every country has its specialty. when I went to London the fish and chips were 👌, when I went to asisi Italy the gelato was 👌 and I ate at a country side Italian restaurant with homemade pasta dough and sauce and local red wine and that was just oh my god I want to come back in a year or two. beautiful place too.

food may be more expensive in Denmark, when you eat out.. however that's also why we don't need to tip our waiters, because they get payed well

You should try "Flæskestegssandwich", which is slices of pork roast on a burgerbun with mayo, red cabbage and slices of pickled cucumber. So good.

Just saying... Get danish rye bread, liver paté and bacon. Heat the paté and fry the bacon. Put it all together.
    Result? Heaven-on-a-slice-of-bread.

Cinderbloom We have that over here in Denmark. Bacon liver paté.
You should get pickled beets or anything pickled in general, and put on top of it on the bread. Make sure there's not room for more on top when you add it. You want a slice of the pickled goodness with every bite. Trust me. It makes the whole experience so much better.

Denmark is near the border where I reside in Hamburg and so is Netherlands.I have been several times to Denmark.I also like Long Island,Queens,Maine and Bronx in N.Y.. Which has history of various cuisines and so does Puerto Rico.I have also have had different types of foods in India. One thing I learned to appreciate once, was smoked salmon and horseradish salad. It goes splendedly together. Another thing, is our "Frikadeller" -no n's in the word (I have English friends so I know it's tempting) to me, the frikadelle, goes perfectly well, to our REmoulade (matching a tatar sauce, according to the dictionary)

  • @ThomasHessDK

You cannot visit Denmark without trying our "Stegt flæsk med persillesovs" (Fried pork with parsley sauce). That is, in my opinion, THE best Danish food you can get. Period. :-)
In Copenhagen, there is a place called Hansens Familiehave (Hansen Family Garden) located at Pile Allé. They serve traditional Danish food (smørrebrød, pork dishes, fish/herring etc). Go there. You won't regret it.

Hear hear.. Stegt Flæsk med Persillesovs is a MUST have.. (and goat forbid if they make the sauce too thinly.. It should be the step before being served in slices.. thick as mud and heavy as a brick.. And looking at Wolter, no offence man but, you should really try the all you can eat, see how long you can last..
(remember a good beer or two to go along with it, my personal taste would say a Tuborg Classic, since i think it's heavier than a Carlsberg ("Hof", as we call it) or a Green Tuborg, but still crisp enough to go well with the salty flæsk, and parsley

This comment is not about the video above but it is a small confession from a devoted fan of your channel. Many times when I talk with some people about travel destinations around the world, I tell them many things about countries that many of them think I've visited them a lot of times. The funny thing is that a lot of the information is taken from your videos. Thank you a lot Mark for the free travels you offer us. Also, there is a cake that Danes make and eat for weddings, birthdays and special occasions (mainly for weddings). Its called a Kransekake! It's translated into "circle cake" its almond based and is layered like an American wedding cake but is much thinner and wider. It consists of 12 layers. For those Americans who would like to try Scandinavian food (mainly Danish), there are a few Nordic restaurants in New York, NY. One is called "Akavit", which is in Times Square by Rockefeller Center They make they're own Akavit and they flavor them too! Very tasty! Another one is called "Copenhagen". I haven't been to there yet, but I plan to go!

We live from whats here - fish and pork. Our fishing industry, pork/cattle farms and rye farms are our main food sources.
I love how you got everything right, your pronounciation and all. Your impressions made me smile, but in a good way - its just when this is presented by a foreigner, you sudenly realize a lot of basic stuff you never thought about. Cheers!

You should make a point of trying "Æggekage" when you come to Denmark again, it translates as "eggcake" and it's a kind of scrambled Egg baked in a frying pan, served with smoked pork and garnished with chives and served with ryebread. There are local variations, and if you're in Jutland you should try eating lunch at "Hvidsten Kro" , they are famous for "Æggekage" with the recipe passed down at least 3 generations. That way you will get a good Danish dish and a dash of history added. I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

okay so i live in copenhagen and here is what to really eat, 1. if you want to get real good hotdogs go to nimb wich is right by tivoli, they make gourmet hotdogs and is definitely something you should try if you visit 2. if you can afford and can get a reservation, try to get in at noma 3. go to "torvehallerne" or "papirøen" aka copenhagen street food, wich both just are danish food mekkas where literally no matter what stand you go to, the food is great 4. try getting raw food, i know that it's not something you can only get in copenhagen but we're getting more and more raw bars and they're great, you should try either "raw 42", "palæo" or basically any raw bar at cph

The thing that I loved in Denmark was their fries, (crisps of french fries, whatever), they make them at the train station in Copenhagen and it takes 15-20 minutes.
They take fresh raw potatoes and fry them, first on low heat and them on high heat for the perfect french fry. 💗

Try an oldfashion bøfsandwich (beef is minced) and brown sauce on top.
Make sure that the beef, bread and sauce are homemade! At least the beef and sauce!
You can usually get them, where you buy the hotdog. This can’t be eaten without a knife and fork!
If you are on a restaurant, try flæskesteg (owenroasted pork) with everything.
Which include at least two kinds of potato, something sour like “asie” (a sort of pumpkin) or cucumber and rødkålsalat (salad with red cabbage).
Especially the sauce is great. Everything have to be homemade!

"Rooomelaud" hehe.. But yes, after the first time I had a Danish remoulade IN DK (I think I'd had it at my grandma's house growing up, but wasn't quite the same), I realized that I'd been attempting clumsily to concoct a similar condiment for years (in a way that disgusted friends and bystanders alike)... The recipes I got from Danish sites really elevated my sauce-mush. :) It is the single most satisfying addition to roast beef, hot dogs, fish dishes, and all sorts of things.

Mark is 100% correct on the Danishes. I grew up in the USA eating American "Danish" pastries all my life. In 1997 I started working for a Danish company and started traveling there. Once I had a true "Danish" pastry in Denmark, it was game over for the American version. I never get them here in the States anymore. Never.

Carlsberg, Tuborg and Royal (I usually tend to buy Royal).
    Aalborg Akvavit :P
I lived in Aalborg for 6 years and that snaps is EVERYWHERE! Arriving at a party and there will be a person serving a snaps just when you enter through the door. And later he'll just walk around with his shot glass (or horn) and bottle and ask if you'd like another... and another etc.

As a Dane, i must say that, the beer you should have is a Hancock Høker Bajer. Tuborg/Carlsberg, are the bland normal, sad beers we have in Denmark. But the Høker bajer, has gotten the "contrys best beer" award couple of years in a row, so for a normal pilsner, thats the beer to go too.

Although hotdogs are considered cheap fast food here, it is also one of the best tasting foods you can get here. You would need to go to a high-end restaurant to get better food. For the best hotdog in our capitol I would like to recommend the stand (pølsebod) at the back entrance to the central station near Istedgade. This is also one of the most unsafe places in our country, so be careful about pickpockets. But I personally feel safer here than in most other European capitols.
As for "snaps" (our national hard liqueur), remember that it is usually drunk when eating pickled herring on rye bread. And we have this saying that you will limp if you only have one shot of snaps, so you are supposed to have at least two or any even number, although that is not enforced if you do not want to. In my opinion it tastes horrible, which is probably the reason most high-end places serve it directly from he deep freezer.

sklayero Also i recommend ''Ale No. 16'' by ''Bryggeriet Vestfyen''. Very few restaurants has it but you can buy it in ''Fakta'' for 20kr (4$) for ½ liter (0,12 gallons) and it's super good. (As i wrote in another comment)
And no, i still don't work for them, i just personally think the classic Tuborg and Carlsberg beers are crap and of course i want the tourist to try the better beers. National pride is on stake here!? xD

Also you may find it very odd they eat fish for breakfast, a salmon pate which comes in a tube like toothpaste is yummy on knackbrod! Good Luck~

If they come to Copenhagen they should really get one of those Öresunds passes, where they get 48 hours of "free" travel between Sweden and Denmark and also inside those to countrys local busses/trains... jump over to Sweden...see some of Malmö and Lund and the next day take Helsingborg and Helsingör(Denmark) and then back to Copenhagen for like 249(25 euros). (Cph - Malmö is like 13-30 min deppening on where you jump on/off the train) Malmö- Lund is 15 min, Lund - Helsingborg is 30 min and Helsingborg - Helsingör is 20-30(with a boat) and back to cph takes 40 min or so... so not really that bad and you get a lot for your buck
