After a long time in and around the music industry, I'll tell you who the real producers are, and how they got the gig. Producers are all over - but Producers who can actually get you a record deal are much, much fewer and harder to reach. Some Producers were hit songwriters before producing. Some were studio musicians. But most major producers are difficult to reach, notoriously weary about listening to unsolicited material from strangers, and are more interested in working with labels who bring them ready-to-launch (and well supported) artists than they are in finding talent to bring to a label. Why? Because why would a real producer want to take a chance on some unknown artist, having to nurture them and coddle them as well as having to shop them to labels, when they can work with labels they already have formed relationships with - and those labels will assign artists to them. It's a sure thing, and a sure thing they will be paid well for it.
Today's industry executives are basically searching for unknown artists on the net - looking for artists who already have a huge (at least 50K-100K subscribers/views/likes) online presence. They don't want to take chances with unknowns, and they don't have to. Same with producers. If you are an artist looking for either a producer OR a record deal, you might as well just get your wallet out now. They don't want artists who are broke - they want artists that can finance themselves. They want artists who will put up the extra money needed to promote their music independently of the label's commitment. They want NO risk. They want a sure bet, and even then nothing in the music industry is EVER a sure bet.
Let me put it to you this way - and I'm sorry if this sounds harsh, but it's truth for those who can get past themselves enough to hear it. You will NEVER become a star, you will never get a record deal, and you will never find a well-known producer to produce you - not unless you prove that you don't need a record deal, you don't need a producer, and you are already making a big name for yourself without their help. If you are broke, your chances are about as good as winning the lottery - and your chances of doing that are actually better than becoming a famous artist. Too many people want it, and too many really talented people with deep pockets, better connections, and with cousins working in the industry are going to stomp all over your little home demo recordings and your 100 UA-cam followers. It's the law of the jungle - and you aren't going to make a dent unless somehow you can (a) attract hundreds of thousands of people to like your pages and come see your shows, and (b) invest a ton of your own money into your career that has been shaved off the budgets of labels and management companies who no longer provide those types of budgets for artists. In other words, the game is rigged.

Bill, you're the man! Thanks for this, my experiences are much the same. For me all of this just means our #1 goal as musicians should be to gather a loyal fan base (subscribers).

Holistic Songwriting Thanks for keeping it positive. I don't mean to discourage, only to speak hard truth. Building your fan base through live performing will get you noticed if you can make it happen. And the occasional miracle UA-cam success can do wonders. Not all is hopeless. 🤑

I disagree, because good quality will always be recognized. Of course the standards of a hit song are high, but an artist have to possess the means to make music up to those standards. In fact, most rappers come from nothing to something from making credible music for people to hear. Your perspective is a cynical way to look at things. From the outside looking in, every industry appear to be rigged until you are proven otherwise. Rolls Royce does very little promotion for their new cars, because they feel like their products' values speak for themselves.

I stumbled across this video again for some reason. I commented already, but I want to shed more light on what I said previously. Don't ever discourage people to not follow their dreams because of how hard it seems. Like I said before, the cherry always rises to the top. That analogy applies to musicians because the best music will always be made known, especially in this new era where social media rules. You claim that it's near impossible to become a star in the music industry, but it's actually become easier in a way, mostly because of social media. Social Media has given artists and producers a platform to build their fanbases on, which in turn made becoming an established musician much more easier than before where a musician's entire career is determined on whether he or she could land a record deal. Guess what, record labels aren't needed anymore. It's actually dumb to sign to a label now, especially when artists can succeed just as much without being signed to one. Being successful as an artist has become easier than ever before, and it will continue to do so as technology advances.
You have a very cynical outlook on this matter, but you made very good points. As much as I preached how much easier it is to emerge in the music industry, I will say that it's not easy per say, it's just easier. Each genre has its standards of music that needs to be met by its artists, which is why demographic targeting is one the most important aspects of emerging in the industry as an artist.

Most of the upcomming singers/rappers doesnt have the knowledge to give ideas to build a track. They want everything already done , most of them not even ask to change the structure of the song

I already have lots of written songs.. some are unfinnished, some are full written but I don't know how to play it's chords ( I am a ukulele beginner and that's the only instrument I am working on..yet), some are ready to record... I just wish someday...somebody will wants to listen to the songs I wrote...one person is enough...cause it means there is someone who are willing to know how I feel, how I lived, the story of my life...just looking for one person (I actually made a song for that one person haha always wondering who could that be)

I have a knack for writing lyrics and I hear beautiful sounds in my head, I’m just super intimidated by music production and I don’t know how to play any instruments. I love absolutely every genre but to give you an idea of some artists my sound resembles: Solange, Kali Uchis, Steve Lacy, Ravyn Lenae, etc. you know that kind of crowd. I noticed some producers responded to some people so I’d love to talk to anybody that has any insight on this! I was thinking I’d just have to suck it up and learn to produce but that’ll be years from now when I find time to do that and I have soooo many ideas.

2 years ago I didn’t even know what “arm a track” meant I asked musicians what I needed to setup home recording I got a 2nd hand computer and a stein berg mkII and reaper , 2 years on after countless nights and hours putting out spotfires and tearing my hair out I can produce quality tracks for myself to which I send to get mixed then get mastered , working on my debut single atm. My advice is to get into it yourself , if you love music and are passionate about it then you won’t find any excuses not to do it yourself , I also recommend reading or listening to the 4D songwriter 👌

Great advice. I think some people lack the basic knowledge or confidence to produce their own stuff and think someone else could do it better. As you mentioned, who better than you, to do it right? Kind of like trusting a financial planner instead of studying finance and investing. I see a Production/Recording File happening in 2017. Very Cool if that happens. Sign me up!
