Collecting & Identifying Moss

  • Spring has officially sprung! It's been really nice outside and I just had to get out of the studio and bring you some candid content, from the outdoors. I've also pretty much depleted my moss reserves, so this is the perfect opportunity to stock up. Let's get mossy!
I know this one doesn't go as in depth on identifying moss as some of you may have liked, but I quickly realized this would have way more of a project than I anticipated, if I had. That said, I'll definitely do a dedicated video on it when I can find the time. Until then, I hope that the tips I gave in this video will help you at least get started.
For those of you wondering, most and I mean most mosses will work in a terrarium or vivarium. The propagation method that's linked below closely resembles that of a terrarium. With it, I've been able to grow everything except for some (not all) haircap and pillow mosses. That's why I don't recommend them. Additionally, the only one from this video that's hit or miss is hypnum moss. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I pretty much always has success with the others though.
Propagate Moss: • How to Propagate Your ...
I get asked a lot how to grow moss and I usually reference that video because there's not much to it. Light + Water = Happy Patches of Moss! Don't over think it. Aside from thoroughly cleaning them before use and trimming over time, there's not much else I do for them other than that. More light and more water is better than not enough. However, mosses are very resilient and will adapt to various conditions, regardless of the type.
I think that about covers everything I can think of for the moment. If you have any further questions, be sure to leave a comment and I'll do my best to get back to you! It felt so good to finally get outside again and bring you some more candid content! 100% voice overs was never intended to be the norm, but that's what happened when I moved because of noise pollution. Do you like a more candid video like this or the voice overs? Definitely will always do both styles, but I'm just curious what you think. Let me know!

    • @antonstroms407
      @antonstroms407 5 років тому +32

I do think the candid videos feel more like we're right with you, but the voice overs are effective in their own right. Both allow us to follow along with what you're saying- it's just the slightest bit more fun when it feels like we're getting horticultural lessons in person during the candid videos.

    • @SerpaDesign

I appreciate the feedback! I think I want to do more like this and then reserve the voice overs for videos that really need it. Some topics are just very involved and I think conveyed best as a voice.

I think voice overs should only be used if environmental sounds are so disruptive, the viewing not enjoyable or the message isn't discernible. And of course, if the narration is totally botched and filled with errors. For some reason, UA-cam viewers have gotten crazy with the quality of video demands over the past few years, treating regular folks as if they should have content resembling that of a major production studio. A dog barking in the background, a passing vehicle, make the event more real. Hearing you spread ballast in a tank or having pumps hum is how it really is.

i find woodland plants hard to keep alive grown in pots. i tried with the native violets growing around my house, they were gone immediately. but i do have success if they stay outside in the shade. i guess cool temps and circulating breezes are very important. mosses however have simple requirements as long as they are kept in a closed terrarium. i love the lichens growing on tree branches. they seem to need high light and can dry out and go dormant, waiting for the next rain.

A little tip.... when you harvest moss its much easier if you compress the moss and push it into itself to bunch it up as you scoop with the hand underneath. By compressing it into itself, rather than pulling on it which pulls it apart, you're able to keep the moss in a nice neat mound/ball without it falling apart. Moss actually compacts very well without damage.

I like how passionate you seem about moss - but having seen all you do with it I can understand why. And to be honest, they're gorgeous little plants...
Anyway, you've caused me a lot of work. Because of you I rescued an old, beat-up 4½-gallon tank from the trash and have started renovating it (getting rid of brown old silicone, removing the rim etc.) with the plan to make a small waterfall tank using mainly local wood, stone and mosses, and a few non-Danish aquatic and terrestrial plants as accents.
So basically I have two washing-up basins of moss on my window sill, one including a 4"-diametre mossy branch that will be part of the structure. You can never have too much moss, right?
And I KNOW my little fun project will look nothing like something made by a person with your experience and skill, but just planning it has been so entertaining that even if it's a complete failure it will have been worth it. And who knows; it might end up looking pretty if I throw enough moss at it?

Looked up moss out of curiosity, but I’m now invested.
Edit: also sometimes I see moss in someone’s backyard and I want to take it, but I don’t want to ruin their garden

Hey, real quick question about keeping terrariums. Recently (about a month ago) I created a small terrarium using an old mason jar and some plastic wrap for the lid. I watched several of your videos beforehand and did some of my own research in order to make my terrarium as good as possible. It has since been doing quite nicely, although I have now noticed that algae has started to grow within the false bottom/aquifer. I haven’t been able to find any information online on how exactly this may impact my terrarium and have not seen the topic mentioned in any of your videos. If you, or any other commenter, could shed some light on what I should do (if anything) then that would be much appreciated.
P.S. I love your channel. Keep up the good work!

A while ago I had a species of moss in my backyard, ever since my mom hired a landscaper, they’ve vanished and what’s left is a different species that I hate using for terrariums! As of recently. I figured out that a very small amount of the previous moss survived! A very small strip of it is growing on the back of an old piece of wood from a garden bed. So now I need to do what I can to grow it.

I had trouble getting liverwort to stay alive and spread. However I discovered through experimenting that creating a slope with whatever substrate preferably something well draining/sandy and placing it on said slope really helps it take off.

I collect outdoor moss, clean it real well to remove all soil and use it in my shrimp tanks and fish tanks. I collected all summer and laid it under my porch to have a moss carpet. It turned out quite well. I got most of mine in the woods, tree and rock. Lush ad full. @2:40 that's mainly what I use. The bog moss is great for my aquariums, produces alot of oxygen. Liked, subbed and hit the moss bell.

I had grabbed a few tiny patches of moss and put them on a rock in a Tupperware container back in October to try to observe how it grows and establish a potential source for a future project. It looks like very tiny emerald haircap, or star moss. I think it had the brown spore stick things, but it's just so tiny. It's growing well, I have it in a bright window, and I'm seeing growth down the sides of the rock too.
