Super helpful. I’m a live player and I always am afraid of a muddy mix. Now I know I probably sounded pretty dry in the mix. Gonna crank them delayverbs up just a tad. Also you’re one of the sickest players on the planet. And a huge inspiration. Thanks for all you do! 🍻
Not only was this incredibly insightful with the context you provided but you are a seriously badass guitar player man! Very stoked to dive into your content 🤘🏻
I run two amps ("TPS Wet/Dry"). When I'm using delay I tend to turn down the reverb. Seems like a lot of delay and reverb at the same time just turns things to mush. I like either a lot of reverb, or delay with just a touch of reverb. But not a lot of both at the same time.
I like this format! Here’s an idea or a common practice or misconception, here are some thoughts on it and some quick examples and some food for thought. Now git and git to it! And getting to hear you play a little is always a plus.
Excellent point!!! I generally use a modest amount of reverb and delay for solos, in isolation it's obvious but in the track it is absorbed and just sounds full. Thanks again for all you do -:)
That was interesting I know it’s kind of a pain but lately I have been playing with a wet/dry rig so I feel like I can bump up the delay and reverb and still be able to rely on the dry amp to hold things together. I just want to say you have also sent me on a Michael Landau journey so thanks for that.
Hi Shawn, How do you manage getting around reverb / delay when recording over a pre-mastered track? I like to play over backing tracks, but always find that my guitar doesn't sit so well, not so much EQ, but it does feel out of place. When using effects it feels either too dry, or too wet by comparison.
Thanks for the great illustration - it really helps to hear the verbs/delays in context. Do you typically print the wet effects when you’re on a session? Does it depend on the producer?
Great content as always! Question: When doing guitar dubs, do you prefer using all your delays and verbs in the computer vs your Timeline or Flint on your pedalboard? ..and how are you getting the ping pong effect in the box? are you sending stereo from your pedalboard or just a mono from your pedalboard or Revv D20? Cheers Bro!
Hey Gary! If I want more control in post I'll run delays and verbs in the DAW but when I can, I prefer that everything happen "from the cone". I'm just running mono from the D20 and the signal is split stereo in parallel to the delays and verbs in the PT matrix. Hope you're doing well!
What reverb type/algo would you recommend to get that kind of sound? I have a source audio collider, which algo would you use? (In case you know the pedal)
Thanks Shawn. Super helpful and timely video for me. On a different but related note, I've been wanting to ask you about the way you dial reverse delays. I recall an old video in which you were breaking down one of your boards & had the reverse delay in the M9 dialed in a way that really complimented chords and notes in a great way without getting in the way. I've spent time trying to tweak mine but can't seem to get it quite where I want it. Any tips? Thank you!
Really cool video, even with your “terrible phrasing”! I’ve had sort of an opposite problem in the studio, where the recording engineer added so much reverb to my distorted solo tone during mixing (which I never seem to be invited to) that the distortion sound gets washed out and the guitar sounds too thin.
One anomaly I've found is I will spend a lot of time setting delay and reverb only to find out when I get in the live performance the room acoustics eat up most of the delay and verb, then having to compensate in real time which I don't like doing. Kind of the same thing as the mix issue except its hard to anticipate what a room is going to sound like.
Yeah that's a very common struggle. I think I just got used to dialing things over the years. I always went in knowing that I would most likely need to make adjustments.
gosh i hate you oin a nice way lol you are what jeff beck was to me when i started guitar I loved his playing and i tried and tired to do some of his things but then i just gave up and admired him and realize i cant do what he does.I try to grab some things here and there but over all i just sit back and admire.Love your sound that imo comes from the way you play.Precise note hitting like billy gibbons evh what is so great about them is the precise finger control.
Is it wrong I run multiple verbs ? Deep open shimmer post gain but pre mod dly etc, and just a bit of verb from the amp . The deep open is switched off for leads but the amp verb is (like my lil Klon clone at the front of my chain just a bit but )always on!
It's all good and well but the majority of us don't have the money for the fancy boutique pedals you're using. Why not demo on equipment most of us own?

Thanks, brighten to cut through, instead of increasing the mix, will try 👍
as always, loving the videos Shawn keep them coming
Thanks very much!!
Always Humble! Always GREAT!

For the most part I'll lean into one or the other as well. Thanks for chiming in!!
Hi Shawn from Alfred. Gave me something to think about now concerning reverb and delay. Thanks for uploading this video 😀
Thanks Alfred!!
I like this format!

Thanks so much John!!
Usually use more effect for rhythm playing and dryer for a solo parts to make them stand out.
Very enlightening Shawn.
Thanks for watching!

I would try using more repeats and a lower mix. Thanks for watching!
Thanks Shawn! I'll give that a try
what about live outdoors?

Yeah that can happen for sure based on the type and level of the verb used.
que plugins estabas usando para la reverb y el delay Shawn
??

I agree. I have trouble with this too especially in the room vs when people are in the room vs not in the room.
Yeah that's a very common struggle. I think I just got used to dialing things over the years. I always went in knowing that I would most likely need to make adjustments.
Would the same apply in a LIVE situation?
It would be much the same, but you would also take into account how each individual room you play in sounds as well.

Sure if I played as well as you I could get by with a dry tone, as it sits I need as much cover as possible to hide my sloppy hammer fisted noodles.

@@52Telefried correct! Beauty is in the ear hole of the beholder 🤘🏽
Layering reverbs is awesome!
Oh c'mon now.
Are you using too much reverb? No..ooo..oo..ooo
*Laughs in Goth*
Hey Shawn 👋 🎶😈🎶🎶👨🌾
Hey!!
Ha! No such thing as too much reverb unless the reverb is a sucky reverb (or you're using it on drums) don't do that 🤣
Haha, that's the truth!
