Actor John Williams got around back in the day. He was William Shakespeare in a one hour Twilight Zone episode which also had a young Burt Reynolds in it and also was the murder victim in a Columbo episode. Got an old movie here called THE GOOSE-STEPS OUT that has an appearance by Mr. Williams and he can be seen in the Jerry Lewis film VISIT TO A SMALL PLANET. As for Maestro Ozawa, have a few of these recordings on their original issue label. Great Stuff.... THANKS DAVE...
You mentioned the sonics of the Orchestre de Paris, and it gives me an idea: sometime, it could be worth talking about recording sonics, audio engineering, and physical acoustics (as presented in a recording). I think this is something we don’t always pay attention to, even though it can have a huge effect on what we’re actually hearing!
Thanks for the review. Glad to have this and the Sony Japan reissue box of his work on Columbia Masterworks and Sony Classical. Sorry the Philips and DG sets are tough to find now.
Only last year Ozawa was left in tears following a performance of Beethoven's Egmont which was broadcast live to outer space, for astronaut Koichi Wakata on the ISS. Happily still with us those dear romantic souls!
@@jakovskok1465 Well, I was mistaken. It was two years ago, but I'm sure that many do recognize the non-acceptance of heroic materialism to surpass romanticism as it was and still is known. That is what emphasizes the individual, the subjective, the irrational, the imaginative, the personal, the spontaneous, the emotional, the visionary, and the transcendental. Do keep up with the orchestra
Hey Dave, could you talk about the new Lars Vogt Box? It's just come out on Warner, I'd love to hear what you think about Vogt and his artistry. Also since he recently left us.
This was a really nice walk down memory lane. I won't buy the box, but I certainly wouldn't tell someone else not to buy it. I've forgotten how good those early Chicago items really were. Funny how all the Chicago recordings I really like weren't conducted by a man who's last names starts with 'S'. And they're usually recorded somewhere other than Orchestra Hall as well.
I really like this set for the variety of repertoire it contains. No Beethoven or Brahms here, but a lot of interesting selections. And way more hits than misses, in my opinion.
@@jesus-of-cheeses I really do not know. I've had this box set for many years (if I'm not mistaken, I bought it as soon as it came out), but I can't find reviews for some of the recordings contained there and I would like to know more opinions.
@@compositortiagoprado I think it makes sense to go through the Phillips+complete DG+Decca boxes, as the next box we see will probably be an überbox of all three.
Dave great quoting that commercial with the “Polovtsian Dances by Borodin” 😂😂😂. It’s indelibly burned into my brain.
That commercial can be found on UA-cam, if you care to enjoy it again.
With John Williams who is so wonderful as the detective in Hitchcock's Dial M for Murder.
And briefly he was Mr. French in the 60s sitcom Family Affair.

@@FREDGARRISON Let's not forget John Williams as part of the stellar cast of the great "Witness for the Prosecution" ('57).

Thank you, Dave, for fulfilling the request! Maybe the Sony/BMG box some day. 😉 And yes, the complete DG is long out of print.

It's coming. Just finished going through it.
Got this on eBay second hand for about 32 dollars, very happy to have it!

Still excited for this pletnev rach concerto release to be reviewed by the big man...
Thank you for talk about this box. Could you talk about the othe Ozawa box "The Philips years"?
Those are all reviewed at Classicstoday.com.
@@DavesClassicalGuide Thank you very muchh. I will look.
It is ripe for reissue, though, is it not?

I don’t think it’s still around. it’s sold in very few places at more than twice its original retail price.
Weissenberg performed the Gershwin in Berlin with Karajan of all people at around the same time and it was not a happy occasion
Are you allowed to play clips of any of these recordings, or will you get a copyright strike?
I am not allowed.
