This video seems objective and more focused on certain historical facts and references, rather than opinions based on culture or nationalism. I enjoy the tone of the author, especially his mentioning of many theories and the uncertainty involved in the “true” historical record. I do wonder if the Proto-Albanians were related to the so called Pelasgians at all and what the author thinks of the Albanian language being it’s own branch in the Indo-European language tree.
No Pelasgian was not an Indo-European language, and we Albanians need to drop that ball. While it is possible that Greek and maybe Albanian preserve some elements from it, we know that Pelasgian was a remnant from before Indo-European people settled into Europe. There may be genetical connections, other than that we have nothing in common with Pelasgians. Albanian being its own branch just means that every other language related to Proto-Albanian (probably Illyrian or Thraco-Dacian) didn‘t survive as languages, which makes Albanian the sole survivor of its own branch. Albanian as a language survived because of its mountainous terrain. I mean it already started getting latinized, a couple of centuries more of roman occupation and Albanian would have been a fully latinized language.

You might check Messapic inscriptions who were an Illyrian tribe. They match Proto-Albanian words. Albanians are of mainly Illyrian stock to a very high degree. My DNA kit matches Daunians (illyrian tribe) in illustrative DNA and after that Thracians. I am R1b

Well, there are other qualitative data we can still tap into it, i.e., traditional costumes or the prevalence or rather the lack of endemic diseases, which still would make your point, we came from northern or central balkan, some say that we might be a branch of an ancient proto- romanian language, since the two languages share certain words that their origins dates back before the latinization of the Romanian language. Another interesting fact is that words related to animal husbandry, names of fauna, trees, and flowers are words of proto-albanian origins. And words related to the sea are loan words from Latin and Greek. Which means two things either the proto-Albanians were a sea faring people( if we would accept the Illyrian theory) but due to the invasions of Northern Tribes such as the Goths and later on the southern Slavic waves, the natives moved up to the mountains and lost the sea faring connection. Thus, with the pass of time, those words were lost, or we never were a sea faring people to begin with, but a collection of proto- Balcanic tribes who lived in more elevated areas. Also, the fact that we Albanianians traditionally have low iodine level indicates that we did not live close to the sea which means that especially during the first and second waves of southern slavs, the native folks moved to higher elevated areas. As for Slavic influence in Albania proper, we have a lot of topographic names that are Slavic. It is important to point out that these sites are not founded by the slavs per se, but the locals were influenced phonetically to a certain degree, even though in terms of gastronemy and other traditions it does not seem the case. For example, the ancient city of Berati which is a 2500 years old city, it's name is of Slavic origin, but In terms of ethnicity is made out of Albanians and southern Vlachs, a Romania group who has contributed toward the state-formation of modern day Albania and intersting enough of Modern day Greece as well. It is interesting to point out that at least , folks from proper Albania have politically and commercially had historically limited interactions with our Slavic neighbors. I think it has started to change. I believe that balkan people need to come together for our own greater good. Unluckily for us, our ancestors haven't attested the language we're speaking today like other Mediterranean civilizations, making it very hard for linguistics to reconstruct the evolution of our language. I generally believe that a branch of our ancestors, the proto-Albanians, indeed came from the Shtip - Nish - Shkup triangle and were pushed south-westwards by the Slavic invasions, but that was not the end of it though. In the territory we know as Albania today, there were living southern Illyrians and they got assimilated thus giving birth to the Albanian proper identity. (or I'd say Arberor identity) My paternal haplogroup is J2B2-L283 which has been found in the Cetina culture in high frequency, the predecessor of Illyrian-Dalmatian culture and the majority of Albanians is E-V13 which has been found in classical Greece and Thracia (I believe we got it from Thracians). Yet again I (like the average Albanian) am more southern leaning than Iron Age Balkaners and more northern leaning than Greeks, so I'd say that we're some sort of hybridization between southern Illyrians and eastern Illyrians or Dacians from Moesia with a % varying from 10 to 20 % of Slavic influx (autosomally) depending on where you go.

Albanians are genetically descended from Paeonians and Dardanians. Albanian homeland is not present day Albania. Ancestors of the Albanians came from the north, beyond the Jirecek line. Paeonians were most likely of Greek stock it is believed by scholars which explains the connection between Albanians and Greeks. Of course this is a problem with the Makedonskis of the Republic of North Macedonia who are Bulgarians and are trying to hijack Albanian history for themselves

Dardania last time I checked was Illyrian or thraco-illyrian because it was the place where Bardylis came from, which established the first Illyrian dynasty. During the arrival of the Slavs in the 7th century, these tribes, that we can describe as proto-Albanian, did indeed migrate southwards but the place they were stabilized in was not a desert. Southern Illyrians and Epirotes were living there and they got assimilated thus giving birth to the Albanian identity and bringing Albanians closer genetically to Greeks. Yup. Think we can safely say, the majority of people living in the Balkans are descended from Illyrians, Thracians, Slavs, Hellenes, Celts, Romans, Ottoman's no doubt. All in different proportion of course but not the less. Northern Illyrian tribes liek Dalmatae and Panonai were known to have been "Celiticized" culturally, just not linguistically, which makes sense considering the geographic surroundings and the Celtic presence throughout the Alps and Austria, Northern Italy etc. And likely genetically as well, which we can see a bit in the genetic makeup of the Northern Balkans. Southern Illyrians were likely closer to Hellenes. Some suggest that the ancient Albanian ancestors are indistinguishable from ancient Greeks really. And that it's not just Thracian and Illyrian combining, but all the Greeks and Macedonians on the fringes, and the Illyrians and Thracians in the region, all combining to form what are now both Albanians and Greeks, since they are, really, genetically very similar. Like as similar as Croats and Slovenes, in ancestry. The Balkans were pretty much the Europe's "drain" into the Mediterranean. Well really, the Adriatic, including Italy, and the Balkans/West Anatolia. All tribes converged on that region consistently for thousands of years. Italics, Germanics, Celts, Slavs, eventually, the Norse and "Normans" made it there as well. Which is I think why Italy and the Balkans are where most of the recorded history come from too. Anyway, it's interesting that generally, mainland Balkan populations are closer to one another than say Greek mainlanders to Greek Islanders, and Croat mainlanders to island and Coastal Croats. And it can be seen in the genetic makeup of the modern Balkans really. With Albanians and Greeks being shifted more towards the Mediterranean and Near East and Croats, Slovenes being a bit closer to Czechs, Poles, Austrians. But they all have the same components just different proportions. Coastal Croats tend to be closer to Peloponnesian and Italian populations, likely due to the Greek and Roman presence. While Island Greeks are closer to Italians and Arbaresh actually, than Arbaresh are to Balkan Albanians. At least from what I've read. But that makes sense too considering the amount of time they've been living in Italy. And Western Turks too, basically a Balkan branch population, with a little more Near Eastern flair. You got things mixed up a bit. Nobody is culturally Indo-European today if you refer to the Yamnaya and Corded Ware cultures. Genetically Albanians, just like most Mediterraneans, are mostly Anatolian Neolithic with additional Iran Neolithic and Steppe from Yamnaya (and not CWC as you correctly stated). Also ANE are a different group than Yamnaya, they're hunter-gatherers fron 20,000+ years ago. Their connection with Yamnaya is through EHG and CHG, both of which carried ANE ancestry (EHG about 75%, CHG had 10-20% if I'm not mistaken).

Something I've found very peculiar about these new theories of the origins of the Albanians is that they, otoh, say the Illyrian theory lacks evidence, only to propose a theory that lacks even more evidence. These include the Dardanian, the Carpathian and the Trojan theories. All of which are related proposals for the origin of the Albanians and all of which are based on extremely speculative linguistic arguments. It is assumed f.e. that because South Slavs adopted the names of certain placenames according to Albanian pronunciation, but not elsewhere, is an indicator of the place of Albanian origin. Meaning that somehow Albanians lived in Shtip, the Sharr Mountains and Nish...but not in Skopje, situated right between all of these places. It's hard to know exactly why the Slavs adopted the names of these places like they did, but it's hardly a good indicator of Albanian origin, especially because this theory excludes Albania itself as such a place in a very arbitrary manner. Extremely speculative. Moreover, think about blatantly stupid assumptions in Albanology that the Albanian pronounciation of such placenames developed from the Latin and Greek, when it could very well be that the ancestors of the Albanians always pronounced them as Nish or Shkodër and so on. Latin and Greek didn't have the /sh/ sound, so of course they wouldn't have written it down that way. Then it is assumed that because Albanian maritime vocabulary is heavily influenced by Latin that they couldn't have lived near the coast, when that's exactly where you'd expect that they'd be in contact to be exposed to these Latin maritime terms. Does the lack of native Iberian and Gaulic maritime vocabulary in Spanish, Portuguese and French indicate that native Iberians and Gauls didn't even know what a coastline is until the Romans taught them? Are we seriously to believe that the Latin and French influence on English maritime terminology indicates that the English didn't live near coasts? Stupid assumptions. Lastly, I know you are grasping for straws when you use these genetic arguments, because Thracians haven't been sampled to say that E-V13 is a Thracian haplogroup (and haplogroups do not belong to ethnicities). In fact, the oldest samples of E-V13, and the highest diversity, seem to have been in Pannonia. We've also found all of the ancestor clades of the three modern Albanian haplogroups in bronze-to-iron age Croatia.

Albanians can't be related to Illyrians since Albanians have too high a J2 haplogroup which was not a characteristic of Illyrians. Another oddity is that the Albanian language has similarities with Romanian. The Illyrian language connection has been trashed by linguists. The high J2 frequency amongst Albanians with the expected 10 to 1 or so ratio between J2 and J1, is dissimilar from northwestern Balkan populations. Past studies have shown however, that J2b is dominant in Albanian, rather than J2a. So there is no connection with Illyrians who were not of J2 lineage
Albanians as a whole have abundance of all the typical Mediterranean Neolithic lineages, except G: J2b, E1b1b1 and I. Again, characteristics lacking in Illyrians.

Red in a serious book that Albanian is one of the branches of Thracian part of Macro-Baltic family. The proof of it is that the genuine part of Romanian alledged from Dacian has positive connection with Albanian. You are actually wrong here. Paleo-Balkanic languages is a grouping of various extinct Indo-European languages that were spoken in the Balkans in acient times. Greek as a descendant of a Paleo-Balkanic language (Hellenic). Another example would be, as in the video stated, the proto-Albanian language from which modern Albanian developed from.

Ayub et al determined that Greeks cluster genetically with other south European populations (Like Italians) and are close to Basques in the phylogenetic tree. The proto-Albanian theory does not stand because we have evidence of Albanian language being spoken (as the stone writings in the area testify) by the Messapian who migrated from the region of today's Korca into the south-western Italic peninsula and that happened about 3000 years ago, much earlier than the Romans appeared in the Illyrian peninsula. Before the Romans most population moves were from Balkan towards Italy due to pressures from the east. In my opinion, all three theories are true, hence the complex DNA. There is something to be analyzed about Latin and Greek loaning or borrowing from Albanian. What is Latin, how did it get formed, who were the populations who contributed to it? Be careful with following what western widely accepted concepts are. There is much propaganda and arrogance in them. In my opinion there are many Latin words that clearly seem to be nothing else but Albanian short sentences. Some words are short and very similar but they can only be explained in Albanian. Of course the Romans were not one ethnically pure population, they were an empire and as such their population grew by many ethnic groups via migration, slavery, enrollment in military etc. Latin as a language had no choice but to grow through the same process. Just like English has done more recently. When Italy was united by Garibaldi there were still many languages spoken in the peninsula that were very different from Italian. I do not claim that they were named by the Albanians (because history is a total darkness) but the Albanian language preserves the oldest form of the Indo-European bed. So as long as it has been preserved and not assimilated, it means that it was a language used by a people who had a dominant role in the Balkans. being the first to name the toponym means that you are there for a time that even history itself cannot. that's enough and no one can reject you. What is written on paper today by pseudo-historians and pseudo-linguists are just ridiculous interests for me. Hi there, I actually wanted to add that there is a project called Rrënjet (roots in english) that is collecting all the data of albanian males(y-haplo group) who have tested themselves using independent labs. The project goal is to create a database large enough so it can give us a picture of who we albanians are. So far at least 1650 samples(which is fairly large for a country of the Albania's size) have been collected and categorized. The results are as follow: 80% of Albanians of Kosovo and 75% of Albanians of proper Albania belong to the following three haplogroups: EV13, J2B-L283, R1B-Z2013 which based on the DNA studies of old Ilyrian tombs found in southern Serbia,Croatia and some Ilyrian tombs in Albania proper, match with these ancient haplogroups. This proves scientifically that over 2/3 of Albanians are natives of western balkans. Secondally, another interesting finding (which technically was known by many) is that Albanians are overall one of the most homogeneous people of europe, meaning that we Albanians can trace our origins from only 20 ilyrian men, who after the collapse of the Roman Empire and the early incoming waves of slavic people; (The illyrian tribes went through a near total population collapse during this time ) Moved up to nearby mountains that we all Albanians can trace our paternal lineage, which is really crazy when you think about it. We can see this phenomena in the DNA data that the Project Rrënja has compiled which shows the Albanians of Kosovo paternal lineage comes from the ilyrian tribes of Dardania and some from the other ilyrian tribes of Mat-Diber region. From these two paternal lineages both regions of modern day Albania and Kosovo were repopulated. This has major implications for it debunks the theory of Serbian academics who during the 20th century made the claim that the Albanians of Kosovo moved from the Alps of Albania to Kosovo where in fact it was the opposite. The Ilyrians of Dardania(today Kosovo) were the ones who repopulated this western balkan region after 7-8th Century AD. Another interesting fact which you pointed out in this video and that the Project Rrënja confirms it as well is that in Albania proper 15% of the Albanians have slavic origins( This is due to the early slavic waves and not due to invasions of the slavic-emperies, i.e., serbian or Bulgarian) As for our southern neighbours, greeks have even a higher % of Slavic DNA than Albanians, up to 25% od the entire population. It is interesting to point out that the Albanians of Kosovo have one of the lowest slavic DNA % in the whole Balkan, prove that your video is based on some real solid research. Albanians do not have the genetics associated with Illyrians. Albanians are closer to the genetics of the Greeks in that they have the mediteranean haplogroups. Albanians are genetically descended from Paeonians and Dardanians. Albanian homeland is not present day Albania. Ancestors of the Albanians came from the north, beyond the Jireck line. Paeonians were possibly of Greek stock it is believed by scholars which explains the connection between Albanians and Greeks.

I do wonder if the Proto-Albanians were related to the so called Pelasgians at all and what the author thinks of the Albanian language being it’s own branch in the Indo-European language tree.
No Pelasgian was not an Indo-European language, and we Albanians need to drop that ball. While it is possible that Greek and maybe Albanian preserve some elements from it, we know that Pelasgian was a remnant from before Indo-European people settled into Europe. There may be genetical connections, other than that we have nothing in common with Pelasgians.
Albanian being its own branch just means that every other language related to Proto-Albanian (probably Illyrian or Thraco-Dacian) didn‘t survive as languages, which makes Albanian the sole survivor of its own branch. Albanian as a language survived because of its mountainous terrain. I mean it already started getting latinized, a couple of centuries more of roman occupation and Albanian would have been a fully latinized language.

Well, there are other qualitative data we can still tap into it, i.e., traditional costumes or the prevalence or rather the lack of endemic diseases, which still would make your point, we came from northern or central balkan, some say that we might be a branch of an ancient proto- romanian language, since the two languages share certain words that their origins dates back before the latinization of the Romanian language.
Another interesting fact is that words related to animal husbandry, names of fauna, trees, and flowers are words of proto-albanian origins. And words related to the sea are loan words from Latin and Greek.
Which means two things either the proto-Albanians were a sea faring people( if we would accept the Illyrian theory) but due to the invasions of Northern Tribes such as the Goths and later on the southern Slavic waves, the natives moved up to the mountains and lost the sea faring connection. Thus, with the pass of time, those words were lost, or we never were a sea faring people to begin with, but a collection of proto- Balcanic tribes who lived in more elevated areas.
Also, the fact that we Albanianians traditionally have low iodine level indicates that we did not live close to the sea which means that especially during the first and second waves of southern slavs, the native folks moved to higher elevated areas.
As for Slavic influence in Albania proper, we have a lot of topographic names that are Slavic. It is important to point out that these sites are not founded by the slavs per se, but the locals were influenced phonetically to a certain degree, even though in terms of gastronemy and other traditions it does not seem the case.
For example, the ancient city of Berati which is a 2500 years old city, it's name is of Slavic origin, but In terms of ethnicity is made out of Albanians and southern Vlachs, a Romania group who has contributed toward the state-formation of modern day Albania and intersting enough of Modern day Greece as well.
It is interesting to point out that at least , folks from proper Albania have politically and commercially had historically limited interactions with our Slavic neighbors. I think it has started to change.
I believe that balkan people need to come together for our own greater good. Sure, we will argue about many historical events, but as long as we exchange ideas, goods, and services, we all will gain out of this.

Unluckily for us, our ancestors haven't attested the language we're speaking today like other Mediterranean civilizations, making it very hard for linguistics to reconstruct the evolution of our language.
I generally believe that a branch of our ancestors, the proto-Albanians, indeed came from the Shtip - Nish - Shkup triangle and were pushed south-westwards by the Slavic invasions, but that was not the end of it though.
In the territory we know as Albania today, there were living southern Illyrians and they got assimilated thus giving birth to the Albanian proper identity. (or I'd say Arberor identity)
My paternal haplogroup is J2B2-L283 which has been found in the Cetina culture in high frequency, the predecessor of Illyrian-Dalmatian culture and the majority of Albanians is E-V13 which has been found in classical Greece and Thracia (I believe we got it from Thracians).
Yet again I (like the average Albanian) am more southern leaning than Iron Age Balkaners and more northern leaning than Greeks, so I'd say that we're some sort of hybridization between southern Illyrians and eastern Illyrians or Dacians from Moesia with a % varying from 10 to 20 % of Slavic influx (autosomally) depending on where you go.
Albanians do not have the genetics associated with Illyrians. Albanians are closer to the genetics of the Greeks in that they have the mediteranean haplogroups. Albanians are genetically descended from Paeonians and Dardanians. Albanian homeland is not present day Albania. Ancestors of the Albanians came from the north, beyond the Jirecek line. Paeonians were most likely of Greek stock it is believed by scholars which explains the connection between Albanians and Greeks. Of course this is a problem with the Makedonskis of the Republic of North Macedonia who are Bulgarians and are trying to hijack Albanian history for themselves

Dardania last time I checked was Illyrian or thraco-illyrian because it was the place where Bardylis came from, which established the first Illyrian dynasty.
These were much like "Serbia's" Illyria because they received much of the northern Illyrians being displaced by the Scordiscis, who were celtic tribes.
During the arrival of the Slavs in the 7th century, these tribes, that we can describe as proto-Albanian, did indeed migrate southwards but the place they were stabilized in was not a desert.
Southern Illyrians and Epirotes were living there and they got assimilated thus giving birth to the Albanian identity and bringing Albanians closer genetically to Greeks.
This is the first theory, the second theory is that we directly derive from a central Albanian tribe called "Abroi" or "Albanoi" quoted by Polybius in 2nd century AC.

Yup. Think we can safely say, the majority of people living in the Balkans are descended from Illyrians, Thracians, Slavs, Hellenes, Celts, Romans, Ottoman's no doubt. All in different proportion of course but not the less.
Northern Illyrian tribes liek Dalmatae and Panonai were known to have been "Celiticized" culturally, just not linguistically, which makes sense considering the geographic surroundings and the Celtic presence throughout the Alps and Austria, Northern Italy etc. And likely genetically as well, which we can see a bit in the genetic makeup of the Northern Balkans. Southern Illyrians were likely closer to Hellenes. Some suggest that the ancient Albanian ancestors are indistinguishable from ancient Greeks really. And that it's not just Thracian and Illyrian combining, but all the Greeks and Macedonians on the fringes, and the Illyrians and Thracians in the region, all combining to form what are now both Albanians and Greeks, since they are, really, genetically very similar. The Balkans were pretty much the Europe's "drain" into the Mediterranean. Well really, the Adriatic, including Italy, and the Balkans/West Anatolia. All tribes converged on that region consistently for thousands of years. Italics, Germanics, Celts, Slavs, eventually, the Norse and "Normans" made it there as well. Which is I think why Italy and the Balkans are where most of the recorded history come from too.
Anyway, it's interesting that generally, mainland Balkan populations are closer to one another than say Greek mainlanders to Greek Islanders, and Croat mainlanders to island and Coastal Croats. Showing far more ancestral homogenization the further central in the peninsula. Which makes sense, and that was likely always the case.
And it can be seen in the genetic makeup of the modern Balkans really. With Albanians and Greeks being shifted more towards the Mediterranean and Near East and Croats, Slovenes being a bit closer to Czechs, Poles, Austrians. But they all have the same components just different proportions. Coastal Croats tend to be closer to Peloponnesian and Italian populations, likely due to the Greek and Roman presence. While Island Greeks are closer to Italians and Arbaresh actually, than Arbaresh are to Balkan Albanians. At least from what I've read. But that makes sense too considering the amount of time they've been living in Italy.
And Western Turks too, basically a Balkan branch population, with a little more Near Eastern flair. But within close genetic proximity.

You got things mixed up a bit. Nobody is culturally Indo-European today if you refer to the Yamnaya and Corded Ware cultures. Genetically Albanians, just like most Mediterraneans, are mostly Anatolian Neolithic with additional Iran Neolithic and Steppe from Yamnaya (and not CWC as you correctly stated).
Also ANE are a different group than Yamnaya, they're hunter-gatherers fron 20,000+ years ago. Their connection with Yamnaya is through EHG and CHG, both of which carried ANE ancestry (EHG about 75%, CHG had 10-20% if I'm not mistaken).

Something I've found very peculiar about these new theories of the origins of the Albanians is that they, otoh, say the Illyrian theory lacks evidence, only to propose a theory that lacks even more evidence. These include the Dardanian, the Carpathian and the Trojan theories. All of which are related proposals for the origin of the Albanians and all of which are based on extremely speculative linguistic arguments. It is assumed f.e. that because South Slavs adopted the names of certain placenames according to Albanian pronunciation, but not elsewhere, is an indicator of the place of Albanian origin. Meaning that somehow Albanians lived in Shtip, the Sharr Mountains and Nish...but not in Skopje, situated right between all of these places. It's hard to know exactly why the Slavs adopted the names of these places like they did, but it's hardly a good indicator of Albanian origin, especially because this theory excludes Albania itself as such a place in a very arbitrary manner. Extremely speculative.
Moreover, think about blatantly stupid assumptions in Albanology that the Albanian pronounciation of such placenames developed from the Latin and Greek, when it could very well be that the ancestors of the Albanians always pronounced them as Nish or Shkodër and so on. Latin and Greek didn't have the /sh/ sound, so of course they wouldn't have written it down that way. Then it is assumed that because Albanian maritime vocabulary is heavily influenced by Latin that they couldn't have lived near the coast, when that's exactly where you'd expect that they'd be in contact to be exposed to these Latin maritime terms. Does the lack of native Iberian and Gaulic maritime vocabulary in Spanish, Portuguese and French indicate that native Iberians and Gauls didn't even know what a coastline is until the Romans taught them? Are we seriously to believe that the Latin and French influence on English maritime terminology indicates that the English didn't live near coasts? Stupid assumptions.
Lastly, I know you are grasping for straws when you use these genetic arguments, because Thracians haven't been sampled to say that E-V13 is a Thracian haplogroup (and haplogroups do not belong to ethnicities). In fact, the oldest samples of E-V13, and the highest diversity, seem to have been in Pannonia. We've also found all of the ancestor clades of the three modern Albanian haplogroups in bronze-to-iron age Croatia.

Albanians can't be related to Illyrians since Albanians have too high a J2 haplogroup which was not a characteristic of Illyrians. Another oddity is that the Albanian language has similarities with Romanian. The Illyrian language connection has been trashed by linguists. The high J2 frequency amongst Albanians with the expected 10 to 1 or so ratio between J2 and J1, is dissimilar from northwestern Balkan populations. Past studies have shown however, that J2b is dominant in Albanian, rather than J2a. So there is no connection with Illyrians who were not of J2 lineage
Albanians as a whole have abundance of all the typical Mediterranean Neolithic lineages, except G: J2b, E1b1b1 and I.

Red in a serious book that Albanian is one of the branches of Thracian part of Macro-Baltic family. The proof of it is that the genuine part of Romanian alledged from Dacian has positive connection with Albanian. Illyrians is an etero-ethnonym and the language is known by some 2 words if I remember well and some persons names without any clue if they are genuinely illyric ones. In the same book (Sergent) Dalmatian is a branch of macro-latin family, but the remains are mainly with family names, so very scarce. Ayub et al determined that Greeks cluster genetically with other south European populations (Like Italians) and are close to Basques in the phylogenetic tree. Just like English has done more recently. When Italy was united by Garibaldi there were still many languages spoken in the peninsula that were very different from Italian. Languages borrow words as synonyms for sure but mostly they borrow words to reflect new concepts that do not exist in the borrowing culture.

Hi there, I actually wanted to add that there is a project called Rrënjet (roots in english) that is collecting all the data of albanian males(y-haplo group) who have tested themselves using independent labs.
The project goal is to create a database large enough so it can give us a picture of who we albanians are.
So far at least 1650 samples(which is fairly large for a country of the Albania's size) have been collected and categorized.
The results are as follow: 80% of Albanians of Kosovo and 75% of Albanians of proper Albania belong to the following three haplogroups:
EV13, J2B-L283, R1B-Z2013 which based on the DNA studies of old Ilyrian tombs found in southern Serbia,Croatia and some Ilyrian tombs in Albania proper, match with these ancient haplogroups.
This proves scientifically that over 2/3 of Albanians are natives of western balkans.
Secondally, another interesting finding (which technically was known by many) is that Albanians are overall one of the most homogeneous people of europe, meaning that we Albanians can trace our origins from only 20 ilyrian men, who after the collapse of the Roman Empire and the early incoming waves of slavic people; (The illyrian tribes went through a near total population collapse during this time ) Moved up to nearby mountains that we all Albanians can trace our paternal lineage, which is really crazy when you think about it.
We can see this phenomena in the DNA data that the Project Rrënja has compiled which shows the Albanians of Kosovo paternal lineage comes from the ilyrian tribes of Dardania and some from the other ilyrian tribes of Mat-Diber region.
From these two paternal lineages both regions of modern day Albania and Kosovo were repopulated.
This has major implications for it debunks the theory of Serbian academics who during the 20th century made the claim that the Albanians of Kosovo moved from the Alps of Albania to Kosovo where in fact it was the opposite.
The Ilyrians of Dardania(today Kosovo) were the ones who repopulated this western balkan region after 7-8th Century AD.
Another interesting fact which you pointed out in this video and that the Project Rrënja confirms it as well is that in Albania proper 15% of the Albanians have slavic origins( This is due to the early slavic waves and not due to invasions of the slavic-emperies, i.e., serbian or Bulgarian)
As for our southern neighbours, greeks have even a higher % of Slavic DNA than Albanians, up to 25% od the entire population.
It is interesting to point out that the Albanians of Kosovo have one of the lowest slavic DNA % in the whole Balkan, prove that your video is based on some real solid research.
Still it is not clear why the albanian language lacks words related to the sea, most likely the ilyrians tribes who later underwent the process of Albanization (since there are ilyrian tribes who became slavic or adapted the helenic culture) lost the sea faring conection.

Albanians do not have the genetics associated with Illyrians. Albanians are closer to the genetics of the Greeks in that they have the mediteranean haplogroups. Albanians are genetically descended from Paeonians and Dardanians. Albanian homeland is not present day Albania. Ancestors of the Albanians came from the north, beyond the Jireck line. Paeonians were possibly of Greek stock it is believed by scholars which explains the connection between Albanians and Greeks.
