This movie belongs in my favorite subgenre of thriller where it's just the main character is in one location the whole movie where the entire plot is them just trying to leave
@zakubara4618 best example I can think of right now is redeye staring Rachel madams and cilian murphy. Doesn't exactly follow what I say in the comment but it's VERY similar to trap
The Trap is set for the viewer, you become weirdly attached to this serial killer, hoping at every stage that he escapes. Cooper laughing at the end is laughing at you the viewer because he knows he’s got you on his side
Sure, right before he turns again into a supernatural being that can just escape from an armored convoy. This movie is for the intellectually handicapped.
I agree with most of what you’re saying it’s a blast when it’s at the concert and when the clunky dialogue happens I was willing to let it slide because I was fascinated with Cooper just pivoting from escape to escape it was fun. However, for me the 3rd act just sucked. It becomes so stupid and too wacky for me. The IG Live thing, when lady raven talked like Cooper’s mom, his hilarious amount of escapes, his shirtless monologue lol. Still feel positive about the movie as a whole but that last 30-40 minutes were interesting.
As penguinz0 said "the facial expressions of josh hartnetts are crazy, there is no way not a single person thought, okay there is something off about that guy" but he also said that its a great movie and i think that too i loved it
His expressions are absolutely normal, you(and the youtuber you mentioned) only think they are weird because you are told by the plot that he's a maniac. But not surprising, penguinz0 has a lot of bad takes
I’m so glad you were honest and transparent about it! You could feel what type of film he wanted to do! Not EVERY film is out to get an Oscar or BLOW everyone’s mind. I really wanted to see this film because I was able to tell the film isn’t taking itself super serious from the trailers. Glad you felt the same! ✊🏽✊🏽✊🏽
Shyamalan wants to have a distinctive voice and dialogue style so badly that he ends up writing people who speak in a way that has no basis in reality. It's amazing.
Everyone on twitter dunking on your Letterboxd review only for you to give it a 4/5 on here and go in depth on it😭this is why I’ll never screenshot and get mad at Letterboxd reviews
Might have been said before me but "Old" is actually an adaptation of a 2011 French graphic novel. So not OC by Shyamalan but he does have a knack for picking interesting ideas. I kinda feel like he is to movies what Stephen King is to books (in a way).
Josh Harnett carries this movie so much with his acting, he's really good in it, and i think if the movie was only during the concert it would probably have ended better, still it's an okay movie
I really enjoyed this movie! When I left the theater there was so many people saying “this is the worst movie I’ve ever seen” and I was so confused? It’s not bad, it was fun!
I've seen people complain a lot about this film, but I loved it. It does have some plot holes/illogical turns, but it's so brilliantly casted and well written otherwise, that it didn't bother me too much. Like you mention, it also seems to have been done on purpose, to create comedy/a way into another great scene. I also really appreciate that tween girls are not written in a derogatory way in this film (as so often in society in general) - they are explored as real people, resourceful and funny. That they created a teen pop star and a concept for a concert that emulated fandom/concerts/real pop stars, was very true to life, imo.
I feel like the entire movie's aim was to build up tension and anxiety, using smart camera shots amd cold cuts, great acting, great unsettling score and just the anxiety of following what this monster will do to get out of this situation. I think it was very good, yes it's not perfect but i enjoyed it more than i expected.
Plot holes matter especially when the movie doesn't give you anything else to occupy your mind. Shyamalan might be a good premise guy but in recent years his execution has been severely lacking.
Actually quite like the camera angle, it's unsettling. The 2 shots of half of Josh Hartnett's face totally works for me too. Overall quite funny, it's like what I hope Madame Web is. A shlock that's a bad movie for the actual genre but funny enough to make up for it.
Loved the movie. It’s weird and outrageous but it’s so fun and new, kept me entertained and just waiting for what cooper was gonna do next. Great movie very original and refreshing.
Seriously, I loved it! It's not what I usually watch (SF & Horror) and I had no idea what I was getting into because I rarely watch trailers. I heard the title and the description in a "trusted" UA-cam video about upcoming movies so I had that title on my to watch list. I found myself rooting for him to escape, knowing that he was the butcher, then rooting for the singer and the abducted boy, and later for the wife. Loved it!
LOVED this - SO MUCH fun - felt like M Night Shyamalan channeling a batshit campy 90s Thriller in THE MOST entertaining & stupid & fun ways~ My best description I can think of to capture this thing would be calling it a combo of Brian De Palma's "Snake Eyes" and John Waters' "Serial Mom" - precision filmmaking in a claustrophobic thriller in a large public location (i.e. Sports arena), before descending into a twist-after-twist-after-twist cat-and-mouse Psychological Thriller in the 3rd act Karsten put it perfectly in here - if you think about the film's logic for even 30 SECONDS, it falls apart - but I was simply too busy having FUN with this thing to care~
When Josh Hartnett graces me with his presence, I’m watching. He delivered, as always. 😏 Any issue people have with this movie lies solely on MNS’s ridiculous display of his daughter’s music career.
I have two main issues with this movie. the first is that we never see him kill or really see his victims, crimes, and actions. I just don’t believe this guy is a killer it doesn’t feel earned when he gets caught because it doesn’t feel like a win. if anything I honestly feel sad that he won’t get to see his daughter again. my second issue is the amount of people crowding every area of this arena at all times during an active concert. have these people ever been to a concert? do they understand once the show starts most people are PLANTED? why are the halls constantly crowded and everyone seemingly taking crowd intermissions? how can all the seats be full when half the crowd is roaming the halls? the last time I left my seat during a concert in an arena like that I got from the very last row down to the empty women’s bathroom and got my ass all the way back up before the song even ended those halls were a WASTELAND
I never comment on UA-cam. But I want you to know that I'm so happy you said all that, that's exactly how I felt. I don't understand the bad reception this movie got. It was so much fun and sincere and funny and thrilling. Great, great movie.
Yeah dude, I don't think there's one opinion that you have that I've agreed with so far. But, unfortunately, you're the only youtuber who's sincere and interesting that still talks about recent movies, so I appreciate that
I'm gonna plug "Aiden & Antonio" who I've found to have interesting discussions on new movies. They might not be your thing, but if you can spare a couple minutes to check out one of their reviews it might pay off. Also they're new and criminally under watched compared to a lot of the insincere guys you alluded to, so I feel like I'm doing a good deed to mention them where someone might be interested.
I struggle to say that the movie is "filled" with plotholes. I feel like I can't think of a genuine part of the plot that is left dangling. Rather there's lots of options, like yes nothing ever comes of Raven's asthma, but like that's just one of many options of things he could use to attack her but it doesn't land on his path that's how I think it's resolved
How are his motives barely explored? His mother abused him. He sees himself as a monster. And monsters are supposed to be killed by a hero. He is the monster. He is the hero. What else do you need? Why do you need it? Do you ask a person that loves you: "why do you love me?"?
Hubs and I love it. So much fun watching M Night’s take on the thriller genre with its tongue in cheek screenplay and over the top brilliant campy Hartnett performance. A fun ride!
Shyamalan simply got lucky his awkward, terribly wooden style of writing dialogue by pure coincidence lined up perfectly with a sociopathic serial killer....
I just watched this movie today and I love it. I don't know why so many people were giving bad reviews. And contrary to popular opinion, I actually enjoyed the second half of the film more than the first half. The concert kinda made me cringe. The music was great though. Yes, Josh had to carry this film and he did an amazing job, but him having to carry the film doesn't make it a bad film. He actually made this film good. His ability to act as a convincing psychopath was bone chilling. His calm and cool attitude, and that smile... He should get an award for his role in this film. He did say he studied the Hare Psychopathy Checklist and damn it shows. As for "The music wasn't great", i would've thought so too if I only heard the music in the film, but I listened to the actual album and for an artist that I've never heard of, she is incredibly talented as a composer/songwriter/and vocalist. There are some really interesting instrumental pieces in songs like "Save Me" with the trombones or trumpets. The arrangements were good.
I miss the Karstcast Moviecast sooooo much. It would be great to have at least one episode every two months or so. It had a really good run and I'm still holding out hope it can come back : )
Finally found a video that does not come down on this movie. I actually loved it and because of this video, finding somebody who liked it too, I think I may like this channel.
The critique of Josh Hartnett’s delivery being intentionally cringeworthy and off putting because his character is a monster who is trying so damn hard to be a man is interesting and definitely introduces a different way of looking at his performance…but that doesn’t excuse everyone else’s performances from being completely lackluster.
Yes. 1:50 I totally understand that reference. 2:01 It was surprisingly well done, I thought it was over at the halfway point 😮 Had me going *dafuq is happening?!*
Nothing half good about Last Jedi or Indy 5. Absolutely baffling how the few people who actually saw them, at THIS point and considering the "popularity" of Disney, can think they're anything more than dumpster juice.
@@reservoirdude92 there are a lot of really great scenes in both movies imo, plus some good story elements, but there are also terribles one too, so kinda like this movie
I think everything Shyamalan is doing here is completely intentional and it works brilliantly. Hartnett absolutely makes this movie, his performance is so intrinsic with the film. Everything about the film has this awkward, uncomfortable energy, it puts us right in the headspace of the killer so that even though he's a little underdeveloped, we still feel close and the story becomes far more personal. It almost makes you root for the killer even though realistic we should want him to get caught. We need more of this Shyamalan, he's at his best when he takes a simple premise and injects his signature style into it and not solely trying to just one up the audience at every turn.
great review man. it was definitely weird from the dialogue to the camera angles. I think it all truly helped shaped this movie. Do I think it's a 10/10 movie? no but I think it's a helluva smart idea turned movie - even to the point of him trying to help his daughter rather that be her music or acting career. I would definitely watch again... properly not today or tomorrow but definitely in the future. My honest opinion would be around 7/10. What I liked the most was the awkward camera angles/ main guy trying to be sneaky obviously when you could tell he was up to something. What I didn't like- was it didn't feel put together like everything went well but it just seemed like it was missing something.
The first half's cooper's interaction with jody's mom reminded me of American Psycho 😂😂... I loved the second half just more... Josh Harnett killed it in this one
0:45 I definitely agree that M Night is very creative, but I thought it is important to mention that old is an adaptation of the graphic novel Sandcastles.
*For the record, I enjoy most M. Knight movies* "Plot holes" are one thing...when the base premise doesn't work, the movie doesn't work. The feds would not, and legally COULD NOT, endanger a stadium full of people AND YOUNG CHILDREN in order to catch a criminal 🙄
I think this is in the Unbreakable universe. Another big clue was the color scheme..... Unbreakable blue, Split, Yellow, Glass Purple,.....Trap Red. Almost every scene had a red tint to it. After I saw it again I started to notice a lot of hidden elements of the Unbreakable universe.
"A million plot holes... but M Night Shyamalan realizes this." Pretty sure, he's always realizes this with most of his filmography. He just simply does care enough to fix them.
This is a great movie! The first shyamalan movie that works with a real plot twist which is having no plot twist. It's amazing how he forced me to waste my time until the end. So much art.
Something that I think would have worked better, is instead of a concert….it was a sporting event. It adds the clock into the equation. He only has so much time to find a way out. The clock counting down and I think the whole movie should have been in the stadium. But I liked the movie.
No movie that has this many plot conveniences can be considered good, and to say the movie is "high" feels like a cope to mask those issues. There is nothing to establish that this movie is trying to be otherworldly. Maybe he is just a bad writer?
I kinda saw it coming that the father, Cooper, was the serial killer when he talked to the employee that the concert was a trap set up for him. But I think the movie is still fun and enjoyable to watch. At first I thought, "okay, this guy is the killer, and plot twist being is that everyone else knows already". He seems like a weirdo and look like one of those bad guys who would end up caught, but turned out to be a great escapist. I love this movie.

I agree bro

This movie feels like it was written by a third grader
I argue it's believable because his dad stuck with his daughter Justin Bieber-esk show, anybody go insane like that
I’m so glad you were honest and transparent about it!
Whatever anyone says, Shyamalan is one of the few directors nowadays who has the balls to make new stuff instead of stale franchise films

It really did give off the impression that he hated it
Also lets not pretend that bashing did not influence his review
I’m just in awe that people actually care enough about other people’s Letterboxd reviews to get upset over them 😭
Him comparing the movie experience to being high was exactly how I felt...
I’d say this movie is “campy”
You trapped me in your boiler. Help.

Josh Harnett would make a better Doom than RDJ
Might have been said before me but "Old" is actually an adaptation of a 2011 French graphic novel. So not OC by Shyamalan but he does have a knack for picking interesting ideas. I kinda feel like he is to movies what Stephen King is to books (in a way).
Saleka’s music was incredible and she has so much talent. The lyrics were written to complement Cooper’s life experience and events.
I agree
Actually quite like the camera angle, it's unsettling. The 2 shots of half of Josh Hartnett's face totally works for me too. Overall quite funny, it's like what I hope Madame Web is. A shlock that's a bad movie for the actual genre but funny enough to make up for it.
Loved the movie. It’s weird and outrageous but it’s so fun and new, kept me entertained and just waiting for what cooper was gonna do next. Great movie very original and refreshing.
Now I'm sold.😂 I want a Shyamalan film that knows it can/will be silly and awkward. If you're gonna be high, then embraced the goof!
"have you ever been high?"
Is it me or is PG-13 horror/thriller fare almost more fun than R?
Tbh yeah we never see the kills only hear them it adds a more creepy atmosphere to everything
Loved it!
LOVED this - SO MUCH fun - felt like M Night Shyamalan channeling a batshit campy 90s Thriller in THE MOST entertaining & stupid & fun ways~
My best description I can think of to capture this thing would be calling it a combo of Brian De Palma's "Snake Eyes" and John Waters' "Serial Mom" - precision filmmaking in a claustrophobic thriller in a large public location (i.e. Sports arena), before descending into a twist-after-twist-after-twist cat-and-mouse Psychological Thriller in the 3rd act
Karsten put it perfectly in here - if you think about the film's logic for even 30 SECONDS, it falls apart - but I was simply too busy having FUN with this thing to care~
When Josh Hartnett graces me with his presence, I’m watching. He delivered, as always. 😏
Any issue people have with this movie lies solely on MNS’s ridiculous display of his daughter’s music career.
Trap was strange, but it was nice to see Josh Hartnett on screen again.
Karsten Runquist, amazing content keep up the fantastic work
Old is loosely based on the graphic novel Sandcastle by Frederik Peeters and Pierre Oscar Lévy, so no he didn’t come up with the beach concept.
M Night has a great sense of humour that nobody seems to get. Like, do people think that Lady in The Water was supposed to be serious?
the wholesome relationship with Riley really takes you off guard and the panoramic shots used really amps up the tension.
This was my exact response to this movie. Went in no expectations shut my brain off. Hell of a fun little ride.
What broke my brain is that this is what a 4 year old thinks a police investigation is like
I struggle to say that the movie is "filled" with plotholes. I feel like I can't think of a genuine part of the plot that is left dangling. Rather there's lots of options, like yes nothing ever comes of Raven's asthma, but like that's just one of many options of things he could use to attack her but it doesn't land on his path that's how I think it's resolved
I agree
How are his motives barely explored? His mother abused him. He sees himself as a monster. And monsters are supposed to be killed by a hero. He is the monster. He is the hero. What else do you need? Why do you need it? Do you ask a person that loves you: "why do you love me?"?
How does the abuse cause him to see himself as the hero? He seemed more like a victim the way he talked about it
Hubs and I love it. So much fun watching M Night’s take on the thriller genre with its tongue in cheek screenplay and over the top brilliant campy Hartnett performance. A fun ride!
Thank god I’m not the only one that likes this movie
Shyamalan simply got lucky his awkward, terribly wooden style of writing dialogue by pure coincidence lined up perfectly with a sociopathic serial killer....
:D :D :D:
This commentary was so funny bc the “everything being off” is so true ……. “There might be costumes and things”…. I LOST IT
"the only coverage they shot for that scene" is so real, so much of this movie felt like they didn't get enough coverage LMAO
had so much fun watching this movie, idk his movies are so funny, have a blast every single time lol
Holy moly! I didn’t think you give it a 4/5. I agree with your points on this film and love this review.
Old wasn't original. It was an adaptation of a graphic novel
Dude you put my thoughts into words 100% agree with every word
Ps Thank you for “getting it.” It’s a wonderfully campy movie, even with the miscasting of Saleka.
You are the fantano of movies
Shyamalan didn’t come up with the premise for “Old.” It’s based on a graphic novel which is excellent and worth checking out.
If trap broke your brain then you must think that Jurassic park is a horror movie
Dang I was really waiting for you to tear this movie to pieces!!
Yes. 1:50 I totally understand that reference. 2:01
It was surprisingly well done, I thought it was over at the halfway point 😮
Had me going *dafuq is happening?!*
1:28 put this movie in the same category as the last jedi, indiana jones 5, and recently megalopolis, half bad and half good movies
We need more of this Shyamalan, he's at his best when he takes a simple premise and injects his signature style into it and not solely trying to just one up the audience at every turn.
it would have been better categorized as a comedy/thriller bc this movie had me and the whole theater dying
great review man. it was definitely weird from the dialogue to the camera angles.
I wish it was better since the premise is a really good hook
A movie so unapologetically dumb it makes you wonder if you’re the dumb one instead.
I thoroughly enjoyed it. Yes there’s flaws but there are in EVERY film. 8/10 for sure
That second trailer is so good, I think about it often
The first half's cooper's interaction with jody's mom reminded me of American Psycho 😂😂... I loved the second half just more... Josh Harnett killed it in this one
This movie was so fucking fun, i love a wild ride and this was that
0:45 I definitely agree that M Night is very creative, but I thought it is important to mention that old is an adaptation of the graphic novel Sandcastles.
قمت بمتابعة الفلم بالأمس 😍🔥 يارجل منذ مدة طويلة لم اتابع فلم بفكرة جديدة غامضة مشوقة رائعة وبدون اي مشاهد مقززة وخالعة فلم رائع جدا
Am I the only one who was vibing to every song?
This movie has it's flaws , but it was enjoyable. A sequel in this universe would be cool.
incredible how much twitter was bitching about a joke
Old was an adaptation of a comic
I hope there's a sequel. Josh was great
*For the record, I enjoy most M. Knight movies*
"Plot holes" are one thing...when the base premise doesn't work, the movie doesn't work.
Why are we not having a conversation about the main role of the profiler played by Hayley Mills!
Miss Bliss!
"A million plot holes... but M Night Shyamalan realizes this."
Pretty sure, he's always realizes this with most of his filmography.
But I liked the movie.
this movie was so good ! the best one i seen this year
Just watched it and loved it 👍🏻
No movie that has this many plot conveniences can be considered good, and to say the movie is "high" feels like a cope to mask those issues. There is nothing to establish that this movie is trying to be otherworldly. Maybe he is just a bad writer?
Trap made me feel some way... new favorite movie would watch again.
