in the short on my page. I need help I spent so much money on this thing after watching this video!
imagine if the snap focus was a lever on the front like the Lomo LCA :)
Is there any compact camera that produces high quality jpeg out the box like GR3 , takes excellent macro shots and handles 1080p video as good as iPhone 11 Pro Max if not better?
Curious you don’t mention the Sony RX100vi, etc. Is it because it has a 1” sensor?
i never really got the fun of snapshot photography
results are impressive though
Great review guys,
I wonder how it would compare to a MFT camera with the 12mm 2.0, size wise and IQ wise?
The flash WAS handy in previous models. Leaving that off was a mistake. Oh well.
2 things:
1- Mayflower is still very visible in the US, and people are STILL pissed at them because of the Colts;
2- Anyone else notice the green splotches at 6:23?
..Joe
2- ja, they match the GR pilot light
Have you tried the lowlight autofocus with the new firmware update? it's supposedly solved the issue.
Did you notice The Second Cup Coffee Company? I like the candids and the gymnast on the table. Who has that in their videos?
Huh, I expected RX100 brought up as competition as well (IV or even V might cost around the same)
Klarden rx100 is a 1 inch sensor not apsc. Image quality is vastly superior on the Ricoh I’ve owned both.
@@cinemaheist8 Hm, good point
I hear it's one of the best black and white cameras on the market?
Love my Fuji XT 30 but it’s not pocket size and needs two hands to manipulate. I might just trade it in and give this Ricoh a try
My problem is with the price. Here in Australia its priced the same as RX100 VII. I think spending around 1.5K on a pocket camera is simply stupid but if someone wants one sure they will pick the RX100 VII over GRIII
Always been a fan of the Ricoh series
