I was a police crime scene investigator for 10 years. I can tell you that there is nothing that will penetrate deeper into buildings or cars than the 7.62X39 round. I have been on crime scenes where the round went all the way through a house from side to side, lodging in the exterior wall of the house next door. I've also seen it travel all the way through the the trunk, both the back and front seats, through the person driving who was found dead in the car with the round lodged in the firewall of the car after having penetrated the dash in front of the driver. This is the A10 Warthog of rifle rounds. If you need to take out an attacker hiding behind a car, wooden fence or the interior of a house within a hundred yards, the 7.62X39 is your round. From a decent rifle, it is accurate to within 300 yards. They should never stop making this round, it was designed to be effective in combat within a hundred yards with iron sights and it is exactly that.

There is reason why some people prefer the latest CZ Bren 2 over SCAR-L/SCAR-16. The former is one of few platform that is designed to shoot 7.62x39 and other rounds, while the SCAR only stick with the 5.56. Given the fact that US now develop something like 6mm round that basically "heavy" intermediate cartridge, closer to 7.62x39 its just show how the round effectiveness.

I never calculated drop but I can tell you this, I used to shoot the SKS at 400 yds on a range at steel hog sized targets. The steel was at least 1/4" thick. It was no problem hitting them and it consistently knocked them down. Don't underestimate this round.

Primary Arms makes one that is for both the 7.62x39 and 300 blackout both, since their trajectories are so similar, and you just sight in whichever round you're using at the recommended yardage, and your holdovers for range shooting out to 400 or 500 yards with those cartridges is already there for ya. Makes it a lot easier to consistently hit every shot, there isn't much thought process involved. I believed its referred to as a combat reticle, i forget the acronym, but, its also helpful for combat against hogs or white tail. 👌

@ Kenny McNutt: 7.62x39 has an undeserved reputation for being an inaccurate cartridge, primarily because the most-commonly encountered rifles in the caliber are AKM/AK47 variants whose inherent accuracy isn't always all that hot. I tested the 762x39. it had a perdictical drop until it hit 220 yards. At that point it fell very fast. It is a very accurate round at certain distances. The SKS will be better at distance than the AK due to its more rifle like construction and longer barrel. I have 3 Aks. 1 with a really good scope then another with night vision and the 3rd with an Eotech. These 3 guns fill all my AK Needs. I Also have 4 ARs set up the same way. If you ask my preferences? Each round has its roll. I hunt hogs with my AKs and dear with my ARs. I assume you already know this so this comment is for people on the fence on the decision between the 2 different rifles. I hope this helps out. There's a Russian AK channel here on UA-cam where he puts to rest the myth of it not being accurate over long distance. He explains that imported AK's into the US have to go through a refitting when imported, but Russian AKs available in Russia are accurate right from the factory.
He demonstrates from standing, 300 meter hits, six out of six shots (unedited), then prone 600 and 800 meters hitting the man-sized target in the chest - unedited he takes the camera to the target to prove his hits.
So true factory AKs ARE accurate rifles.

7.62x39 still is effective for modern uses just as 5.56 or 308 are still effective. I do not jump on this trend of these exotic calibers that you often times can't find the ammo for (even before pandemic panic buying). 5.56 & 7.62x39 are the most commonly issues military cartridges issued in the world, no matter where you are there is a very strong probability finding either 5.56, 308, or 7.62x39, good luck finding .224 or 6.8.

I have two ARs chambered in 762x39. A Radical Firearms carbine that uses C-Point mags and a CMMG Mutant pistol that takes regular AK mags. They both cycle ammo perfectly. The earlier problems with light primer strikes and mags not cycling ammo are long gone. I added the 762x39 ARs to my collection because of familiarity with the platform, plus to take advantage of cheap ammo instead of breaking the piggy bank slinging 300 Blackout, 308 Win etc at the range.

I have an ar 180 chambered in 7.62x39 and think its a great gun. Only problem with it is feeding and extraction with various types of ammo. Cheap Russian surplus tends to get stuck feeding into the action, and i've had the extractor break the rim on a couple of occasions. That being said, once you find a good ammo and adjust the blow back its stellar. Next to no recoil, super accurate up to 200 yards, and the heavier bullet means it puts deer on the ground in a hurry. Dont get me wrong, I know the AR platform was built with the .223 in mind, but don't knock the concept until you try it.

I like 7.62x39 because it's still cheap. Cheap ammo means you'll practice more. More practice means you'll generally hit what you're aiming at. Lotsa hits builds confidence. A local pawn shop was selling Wolf Polyformance for $4.50 a box, and since I would buy several boxes at a time, the guy would let it go for 4-even out the door. That party lasted until the virus lockdown. Now his shelf is empty and he doesn't know when he'll be able to get more. When and if it does come back, I think we've seen the last of the $4 Wolf forever.

Just like most calibers. They have their specific uses. If I want a hard hitting intermediate cartridge I grab my 7.62x39 AK. If I want a bit more precision and or distance I grab my 5.56 AR. If I want hard hitting, precision and range I grab .308 or 54r. Just a few examples I can think of and not saying some of the uses overlap each other.

It will work out to 300 yards. At that range you only have about a one foot drop, and the energy delivered is comparable to a .357 Magnum from across the room.
The real problem with the range of the 7.62x39mm out of an AK platform is the typical sights on an AK. Stock irons on an AK are crude and hard to shoot well with for most people past 200 yards. But with practice and skill it can be done.
Rob Ski over at AKOU just completed his 5K test on the new Zastava M-70. At the end of the test he demonstrated hits - four out of five rounds fired - on a man-sized steel silhouette at 500 yards. That was with the iron sights and Tulammo. Now, most people - including me - are not at that level of marksmanship, but it just goes to show what CAN be done with a well-made AK, even with irons and cheap ammo.
But as others have pointed out, real world, WROL scenario, the vast majority of people will not shoot that far. If I had to defend my block against an armed Antifa/NFAC-type element attempting to impose a CHAZ-type situation, there is no way I would be shooting at greater than 200 yards, and 100 yards would be the probable realistic max range. Heck, for just my personal suburban lot, 35 yards is all I would be dealing with and for that I could just use my .357 revolver.
Anyway, as a defensive carbine chambering, 7.62x39mm is the best there is IMHO. That was one thing the Russkies definitely got right.

I had been a SKS person for along time, and never got into a the AK 47. But did a lot of research on the AR47s. Lets just say mine with a 18" barrel runs brass and steel flawlessly! And its cheap AR "accurate" on steel ammo at 100 yards . lol.. The AR47 feeding problem ect, is from 5 years ago or you can't trouble shoot simple things/ search the web at this point if that's holding you back.. my $0.02.
100% agree with you that 7.62 is a 200 yard gun, yes people launch them out to 400 but the drop is crazy. I love 7.62x39 and 5.56 they both hold a great place in firearms history and sport shooting.

Any quality AR-15 chambered in 7.62X39 using quality magazines like the C Products Defense mags will run steel all day long. They generally include the slightly longer 'enhanced' firing pin. I also added the Hiperfire Reflex trigger with the $6.50 7.62X39 cam over spring set. I was having 30% failures with the very hard primer 50 year old Soviet Bloc ammo. Now it eats anything I feed it. Nice platform. Of course the AK's were born to eat everything which makes them a very ugly but functional firearm. I like both of them.
