These videos came up after I searched for sphagnum moss on Amazon - what a coincidence - not. That being said I have thoroughly enjoyed watching both of your growing live moss videos
Thanks for these sphagnum videos, very interesting. Commercially produced sphagnum and peat is unfortunately NOT a very renewable resource given where it tends to be harvested from, so growing it ourselves is a better idea, and it is something I'm doing. I'm also looking into coir peat as a growth medium.
I love the natural, wild look of the moss used as top dressing. Do you use it on plants that need a wet/dry cycle of watering and/or a dry winter rest ? Have you had any pest, fungus, rot or diseases associated with the use of the moss ? It raises the adjacent humidity and I imagine helps retain moisture in the pot media, both of which are usually beneficial but have you encountered any difficulties in providing proper care to plants with the live moss dressing ?
***** never had any problems at all with it. Other than in the summer it is tuff to keep alive in the sunny pots. Can't use it in a pot that drys out im afraid, it has to stay moist.
Enjoyed watching this video. Not boring at all. Found it interesting and informative. Wondering what kind of mix you had the plant in that you were putting the live moss in? I now have several orchids, all phals since I keep them inside in my kitchen where they are doing well. They've all bloomed again this year after buying them last year. I have two Mexican Butterworts and a Venus Flytrap that I am doing well with after watching your videos. Flytrap is outside, not house plant. Interested in either Sarracenia pitcher plants or Nepenthes. Which would be easier to grow? No greenhouse. Would an empty aquarium work for growing live moss if kept spray for humidity and flourescent lighting? Thanks for sharing! You are an enabler!
Janice Upton Hi Janice, the nepenthes mix is sphagnum, orchid bark and perlite but Sarracenia are easier to grow with out a greenhouse because they lie out side. Some hardy Nepenthes will grow on windowsills though
good idea on using the cuttings from plants that have overgrown moss to create a topping for those that you have that don't. i just trimmed two plants down last week that i could have used on the rajah and robcantleyii i just got bare root!
I actually had some dried spaghnum moss start growing. I purchased moss for my orchids, but decided to try rooting a plant for an experiment. I sprayed the moss and put it in a glass container sealed with plastic wrap. After about 4 months, I noticed moss growth. Totally. Amazing.
My new harborfreight greenhouse that I got for christmas is not holding in the heat at night and I want to put a heater in but my dad will not let me because he is scared something will catch fire, do you have any tips on what heater to use so he doenst have to worry?
I just recently bought an orchid on sale. Not the best idea. The roots ended up being very rotten. I was wondering if you had any advice on how to treat this. I've seen your other videos on root rot but my orchid is in bad condition. I think it only has one heathyish root. And all the new root growth is coming out rotten and black. Help! :/ I really want to save this orchid. Could I send you some pictures???
Hi Brad, love your channel! I have a little portable greenhouse (like the $25 one you keep in your house over the winter) and in it I have a fan, a humidifier, and a couple 100w LED grow lights (one is a red/blue light). The humidifier keeps it foggy in the greenhouse for about half the day (but tends to create a lot of moisture on the ground). Anyway I just tried this technique with my new shipment of live sphagnum moss...and about 2 days later it was all covered in grey mold! I know for my nepenthes to pitcher and for my moss to grow I need super high humidity...but then how do I keep the mold down?
How do you feed there things? Can you maybe, buy live bugs from the pet shop and drop 'em in? lol Also, I like the red tinged sphagnum! Where is it from?
Feb 29th 2016: I hope it is possible to start growing moss (plants) or on rocks on an outdoor patio. I live close to the beach. Will I have a problem in this location? Bruce @79. thank you.
Not sphagnum moss. Sphagnum requires very wet, boggy conditions to grow. Check out your area for local mosses. Moss needs shady, moist areas to grow well. you should be able to find information online about how to get it started online.
You'll want the low growing carpet type mosses for your patio. These grow best on hard surfaces like rocks and around patio stones. You can collect them yourself and I suggest collecting from areas near to your home at the beach. You can often find them growing along roads, sidewalks, rocks and stone walls. They will have a thin layer of dirt and debris that they are growing on. Some will grow directly on brick or stone, these are very hard to collect. You'll need some simple supplies, a small plastic shoebox or sweater tub, a 4-5" painter's putty knife or a stainless steel kitchen spatula, and some old newspaper. Line the plastic tub with a few layers of newspaper, when you find your moss, slide your putty knife underneath and be sure to get all or as much of the dirt layer below. Lay each piece separately on your news paper. As you fill in a layer add another layer of newspapers on top and continue collecting. Be responsible, do not collect from neighbor's properties unless you ask permission. You really shouldn't have to these mosses grow wild in public spaces. Try to collect mosses growing in similar light conditions as to where you're going to be planting. Some mosses grow better in shade or bright sun. Prep the area you're planting in. Clean up debris, leaf litter that may have collected around or on top of rocks. Moisten the area well with a hose with a sprayer nozzle. Remove your moss, moisten it well with the sprayer then smash it flat with your hand against a hard flat surface. You won't hurt it and this makes it more pliable to shape over rocks or around curved surfaces. It will not adhere to vertical surfaces, you'll want to plant is as near to horizontal as possible. If your looking for it to grow up and over rocks plant around the base and let it grow up naturally, it will take some time but will be worth the effort. You can also plant it between the margins of patio or walkway stones unless they have cement or mortar between them. Once you're done planting, water it in well with a good mist or light spray from your nozzle, be careful not to blast it out of place. Keep it moist, it may require watering once or even twice a day until established. Each spring you'll notice little stalks growing up from your moss, this is the reproductive stage that will produce more moss spores. When these spores find the right conditions your moss will spread. This is a project that will take time, be patient. Alternately you can check with local nurseries for Irish Moss or Scotch Moss. Not true moss but look very similar and these grow on soil. These grow in zones 4-10 so can be grown in most of the U.S.. They both can have a similar appearance to sphagnum moss except they are green not reddish. They are not fond of hot conditions but can tolerate some sun. Your nursery personnel should be able to advise on the care and planting.

Thanks for posting so cool
God, I love Canadians, always inspiring us to be better people :D
Does fern moss also work. I know sphagnum stays way moister but I got some good live fern moss laying around
You need a pair of aquascaping scissors. The blades are curved just like the cuticle scissors. Less hand cramping.
Thank you Brad, this is very helpful!
I have enjoy the video.....great
ivy geerman thanks Ivy
Do the spaghnum heads grow back like they were before when you cut them ?
Hi! Thanks for the informative video. What do you call the red live moss that you use? :)
What kind of water do you use to keep your Moss damp and humid? I've read that tap water has too much chlorine in it.
Thanks

Gopro Victor I would look for a online greenhouse store and see what they have. if it is meant for a greenhouse, it should be safe

is it possible for a nepenthes to climatise or adapt to a enviroment with less humidity?
Is it poisen?
No, in, fact, in the army handbooks, it is recommended as an emergency wound dressing because it doesn't harbor bacteria.
