Look, a Portillo moment is when someone unexpectedly loses their seat. If it's expected, it's not a Portillo.
True... But, still, we would all love to see many, many ' Portillo moments '....
Still funny though
There's two factors that made it a Portillo moment:
One, as you pointed out is that it was unexpeccted.
The other is that he was one of the favourites to become the next Tory leader.
If Kemi Badenoch were to lose her seat, that would be a Portillo moment.
Mordant, Hunt, etc, are expected.
Sunak is the one person who will definitely not be the next Tory leader. If he were to lose his seat, it would be a Sunak moment, not a Portillo moment.
One does not expect a _Portillo_ moment,
One does expect a _Portaloo_ moment.
@@katrinabryce It's unthinkable for a sitting PM to lose their seat. Even if Sunak plans to move to California after the election. He would not want that on his CV.

I can't quite understand a journalist saying something along the lines of "obviously something we've not had much time to talk about so far in this election" with regards to the SNP's potential loss of seats.....the election has been six weeks, one of the longest on record, journalists choose what they decide to talk about and they have mainly gone along with the politicians and focused on tax. The laser focus on tax increases has been at the detriment of all the important issues that needed to be talked about. There's issues I wanted more clarity on to make an informed decision at the polls.
Politicians and backroom spin doctors should not be setting the media agenda and real journalism needs to be asking about the subjects that the public want clarity on and what the politicians are deliberately being evasive about.

Aside from Tory unpopularity there has also been a boundary change. His seat now also part of the one won in a by election earlier in the year by Labour.
Last four weeks polls Labour have been circa 44%, Conservatives dropped from 34% to 25%. Reform increased from 10% to 17%.

Why refer to Nigel Farage in such chummy first name terms when that is not extended to the others under discussion ?
Because he is not MP nor has held the title of Rt.Honorable. He is just a privateer.
The same goes for Sunak with folk and the media referring to him as Rishi as if he's their best mate when actualy he is just another Tory rat.
Because people, in the end, when you boil it down, are morons.

Regarding Scotland there will be thousands normally voted SNP will vote Labour. However the voters after 2014 were Labour voters and went to the SNP. I believe if Starmers keeps verging into the right, (remember the polls for Independence are still 45% plus) people and voters will turn again to the SNP and Independence polls for Independent will go sky high. Scots do not trust the Tories and hoped Starmers will aid them if he goes too right they will not trust Labour.
All seats COULD change. What your introduction might have said is which seats are*likely* to change the MP.
Yes, precisely.... All 650 seats COULD change.... What we will find out, on 4th/5th July, is ... How many will ACTUALLY change.... Not long to wait.....
I havent had ANY candidate knock on my door??? Where are they? My daughter has had ONE..we live 15 mins apart..surely you would work work work to canvas when you know THIS ELECTION is CRUCIAL😮
My constituency has 60,000 people in it. If the candidate spent three mins at each door, that would take about 2,000 hours.
Most candidates work, so eight hours a week going door-to-door each week would be a lot. The candidates in some cases have been chosen in just the last few weeks, but even the earliest choices were made a year ago. So their time to go door-to-door is limited.
Even if the candidate could manage eight hours it would take five years to reach all doors.
But it's worse than that.
This eight hours wouldn't include the time spent at campaign meetings. debates, preparation of materials, leafletting, writing to specific constituents, dealing with local and national media, answering enquiries, visiting local places of importance such as hospitals, schools, etc, attending party meetings, doing publicity work, organising canvassers, etc, etc.
My local Labour candidate has worked tirelessly. I can't believe how hard it's been for him (he's a friend of a friend so I know a lot about him). He's the CEO of a charity, and still has to do his job every day. I doubt that he's got to more that a fraction of the doors.
So don't be upset if you don't get a visit.
There's a few reasons why that might happen.
1) There's a *lot* of doors in a constituency. It takes literally thousands of hours to do - there's only about 1000 hours in total throughout the entire campaign (6 weeks).
2) Door knocking isn't the *only* method of campaigning
3) MPs will be helping to campaign in *competitive* seats. So if your constituency isn't competitive you're less likely to get a visit.
4) If you ward isn't very competitive then, again, the MP is unlikely to visit.
5) Political parties know if you are a reliable voter or not - when they're canvassing they'll literally have a list where it shows which elections you've voted in. If they've spoken to you before they're likely to have a record of your party allegiance and your most important issues (seriously, their databases are massive). So if you consistently vote one way - then, again, you're less likely to get a visit (especially earlier in the campaign) as the parties want to target voters that are likely to change their mind.
Are these two the exact same person?🤔
Hahah I thought exactly the same thing. Like a classic student UA-cam skit for a final year project, with some fun cuts.
