How to prevent swelling after hair transplant | My Comprehensive Guide

- A swelling may develop after a hair transplant soon after or uptil 2-3 days later. Usually this swelling following a hair transplantation procedure resolves with time if advice for prevention of swelling given by the hair transplant doctor is followed.
Do you need to worry if you get excessive swelling after your hair transplant? If the swelling after the hair transplant you just got is painless, there is nothing to worry. If it is red and painful, hang on and watch this video. If your swelling has persisted beyond the 7th day, you are a diabetic, and there is redness, throbbing pain and fever, switch off this video, pick up your phone and immediately call your doctor.
Because, infection if not controlled in time can be devastating.
In this video Dr Bhatti discusses the causes, the dangers, the prevention and the treatment for swelling that may occur after a hair transplant.
The cause of swelling after a hair transplant can be either one or more of the following 5 reasons:
Large amount of injected tumescence
Inadvertent vessel rupture during nerve block
Using needles for slit making
Infection
Not using corticosteroid
How does a surgeon prevent swelling from happening?
Giving preop medications that prevent swelling
Avoid aspirin and ibuprofen before procedure
Proper lab investigations to rule out underlying disorders
Minimally invasive procedure
Triancinolone acetonide during procedure
Proper postoperative instructions
Anti-inflammatory drugs to facilitate healing
How do you as a patient do your bit in preventing swelling?
Avoid exercise
Do not talk animatedly
Do not bend forwards in the first 3 days
Try not to work on a PC
Forehead massage to change the direction of flow from center of forehead to towards the temples.
Stay at a hotel and not with relatives when you are from out of town so you are not bound socially to engage in polite conversation especially if you are meeting them after many years.
45 degrees elevation on first night. 30 degrees for the next 4 nights. Face upwards towards the ceiling. Elevation helps by decreasing venous and lymphatic pressure. This “gravity position” ensures flow along lymphatic channels along occipital and temporo-parietal scalp preventing facial swelling.
Activities of daily living like eating, going to the bathroom, tying shoelaces are no problem at all because edema fluid moves very slowly. It takes at least 1 or 2 days for lymphatic fluid to move from below the hairline to center forehead.
Once edema has begun, steroid, ice packs, and other physical methods have little or no effect. Therefore, prevention is the best treatment.

i have a doubt, i have mild dermattis on my scalp and taking treatment too for it. I am losing my hair currently so i am planning to trim my hair to use Derma roller.
Is it advisable to use derma roller on dermattis scalp? please advice
Cannot say unless I examine it. Best to see a local dermatologist and take advice.
Hey doc, Iam 18 and about to start fin oral, already on top fin + min and ketaconazole. I am predestined to be a norwood 7 by 30 and I am currently at norwood 1.5. in your experience with patients as young as me,do you think fin oral would be enough in the long run or would I have to try out dut?

It is too early to panic. There is no such thing as 'destiny'. You may have everyone in your family bald, but you may not be. Genetic transmission is not easy to understand.Have you started to have hair thinning? Though Finastreide is FDA approved for those 18+, I advise my patients only after 21 since DHT has important functions till then. Topica antiandrogens get absorbed into the blood stream through the skin. Technology to find an effective carrier that bypasses this route and guides the rugs straight to the roots is yet lacking.
@@hairtransplantinindia yes I have started to thin and I have noticed my hairline and temples recede .my derm has confirmed that it is mpb. One thing I wonder about is that let's say fin does not maintain my hair and I gradually reach a norwood 4/5 but delay it by a certain amount of time. Then even if I get a hair transplant and use fin I would still be balding right? Then do u prescribe dut?

Hello Dr. I just received a FUT and two days later the swelling went to my forehead and eyes. I don’t even recognize myself - my left eye at one point was completely swollen shut. I reached out to my Dr. he said nothing to worry about. Keep icing and he prescribed me Methyipredisonisolone - I’ve been on for a day so far not seeing any results yet.i am currently on Day 3 post op - please advise thank you

It depends upon whether the transplanted hairs are permanent, semi-permanent or were miniaturising when harvested! Your doctor will know best!!

Yes swelling can cause a red eye which will take upto 10-14 days to resolve. Facial swellings happen due to improper technique or neglect by patient of post procedure care advised.

Yes it has benefits for hair growth but not effective in androgenetic alopecia which this Channel is all about. Normal balanced diet is sufficient after a hair transplant. Only stay away from gym supplements.

We do not recommend this.
With lot of sadness iam writing this comment doctor iam 18 yrs old boy, iam taking finasterade and minoxidil from the last five months because of excessive hair shedding and diffuse thinning i consulted a good dermatologist doc he done 5 prp therapies also for me. But the hair loss isnt stopped 🥺, whenever i comb lot of hairs falls out i also find many hairs from my bed and also when i apply minoxidil. Majority of the hairs which is falling out is thin in size compared to the hairs i have in very good length.
This time i don't know what to do 🥺, if the treatment doesn't work.. I ll go bald for sure..

Sir I have a doubt regarding topical finasteride solution.!
It's a fact that it's not advised to touch or handle finasteride by females.! What happens when a male sleeps near a female or both use the same pillow after applying topical finasteride solution at night.! Is that safe? Is there any possibility that finasteride can do harm to female if they touch the male's hair.!?
This may cause a problem since Finasteride in any form is a Class X medication.

I will be doing a surgery in two sessions (2 days) as I have to do more than 3,000 grafts. Wouldn't my head be down for the 2nd session? And would this cause swelling due to gravity?
3000 is very easily done in single day session. Is this number body grafts?
@@hairtransplantinindia More than 3000 grafts. The doctor estimated 4500+ after consultation.. But he said it will be over two days as doesn't recommend more than 3000 grafts a day. However, I am worried after watching this video as I am thinking on the second day my head will be down and the gravity may induce swelling as you mentioned

Hello Doctor, do you think taking oral finasteride 0.5mg daily and applying topical solution consisting of 5% minoxidil+0.1% finasteride , 2ml a day on scalp, is a good idea?
The former is. The latter composition - only Minoxidil will work. Oral Finasteride and topicel Minoxidil form the crux of my management of androgenetic alopecia and of several specialists in the field who are not driven too much by commerce.

@@hairtransplantinindia thank you for reply....I m 30. I m noticing some hair loss from crown area although overall hair volume Is good. I have gone through stress, took some medication for stress.1 year back may be the reason. Now lifestyle is good still no improvement in crown area.
Dont want to do minoxydil because i dont know what will happen once i stop taking it.
I think finasteride and minoxidil not needed at this point of time as my hair loss is not progressive, no family history.
I heard PRP can help with no side effect. Some says it can worsen hairloss?
