    Listen to this song again and NOTICE: The song begins with just Cat on his guitar, then he sings, his guitar and voice get stronger, a bass starts, drums, backing vocals, etc. As the song progresses, more and more instruments and voices are added. The song gets bigger and louder as the Peace Train gets closer.

    In January of 1986, I was a high school senior in Concord, NH. A teacher from my school, Christa McAuliffe, had been chosen to be the 'teacher in space' and ride aboard the Challenger. As you all already know, she and the others died when Challenger exploded during launch. The next day, my physics teacher played this song for us, saying it brought him peace and hope and he hoped it would for us as we mourned Mrs. M. That was my introduction to this song, and it never fails to remind me of that day, and of the teachers who made such an impact on me.

    Cat Stevens was huge when I was a teen, I was born in 1960 when music was amazing and we all used to hang out in town listening to music and kicking back all getting along. Cat Stevens was a very peaceful humble man and he was looking for that peace and love so he moved to the Middle East ( that's where the Yusuf came from) when 9/11 happened he wanted to come back and do a benefit concert for the victims family's but the Government wouldn't let him in, people were upset and the complaints were pouring in so the government gave in ( thank God) he's so amazing

      I lived through the same generations as you and am always saddened by how little progress we have made. It is a sad commentary on society that we are sitting in the same place, all these years later. I guess there is a certain hope in that we survived those terrible times, the race riots, the wars, the have and the have nots, and are still here fighting. I can remember living in SoCal during the race riots and my father going and buying a gun. He would never have had a gun in the house until the riots and he was so worried for us kids. I lived in Orange County and between drugs, riots and just the general feeling of unrest, he would stay up at night watching the house. He would not let us out of his sight and so all three of us kids lived through the music. We would each sit in our bedrooms and play albums all day long! Once the riots subsided then life took on a more normal tone and we thought progress was being made but it really wasn't. At the time I can remember being so scared that it would spread south and we would all be murdered in our beds. Such a weird collection of memories. Eventually, the times changed and we moved out of SoCal, which I still miss, and life went on.

    I know a lot of people like live videos, to capture the energy of the audience, but I'd recommend using recorded videos to capture the vibe that captured the zeitgeist and made the song popular.
    PS: He is called Yusuf/ Cat Stevens is that he converted to Islam and changed his name to Yusuf. When the song came out he was simply known as Cat Stevens.

    • @bowtangey6830

      Boy, do I agree. Record producers are artists, too, and are too often ignored.

    • @ptournas
      @ptournas 2 роки тому +2

      I prefer live videos to judge the talent of the performer rather than the studio versions which are are usually the results of multiple takes and selected punch-ins from different takes. You also often record different instruments and vocal tracks separately, losing the whole gestalt of a live performance. That being said, the recorded releases do usually have a better sound mix than live performances, but without seeing live performances you don't know if what makes the record great is the performers or the producer and sound technicians.
      There are definitely mediocre musicians and vocalists who have put out some great recordings from time to time, and they are worth listening to. But at least if you've seen them live and still love the record, you won't be disappointed or surprised when you see them live again and they can't perform the song as well as it was in the recording. Generally I see recorded releases as being great for evaluating songs, and live performances as the criteria for evaluating performers.
      In this case, as for capturing the zeitgeist, a live version with an audience gives a fuller picture of the spirit and mood of the time, given that the performance was recorded only months after the record was released, and there was no official video of the song released.
      While I agree with Bow Tangey that "Record producers are artists, too, and are too often ignored." The same can be said of important contributors to many arts: movie producers, cinematographers, the apprentices to painters who actually did some of the painting in the works of great artists. Basically most people can't name more than a handful of music or movie producers unless their true movie buffs or music buffs. But they go into the work knowing that, so it's usually because they love doing it and not looking for a road to widespread fame.
      Anyway, it's all a matter of personal preference. I happen to prefer my introduction to a musical artist to be a live performance, followed by the recordings. Of course I listen to the radio so often I do hear a recording I like first, which then prompts me to look for a live version.

    • @jillmayer9501
      @jillmayer9501 2 роки тому +1

      I agree!! I prefer when they react to the original recordings for the most part. Live versions are often times better when you know the original recording and can fill in the missing pieces with their emotion on stage.

    Awesome. Thank you. #IStandWithUkraine Also - You've got to hear Cat Stevens' "Morning Has Broken." Unforgettable. (I'm referring to the studio version - the piano, arranged and performed by Rick Wakeman, is stunning.) What's really cool: Of all the songs on the album, it was one of the last to be released as a single, The record company figured, "Hmmm, it's an old Gaelic hymn. Meh. Big deal. Who's going to like that? Well, let's release the single and see if we can make a bit of money." And they did...and it shot to #1 on the charts for 5 weeks. Everybody loved it. :)

    It's amazing to see y'all's reaction to this song because it's exactly the reaction I had when Cat first released it back in the 70s. That long for a world living in empathic harmony and love. I tell you what: y'all should REALLY get to The O'Jays "Love Train" to get a Soul/R&B take on the theme.

    Have always love Cat Steven's music. He is a great singer songwriter with a very unique sounding voice. One of my first albums I ever bought was his "Tea For The Tillerman". The whole album is great. So is the album "Teaser & The Firecat". His first big hits were "Matthew & Son", "I Love My Dog" & "The First Cut Is The Deepest" in 1967. He has had so many great songs in his career such as "Father & Son", "Wild World", "Moonshadow", "Peace Train", "Morning Has Broken" etc. He is still recording & performing live & his voice still sounds great.

    Timely and beautiful...just like y'all are. Now THERE'S your coincidence!
    Equally groovy, but unique in its own way is 10,000 Maniac's cover of "Peace Train". There is a video with them on a train. Worth the review as well. They really play up that beautiful chorus bit in the background.
    In the '60s and '70s people hopped aboard the peace train in great numbers, but you know what? There was a well-funded and permanent opposition to peace, love and grooviness, and it has only grown and grown, sad to say, and much of it is probably funded by the very guy who is causing all the trouble, disturbing the peace...because if we fight each other, he won't have to fight us. Let us do ourselves in.
    This crisis is another opportunity to hop aboard the peace train, and y'all can help show people how and why. Your response to this song is the same as many folks back then, and all hippie type peace-lovin flower children. Anyways, thank again. Peace & Love.

    I love ur outlook regarding peace, love, unity and compassion. Its nice to think the world could live in peace. Unfortunately, cruelty is part of the fabric that makes us human. One day. long ago, a caveman snuck up behind another caveman. An innocent one that probably believed in peace. But he was cooking a freshly killed deer and the other caveman wanted it. One of them had to die. This song and dance has played in the dance hall of history and it will continue to play long after we re all gone. Sadly, it's those looking for peace that end up paying the price

    I'm 67. at 17 I was in the high school band. We went to all the football games within 100 miles of our school. I remember everyone getting their instruments out and playing to the songs on the radio as we traveled. This was one of my favorites. It's 50 years old. but it's still a great song. Oh a lot of us were in a school Doc Severonson kind of band. So we did that kind of accompaniment. I miss those days.

I feel it’s one of the great comeback stories in music history and I don’t think it gets enough attention. He still performs beautifully too! I’m happy to see people your age appreciating this great talent and yeah we need the message of this song more than ever right now! It should be blasted in Red Square! Peace and Love to you both!
