  • Hi Everyone!
My name is Dan, and I am a veterinarian. Today I am talking about pet insurance and how to best cover your pet. I have talked about a lot of different pet insurance over the past few videos, but in this video and touch upon how to best get your pet covered at the pet hospital.
It is really important that you make sure your pet has no preexisting conditions. This is the most common question I get. A pet insurance company will not cover preexisting conditions. This is because, insurance was not made to cover past and current problems. You need to get the insurance before any problems develop.
Ask for a copy of your medical chart after going to the vet. This will allow you to review your pet's medical chart, and you can prove your pet has no preexisting conditions.
Now if a mistake is made by your vet or another medical professional regarding your chat, you can always ask to have it amended. This means the vet will type in any medical charting mistakes or if there was a wrong diagnosis.
Mistakes can happen when charting or medical diagnosis or concern. It is important to always ask your veterinarian for your chart after each exam to make sure their comments line up with your pet insurance.
Disclaimer: Always consult with your vet regarding all medical concerns. This video does not replace veterinary care.

Pet insurance is a must. Saved us a bunch of money due to an issue with our Beagle. The cost without would have been thousands due to a stay at a 24 hour vet faciality and the test run to find out what the issue was. Dr. Dan, thank you for the great advice.

So true! Get pet insurance the MOMENT you get a puppy. Preexisting diagnoses are not covered. Breed specific conditions are not covered. Had it for 3 years for my boxers. Dropped the insurance because of this reason, plus there is a maximum on diagnoses. Like allergies. Almost better to save $200 a month instead of paying a premium for insurance that won't cover something.

I still believe it is important to just save monthly for your pet, but those late night emergency room visits are sooo expensive now.

Almost every insurance covers breed specific condition. So long as no signs were shown before getting a policy

Thanks. Good advice. I haven’t filed any claims with PetsBest yet. My dogs are having an annual exam in a few weeks, but my policy doesn’t cover routine ‘maintenance,’ which I chose to limit the premiums. The policy covers only conditions or events beyond routine.

Is a "perfect" physical exam taken 7 months prior to the pet insurance for a very young cat (10 months) sufficient for not being accused of pre-existing condition ? And how can a young animal (under 1 yold) have a pre-existing condition ?

Always talk with your insurance provider regarding what veterinary docs are needed to establish no pre-existing conditions.

Hi Dan, my cat suddenly had a swollen belly and started constipating with hairballs in the poo, i live very far away from a vet so it's hard for me to take my cat there for multiple checkups, what could be the problem?
