Rhaenyes had too many opportunities to live. She could have killed all the greens at the coronation, she could have agreed to Daemon's request for them to double team Vhagar and they likely would have won, or she could have retreated after her and Vhagar killed Aegon and Sunfyre. She was bound and determined for this to happen.
So here it is yeah when Vhagar and Aemond took down Sunfryre with Aegon and she was leaving she looked back she knew at that moment AEMOND is dangerous very very dangerous and here is the thing right when great dragonriders and dragons who have experienced combat fight/clash or ride together/dance like Daemon and Laena did in season 1 they can instantly tell how good the other is and all just like how duelers and swordsman can have those convos in a fight after clashing swords so she knows that Aemond is a terrible threat and their best time to beat him is while he doesnt have enough combat experience that was only Aemonds 2nd Dragon fight right and after each fight the bond between rider and dragon deepens they synergize better and all so letting him go then would only make him stronger she saw a chance to stop this jaugernot who only gets better with time there and then she knew it was slim but took the chance and either she or Daemon have the best shot of getting Aemond the goal when fighting Aemond is not Vhagar but to unseat aemond or burn him which is what she tried when she went under because Meleys is more agile but VHAGAR BEING A SUPREME WAR VETERAN CAUGHT ON AND LATCHED ON TO MELEYS LEG BEFORE she could get behind her and hurt Aemond and after that clash she was disorented and she was leaving you saw that she was flying past the castle over the bay towards dragonstone and as she was leaving she was searching for Vhagar but Aemond being a prodigy used the castle to hide Vhagar just like he did at storms end so Luke didnt see him when he landed its tough to watch but her actions where 100% valid

Rhaeyns could not leave because the Greens army was still advancing and Vhagar was still there. If she left, word would get out to Rhaenyra's allies that her dragon riders leave battles and the allies have to face the Greens large army and dragons on their own. Rhaenyra's allies would stop supporting her.

Honestly, I believe Rhaenys decided to continue because she wanted to cause as much damage to Vhagar as possible. She understood that Vhagar and Aemond posed the biggest threat, so she wanted to hurt her as much as possible to help team Black later on. Rip to the og Rhaenys, my favorite character fr🙏🏿😔

And she manage to take it down, for a while. So it's pretty calculated decision. Risky, but not imposible.
Also fleeing the battle would send a message to the rest of the realm, the Queen faction you sworn into would abandon you when the battle got tough. That’s not good.

Rhaenys’ mission was to save stop Rook’s Rest from being taken. That castle was the only place for their armies to land safely from Dragonstone. And the lord of that castle is on Rhaenyra’s small council. If she ran it would look crazy for Rhaenyras cause. She had to double back.
Exactly ! Seems like no one (like most ppl that watch the show) understand it! She couldn’t just leave, she had to secure the place and try her best to take out vhagar. She went out in pure Glory.

If she had managed to take out Aemond and Vhagar she would have won the war right there and then, she would have killed both Aegon/Sunfyre and Aemond/Vhagar, leaving the Greens with Helaena/Dreamfyre, who has no war experience and not in any way ready to fight after the murder of her son, and Daeron/Tessarion who is young, inexperienced and all the way in Oldtown, while the Blacks would still have Rhaenys/Melys, Rhaenyra/Syrax, Daemon/Caraxes, all with years of experience and capable dragonriders, not to mention the numerous other dragons at their disposal.
If it went just a bit better for her the war would be over at Rooks Rest.

She felt she owed it to Rhanerya to try and take Vhaegar down because its exactly what Rhanerya tried to do last episode when she risked her life to talk to Alicent. You take out Vhagar you win the war
Meleys dropping Vhagar to the ground was so damn satisfying.
Makes me wonder if she and Daemon had gone when he said, if they won't have won.? Them together with their fighting experience would definitely have been a problem. By herself and already tired and injured, she took Vhagar down, just a pity she couldn't her down. A moment of silence for the Queen That Should Have Been. She died a true Dragon Rider's death.

@livelovelife32 In the books, it was hinted that if Vhagar went 1v1 with Meleys then Meleys might have won, it's only because of the presence of Sunfyre is what made it difficult.
Meleys didnt throw vhagar, both spirald to the ground gripping eachother and releasing as they neared the ground. Meleys was younger and recovered slightly quicker than old vhagar. Neither was damaged in the fall.
The reason Rhaenys went back like a G, was because she had been hearing non-stop that she could have ended the war in the dragonpit during Aegons coronation. She thought she has her chance to redeem herself and went out like a true warrior queen.

Nah it wasn't about all that. She stayed to fight because they were already losing support with every castle that Cole takes and this was the keep of a member of the Black council. If word got out that she was sent to protect that guy, but ran away the first time she could the rest of their supporters would be hesitant to stay loyal. Daemon is having enough issues rousing an army in the river lands and if word got out that their most experienced rider runs like a coward, the river lands would not stand with him. She also knew that she at least had a chance to do some damage, but as soon as she saw it was a 2v1 she knew she was gonna die.

Everybody hates Criston, yet his plans aren't that stupid. Mixing the twins, luring Meleys (the strongest dragon in Rhaenyra's arsenal) and killing him off and cutting Dragonstone off land are actually smart moves.
People hate him because he’s a hypocrite and has no real reason to hate Rhaenyra as much as he does. He’s just annoying 😂
Caraxes is the strongest Dragon in the blacks arsenal, Daemon is the only dragon rider who had seen war before this episode, and he is a better rider then Rhaenys, Caraxes agility is his biggest strength.

She couldn’t retreat in the books because it was a 2v1, they trapped her, both aegon and Aemond made the plan. Idk why the show went this route
In the book Vhagar was not hidden and Rhaenys did not have the chance to retreat she was attacked by both Aemond and Aegon it was said in the book that she would’ve had a chance to win against Aemond and Vhagar if they were alone but it was a 2v1

Rhaneys real motivation was to cause as much damage to Vhaegar as she could, knowing that Vhaegar would be used in the battles to come.
In the books Rhaenys was tag teamed by Aemond and Aegon and she was winning against Aegon and Sunfyre as shown in this episode but obviously could not take on both of them at the same time I genuinely believe she would’ve had a winning chance if it was a fair fight😭

@@MrBuzzcake Rhaenys had 2 advantages she had decades experience of being a dragon rider so had a great connection with Meleys and had the fastest dragon in Targaryen history and like I said in my comment the author George Martin indicated himself that in a single combat she could have killed Vhagar but her chances of survival were low because she was facing 2 dragons I believe if she faced only Aegon it would’ve either been a draw or she would’ve won also size does not make you more powerful

"Surprise attacks"/ blindside attacks are how dragons battle, its all about angles. You see meleys do the same thing to sunfyre.

Aegon is not a bad king at all, just a young king. He always listens and he had the idea of sending vhagar to fight. He grew up fatherless and kinda motherless, he felts unloved and yet he is a good father to his twins. He wanted to break the cycle with his son, nobody teached him anything he has the will to be better. And now his baby got murdered days ago, he is still grieving losing his temper and Alicent can't even comfort him, her son is screaming for help and love and she just bring him down more.
Thats why he smiled so happy when he saw Sunfyre he is the only one who truly loves him unconditionally right now. Literally his soulmate he is the only one who brings light to his screaming soul (beside his daughter but she is a toddler)
Pd: Idk why Alicent has the nerve to trash aegon so much, just a day ago she let rhaenyra their enemy ESCAPE instead of having her captured. She failed their war so bad and acts like aegon is not doing the job.

The reason she kept coming back was simple. She truly believed she could take on Aemond and Vhagar.

she almost did, she wounded Vhagar and dropped him to the ground, if se(Vhagar) did not ambush her like that she would have gotten away after beating one dragon and wounding the biggest one.
And it was believable after she grounded vhaegar. She did her thing
If the showrunners didn't decide that Vhagar could hide behind a small castle, I think Rhaenys and Meleys could've injured Vhagar more before dying. Even in the book, it's stated Aemond and Aegon didn't want to attack Rhaenys and Meleys alone because they didn't think they could beat them alone. So they surprised her together. In the show they deviated and made it seem like it was a trap set by just Aemond and Cole, and Aegon was being an idiot. Even then, the struggle between Meleys and Sunfyre led to Sunfyre and Aegon being downed after Vhagar's attack, and Vhagar was taken down initially in the fight between Meleys.

Rhaenys knew the battle was lost the minute Vhagar joined the fight. she was outnumbered. Had she run, Vhagar wouldve chased her down like she did Arrax.
Vhagar did not have much chance of chasing down Meleys. Lucerys and little Arrax would probably have been able to outfly Vhagar, who is quite slow, if it hadn't been raining so hard with terrible winds. Meleys is one of the fastest dragons alive.

According to the book on which the show is based, neither Meleys nor Rhaenys have any battle experience. Rhaenys is older and smarter than Aegon, but Aemond has had extensive military training and the biggest dragon in Westeros. Rhaenys is a great king's grand-daughter and the daughter of a prince killed in a military campaign. She promised to go to battle for her queen, not to go and leave the battle unfinished. I believe that Rhaenys feared that if she didn't do her best to badly wound Vhagar, Vhagar would soon harm Rhaenys' own husband and/or grand-daughters, as well as Rhaenyra and Rhaenyra's children, as well as many allies. Rhaenys died a dragonrider's death.

Ser Criston Cole and Aemond decided to attack Rooks Rest because it's a short ride from Dragonstone and they were hoping, actually they KNEW Rhaenyra would send a dragon to Rooks Rest that's why Vhagar was in hiding until that dragon revealed itself which was Meleys. It's so smart because they didn't want to attack Harrenhal in order to keep Daemon busy building an army while being so preoccupied.
you got go back a few episodes for Rhenys, she was tired of all of it at this point, she might as well try to kill Vhagar, try to stop the war escalating if not then go out like a true dragon rider.
It wasnt smart at all though , killing the king was a win for the day , she had no chance 1 on 1 with vhargar. I wish she realized they needed her dragon in a team attack vs vhagar … i dont see it losing unless he gets jumped by the their best dragons

It should be stated that Caraxes wont disobey Daemon like Vhagar did Aemond. If they get into it Daemon immediately has the upper hand because he has both full command over his dragon and a lot more experience.

Vhagar is the largest dragon but Melys is the Blacks largest dragon. If the Blacks want to win they will have to take out Vhagar eventually. Thats why she went back.
The King went down, and she did manage do ground Vhagar temporarily. If she came up on Vhagar still grounded the Blacks could have won then and there.
The smartest move would be jumping vhagar with melys and as many other dragons available. The best play was leaving after killing the king “that was a win for the day “ and running . Nobody stopping vhagar 1 on 1

Rhaenys and Meleys could have fled at any time after injuring Sunfyre but Rhaenys chose to fight. I hope the Blacks will use this battle as reference. I don't like how the Blacks, apart from Daemon are not ready to be ruthless. They're trying to fight an unjust war with dignity. It's time for ruthlessness. Only Daemon seems to understand this fact. It's sad because they've now lost their biggest dragon. They had the numbers to win the war easily but the numbers are now dwindling quickly. If only team black would just go all out!

I actually feel bad for Aegon. He never wanted to be King and they didn’t really train him up for it. He seeks love or support from Alicent but she never gives it. No wonder him and Aemond have issues. Such a dysfunctional family.
She went back because she was there to fight and defend the castle. The circumstances changed and she got jumped but her mission was still the same.
The looks of her and her dragon accepting their deaths was spot on. They already knocked the king out. Maybe by luck they could injure Vhagar or both go down together. She knew she was dead if she went back, but her mission was to defend the castle.
Its also implied she feels guilty because if she had killed the royal family back in season 1 episode 9 it would have prevented the war, so her deciding not to run and fight as much as she can may be her making up for that

I’d rather believe Rhaenys knew that Vhagar was the biggest threat so she chose to sacrifice herself in hopes to either hurt either Vhagar or Aemond. She knew she had no chance of killing Vhagar, but she could at least do something. Reducing it to her feeling hurt by Corlys’ bastard sons diminishes her sacrifice. In the entirety of season 2, she supports Rhaenyra’s aversion to war and after Rhaenyra’s confession she met with Alicent kinda solidifies Rhaenys’ decision to fully support Rhaenyra which why she chose to sacrifice.

It was a small keep, but the strategic significance of holding it was very important. The lord of the keep sits on the black council and is one of the more important supporters of rhaenyras claim to the throne. The greens taking that keep will give them control of most of the nearest coastline to dragonstone and any troops trying to move onto the mainland from that island has to have their ships go around to a different region which would take longer to assemble their forces to meet cole in the field. There was no running from the battle.
The possibility of taking out vheagar the biggest dragon is the realm was to great for her to just leave and go back. If she woulda won that fight the war would have been over.
Rhaenys said "you know what? Fk it, meleys turn around we dont rune, lets cook these fools" respect, Vhagar is slow she could easily have outrun her but she decided to stay, maybe because she wanted try and kill Vhagar maybe out of pride who knows but she stayed and it almost paid off.

The problem with Team Black is that they don't really have a plan. Team Green has been plotting, making moves, advancing, slowly gaining ground without outright assaulting Team Black while Rhaenyra has had Team Black on standstill, refusing to take decisive action. And that's biting them in the ass right now because they're basically way behind
Team black but it is frustrating that they haven't really took action except for rhanys but I feel like in the second half of the show the blacks are gonna more centered and start to make their plans. Greens are making plans but they are dysfunctional. Aegon killed innocent rat catchers, losing morale with his people and firing Otto who is probably the smartest one on the greens, making Cole hand even though he barley does his job, Alicent and aemond don't respect aegon at all. Aegon getting on his dragon drunk when that wasn't the plan. Aemond trying to kill aegon. Aegon is now burnt.
She can't run away in the middle of a fight. That'll send the wrong msg to their allies that they can't depend on the people they're following to war. The moment thing will go south, they'll leave their comrades behind.

I think Rhaenys wasn't going to leave without trying her damn hardest to kill (or at the very least severely wound) Vahagar. She knows that as long as Vahagar lives, the Blacks have no chance of winning the war against the Greens. Even if they all end up dead in the end, one house might go out "victoriously" and Rhaenys had made up her mind that it would be them. I also think that with her family separated (Corlys off to sea again, Baela at risk of being shot out of the sky at any moment, and Rhaena sent away to Pentos) there wasn't much left keeping her in Dragonstone. She fought bravely and admirably until the very end, and with all of her past years of warring behind her both she and Meleys may finally rest. ❤

Arguably the greatest episode of the series so far because every scene mattered. Criston proved himself a great commander and Aemond showed how much better he was than aegon in every way. Daemon is battling himself or a witch lol Rhaenys plan was to win the battle she didnt expect both dragons to be there n the reason y Rhaenys didn’t retreat because the reward was well worth the risk. RIP my favorite live action female Targaryen.

I think you guys might have forgotten that Aemond killed Lucerys and basically started the war. He is considered to be a black-hearted villain. Rhaenys didn't run, she turned to kill him because in her mind he deserves it.

I mean tbh there’s no point in using dragons in war if you’re that sensitive to them or you possibly dying. Rhaenys knew that and it’s really sad but that’s a risk they’re all taking.
In my opinion here’s the reasons why rhaenys keep coming back:
1. She’s fighting for the rookrest, it’s a shame to just flee in battle
2. Rhaenyra did said she wants Aemond Targaryen, she probably think it’s the chance to fight Aemond
3. Any dragonrider would rather die being a dragonrider
