This is a rather different video, where I'm talking about life in the 1950's and why I wouldn't want to be living in that era!
My apologies about the sound, I guess my mic is rubbish and I need to get a new one. I don't know why it sounds like this, I hope it doesn't deter you from watching the video!
Apologies for being absent for a month or so, but I was having a hard time trying to move house, which actually hasn't happened yet. I hope it won't take too long!
I would love to read your comments and have a discussion on this... And if you also dress vintage, tell me, would you want to live in the 1950's? (or the era you dress in?)

We didn’t lock our doors, you could leave your keys in the car, streets were safe, and it only took one breadwinner to raise a family. Women were not bossed around by their husbands. That’s a generalization. There were lots of good points about the 1950s.
That's very true, there were many good things about the 1950's and I think you've highlighted some of the best! Thank you for your feedback and I will certainly keep everything you said in mind if I tackle this subject again in the future!
Preeach!!! I grew up in a post-communist roman catholic country, in a conservative household. Let me tell you, I feel like I grew up in the 50s. My biggest dream as a young girl was to become a spinster and live alone 😂😂 I guess it was a side effect of looking at my parents lovely marriage.
I swear, your intro of "a divorced woman in my 40s, with no children" sounds like a beginning of a badass book that I would loveto read😍 it also made me more curious about your private life! Is it very nosy of me?🙈

I agree with you in some aspects. No one should be forced to be something else, totally true. However I do have vintage values and I would have loved to live in that time. I do know some things were wrong, but personally I would have loved to live during the late fifties.

What was it Mildreds friend called her in Mildred Pierce? A green widow? I know that novel/movie was more meant as a cautionary tale about a woman using her powers for her own benefit and getting what was coming to her, but man. All i saw was a fabulous woman tragically written by a man and being punished for being powerful (and a woman). Honestly though it made me realize that the early part of the 20th century wasnt as sanitized as we had all been lead to believe.
I think the term was grass widow and indeed, a strong woman that behaves like a man would, is always deemed as shrewd, cunning and she-devil! And yes it wasn't sanitized at all, just "clean" on the outside and very dirty on the inside!
I think you describe so well why people put ‘vintage style not vintage values’ on their accounts. My father’s values are rooted in the 50s (after all such a great time to be a privileged straight white guy!) and my brother and I were brought up completely differently. I was actually given the choice of cooking or secretarial training. I rebelled!
You found some great (ie atrocious) ads too. I think in the 50s they tried to brain wash women back into the home after they’d escaped during the 40s.

It makes me very happy that you say that, since you are also a vintage enthusiast that doesn't support vintage values! And learning that you were brought up with the 50's ideal makes it even more amazing that you rebelled and became a strong, independant woman!
Yes after the 1940's it must have been a big shock for women to be pulled back into the home duties.

I was born in 1958, so i did live in the 50s. I remember the 2 generations before me very well. There was nothing wrong with them. Fine upstanding and wise people. In fact they were part of the greatest generation. Men and women greatly respected each other. Whatever the advertising world did had nothing to do with what people really were.
everybody feels that way about the time period they grew up in. there’s very wonderful people from every generation, in fact most people are probably generally good folks. but no doubt social climate is always changing and morphing, and no doubt in the general popular culture of the time made many things more difficult for independent women. a general societal culture at such a broad scale is more dictated by governments and companies with power to influence than it is by individual people
I'm glad you had a happy childhood and I'm sure there were many wonderful people in past generations. But that doesn't change the fact that the society in the 50's was problematic for the reasons I mentioned in the video. And all this is based on historical facts not on my personal opinion.
I lived in the fifties and it was pretty good. Her rendition of the role of women is incorrect. First of all what is wrong with a woman staying home and rising children? It is the rule of nature. Women could go to college and have careers. My mother went to college and was a teacher for a while, but she preferred to stay home with her four children. My father never beat her and always asked her advice on decisions.
There's nothing wrong with a woman staying at home, as long as it is her choice (I mention that in the video). It's great that your mom had a happy life, that she chose for herself, but not all women had that opportunity. Also, what about Black people and gay people? They were treated so terribly and that is all in historical facts...
