This is actually a song by James Taylor’s friend Carole King, a brilliant singer-songwriter in her own right. She wrote in response to James’s song Fire and Rain, where he sings about the loss of a friend who died by suicide. . Both songs are beautiful. James is such a gentle sensitive artist. 💙

@@jaxmom9043 that’s not accurate. The 1st verse is about his friend who committed suicide but his friends didn’t want to tell him while he was away in England. 2nd verse is about his fighting a drug addiction, 3rd verse is about his stay at a mental hospital and a band he formed called The Flying Machine. I was not sad, I never heard it before so there was no emotional attachment.... I can't explain it, but that's what happened... ;)

Glad you are hearing it now. You would no doubt love his soft folk rock, low key vibe. The girls would too. Very calming.

The Carol King song “So Far Away” from the Tapestry album, helped me to get through my homesickness while away during my first year of college. I gotta say, I was literally physically and emotionally homesick! Hell..back then I remember getting homesick just being away on vacation for a week!
I gotta say that it was comforting to hear that I was “just time away” from being back home again. Carol King assured me of that fact so I trusted her words and easily settled into my second year….

James Taylor is among the GOATs of the 70s. Fire And Rain was his first hit & it should definitely be listened to. He has a lot of GREAT songs!! He also recorded some songs with his long-time (now former) wife, Carly Simon. I think you reacted to her song, You're So Vain. The song, Mockingbird, as sung by James & Carly is a classic!
Also, You've Got A Friend was written by Carole King, who has written close to 120 songs that made it onto the Top 100 record charts, some in the 50s, but mostly in the 60s & 70s, by a wide range of artists & genres. In 1971, Carole released her second album as a singer -- Tapestry -- & it's still considered by many to be one of the best albums of all time!! You two would love her song, I Feel The Earth Move, from that LP. Actually, you'd probably love every song on Tapestry. She has lots more since then to showcase her incredible voice. And the list of hit songs she wrote for others could keep you busy with reactions for probably a month or more, with a wide variety of artists, such as:
Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow by The Shirelles
You Make Me Feel Like A Natural Woman by Aretha Franklin
    Locomotion by Little Eva
One Fine Day by The Chiffons
Carole King songs were also recorded by Barbra Streisand & The Beatles, to name just 2, and Carole King is a voice you must let yourselves hear.

James Taylor was at the forefront of the singer-songwriter movement which hit its stride in the early 1970's. He and fellow artists such as Jim Croce, Kris Kristofferson, Carole King, etc. wrote from their personal experiences and made music even more relatable to the lives of listeners. It's part of the reason that their music is so timeless. Times change, but people's struggles really don't.

Amber you really aced it! It is poetry. There is a whole subset of groups and singers that are known as the Singer/Songwriters and James Taylor and Carole King are at the top of the list, along with my most personal favorite Dan Fogelberg. Please please please for me, someday play Dan Fogelberg sometime. It would mean the world to me. He was very popular in the 70's and 80's and his music was pure poetry. His music truly inspired me, if you love James Taylor I think you will feel the same way about Dan. Saw James Taylor in concert years ago he is as great live as in the studio. Thank you guys, you are doing a wonderful job. :)

Taylor gave a demo tape of songs, including "Something in the Way She Moves", to Peter Asher who then played the demo for Beatles Paul McCartney and George Harrison. McCartney remembers his first impression: "I just heard his voice and his guitar and I thought he was great and he came and played live, so it was just like, 'Wow, he's great.'" Taylor became the first non-British act signed to Apple and he credits Asher for "opening the door" to his singing career.

At a time when it's an overused descriptor, James Taylor really is one of the GOATs. Considered a folk-rock singer-songwriter, you can also hear influences of blues, soul, Americana in his songs. He is a modern-day troubadour and his magnum opus is "Fire and Rain", a song about loss, depression, addiction, and letting go so you can move forward. Besides "Fire and Rain" listen to "Sweet Baby James" and "Carolina in my Mind" and "Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight". There are 100 others, but that's a great place to start.

James Taylor and Carole King are my two favorite artists of all time. I can listen to everything they've ever done over and over and never tire of it. Every song recommended in this thread is top notch. I would only add one more for a funky, different Taylor song, and that's "Steamroller". Supposedly he wrote this in response to all the funky, bluesy kind of "brick house" songs that came out at that time. It's sort of a tongue-in-cheek shot at them, I think, but it's still a cool song that shows a different side.
