When I was a kid my parents took us to Myrtle Beach for vacation.... along the way we had a flat tire. We all got out and waited for my dad to change it.... I was wondering
around on the side of the road that was near a field.... as I was walking around I realized there were hundreds and hundreds of these things growing in this field
next to the road. The ground was spongy and there were mounds of moss. The plants were growing among tall weeds... I was floored by how many there were. I
also noticed there were many sundews all around that were bright red and about the size of a quarter... there were so many you could hardly walk without stepping on
them.
This happened back in the 70's. Years later I went back to Myrtle Beach for a vacation and tried to find the spot (I knew it was near Conway, SC).... but for the most part
the area had been developed into a golf course.... I was never able to find the spot and I doubt it even exist anymore.
dont you love it, the government jails or fines you if you take some from the wild, however its ok for someone to lay a suitcase of $$$ on the table to develop a golf course. Same is true with the marijuana push in the states. It was a horrible offense if caught selling or growing, and having a felony charge slapped on you, however down the road the same state that jailed you and wrecked your life determines its ok to sell due to the revenue it will receive......
Very sad... No wonder why pollution is getting worse, greedy humans cut trees and exotic plants to build their "fancy" malls, apartment complex etc.
They didn't even use the land for something good. They used it on a fucking golf course.
@Locust Hypnosis You beat me to it lol. Was gonna say the same thing
This makes me sad
I named my fly trap Hydra, cause it just keeps growing more and more heads! I've grown it from seed, and consider it my child lol
Mines named Tom :))
Mine is audrey ^_^
Is it hard to grow them from seeds?
Also, how do we get seeds from the plants themselves?
I named mine Hydra too!!
I named mine Grimes after her song Venus Fly hehe
Here's a tip: If you want the plant to conserve its energy, you cut off the flower stalk as soon as it becomes visible, because flowering wears the plant out if it doesnt get fed.
Yes, I heard that many years ago too. Mine is slowing down for winter, but has a flower stalk so I was thinking of cutting it off.
K
@@bill-2018 if the flower stalk already flowered then it’s too late to cut it off and you’re better off leaving it on.
@@Tatusiek_1 OK, thanks, it's only just showing so not flowered yet.
So what happens if you feed it often and let it flower.
Best video on the Venus flytrap I’ve seen thus far.
Thank you for this video! I live in the desert, so our sun exposure might be too harsh for this plant. Any advice on how to help my Venus flytraps thrive in these conditions?
assuming you still have it…😭 just put it out for 6 hrs and then after keep it in a window. that’s what i do down here in south fl.
@@cherrymintzasmr797 leaving it outside for 6 hours during the summer will dry it out. The water here evaporates extremely quickly, unfortunately we don’t have humidity.
I randomly found a venus flytrap at walmart yesterday and I instantly picked it up and bought it! Loveee! ❤
When the leaves start dying off should I prune them or will they help fertilise the plant. Its a generic store bought plant im growing outdoors in the UK
Can you tell me what size pot they prefer? Would they rather be kinda cramped? Or do they need good amount of room to sprawl & stretch out?
Thanks
Appreciate the videos man
I think all of us planters understand the same thing and that is we don't have enough time in our life to plant everything is takes me a couple years to fully understand my plants and to have them from ways away from their homes and different climates, so I gotta learn their pros and cons like a human it take a bit to get to know someone yah know😝🤟
Excellent info, I thank you. Mine is now flowering and would love to grow some more
Please make a video on propogating fly traps from leaves. I would love to know how.
Same!
Are there any species of flytrap that don't need a seasonal period? If not, what about sundew and pitchers?
There’s no other species of Venus fly traps, I think drosera capensis (cape sundew) doesn’t require dormancy, pitcher plants aren’t all the same, American pitcher plants require dormancy, tropical pitcher plants don’t, and I’m not sure about heliamphora
Hi do i need to change the water everyday under the pot or can it be the same water for several days? Thanks
Question, during winter should I also have it sitting in water?
I have VFT, and they appear to be healthy but not as bright with the red. . . Even my red dragon VFT’s this year did not regrow red anymore, why is that? I have both some plants inside under artificial lights, and some outside.
Thank you for the information, I needed it I just got one.
Can you plant different kinds of Venus fly plants on the same pot?
A little extra bit: you can see a trap closing in the bottom right corner at 4:44
Thank you for the info
I just bought a Venus fly trap from Hobby Lobby and I live in northern Wyoming. Would a growlight be sufficient? because it does get cold here, until spring comes. I named my trap Audrey 3.
Do u bring them inside in the winter
Mine is in a pot with a little peat moss and a lot of clay soil
Will that work?
Is spring tap water ok?
Also is coco-coil(?) OK to use?
What is the best time of year to start seeds?
So I have had mine in the little container for a year almost now and there are so many just piling on top of each other. Should I replant it into a bigger plastic pot say like a 8 inch pot? By the way they are all laying flat.
Go up maybe a pot size. Use the type of soil recommended.
@@tdginter Thank you!
From the store how long til I can take them outside all day in my patio which gets at least 5 hours of sunlight? I don’t want to burn them.
With poorly cared for plants @ Home depot, etc. i acclimate them like any other plant i start indoors. An hour or two the first day (depending on the Sun) same the next, etc. for a week or so. I'm not sure if it's necessary or not but i err on the safe side. Make sure to repot them and get em out of those domes they stuck em in. Fly Traps are very easy.
Lone Wanderer thank you for that information.
Any advice for growing in the desert (Las Vegas)? We don't really have a normal winter and it's a regular 100-115⁰ for 6 mo out of the year and then drops only to maybe 40⁰ for a short winter.
Hello . Is live moss suitable for flytrap Venus?
How often can I feed them? I have mealworms for my gecko and I’d like to feed the plant with them
You probably just wanna feed 1-3 traps at a time because activating to much of them can hurt them, I’d probably use something else though considering they’re pretty slippery and can maybe chew through
@@zay_rat8942 thank you. How about the beetles, or if I cut the head off and trigger the trap?
@@Mbapaparaue you can feed them that way, I’m not sure about beetles though
Thank you, this was very informative
Hint,, Try 24 hour, year round light. Amazing results.
I've got her under 18 hour's of grow lights and have long spears growing up. Hope I have some seed pods.
What depth of pot do you recommend for vfts? People seem to recommend deep (5" or more) pots, but yours seem to all be doing fine with shorter pots.
I have soft tapwater. If I leave the tapwater out for 24hrs, can I use that?
Just got mine. I keep getting conflicting about sun light! I left mine in the sun for one day because it said they need sun but then he started brown. So I kept him out of the sun the next day. I think I will give him sun for about 4 hours a day and see what that does.
I’m not watching the plant all of the time, so how do I know it is getting enough insects.?
Hey man haven’t update for a while, where have you been?
Can it be house water is it ok if I brack the black off
I live in an area where we get heavy snow, can I still leave my fly trap outside all winter?
He said if it gets below 20°F bring it in and put it in a window sill, that way it still gets a bit of a chill.
if you want to leave them outside in the winter, cover them with pine needles burlap or water bit of insulation so they don’t freeze and unfreeze too fast which can kill them. And they can dry out in some scenarios if the plant unfreezes but the roots stay frozen
Hey I'm new to carnivorous plants, was wondering when your Sarracenia would be back in stock?
Where can I buy that plant and. Do you sell them
Do you suggest keeping them outside even in a VERY HOT climate?
yes, make sure they dont dry up and if you feel they are suffering from the heat, use shade cloth
I live near Phoenix. Will the flytrap stand direct Arizona sunlight ? How much light or how many hours? The hardware store where I bought my two had a full array of flytraps.
if you keep them wet they may be fine but if they are suffering from the heat, use shade cloth
mine was dieing in the window sill I put mine in the room with my grow lights on for 18 hour's of light. And now I have long spears coming up with out the traps do I have a seed pod growing ❓
It depends on what you're calling a spear. If it's growing somewhat straight up and hasn't formed a leaf or trap yet, then it could be the flower stalk.
Every where else I've read said to keep them in indirect sunlight
I keep mine out of strong direct sunlight. At this time of year the sun is not too strong, like today, so it's in it.
They will grow better in direct sunlight
Hello, how are you? I just discovered your channel and I love it, but I have a problem, I am from Mexico and I would love to get seeds of your plants to try to reproduce. How could I buy your seeds and plants? Thank you and best regards.
seeds are not true to cultivar
When is your B-52 coming back in stock?
Do you have a video on how to grow a Venus Flytrap from seeds? I just got some and want to do it correctly.
Seeds are done through sexual reproduction and are not true to the mother plant, and you have to be careful that they are not a scam so buy them from a reputable seller. All you have to do is sprinkle them on the wet media and wait, it can take up to a month before u see sprouts
I want more

Is 100% spring water ok?
Fresh rain water, Distilled water or RO water that is below 50ppm ONLY
I live in western Washington State and I want to get some Venus fly traps, is this a good place for them to live outside?
Yes
I ordered my first VFT from you guys about 6yrs ago. Ordered a single Dente I have given three away and have 6. During the winter months, I put them in a cold frame to allow dormancy. I hear if you don't allow full cycle they will only last about a year.
Where do you live?

Woah, deep.
Well said
if u think u killed ur venus flytrap in the winter, dig up your plant and check the rhizome. if it is white and firm, ur plant is very much alive! however, if the rhizome is all black and mushy, u have killed ur plant. i just wanted to give u that info. oh and btw, venus flytraps can live for up to 30 years, so if u think u can keep ur veus flytrap alive utill u die, that is not true.

One of the weirdest things Ive seen my flytrap eat were snails! Have you seen that before?
I've only seen it in videos but not with my actual VFTs.
The weirdest thing I've seen one eat is a small frog
Mine would eat beetles, until the stupid giant grasshoppers finished it off, plus the extremely dry climate of Texas, don’t get carnivorous plants if you live in Texas.
@@bugloverspiderlover8490 im in texas and have 64% average humidity, plants seem to be doing fine.
Well shoot Just bought one from Walmart and planted it in outdoor potting soil in a pot. It'll have to get the right soil for it now. Thanks for the tips
Thank you so much for this! Now I’m annoyed bc Walmart’s sell them and keep them next to registers and obviously they die from no food, water or light! What a damn shame!!!
You still alive?
Fresh owner to a venus flytrap and I'm so happy I found your channel, thank you for the useful information!
Slight correction: you CAN grow them on a windowsill so long as you have proper grow lamps running for about 12 hours every day.
Thank you for sending this! I came here for care advice because I just bought one and got so scared!
@Locust Hypnosis Your window is both east and west-facing?
Hey there! So I’m in la and my traps usually flourish and are doing very well actually! I just recently repotted one that outgrew it’s pot. However we are having a heatwave currently and yesterday was VERY hot. I came home today to see my it very wilted and all it’s traps flopped over. I rewatered & sprayed it well and the leaves and traps seem to be stiffening back up. But I don’t feel like I am out of the woods yet. Do you think it could be a bad repotting job or the bad heatwave? My other traps were fine. Maybe it was the combo of repotting and the heat?
I've read if you repot, you should do it during the dormant time. It disturbs them less as they are "sleeping" and not going thru a growth phase.
WOW! I did not know Venus Fly Traps were from North Carolina (I thought they came from Venus?!). Why don't they just call them "North Carolina" Fly Traps then? :)....I'm totally kidding. That is amazing "food for thought though",.....I honestly thought Venus Fly Traps were originally from the Amazon Rain forest or some place like Thailand. Pretty cool!
I'm from the UK and had one as a kid. I always assumed they were from the Amazon too. About 5 years ago I moved to Wilmington NC, which as this video says, is the center of the relatively small area where these grow in the wild. Was amazed when I saw them growing in swampy areas in the State Park and other local areas. I bought one a few years ago and it keeps dividing so I've got about 15 of them now.
@@jameslind1964 nice!
I grew up in North Carolina and had no idea they existed in the wild here until I saw some while hunting in a swamp around Wilmington. I thought I had made some sort of fascinating discovery until I did some research and found out they were indeed native plants and fairly common around that area. I believe there were pitcher plants around there too, the kind with the lid on it.
I'm in arizona and I heard they can't tolerate very hot temperatures. It regularly gets 100+ here should I keep it inside?
You should put it outside maybe at a time when it is not so hot so like in the morning or afternoon then bring it inside near a window for the rest of the day.
use shade cloth
04:45 bottom right corner of the screen-trap got triggered
Carnivorous and apparently herbocannibalistic.
So cool thanks hahaha!
This was very cool. I just bought one on a whim because they’re so unusual . The care instructions said not to keep it too wet, but I had my doubts ; so I’m glad I found you . I’ve got it under a grow light and have been feeding it insects. So far so good , but I will take your advice and move it outdoors with water. Looking forward to learning more about this great plant 👍🏻👍🏻
Man i wish my vft looked like that those are gorgeous
We found them growing by the lake where we had a cottage in Maine when I was a little girl. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I found them!
This is by far the best flytrap care guide ever. There is so much incorrect information about these and people treat them like houseplants. So we appreciate this thank you 🥺
I own property where they grow wild. It is interesting to see when they bloom. I actually have a few videos featuring them.
I named mine Swamp Thing. I'm excited to learn more about carnivorous plants. I hope I can keep her alive!
Did she make it
I live in Brazil, there’s any chance of buying some of your plants? And the shipping is available for international purchases?
if you are buying live plants, they'd probably be dead upon arrival, your best shot is getting seeds
@@jewiesnew3786 I got one from eBay, came with no problem
@@jewiesnew3786 Many seeds are scams that are completely different plants, and you never know what will grow from them even if it’s a venus fly trap they wont be true to any variety.
@@Tatusiek_1 that's why you should buy from a reputable seller. As for vfts, I buy them as clones from local growers in my area, you can join groups in fb or any other platform to find cultivars you like.
@@jewiesnew3786 I never bought seeds, when I bought mine, they were clones from a reputable seller done by tissue culture. No seed will be true to cultivar because it is sexual reproduction so there will be random mutations. Clones are true to the mother plant.
Hey thanks! I’ve been lookin through the pages online and they’re never too clear in some things and others they contradict themselves. This is very helpful! I just split a new plant tonite and wind up with 3 decent ones!
This video just made me order a Dente and Red Dragon from you guys. Wanted that B52 but they’re sold out 😔
Thank you soo much Devin! I have been looking for more detailed information on caring for venus flytraps for awhile now. You've provided more info in this video than anywhere else. I have 3 plants at the moment and I believe they are all of the dented variety, they aren't really red at all but have the short hairs, got 2 from the grocery store and 1 from a rare plant grower. I try to feed them once a week since they are inside but I've noticed when I feed one trap, all of the traps tend to close, not right away but they're often still closed a week to 2 weeks later. Is this normal? Am I overfeeding?
I just got my first plant and I live in San Bernardino County, which is located in California. The county I live in is very hot, desert geography, and winters get very cold...but you said even in the 20°’s is okay for the plant. What do you recommend for best care and successful growth of the plant since it gets very hot out here?
You live in a beautiful place
I'm super confused on the peat moss and sand and just the soil in general I wish there was a full video just dedicated to the soil to use.
I saw a recipe recently. Maybe on sarrancenia.com. I used 2 parts dry spaghum peat to 1 part pool sand. I wet half the peat till it was water logged, then mixed in the remaining items handful by handful til the whole mixture was like grainy bread dough. Then I covered my substrate with orchid moss..
Soil must be nutrient poor so to simulate the bogs since they get the rest of their nutrients from the insects they eat.
little buddy at 4:44 got confused and munched on that autumn leaf 😭
Thought I was the only one that saw that 😂
I live in Vegas where it is extremely hot, should I bring them inside when I feel it is to hot?
What you feel is too hot could be just fine for plants.
You need to figure out what their growing conditions should be and go from there.
What I mean by that is, if you have a spot that gets morning sun and afternoon shade, maybe it's OK. If you have a spot that has all day sun, then it could be fine as well, if you put them in a tray of water and don't let it go dry.
While each growing zone can have general directions, it's up to you to figure out what micro-climates or locations you have around your home and how to best support the plants you want to have.
they’ll be fine as long as they don’t dry up
Can you propagate these plants via cuttings?
yes you can but its hard to propagate from leaf cutting its much better to propagate from flower cuttinggs from the plant
I live in Colorado. I have started a Venus Flytrap in a terrarium. Do terrariums encourage growth in dry climates like mine?
Don't keep them in a terrarium, dry air is ok for them, just give them direct sunlight and have them sitting in a pot with destilled water at all times
Do not put them in a terrarium, just grow them outside and keep them moist. Colorado’s dryness isn’t that bad
I live in Canada so the outside part is out of the question
Yeah, I live in Whitehorse, Yukon. I've been growing my Venusflytrap's for more than 20 years on my windowsill same location year round. (my windowsill is very cold in winter. 5 to 10 C) and midnight sun in summer. Ironically, venusflytrap is a great indoor plant in Yukon.
I had the opposite problem at the equator. Too much sun all year round with no easy way to hibernate... killed 2 of my plants before giving up
I see people saying to cut off the flowers to preserve energy. Will anything bad actually happen if I leave the flowers? I think they're pretty, I didn't know that flytraps flowered
They’ll take energy away from developing traps, so if it’s mature and has enough traps you can keep them, you can also grow plants out of them if you cut the stalk off and plant it
I successfully over wintered my flytrap on Vancouver Island BC, probably the only place in Canada it has a chance!
what did u do?
@@EEZZVOLT Cut off the water a bit, and let it go dormant on the deck, thats about it. It can tolerate mild freezing.
This is the most informative and well presented video I've seen in UA-cam about VFTs. Clear voice with no nonsense. Thank you Devin!
So how do u feel about them being in terrariums?
Bad idea, they like being out in the open sun and like to experience the natural temperature shifts
Hmmm... i’ll Probably be getting myself some. Always loved the way these guys looked and I have a shitload of flies in my backyard patio.
Me too bru I got some and it alr started attracting flies on the first day after I potted them
What other carnivorous plants grow in the same soil as a Venus Fly Trap? Google tells me Intermediate Sundew and Yellow Pitcher Plant.
Also, how do you keep mosquitoes from spawning in the standing water of the tray?
Use mosquito bits to stop the larvae from spawning.
You guys never discuss the challenges of growing VFTs in central Florida. That would be a very interesting video guide.
Any video can't discuss challenges of growing VFTs in every location. All it can do is provide general guidelines. It's up to you as the owner of the plants, to find what works in your region or micro-climate.
Eg, many people are confused by how much sun or water a plant needs. That's because there is the general guidelines, and then there are the guidelines that works for some people in some area .
Watering 2-3x a week isn't going to work as well as having a pot sit in a tray, if they weather or sun is really hot. And saying it can be in full sun in Wisconsin summer is different from full sun in Florida summer or in Arizona summer.
I want a red dragon so bad
Wow!! This video taught me so much, I always threw mine away when winter came!! :( Also I kept them indoors cause I live in Tucson AZ, will they be ok with our heat?? Perhaps as long as they're sitting in distilled water?? Thank you for your video!

In Florida, having a vft in those boggy pots will definitely attract mosquitoes 🦟. And probably a bunch of other critters. So it may be a benefit to the plant, But it can backfire since they won't catch all the insects , especially fireants, bees, wasps etc. Would there be a better predatory plant for Hot humid South Florida with dry , sandy ,rocky soil? Replace the native soil with the type they need.
You can do American pitcher plants/sarracenia I think you can use some sundews too, not entirely sure though
