Thank you so much man. You’re a literal lifesaver. I had a bridge project for school, and the first one I made failed. I tried yours, and it held the maximum amount of weight required and didn’t even start bending or cracking. Thank you so much for this design, you just got a new subscriber!!
Hey man I followed this video and then added on to it for a college math class project, I'm a sophomore in high school and we put a weight bar on it and kept adding weight to it and it did not crack or bend or snap at all, all the way up to 305lb that's all the weight we had and nothing happened to it,😀 thanks for a great bridge it got me first place in class and i have it hanging up in my room now because it's not broken or damaged at all😀😀
Hi bro actually ibtried this model for a fest in our college and the result was amazing . This bridge was able to hold wieght upto 92kgs. Actually we had weights upto 92kgs only . And the surprising thing was this bridge didn't even bend at 92kgs. Our sir told this bridge would easily hold weights more than 100kgs . Bro please make another video but this time keep the bridge span between 50-70 cm span.
This bridge was designed with 104 sticks but 8 sticks can be removed from the compression chord which is at the top side of setup #2 or the bottom of setup #1 without affecting the capacity by much. Currently there are 18 sticks there including one at each end of the bridge and the remaining 16 sticks are placed in 8 groups of 2 which can be reduced to 8 individual sticks instead.
thank you very much.you deserve a like and a subscribe from me.im having a a project to do online for school.and it has to be able to hold 50 lbs.so thanks to you i might even beat my teachers design :D. you truly are a legend
Hello, thank you for this tutorial, one question though, should there be any changes to the structure of the bottom if the load will be applied to the base (longer side of the bridge) through some sort of weights on a hook? should i glue more sticks in an X manner, or is there a better way?
Arches will go into compression which means that it should be sized up in a way that it is not slender and to be braced laterally along the length to avoid an early buckling failure. There should also be a tie element (will go into tension) that connects both ends of the arch to stop the arch from opening.
Loved the video. But i have a question, how many popsicles where needed for the bridge u created? Edit:Sorry for the late question. This is asked 4 yrs later. its for a school project and we just have 50 popsicles:(
@@StructurePlanet Thanks for this helpful video btw and I am currently doin' this rn for our project. I hope what I make can withstand a 10 kg load ahaha
5:52 if there is compression upwards and tension downwards, why is there still compression upwards and tension downwards when the bridge is flipped at 6:00 ? should it not be compression downwards and tension upwards when the bridge is flipped? please explain i do not understand.
Assume that this is a beam and load is applied downward. So for a simply supported beam which is bending downward, tension will be at the bottom of the section since the bending alongates the tension side and shortens the compression side.
I would consider the few times you stood on the bridge more of impact loading and not fair to your work, bridges are not designed to take on max load in an impact way, they are however great at handling load that is slowly added and stable, a bridges strength resembles exactly the strength of a chains weakest link.. I really feel this bridge could have easily handled 300lbs if applied correctly, just my stupid opinion, I am no engineer.
Thanks for pointing this out. It actually took me a while to break it but I included the last segment only. Also, the weight will be initially concentrated in front of the foot which makes things worst. It just that I didn't have any other way to load test the bridge. My guess is also that it could have taken much more if the load was applied more statically.
I have not used it but I would just do a quick test by gluing two sticks together (1/3rd of lengths overlapping) and try to separate them by pulling it from both ends in the same direction as the sticks. If it gets separated easily, it is not a suitable glue.
Well, it is a balance between how much material is being used vs. how strong the bridge would be but at the same time it is important to have stronger elements where there will be more force in the member and lighter sections where there is less force in the element.

Hey one question, could I add more sticks to cover the blank spaces and it would still work the same?
On the top and bottom blank spaces or the sides?
@@StructurePlanet top and bottom
It will have no effect on the capacity.
Thank you soo much..we have done this today and we received 2nd prize..it almost carries 60 to 65 kg of weight

thankyou so much!!! this has really helped but there is only one issue, just wondering hwere i can get a paper step by step copy or if there is one.

Do you think I can make this using 116 pieces of popsicle sticks or do I need more
This requires 104 sticks.
@@StructurePlanet thank you so much
did you glue it to the boxes and how long is it ad how many sticks did you use
I didn't glue it to the boxes and used 104 sticks. I think the length is being showed in the video.
StructurePlanet ok thanks and does it matter if the original layouts are a little different and not symmetrical?
nicee video!!! what is name of the truss design you used ?
Thank you! If you load the truss like the thumbnail picture, you can call it an inverted truss bridge.
dude thanks man i'm going to pass because of you.
Glad that it helped you!
I think last load was not symmetrical and since you suddenly held up your left foot right one worked like an impact load.
Possible. In fact I repeated this few times but the clip shows the last try only. I think the joint got loose after few tries.
Can we make this of straws. If yes how much do you think will it lower it's load capacity
?
I dont think so

can it work as well with elmer’s glue? my assignment requires only elmers
