Great video! One thing you should know, when using chalk paint you don't have to prime 😉 I work in the paint department of home depot and have used chalk paint many times 😊
I know that they say you don't need to prime with Chalk Paint, but depending on your surface and risk of possible bleed through or if the surface is glossy, I prime as an extra "safety" measure to avoid possible problems later on. Water based products can pull the tannins from the wood and cause possible bleed throughs (even at the top coat stage). Chalk paints don't prevent bleed through so that is why I do prime some times when painting over a darker wood or if I'll be doing blending using water it keeps the paint from pulling back to show possible wood areas. I do agree, in "most" situations, you don't have to prime. Since I sell furniture and do custom work for clients, it has saved me from having to do touch ups later on. I hope you had a GREAT weekend. Looks great! You can make your own chalk-type paint very easily, though, and you can get the color you want and much, much cheaper! When I first started painting furniture I bought all the pricey paints and then started making my own and it saved so much on my return investment. It works just as well, too. I also bought the brushes but I find myself picking up my trusty Purdy brush more often.
Do you have a chalk paint recipe you use?
Jenna Boyle Three tablespoons calcium carbonate to one tablespoon warm water. Mix well then add one cup of paint.
Do you think I could achieve this blending technique with latex paint on furniture?
The problem is that chalk paints can be reactivated when misted with water while you are working with it which makes it easy to blend with (until they completely dry and then they don't reactivate) . You could get the look using latex but the blending process wouldn't be this easy.
, you will need to work quickly to blend it and then use a fine grit sand paper after it dries to smooth it out ( using the water with the chalk paint smooths out the finish better).
@@AjsVintageDesigns thank you so much! I have had difficulty in the past when I tried doing an ombre effect with monochromatic blue shades in latex paint. I thought I was doing something wrong, but like you mentioned I didn't have time to blend before the paint would start to dry. Do you have a preference in chalk paint brands? I'm going to pick some up at home depot or Walmart more than likely. Just wondering if a particular brand works better when blending. Thanks for your video! You really went into detail and showed exactly how you created the blended finish. I needed this!!!😁
