School doesn't work because students are taught to memorize a bunch of facts without knowing how they relate to the world. This is rote learning vs comprehension.
As an adolescent, interested in learning, I love educational graphic novels, and I would really love more of them! This is a great idea, and making learning fun with graphic novels can make great strides in reaching unengaged kids. GREAT TED talk!
Gene Luen Yang is an excellent graphic novelist. I love how, when he talks about things like race and religion, he's very nuanced. Personally, I recommend Boxers & Saints, The Shadow Hero, and, of course, American Born Chinese.
I was just reading another of his works: Superman Smashes the Klan. It’s loosely based on a story arc from the old Superman radio show, and it’s about Superman defending a Chinese American family from the Klan of the Fiery Cross (a stand in for the Klu Klux Klann).
Ted talks are so valuable. I’ve been able to find value in everything even if it’s not directly related to my business or channel 🙌🏼 .... big marvel fan here Btw 😁
Hey, with my last girlfriend. She had a hard time reading but when I showed her comic books, she found out that she loved reading and started to read more traditional books after that.
donald laube when did i mention boredom? My point was that many republicans are always saying "video games not guns cause mass shooting and delinquency" which is similar to "comics cause delinquency"
I am so excited to see a fellow comic lover who can explain what I believe is where the world of comics are going and can benefit our young generation to express themselves in a creative and innovative way. I myself am looking to be an advocate for change in this area. Keep up the amazing work. Great TedTalk!
I've been obsessed with comics lately, so this is great! Personally, I like the indie publishers and particularly the horror and sci-fi stuff better than Marvel or DC though.
It really is a shame that comics aren’t in k-12 cause my college art teacher actually taught his class with comics as a perfect example (granted it was art and story telling but it’s still a good example)
I teach special education ELA at the high school level. I've always had comics and graphic novels as an option in my classroom. But this year I have been more interested in harnessing their power to help my students improve their reading skills. Most of my students have learning disabilities in reading and writing, including Dyslexia. I'm excited to use comics and graphic novels even more to help my students!
There's a set of computer science textbooks called Head First that agrees with this idea, combining visual and textual elements to get the idea of the lesson across.

No Starch Press has a whole series of Science Manga I own The Manga guide to Molecular Biology and The Manga guide to Electricity. I would have love to have learned through this medium.
It would be special to have a teacher make me a comic and a great visual way to be able to re trace an equation or train of thought should I get lost . You never know what will click for a student so it's important for teachers to tap into their many talents that may be outside of the curriculum and think outside of the box !
I collect comics Seduction Of The Innocent 1st printing can bring 1000$ USD. Almost bought a copy a few weeks back 6:56 and the whole book is technobabble.
Not sure I agree with taking down the Elizabeth Holmes talk. Sure you guys are embarrassed you didn't do your homework on her, but now you can turn that into a lesson about doing your homework before holding someone up as a positive example.
Oh boy he thought comics would make him look cool. Yeah I made the same mistake with my velcro shoes in 5th grade. Good thing the what are those meme wasn’t a thing.
i disagree. i think this guy is biased because he's been a cartoonist for so long. "if all you have is a hammer, everything starts to look like a nail" comes to mind. this should be something that a few slides with good diagrams and text can fix. slides can even be printed out with a similar format. the problem with comics is that it has to be a story. which takes away from the clarity of purely the information. it's hard to use a story as a reference afterwards. from adding spatial effects to his video lectures (distractions) and bored students, i get the feeling he needs to focus on the clarity of his lectures and that their too long. let students be blown away by how short and simple they are
Maddie Patty lol, yes i recognize it. thanks, i respect yours too. i don't think our opinions are necessarily that different. i think the confusion came mostly from the many possible assumptions people can make about whether the guy has tried using slides and if he was also handing them out or what a comic means to him (he's not very specific). the comic format probably forces him to be really short. despite my criticism i do like his enthusiasm
I see this comment as "Pot calling the kettle black" ;) I mean limiting the role of comic just to transfer short information from teacher to student. The modern approach to teaching is not just giving information to remember or "proper" understanding of a given problem. It's also to inspire, stimulate curiosity, give sense of opportunity. Making students liking a comic book character can stimulate their desire to act. Social media showed us how important are emotions according to undertake the action. It's not about to throw away good working methods. It's the matter of using the power of comics in education. It's not about the substitution. It's the matter of enriching the palette of methods to use in school.
D.C. (dark horse/VERTIGO) sandman, hellblazer, fables, Y: the last man, preacher, hellboy, Batman ect.. no contest! Most people only say marvel because of movies
Mikey No Bones yes, i agree. It is arguable that DC's films at the moment aren't of a paticularly high quality, however this is partially because DC and many od it's characters were made at a time when films weren't a major medium to create art. Because of this the characters weren't created for the screen and don't always transfer over to it easily. That's not to say it's impossible to transfer classic DC characters to the screen, for example the dark night trilogy was amazing and that was one of DC's classic characters, it's just not as easy for DC to do ao as marvel. That's not to say marvel is objectively bad, i do enjoy some of their characters, particularly deadpool, but i just don't like marvel as much as i do DC
Real history can be told through comics. Canadians are taught about one of our founding fathers through this comic en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louis_Riel_(comics) as a textbook.
Persepolis (Iranian Revolution), Maus (Holocaust), Shigeru Mizuki’s Hitler (literally Hitler), and Muhammad Ali (take a guess who it's about). Those are the ones I've read, at least.
Too much social justice warrior theme in Marvel comic books is hurting its sales. A little bit of SJW is fine. But too much forced down on us and taking over original characters seems a bit much.
Maddie Patty at that point the line between a comic frame and a slide becomes very blurry. i think the strength of a comic is to quickly tell a short story as an example with humor. a few comics here and there would be fine (you often see this in slides). but i wouldn't want the whole lesson to be one big story
School doesn't work, it's a fact. So teachers need to be more innovative and this one guy is doing a pretty fine job. My respects, sir!
The Metal Worm agreed, the school system is teaching us to be more like robots then be innovative and create something for ourselves

The comic Calvin and Hobbes is a work of art. I highly recommend it to everyone of all ages.

I struggled with reading, so my mom let me read Calvin and Hobbes. Now I read Shakespeare and Austen for FUN.

Except when they remove provocative pieces out of pressure from wannabe academics WITHOUT CREDIBILITY.
Hey, with my last girlfriend. She had a hard time reading but when I showed her comic books, she found out that she loved reading and started to read more traditional books after that.
Nicely done.
The idea that comics cause juvenile delinquency remind me of something else these days...
What boredom?
I have no (video games) idea what (video games) you're talking about (VIDEO GAMES)
donald laube when did i mention boredom? My point was that many republicans are always saying "video games not guns cause mass shooting and delinquency" which is similar to "comics cause delinquency"
Jazz... no wait, swing... no wait, rock and roll... no wait, heavy metal... no wait, rap...

One of the smartest dudes in comics right there

"the rate of information flow is firmly in the hands of the reader"... This is it!
Back in 1986, I did bring some comics to school. They were actually fairly popular with the other kids.
Very well spoken.
I love his book Dragon Hoops!
Thanks for uploading this, TED. Good stuff.
There's a set of computer science textbooks called Head First that agrees with this idea, combining visual and textual elements to get the idea of the lesson across.
This talk should be viral
Comics are also a much faster way of conveying information and easier to memorize than plain text.
I finally in love with manga wanted to write my owns but my dreams can't make it
Interesting. I will try to incorporate this into my lessons. Oh wait, I can't draw. Damn, close.
Simply a beautiful work of Art🙏🏿👏🏿
He does the Avatar comic book series which are brilliant!
Such an interesting approach!
Anyone remember NerdSync's videos about this when he talks about comic history....
Sanjeeth Mahendrakar...ya ya...I know..!!
D.H Parekh It was the episode where Scott compared Stan Lee's life and Peter Parker's life wasn't it? Correct me if I'm wrong....

I'm here because Gene Luen Yang is the current writer for the new Shang Chi comic series (check it out!) and I'm getting into his other works!
Brilliant!
Now seriously, who would win in a fight between Superman and the Hulk?

This is so fascinating!!! ❤❤
I'm currently developing a web comic
I have realized that comics or manga is also a way of learning a different language.
V for Vendetta, Watchmen, Boxers and saints (which gene lien yang wrote) and Maus belong. But like, Infinity War and Dc Rebirth dont.
No, no, they do. Reading is reading.
Who’s here from English 10 with mrs.beard

Comics like Jawbreakers Lost Souls

Not yet. Not until he makes it for the public.

Its deathcore not melodic deathmetal.

Marvel > D.C.
I personally believe that DC is better, perhaps however you could explain to me wgy you believe marvel is better?
D.C. (dark horse/VERTIGO) sandman, hellblazer, fables, Y: the last man, preacher, hellboy, Batman ect.. no contest!

Tulepeeker Clearly
Mikey No Bones Those characters are lame. Especially Batman.

Very true
Real history stories belong in the classroom, but they still not there, and talking about comics... Hope is lost...
Real history can be told through comics. Canadians are taught about one of our founding fathers through this comic en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louis_Riel_(comics) as a textbook.
Maus by Art Spiegelman. depicts the experiences of the Polish Jew and Holocaust survivor, told with cats and Mice. Don’t knock’em
Persepolis (Iranian Revolution), Maus (Holocaust), Shigeru Mizuki’s Hitler (literally Hitler), and Muhammad Ali (take a guess who it's about). Those are the ones I've read, at least.
Manga > Comics
True but comics are american and thats wht they they are teaching. Manga will never cover the same stuff that some comics do
Always! They are better
Manga ARE comics. That's like saying fromage is better than cheese.
Too much social justice warrior theme in Marvel comic books is hurting its sales. A little bit of SJW is fine. But too much forced down on us and taking over original characters seems a bit much.
People are scared of hidden sjw material nowadays like US people were scared of communism in the 50'
Too much social justice warrior theme in schools is hurting our society.

Yes.
No. I disagree
Okay, have a reply

Maddie Patty slides can do the same without the unnecessary baggage of having it in a story format
xybersurfer the comics don't always have to be in a story format, they can just be explaining a concept, just like a slide.
Maddie Patty at that point the line between a comic frame and a slide becomes very blurry. i think the strength of a comic is to quickly tell a short story as an example with humor. a few comics here and there would be fine (you often see this in slides). but i wouldn't want the whole lesson to be one big story
