The Ricoh GR III (3) - 6 Months Later - How has it held up and my settings

  • Its been over 6 months since I first started shooting with the Ricoh GR3 so I thought it was time for an update. The short story is that it has worked like advertised. In other words, lived up to its title, The Street King.

This is a re-upload after discovering an error thanks to a commenter. I had the settings all mixed up in my head and said ”snap focus” when I meant ”manual focus”.
Might not seem like a big deal and normally I might settle on adding a text or a comment but sometimes I just know it would annoy me so much that its worth losing the first couple of thousand views.
Sorry about you guys losing the comments you already had made, not to mention the congratulations I received. I was very grateful for those.

You seem to focus first on all the things that are right about a camera or piece of kit, where others are quick to point out only the negatives. Sometime it takes a little work to be happy, but in the long term it’s easier on you and everyone else. Thanks for your positive energy and optimism 🙏

I also use it every day since I got it in March. I really love it! The firmware updates also made a difference. But I actually had overheating issues in summer. In longer shoots, it shut down regularly after about 30 minutes (heavy shooting or direct sunlight) with a cooldown period. But other than that, it has been a breeze, and as you said, the WiFi-interface is the best I have ever seen. Cheers (and Congrats)!

Great review. Completely agree with your assessment. This is the camera I take with me when I don't want to take a camera with me(!) and I also slip it into my pocket to use when I am working (which is increasingly with a Fuji GFX50R, so it really is a testament to how useful this camera is). Like you I find the new buttons and features mean I have not really changed the default settings. Because Tav on the mode dial is missing compared to the previous GR I have U1 set up for 1/160 and f5.6 and auto-iso which was my Tav settings before. This is a camera which just works and works so damn well that at times I am left questioning why I have spent so much money on other cameras systems! The only thing I now want to add is the WA adaptor which I could not keep from the previous system. Thank you Ricoh/Pentax for the one camera they will have to prise from my cold dead hands!

    Hi Mattias!
Quick question, I'm dying to buy a Ricoh but trying to figure out between the GR 2 or 3
I guess sharp photos for quick street photography is my biggest priority
Is the GR 3 that much of an upgrade with Autofocus over the GR2? Or with Snapfocus it doesn't matter and just go with the Gr2?
Thank you so much man! Lobe the videos, so calming and Informative

Nice video. I always enjoy your content. I also find myself using my GRIII as my wide angle so I can keep a telephoto or zoom on my main mirrorless. In fact I used it that way yesterday on a hike. Much quicker and better than switching lenses. The only thing I miss when using the GRIII instead of my Sony is the AF and eye AF. But for landscapes and street the GR produces beautiful shots straight out of camera.

Mattias Burling well, for a first time Ricoh user it’s not so obvious; anyway apart from the shooting settings (aperture, ISO mode, AF mode, etc.) I was referring to the fine settings of the colours and saturation of the shooting mode you call Polaroid. I am curious about the fine tuning you set to achieve such a perfect Polaroid film simulation. Thanks

Hi Mattias, one last question ... I promise! Any tips to preserve battery life please ... starting to enjoy using this little beast, but the battery life is very poor and I don’t take hundreds of images. Tnx

Congratulations! *** RE the GR III: Any overheating issues? I've held back on the III--I own the II--because of overheating concerns.

Anyone else had slight anxiety when he revealed that lost screw? And also heaved a breath when he screwed it back in?

I never had any dust issue with it so it might. But then again, I never had any issues with the GRii either.

Superb photos! I owned my Ricoh GR I for 2 years and used only in good conditions (no rain, snow, dust storms )))) , etc.) but finally got the couple of dust particles inside the lens. Do you know, is it fixed in GR III?

Александр Савека I never had any issues with dust. But the griii has a dust off function.

Are the features of the GRIII a game changer compared with the GRII considering that battery life is significantly worst on the GRIII?
I'm looking to dive into the Ricoh cameras world and I need to known which one should I get.
This video was inspiring btw. Thanks Matt!

I recommend watching my other two videos on the GRiii, I talk plenty about it compared to the GRii. The battery isn't that bad imo.
