Are they pictures or pitchers. I was told they are pitchers, the captions on your video spell it pictures. I saw one of these plants at Disney one time a while back I most recently had the opportunity to purchase one at a very affordable price when it arrived I was so happy when it was completely unwrapped I noticed it had a pitcher that was about an inch long at best, it is the cutest thing. Thank you for your video. I just want to make sure that I'm taking care of my starter plant correctly. It came planted in moss . Would it be better to transplant it in an orchid mix or soil prepared for cactus and when should I transplant it ? Have a wonderful New Year
They’re called pitchers and plant it in 1/3 peat moss 1/3 sand 1/3 perilite NO FERTILIZERS and use distilled water you get from the store never water it with tap
@@francescoburns8949 Thank you so much. I use rain water on my other plants or should I stick with the distilled? And can I give it a liile worm castings or no?
New Nepenthes owner here looking for information and I gotta say, this is one of the best plant videos I've seen in a while. You have a very clean, straightforward style of presentation and really hit all the points I was wondering about along with many things I didn't realize were important.
Wow! I was watching the video when I heard you mention you were from Canada. I just bought some plants from a Canadian grower here so I checked to see if it was you and sure enough it was! The plants are growing great, thanks Brad!
Your video couldn't have been more timely. I recently purchased a 6 in potted nepenthes for my greenhouse kitchen at the local garden centre. I needed nepenthes 101 because I really didn't know how to encourage those pitchers to grow. Now I will spray them daily as you suggested. Thank you so much.
Thanks! I just acquired a Nepenthes in Florida at a local farm supply store. We have a hatch of flies, and I wanted to use an environmentally safe removal method. Your video will help me keep the plant thriving and useful. I will keep it on the lanai during suitable weather.
Ventrata is indeed a REALLY fast grower. I have started about 6 new plants from my 4 year old mother plant. Very easy to start from cuttings. Also, to induce pitchering a light spray on the leaves with 1/4 strength orchid food works great every 2 weeks starting in spring.
My pitcher plant is growing bloody amazing...they are just massive and so many more have grown since I got it 10 months ago...I water it and spash water all over it about 3 times a week n half fill the saucer it hangs in...its always hanging up on my window rail so it gets lots of light
I have a ventrata that's sprouted a huge vine with bigger pitchers than the main plant. I'm tempted to prune and grow cuttings whilst we still have a few warm months left in the UK.
Just got a full grown nepenthes today and so excited! I had started to grow some from seeds I bought a few months back and already has some nice sprouting. This video is great! Put a lot of my concerns at ease. Thank you! I can grow phalaenopsis and boat orchids, and flytraps so this should turn out fine..
My first Nepenthes was a Sanguinea. Mine looks pretty close to yours! A bit smaller but it's only 3.5 years, so probably growing at the same rate. I love that it grows so fast, I have a Spathulata and it seems to grow at 1/10th the pace.
This video was great! I don't remember the exact name of mine but I you should it. I live in the state of Florida so my plants should love temperature and humidity during the summer time it's not as humid during fall and winter so I'll just keep spraying it for the pitchers keep developing.
"If you can take care of an orchid, you can take care of these guys" Nice, then i might try them someday! (Edited) you answered my question later in the vid, i'm glad to know i can feed them bloodworms meant for fish! Thank you for this detailled video!
This helps me a lot. From the way my nepenthes looks its a wine type and I should think of a way so it could stick to stuff and be able to move it inside if needed
walkingsugarcube depends on the tap water in an area. To many minerals etc aka hard tap water will not serve the plants well. But some places can just use straight tap
Wow! This was so helpful!! Thank you! I started with a Sarracenia Purpurea who is loving life on my patio eating flies (humidity from a nearby lake, so lucky). I just ordered a Nepenthes Ventrata and am excited :D!
Looks so beautiful, I have the viney one at 5 months now, I was kinda concerned why it grew very tall and after watching this video I guess it's normal lol
You've got an awesome collection there. Amazing variety. I'm considering getting a couple here. I'm in zone 4b/5a, Wisconsin. I know we have some native pitcher plants that do hibernate, but I was thinking perhaps getting something that I could keep outside with my pre-bonsai during the summer, then bring indoors during the winter. Sadly, I only have north facing windows with a 6 foot overhang outside, so the light is pretty low.
I can confirm that the humidity for Ventrata is important as mine in doors hasn’t pitchered since I bought it (I bought it around October so it’s been inside since) and it has a 35 watt sansi bulb and no growth and I haven’t sprayed or provided humidity barriers and our humidity hovers around 50% on average if not lower. I’m bout to move it outside once the carolina heat and humidity kicks in but what’s your best pick for one to grow purely in doors? I originally bought a pitcher plant with the intentions of killing the flies and gnats that build up in the summer season and I really don’t wanna have to bring the Ventrata in with whatever bugs may be on or in it.
Love your video, loads of detailed information. That I truly appreciate. I saw a pitcher itself in a floral arrangement. Was curious if l could start to grow a plant from it somehow? Yes, no, maybe so? 😕
I ended up with a Ventrata hybrid a florist gave me a deal on because she didn't want it to die and I had taken an interest in it. Lol. I've had it just over a year, and has several stalks and is growing really well hanging by my window. It starts to make pitchers, but they don't really form. I'll try giving it a mist when they start to form as suggested. I had no idea it was a hybrid at first. I had kept it in the same pot, repotted later, and the sticker under the sale one has said 'nepenthes alata.' But it just didn't look right. After researching, it has to be a ventrata. My second is a Nepenthes Bill Bailey seedling. Least I know what that one is. Lol
I’m getting a brownish colouring in the leaves in my pitcher plant, I have it sitting near the south facing window of my sunroom but it also gets indirect light from the east and west window, would moving it back from the window help?
I was told just misting these plants. A few times a day isn’t gonna cut it. They need to be around constant high humidity. I have my nepenthes in a greenhouse in my room with a humidifier that constantly keeps it at 75% humidity and they’re growing great .
actually it does take way more care than an orchid, the guy has a greenhouse, he is lowering the plant in summer, the soil is a special mix, and as I didn't went through the whole video yet, I am sure that they need special kind of demineralized or rain water ! they are tricky as hell ! but don't feed them hamburgers !
One of my pitchers on my new pitcher plant is brown at the top of the pitcher with the cap leaf also brown. The bottom half is still green. Should I wait until that whole pitcher is totally brown before trimming? Or could I trim it now? What would you suggest?
The ventrata is nice and I keep getting scammed by people because I want a pure alata species I kbow there's nothing special about the alata I just like the pitcher shape and coloring
could you tell - which spice from non-mountain has the best tolerance to low moist air? I havea lot of light and hot temperature (max 42C, min 15C) but moist is very-very low also(( is it possible to grow it?
I have some pitcher plants I bought at Home Depot. They’re losing their pitchers but they have black tips at the end of the vines. Should I cut the vines back to the leaves so the pitchers will grow back? I also have been misting the whole plant because I live on the San Diego Coast where it gets hot and dry. Now I know I’ve been harming them. I have them in full sun during the winter here because the sun is less intense. I did notice the one I’ve been misting the pitchers still has pitchers. I have a couple pitchers dying off the others. Should I cut the old pitchers off? Thanks for the video!!!

Anything except for lowland. Most intermediate and highland(hybrids) will do well in your temperatures and humidity. The intermediates MIGHT suffer a little, intermediates prefer to be a little more warm but they can easily tolerate highland conditions.
How do i know witch nepenthes I have? I got one on clearance on win when I seen it. It just says nepenthes on the care tag. I've had it a few months and the leaves are growing like crazy and its beautiful but its not pitchering. I've had it in my house hanging in my kitchen window and I have a light right above it. Ill get more moss to add but I can't figure out witch one I have since the pitchers haven't come yet.
