that Fibonacci bridge is a work of art!
If you're referring to the third bridge... Yes, it truly was a work of art.
Catenaria
You mean one half of the flower of life bridge! This geometry has been found inside ancient temples built more than 5 thousand years ago, it’s also a natural pattern found in nature.
That 3rd bridge is amazing. Even after failure at the end, the rest of the structure is still intact. But the 4th one remains usable even after massive damage. Amazing.
the 4th is the bridge you'd want to go over since you will be able to see without a doubt that it is starting to break and can still put twice as much load onto it before it actually does
The panel from which the weight hung is the one that resists, instead of the pasta structure!
The red board was just over the edges of table but not on the first one. I didn't care for the woman doing the test. Even doing more damage to the bridge afterwards. I would want to inspect the damage for at least a few minutes.
Mine would've been jerry rig-a-tonied
The 2nd needs to be thrown out of the course for not making it big enuff for the piece of wood! The thin one and the black one also for having no idea on how to design!
The pouring of the water adds extra perssure temporarily because of gravity, she should have been gentler in adding the water. No?
Because of inertia, not gravity, but yes she is skewing the results. A lot.
@@DavidFerree54 you're right, inertia. I thought this was wonky. --
Is obviously speed up for showing purposes, the video would be way longer otherwise
@@KiyoKiyoshi277 I can't do a face palm picture here, or I would, lol. No, the part of the pouring of the water is not sped up.

It's really interesting to see how many of these peoeple focused so much on reinforcing the structure itself, but completely overlooked the edges.. Which in the end, is what really carries the entire load..
I guess they only counted for where the load would be
There’s probably rules about how far over the edge you’re allowed to go.
right! see how the first bridge broke - basically the red support structure slipped from the table - experiment setup is a total fail.
I was thinking the same thing.
i also did that. usually the wooden board to which the bucket is attached should be shorter. plus some teams used more spaghetti and went far over the edge. they should weigh the bridge or give a limit for number of spaghetti used.
As an engineer who had to do something similar in university. These bridges are not only structurally sound, they are beautiful!! WOW !!! wow oh wow. To all those students who built these bridges WELL DONE !!! I have never felt so good about the future of structural engineering.
.
Uhmm as a side note to the pasta company. Errr pasta is best when it is soft and pliable (even before being placed in hot water) - are you sure this is good advertising?
1: How are these structurally sound when you have a surface load the size of the entire road (not realistic and kinda cheaty)
2: This wasnt an add for fresh pasta.
@@mick0matic dead loads apply on the entire span but that is not why the bridges are unrealistic. They've went overboard with the materials and this is more of an art exhibit than an engineering one.
@@mrinalkumarravi8820 I think maybe the scope of the assignment has been lost on you
You must be a Minnesota bridge builder. Lol
The one at 2:32 was really cool and it didn't use the boards. But couldn't figure out how it comes together in the middle.
it wasnt suprising that the one bridge that was actually shaped like cosh won. not only chain curves are naturally the strongest, they also used muscles to make it stronger.
She is giving a lot inertia to the water ,when she is pouring
Or impulses
More like she doesn’t give a shit for those projects.
Momentum*
An impulse is a change in momentum
They’re the same difference
Thats the real word scenerio tho...
Somethimes wind make the bridge have too much pressure
At 4:48 if you slow the video down you can see that the tables are supporting most of weight when it breaks by how it catches on the table before being pulled down. By the weight distribution block spanning the entire length it is transfering some of the load to the table and throughout itself rather than testing the true strength of these bridges. The bridge supported from the center was a more realistic load and at 8:56 the new weight distributor was shorter and didn't allow the table to support the weight resulting in it breaking much sooner. ~Coming From an Engineer
The table is not really supporting most of the weight. Those red rubber mats are flexible and will distribute the weight on the bridge. The amount overlapping on the table is negligible. That said I agree it shouldn’t touch the table.
@@lidoz Agree with you but those rubber (or whatever material they are) mats shouldn't be there. The mats may be, or not, touching the table, they may be off center on the bridge and they distribute the load in an unrealistic manner. Bottom line take them off and test the bridge with only the materials it is supposed to be made of, that is: Spaghetti.
@@silverglass6635 Depends on the bridge type ,I would say. Most older bridges have connection points that can be similar to Rubber mats, basically Clay and Dirt that supports A and B. Not everything is built with stone and anchoroed properly on both sides when its duty is merely to work for the purpose.
Very good catch! The result (let alone winning!) should be disqualified! Where I participated the weight "distributor" wasnt even a distibutor just a 10cm by 5cm block of wood with the hook and we had to incorporate that into the design. This way the pasta holds everything! And there were teams achieving north of 550 kilos of weight holding! (not us :D )
It annoys me how many people didn't pick up on the fact that most of these where basicly tested differently 🤣

Also, totally disregarded the importance of being precise in science.... Her students were measuring carefully and there she goes slapping them on the hand for taking the time to be accurate....
but she does it to all of them so it is fair
@@excalybyr1 that's not true, if she was using the exact same force and angle for each one of them, then yes but she's not.
This was basically a test of how much shear force a few spaghetti can withstand against wooden table edges... less of the structural carrying capacity.
Also that Lady: „Let me destroy this spaghetti thingies here real quick, I leaved the iron on the power supply“

The failure point for 4:38 seems to happen from sharp edge of the table, taking that into account in next build will get it much farther.
Testing is flawed as the bridges failure point is based solely on the shear resistance of the ends of the bridge. Lots of fun though, the easy winn is to take all your material and laminate them into heavy beam work and cross bracing to lay the load stick onto.
Came here for the same thing, they eliminated the bend force.
that's what I was thinking the whole time. Not the best test.
would've been nice if the weight of each bridge was displayed as well....gotta know how much material was used to make the bridge vs how much weight the bridge can support without showing any signs of structural failure.
This was a project that I used to do with my 6th grade enrichment classes. We used a set number of toothpicks and white glue. The whole school would witness the load-bearing competition. The kids learned a lot about how bridges are built, and especially the importance of triangles!

This is NOT a valid test of the design integrity of the truss. Each truss failed in the same place each time: where the sharp edges of the wooden beam rest.

I was a biology major in college . I signed up for a physics class only to find out it was specifically designed for engineering majors. The professor told me I can take the course and he’ll give me some slack on the exams . We all had to build bridges out of balsa wood sticks and do the same stress tests as in this video. Out of 20 of the engineering students bridges , mine ( a bio major ) came in 2nd !!!!!!
That third example was quite beautiful🙂
Like the fan of a peacock.
Quite a work of art 👍🏻
Very effective as well as visually impressive too.
The application of water however, was far too vigorous in my opinion and probably caused premature failures in at least some of the examples.
I dunno why youtube recommended me this but this is amazing
the lady poured the water in such a way that its force exceeded its mass by at least a factor of 2.
Excellent to see so many young women taking part in engineering! 🧡
Yes, though this is at the School of Architecture. Probably these are all freshmen; it's a common freshman exercise in many engineering/architecture schools. It's a great way to encourage teamwork and get the new students to think hard about structures, loads, forces; and debate and discuss within the team which approach is the best. And it's fun!

I don't know how this got in my recommendations, but this is a stellar video!
5:35 guy in background makes the bravest move of his life.
I like how the first guy took forever and was very gentle with his baby and then the teacher took over and was like "out of the way kid, we don't have all day."
The contest idea is great, but I must say that if teacher didn't have a favorite team to win, she might have helped some of them, by the way she was pouring water into the bucket. Didn't she know that energy is higher, depending on the altitude water falls into the bucket, also the fasted water is transferred to the bucket, a higher volume per second also generates more energy?
In order to be fair with all participants, there should be a standard system not only to pour the water, but also to connect the bucket in the bridge.
But the contest idea is great, congrats to all the students.
the table brought some of the weight in several tests performed
I did a similar project in high school but with a tower and balsa wood. My tower beat the previous school record by over 400lbs at 975lbs. That year we actually had 3 teams beat the previous record because the teacher bought a different glue. Mine was still the most by over 100lbs

Immediately after my bridge project in high school finished (wood sticks) I already had a different better design in mind. To this day, I wish I could go back.
Popsicle sticks and glue don't cost much. Sounds like a fun weekend project.
@@morefiction3264 i think it was balsa wood.
What I really wish i knew more is about where the load bearing is. I have ideas 😆
I think the winner was just a straight forward build and maximizing the wood and glue they could use within the weight and dimensions limit.
At first I was not sure what language they were speaking, I listen harder, started to get hungry... "Oh! its Italian!"
Anyway rather interesting and fun looking project.
